    Just to point out to the "That's not metal!" posters, back in the late 70s early 80s any band that consistently played loud distorted guitar and had a vocalist that screamed pretty regularly was considered heavy metal by the music press (and fans too, I guess). The crowd at an early 80s Kiss show was indistinguishable from the crowd at an early 80s Iron Maiden show.

      Yes, I remember when I first started getting into rock in the 1980s, the likes of Guns n Roses, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Whitesnake and even Bon Jovi were all described as “heavy metal”.
      The splintering of rock/metal genres and emergence of ‘classic rock’ happened later, labels have changed over time.

    • @TexasFriedCriminal
      @TexasFriedCriminal 3 роки тому +3

      True. But this is 2021 and looking back, we can see that Kiss and Guns 'n Roses sound very different from Ozzy or Priest and we can trance what is currently understood as metal back to the latter and not to the former.

    That's a great list. I like your broad sweep of what falls into the 'Metal' genre. I started listening to Heavy Rock and Metal in 1978 or so and was of an age to really enjoy and be influenced by NWOBHM. It was just 'Heavy Rock Music' to me. So that's really what my list is and it would probaly offend Metal purists but these albums certainly contributed towards the many aspects of Metal that we know today.
    For me I would go with the following in no particular order: Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind, Deep Purple - In Rock, Motorhead - Ace Of Spades, Ozzy - Diary of a Madman, Van Halen 1, Rainbow - Rising, DIo - Holy Diver, Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance, Black Sabbath - Paranoid and Metallica - Ride The Lightning

    Can't bring it down to just 10. I was born in '56 (same year as rock n' roll, baby!..;-)) and grew up with music from the fifties, sixties and seventies and beyond. Witnessed all of the bands in their heydays developing and becoming the greats they were. Alas, after about '75/6 it slowly dribbled away and limped into the 80s. Let's forget about the 80's as a favor to me, please...;-) I agreed with Ken Hensley when he said, "the heavy thing gets, well, heavy and you need something else." Another great review, dude. Rock on...;-)

    Hi, just discovered your channel, thank you for posting this my friend. It was very enjoyable, we both agree that the best Maiden album is 'Piece of Mind' & Sabbaths' 'Master of Reality' was their pinnacle. However if AC/DC are considered "Metal" then I'm going for 'Highway to Hell' and would remove Kiss and replace them with either Queensryche - 'Operation Mindcrime' or Faith No More - 'Angel Dust' Would also choose 'Ride the Lightning' over the Black album. Thanks again.

    Great choices! I’m with you, I like a little melody in my metal. Here are ten of my favorite metal albums you didn’t list, in no particular order (and limiting myself to one per band):
    Ride the Lightning (Metallica)
    Countdown to Extinction (Megadeth)
    Symbol of Salvation (Armored Saint) (if I could only recommend one album from this list, this would be it - any metal fan who hasn’t heard this gem should definitely give it a few spins)
    Blackout (Scorpions)
    Mandylion (The Gathering) (not my favorite of their albums, but easily my favorite from their metal era)
    Holy Diver (Dio)
    Lightning to the Nations (Diamond Head)
    No More Tears (Ozzy Osbourne)
    The Unforgiving (Within Temptation)
    Number of the Beast (Iron Maiden) (though I freely admit I need to listen to more Maiden)

    I would've put Queensrÿche's Operation: Mindcrime high on the list. I also would've included a Rammstein album, maybe Sehnsucht. And for something somewhat obscure, Cynic's first album, Focus, is incredible prog metal. Those would probably be my top three, in no particular order. Unless the This Is Spinal Tap soundtrack is allowed, heh.
    IMHO everything Metallica put out after ...And Justice For All sucked. Creatures of the Night is an odd pick too - I would've gone with Destroyer or Dressed to Kill.

