Watched the Bentley video last night with my son, who's in third-grade. This morning he wanted to surprise me by detailing my BMW - with a mop! It's the thought that counts.

I used to own a GTC for 12 years and 860.000km. Yes, you read that right. It did not look anywhere near as bad as this from the vid. I cannot believe how people mistreat their cars.

What year and any vacuum leaks? Plastic vacuum lines should never be used. Plastic dried and ultimately cracks due to thermal cycling. Mine's an '06 Flying Spur, bought with only 38,500 miles a few months ago. I guess I have quite a few miles to catch up with you! Very pleased to hear your story.

    • @loonytoon8836

@@Greg-kp5gd it was an 06 as well. One of the first off the line. I flipped my GT for it. In 07 I added a Flying Spur as family daily, since the second kid was just due. With kid no 3 we decided to come down to earth again and got rid of both, bought two Sharans instead, did some cool upgrades and are happy ever since. Less jealous people at the school parking comes along too.

@@loonytoon8836 Took an elderly neighbor to a monthly 'girl's luncheon on her 81st Birthday with my wife. Took her in style. Car was great. One of the party really was curious about the car and I drove her around the restaurant. We we on the beach in Myrtle Beach, glorious day. Yeah, a lot of attention from the people there. It was a good deed for a woman discussing relocating nearer to her son in Virginia Beach. Rained pretty good on way home. All in all a good day for her. Wife an I are that kinda of people. Mine appears to run the fan at a very slow speed, car off. We have new batteries but the ventilation module may be messed up to permit the fan to operate at all with engine off. Any knowledge of this would be appreciated.

I also have a Bentley Flying Spur, but compensate by owing a 2019 Mini Cooper S JCW. Also talked my older sister and her husband into a 2019 'regular' Mini. Mini's are gaining a rep for reliability. Got the '19 because it didn't have the computer sceer speedo cluster. Regular analog. Nor the annoying nanny warnings while driving. Lane assist, speed warning, etc.

Yep...there's nothing "cheap" about fixing a Bentley in any guise. That's why I'm not entirely sure I think it's a good "raffle" car. There used to be an old adage in the car community "You might be able to buy a Ferrari, but can you afford to drive a Ferrari?" - this was in reference to people buying old cheap Ferraris for $15-30K...but then realize that working on them was going double or triple the money they spent buying them.

I would like to wash my mom’s car for her birthday. It’s a daily driver 2012 in the high desert of AZ (not Phoenix but lots of sun anyway). Has never been detailed but basic wash. Last year I redid her headlights & she felt so much safer. This year I want the rest to be clean. I’d like to keep the budget to $50 for chemicals but don’t want to skimp either, especially on the protection. I have basic power tools & cloths. I figure I’ll power wash at car wash, then come back home to do real cleaning. Have water so no need for waterless.
I’ve been watching Larry for years & learned a lot so I’d like to give him some of my business. I’ll be buying a clay bar, microfiber towels, polishing pad for a drill. What items would you recommend I could get cheap for an annual clean & which to splurge with Larry? Thank you for the advice!

When these first came out, Volkswagen was selling their Phaeton - a four door luxury sedan built on the same chassis (same factory, etc.). Basically a budget Bentley. We sold only a handful of the nicer W12 models (an incredible motor), and many of the V8 models which were as little as...$63K or so if my memory is correct. Pretty wild attention to detail in those cars. This was circa 2004 or so.
The Phaeton had to be sold by a qualified "specialist" who attended classes on all the selling points, etc. Really cool car...but silly for VW as a brand at the time. Even though they'd launched the Touareg (which topped out around $58K I believe for the 5.0 V10 TDI we had shortly), no one was shopping VW for luxury cars. The Phaeton was probably the buy of the century if you wanted a big luxury cruiser..but again, no one is going to shop VW for that kind of car.
