If you’ve watched our previous episode on the difference between 6, 8, and 10-lug snare drums then this will make perfect sense. The effect that this trick has on bass drums is pretty incredible and quite simple.

    I built a six tension rod snare once and I thought it was just my perception that that thing tuned much lower. Never realized that that is actually plausible

    I've known about this regarding snare drums forever: An Acrolite will sound better and beefier when tuned low than a Supraphonic does at low tuning, and the Supra will not shoke at higher tunings, but the Acro will at a certain point. It's just how things work. But I never thought to translate it into the bass drum, which works the very same way. I'm stupid, you are smart. Let's remove some lugs!

    Main issue with that technique is now you need more gain on your mics to capture a bass drum that has less volume, unless you hit it louder. That could have the potential of increasing bleed. Lower frequencies need more power to be loud, which is why bass amps need thousands of watts to project and be audible. One alternative to that would be triggering a sub sine wave the same "pitch" of the bass drum when you play it.

    You just solved my problem --- I am missing 4 "odd" T-rods on a 22" Yamaha BD (from a kit I am selling)... I initially left 3 on the front side, and all 8 of them on the batter side... so it sounded "papery"... So ~ I just now took 2 off the batter side - added 1 to the front (so 6 on batter, 4 on front), and it sounds great!... Until I can replace the 4 that are missing - this is a good fix - and I have 1 extra now!! Can't believe I didn't think of this!!! Thanks!

    I LOVE ❤️ messing around with different tunings on all my drums (just my 5 piece) and when it’s time to change heads, I get completely new types of heads every time just to experiment. I have not yet done this, I have lessened certain lugs, but never taken any out completely so I may try it.
    I just got the new Evans UV2s for everything except my bass, with a 300 snare side and EC resos for the toms (10, 12, 16). They should be here tomorrow, so I’m super stoked, so idk if I’ll try this trick out RiGht away with them, probably not, just tune em to the shell first with some extra bend and go from there. So glad they finally got in stock lol
    I’m not sure if you ever made a video about this, but if you have not, have you considered making a video about tuning your heads to the natural pitch of the drum? Like DW puts a sticker with the pitch of just the wood shell inside the shell, so you can tune it to the wood. Idk how many manufacturers do that or to how many models, but it could be an interesting video.

    The best way for more bottom end in a kick drum is.....1. No Port 2. No dampening...3. Do not bury the beater into the head,instead,bounce it. Let the drum ring! Its a drum!!
    Its happened to me many times...Playing around on my tubs..It occurs to me the kick is sounding a bit thin so I'll find the loose lug, and tighten it back up and the drum sounds full and huge again.Mind you, it is a bass drum that sounds like a drum,with gobs of subsonic bass and a solid 2 second decay..Unlike slapping the side of a box of books, which sooooo many drummers kick drums totally resemble...Its hard to sort through all this advice when it all contradicts each other...

  • @sleepwhenimdead9667
    @sleepwhenimdead9667 4 роки тому

    Interesting concept. In my experience crazy tone comes from head choice and using one's ears. Lots of current drum sounds I'm hearing are dry and punchy- muffled like crazy or using extremely dry heads. It works for some things, but not everything. I was a SuperKick II person for a decade. Then I finally got a batter head without an inch of foam around it and it changed my entire approach to tone. It takes a little experimenting to find what you like, but it's so worth it. And it can be as low and fat as you want it with a few tweaks here and there.

  • @mouldeck
    @mouldeck 4 роки тому

    That's really interesting!!
    I have a 60s ludwig classic maple kit so the BD hoops are rather thin, I think not having both tension rods around the pedal might be a problem. Considering these 2 rods as number 1 and 2, going clockwise, do you think removing rods number 3, 5, 8, and 10 might work, or it would unbalance the tension of the head too much?

    I've been meaning to let you guys know of a new tuning trick some guys at Nelson Drum Shop shared with me. Apparently it's a trick Keltner used in the studio. So the idea is to have the lugs on the sides tight, with the top/bottom ones loose (if you're looking at the drum from above). So if you have an 8-lug drum, you would tighten the 2 lugs on the left, 2 lugs on the right. Then back out the lugs on the top and bottom of the drum. It's supposed to let you get a dry and dead sound but with higher pitches. I kinda messed around with it but you really have to do some extremes and I was worried about my heads, lol. Would be neat to see you guys experiment with it

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  4 роки тому +2

      Hey! That’s quite similar to the approach that Masshoff made popular (Keltner and many others were certainly doing it long before, of course). Definitely some interesting options in there. Cheers!