      That's the first Metallica album where I hit next track four bars into a song and that song was Nothing Else Matters. That is the whinest song I've ever heard from a thrash metal band and started to sour my taste for Metallica. Then the Ride the Lightning melody they did live and just teased the songs from that album, and the straw that broke me was them suing their fans because someone within their inner circle dropped a song on Napster.
      Napster didn't get that, someone from their label or someone working with them in the booth put that song out there and Lar$ went all super-douche about it. I've been following the band since they were asking people to bootleg their stuff so more people heard it. And the first time I saw them they were really drunk while opening for Ozzy in 1986, Master of Puppets. I thought they sucked ass. Last time I saw them I also felt they sucked ass. While the only show I've seen them do that I left happy was their tour for ...And Justice.

      He just seems like someone who is deeper into Classic hard rock/Heavy metal than the more extreme subgenres of metal like Thrash Metal. Nothing wrong with that. The Black album is a good album, it's just not a thrash metal album. I personally would have preferred Metallica had stayed a little more metal in the 90s, but at the same time I'm glad they moved away from Thrash. Thrash is such a limiting genre of metal. I used to love thrash but it gets so boring quick.

    I am not one to listen to music by categories and I never cared much about the "Heavy Metal" etc as genre BUT there are surely many bands that I love that fall into this direction more or less. I am a child of the time where this music was "invented" without the name still (although Born to be Wild had already dropped the phrase). Anyway:
    1. Deep Purple - Machine Head
    2. Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
    3. Alice Cooper - Killer
    4. Motorhead - Ace of Spades
    5. Rainbow - Rising
    6. Clash - Give 'em Enough Rope (Most people put Clash into the "punk" bin, but the band has always been much more and on this album Sandy Pearlman made them sound like a classic Hard/Heavy rock band with great songs)
    7. Guns 'n' Roses - Appetite for Destruction
    8. Mountain - Climbing
    9. Iggy & the Stooges - Raw Power
    10. Uriah Heep - Very 'eavy Very 'umble

    Another entertaining video. Keep on keeping on! It's really hard to pick favorites among your most beloved children, but I threw together a list just for the hell of it (pun intended!). One can always debate where Heavy Metal begins and ends, but since you did it, I've included some proto-metal bands, but left out any Trash or Death metal bands as these are distinctly more aggressive and modern as far as I'm concerned, hence no Metallica, Megadeth, Opeth etc.
    1) Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell (To me the perfect bridge between the 70s and 80s Metal by the most influential band of the genera),
    2) Black Sabbath - Vol. 4 (To me this is the peak of their 70s catalog, and unlike their first three albums, this is one I keep playing and haven't tired of. Songwriting is killer, and the doomy sound is perfected. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is a very close second, but not as HEAVY in my mind);
    3) Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz (This band were also a phenomenal force and influenced the direction of metal in the 1980s alongside the NWOBHM bands. Most of all Randy Rhoads paved the way for stronger classical influences and professional musicianship in metal);
    4) Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (I could have picked any of Iron Maiden's albums between 1982-88, but this is my favorite, probably because it's their most progressive effort, while still maintaining their trademark full throttle bass and drums, criminally catchy choruses and dual guitar solos),
    5) Dio - Dream Evil (The greatest voice in Heavy Metal were never as good solo as he were in Rainbow and his first stint with Sabbath. Nevertheless, Dream Evil is in my opinion his best album, and nothing is more 80s metal to me than Dio);
    6) Judas Priest - Stained Class (It's my favorite Judas Priest album. Maybe not full blooded metal, but I think they were at their best during the late 70s. Their songwriting was stellar, Halford's voice supreme, and the "dry" clean sound is to die for),
    7) Dream Theater - Awake (When heavy metal as we knew it faded from the headlines in the 90s, Dream Theater were on of the few bands with strong 80s metal influences to gain success with their uncool high pitched vocals and over the top guitar shredding. Awake is their magnum opus in my opinion, striking the perfect balance between 1980s melodic metal and progressive rock as we knew it from the most virtuous bands of the 70s, ELP, Yes and Rush especially),
    8) W.A.S.P. - The Crimson Idol (Blackie Lawless did shock rock like only Americans could do it. Glamourous, yet horrifying like a John Carpenter movie. When the autobiographical Crimson Idol was released heavy metal was in decline and the grunge era sadly on the rise. That might be the reason why WASP and this album never achieved iconic status, but to me it is on of the best metal albums, and concept albums, ever made);
    9) Budgie - Never Turn Your Back on a Friend (Almost unknown outside of nerdy metal circles, Budgie was one of the earliest metal bands, playing fast paced proto-metal somewhere in the landscape between Sabbath and Purple. This album from 1973 is by far their best and has kept a place in my Top 10 for a long time).
    10) Symphony X - The Odyssey (Might also be too progressive to fit, but in my opinion, SX is the peak of traditional heavy metal. Their neo-classical metal, drawing heavily on the style of Ritchie Blackmore, Randy Rhoads and Yngwie Malmsteen, is a potpourri of everything that came before. Catchy songwriting, progressive influences, masculine vocals with growling lows and screaming highs, blistering fast guitar and keyboard solos, and an intense rhythm and bass section).

