Their non music issues aside, Don and Phil were one of the great rock and roll duo’s of all time! God Bless and God Keep 🙏

I love the Everly Brothers....2 heads, 1 voice!... Didn't know about this breakup, that they were Marines, or involved with drugs. Yes, glad they got back together in the end. Not all feuding siblings ever do.

Stop perpetuating this nonsense!! Yes, the Everlys did break up on stage but Phil did NOT smash his guitar over Don’s head. Phil put his guitar back in its stand with a bit of a thump but it hardly sustained any damage at all. And then Phil walked off stage. The promoter of the show pulled the plug after they had done four songs because Don was singing flat and also forgetting lyrics. Don had had Tequila and champagne on an empty stomach so he had something to eat and straightened himself out. Long story short, Don told the promoter he could do the remaining two shows on his own (Phil left the venue and had driven home) and Don had to “audition” for him to prove he was capable of performing. Don and the band cobbled together a setlist and Don did the 8:30 PM and 10:30PM shows on his own. The promoter even had the marquee changed to reflect that it was “The Don Everly Show” and not the Everly Brothers.

At last someone writing about the barely damaged guitar of Phil's. Stop this nonsense that it was badly damaged. Don had been drinking before he got to the venue and then continued to drink at the venue. The 'Walk Right Back' musical about the Everly Brothers doesn't help when Phil's guitar is 'smashed' on stage, it is for affect but it just did not happen.

@@chrisrushforth710 The guitar wasn't damaged at all. I was standing behind them onstage playing guitar when it happened. Yes, Donald was drunk that night and singing erratically. Phil threw the guitar straight down on the end pin, the end block broke, the side let go and it came apart. I picked up the pieces and brought it back to the dressing room and Phil told me to keep it. I gave it to luthier Bob Steinegger who rebuilt it and refinished it in black. I took it over to Phil's house, he played it, and It played so well that he decided to keep it.
The band proceeded to finish that with 'The Don Everly Show' after Phil walked out.
The band on that gig consisted of Ron Coleman on bass, Marshall (Gino) Gunnels on drums and myself on guitar.
Anything else you hear about that night is pure rubbish. I was there.

Thanks Sam, I had contacted Robert Steinegger about Phil's guitar and he said just as you have. I was tired of the silly stories. I am administrator of a Phil Everly group, I would very much like you to join, it's called 'Forever Phil' if you would like to come and join us. We have Jason Everly his wife, several cousins and band members, including Joey Paige and Dave Pearlman, and some of Phils oldest friends - Bill Harlan.

@@sammccue500 Thanks for telling the real story, Sam. I’m so tired of people perpetuating the “smashed guitar” theory. And it’s repeated so often, people just believe it’s true.

Longfellow was torn down last year. My friend jumped a fence and grabbed some bricks. That same friend has a bunch of acetates from the Cajun couple who wrote a lot of the Boys songs.

The Everly Brothers influenced several artists. One group was the Beatles. Somebody actually gave the Everlys a copy of the Please Please LP, suggesting possibe covers. While they liked the album, they chose not to cover any of the songs. That probably helped the Beatles. Another group was Simon and Garfunkel. They even toured together years later. Paul Simon wrote an article noting their influence and also both groups feuding.
Their first hits were on Archie Bleyer's label Cadence. Years later another former Cadence artist, Andy Williams, bought the catalog. He actually only wanted his own recordings. But Bleyer wouldn't split up the catalog. This led to some Everly Brothers recordings reissued on Williams' Barnaby label. It was named after his dog.
I saw the video of that reunion concert. Those recordings have been reissued many times. Barry Manilow had John Denver on one of his ABC specials. They did a medley of Everly Brothers hits. It should still be on UA-cam.
Other artists have recorded their songs. Anne Murray did Walk Right Back. She also performed it on The Muppet Show. Linda Ronstadt did When Will I Be Loved. Ditto for John Fogerty. Reba did Cathy's Clown, my personal favorite Everly song. You should also do a video on one of their influences, the Louvin Brothers. Ira and Charlie had quite a colorful career too. Charlie's posthumously published autobiography dealt with their conflicts too. You're very right about the bad influences of drugs and alcohol.

Not 100% true bro, GnR lived the life, and even Axl had to chastise each member for "dancing with Mr. Brownstone" and threatening to shut down the band. And they played sloppy. But they did it night in and night out for years.