  • @scottvelardo700
    @scottvelardo700 4 роки тому

    Sounds to me like taking the rods out gives a shorter sustain. The decay is a bit too quick for my taste, so maybe it’d be interesting to try loosening half of the lugs rather than taking them out. Maybe get something in between? I think I’ll try that. That Pearl maple drum a great sounding drum to begin with; most everything you do with sounds good.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  4 роки тому

      Not sure I understand- are you talking about applying additional pressure to the shell while playing and from what angle? Generally, additional pressure on the shell (especially off-axis) is going to end up restricting the motion of the shell (and as the result, the resonance).

    Been doing this on toms...taking two out across from each other to get a lower fundamental...also I feel the volume drops. Using tape in both spots as well...I'm doing this with larger concert toms and playing in a very small room no mics ! I 'm able to play at a whisper and also get a big boom when needed. I have always detuned the bottom two lugs at my kick pedal to get the pedal to feel like I want....no issues really cause the kick has some 1 inch foam slightly touching both sides and a 3/8" 4" wide wool rug pad parallel with the floor about mid beater height. I also throw a 4 " pvc coupling on its end to break up inner sound waves towards the reso about 8 " back from the front head. Reso is ported 6"@ 5 o'clock....24" Ludwig kick deep shell...this is my club kit indoors. My rock kit is all concert toms including my 24" Ludwig bass drums single head tuned high with smaller thin pillows and small pieces of monster tape on the beater side to taste. Wood beaters for a solid loud thump on ebony white dots.I Choose this for my rock kit cause my two kicks give off a very dissimilar sound and I like to bury the beaters when playing rock.

      Having fewer lugs isn't necessarily better or worse. I feel like a lot of that is marketing. I guess theoretically it is easier to get an even tuning with more lugs, but I've never had much more trouble with fewer lugs. One of my buddies has a 16" floor tom with 5 lugs on it. Definitely the lowest pitch I've ever heard from a 16" floor tom. I guess it all depends on the sound you're after!

      Never thought about the marketing angle and you're probably right. Drum companies have to rely on that for their businesses to keep progressing. This is just my opinion, but kind of like wood types for example. For a while Maple is the thing to have them Birch and so on. But yes I would definitely like to hear a quality drum with minimal lugs on it.

      You’re misguided on lug count for sure. There are some very good drums out there with 6 lugs. Check out the Ludwig pioneer for example.
      Basically, more lugs give you a broader tuning range, and less lugs, in my opinion at least, generates more warmth and tone from the drum. I personally prefer 8 lug snares because you get the best of both worlds.

    Drum with only half tension rods doesn't sound very resonant.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  4 роки тому +1

      Certainly not as resonant as with all of the tension rods but that first sound may also clash quite a bit with a band. The point here is to be able to dramatically alter the sound of a bass drum quickly and/or reach a lower possible tension while still making the drum playable in a practical manner. Maximum resonance isn't always the best thing. This trick drops the pitch while keeping the remaining tension rods intact (without issue of them shaking loose). -Ben

  • @royschwaben9646
    @royschwaben9646 4 роки тому

    That half-rod low tuning sounds bad and nasty in all the right ways. It's an angry tiger.
    I feel the synthy processed sentiment and usually I hate "fake" trashy sounds, but it still sounds organic and kinda drum-like even being so mean and gnarly.
    Good live? Probably not. Maybe mic'd.
    Versatile? Nah.
    Better than regular drums? Not a chance in hell.
    But it's super cool for what it is, and a middle ground (maybe just remove a couple rods) could potentially be bliss. This calls for some more experimenting.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum

      Ha! Light breeze? Try thunderous roar. Porting a bass drum head allows air to leave quickly and reduces the low-end tuning range. This ends up being a bit louder and fuller. You could always mount a dynamic mic inside for live/studio situations and then use an external mic for more of the low-end tone but we didn't have any issues capturing this sound with our traditional external setup.