How that changed how we even see what is metal. I remember thinking Ozzy and AC DC were definitely heavy metal back in the day.

If some want to call some of their stuff heavy metal or hard rock oh wll. It is still great music. I guess good definitions of genre really help when people are discussing the music and the influences and what it influenced. Personally I would say VH and Rush are in differently subgenres of hard rock while Ozzy and AC DC should be in some subgenre of heavy metal. But if you want to call AC DC hard rock then that is fine. I really have to highlight the point you made on loving melody in your metal. Absuloutely no way a contradiction in terms.
    People forever asked me why, with all the rock/metal/thrash that I banged the drum for, why I wasn't nearly so taken with Prodigy and punk in particular. I guess it comes down to that M word with me also at the end of the day. No more oxymoron than it is an Oxo cube.
    Can't agree more too with your reference to Maiden's use of literature and history to act as a storyboard. Not surly dirges on the greasy pole of teenage angst, but instead timeless themes that struck a chord with me through Seventh Son, in much the same as Rush's Necromancer and even Clanned's The Hooded Man did to my younger self.
    Overall, much to agree on as a bloke banging on the door of 50, and much to conscientiously mull over that hasn't graced my record player in quite literally decades. Good stuff!

    That is a great list. Piece Of Mind is my favorite metal album. Can't really argue with most of it. I love, love, love Creatures Of The Night but I really can't wrap my head around classifying that as classic heavy metal. Kinda the same for Appetite For Destruction. Iconic hard rock album. I have always likened them to a poor man's Aerosmith (early years). I might add some Ronnie James Dio on my list. Maybe Holy Diver, Heaven And Hell or Rainbow Rising.

    The lyrics for the first five Ozzy albums were written by bassplayer Bob Daisley.

    I almost disagree with your list but it’s your list not mine so I respect it :)

    On In Rock, I like Living Wreck. Hardly a world changing track but it just does something to me.
    It's one of those tracks that could be considered a filler but there are no fillers on that album.
    It's like everyone gets a gig on that track. It's a great example of a B side track excellence - the other B tracks not withstanding BTW.

    Great video. Thanks. My definition of "heavy metal" is somewhat narrow so I don't include DP, LZ, AC/DC, Van Halen, and a few others. Hard to shrink it to just 10.
    10. Shout at the Devil - Motley Crue
    9.Creatures of the Night - KISS
    8. Peace Sells But Who's Buying - Megadeth
    7. Diary of a Madman - Ozzy
    6. Heaven and Hell - Black Sabbath
    5. British Steel - Judas Priest
    4. Black Album - Metallica (agree 100%...it's commercial but it's my favorite Metallica album)
    3. Powerslave - Iron Maiden
    2. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
    1. Screaming for Vengeance - Judas Priest