      @@SoundsLikeADrum I mean the attack is basically non existent. Sounds like a pillow regardless of pitch. That's what I mean. I'm sure the pitch is low but yeah... No cut. No attack. Low pitch doesn't always have to mean long sustain although I do know porting can hurt the low end pretty bad if the hole is too big or placed poorly. If you only made a 4" hole (maybe even 3"? Lol hey might work?) and kept it close to the edge the effect would be minimal. In any case, unless it's some 60s or 70s music or some indie rock, porting the kick just seems like a necessity IMO for most modern applications.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  4 роки тому +4

      Interesting- I hear A LOT more attack in the second example (after having removed the tension rods). I just went back to the session file to listen to the raw audio and they're quite a bit more attack. That said, we were using a felt beater on a (tonally dark) coated head. Switching to clear and a plastic beater will bring about quite a bit more attack. Miking from the batter side (or internally) will also do that.

    Hello brother drummer. I am a jazz player. I do not purchase anything you advertise or tune like you because I am still looking for natural sound. Every thing you do is amplified. What is the natural sound of drum???? Dump the mic ,s because WE do not have any. If I order a product you review I want to know what it will sound like with out electronics. Guys say oh that head sounds great. Yes they do with a mic. Not good! Lets get natural . Your vids are great. Why would you waste time removing base drum lugs ?????? There are kids watching that go out and by gear because it sounded so good through your sound system. THIS is very miss leading. They get home and play the new toy or drum head and write a review that says how come his stuff sounds so good. well now you know somewhere that it sucked. Get the mic out from the base drum. What does it rely sound like.?? WE learn a lot but we can;t get your results at our practice rooms. Please try un amplifying everything thing and then I will know how not great something sounds when I try it. So there is your show. Be different. Nothing personal. MIC,s amps mixing boards will cost you young players min $1000.00 +++++++++ that is for CHEEP. stuff Leave the lugs on your drums. Do not take drums apart. You have a good show with out doing stuff like that. Just drum talk and drum opinion. Your audience is young drummers that need inspiration. Nine out of ten of them RUN to the basement and try this stuff with no electronic results. Also as I speak they are down stairs tearing perfectly good drum sets apart. Lugs all over the floor. In fact you take everything apart. Just go traditional to a point. Sub title for the new show. ELECTRONICS USED. You results will not be the same as on the show. RRLL P/S Love your room and the vertical Cymbal + light bulb. I will still watch your shows.

      Friend, the whole point of the channel is that they are trying to get as close as a naked ear as possible (no eq, no compression) amd they usually have a mic placed just out of shot that is ear height to replicate what you would hear. Cody is always careful to communicate what he is hearing behind the kit and whenever they are using audio mixing.
      Most of his videos are on trying new ideas to achieve a good sound, but some (like this one) is a bit more experimental.
      You should go watch their first video where they go over how they use mics to replicate the naked ear, juat so you dont have to take my word for it.

      Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and comment. As Matthew Molloy mentioned below, we work quite hard to make sure that our recordings are as sonically transparent as possible (we outline this here: ua-cam.com/video/xZk6dZ-V0RY/v-deo.html). One of the key elements of this entire channel is the fact that our recordings are not post processed (unless explicitly stated) and are produced to capture the sound that we're hearing in the room. Microphones are necessary in order to capture this sound- there's no getting around that. That said, there isn't a microphone in the bass drum- both mics are just outside the drum and being blended to capture what we're hearing for tone and attack.
      As far as the content of this particular episode goes- we enjoy diving into practical (and sometimes not-so-practical) tips/tricks/hacks and discussing their application. As you heard in the video, this was inspired by Jim Black so we didn't just pull this out of thin air. We appreciate your opinion but we've also come to know our audience quite well over the course of the last 98 episodes and nearly two years. We absolutely LOVE it when people are inspired to care more about their sound and experiment after having watched one of our videos and it's not just younger drummers (in fact- we've got a large population of players that have been drumming for decades). We make it quite clear that everyone's results will vary because everyone's drums/rooms/playing/etc. varies. That's why we encourage experimenting with this stuff on your own.
      Cheers! -Ben
