In order not to constantly chop, you need to have two strings of basic thread, then you would constantly only raise the loop on one side and add a new color.
So for each new color, you'd drop it when you got to the other side, pick up the same color from another skein and work back to the other end, and then you'd have working ends of each color on each side, just carried up? Trying to understand this because I want to do a blanket and I don't want to weave in 300 ends! LOL
I definitely want to see this done.
I wonder if this could work in the round 🤔 I think it might solve the issue of having to cut the yarn each row.

There are cabled tunisian hooks which take lots of stitches so you do not need to work in strips

I like using a foundation aingle crochet when I do tunisian crochet. I should do more Tunisian crochet patterns.
This is really pretty, but how do you deal with all of those tails and loose stitches? It seems like there would be 1000 failure points.
The ends can be woven back in a few inches then snipped off, or then could be encased in an edging stitch or border like a lot of mosaic stitch blankets are finished. You could also leave the ends longer and make tassels along the sides. But all that’s mostly cosmetic - those yarns are interlocked with each other, they aren’t pulling out of failing any time soon.
Also, if you did the stitch in the round, you wouldn’t have to keep clipping the white yarn. And if you replaced the individual colors with color changing yarn, you can eliminate all but four of the ends.
@@jlon1066 Is it really possible to stitch it in the round? It would certainly be impossible with this kind of long stiff hook, you could need one with a flexible wire because the hook could have to loop back on itself in a circle. Also at the transition between two rows you wouldn't get a smooth transition since it would basically just be like a flat work folded back on itself. With Tunisian stitch you always have to turn back at the beginning and end of every row, you can't go in a spiral like how you usually knit/crochet in the round. Therefore the transition would only be the single threads stepping over to the next row, not actual stitches. Might be too weak?
@@jlon1066 I had to look into it and apparently there are double headed crochet hooks! I've never seen them before! That solves the problem and makes it possible to do the Tunisian stitch in the round! This is a big revelation for me because I love making stuff with the Tunisian stitch. Usually I make checkered things because I don't like to have too many stitches on the hook at a time.
when you are ready to change the color, attach the new color with a magic knot. Make sure that it is snug up against the white. Then, do your return pass with the new color :)))

Tunisian crochet hooks comes with extra wire attached as knitting needles
Also if you only have a short needle you can make a "patchwork" of smaller sections. They attach directly when you crochet and don't need sewing afterwards.
This is really pretty. Even the smocking over a single colour would be really pretty.
What I don't like, though, is how each row, the under-chain (the coloured area, in this case) is not really connected to the one below it, so when the piece is stretched at all, there's some gaping. You could see it sort of happening at the beginning and end. When using a stitch like this for a clothing, or blanket, etc. . .wouldn't that cause some uncomfortable holes as it's stretched and pulled with movement? Is there a way to do this so the chains are more connected, with the overlaying smocked stitch?
As I was watching, I thought "hmm, this would work really well as a sweater motif with a woven fabric lining the wrongside." Although that might not be the go-to solution for everyone and not every crocheter also has a loom, I could still see working this in panels and sewing together with a lining fabric of choice being a cute construction for especially warm and cushy winter apparel.

You can crochet a border over the loose threads to hide them or tie them together in groups to make a fun fringe or tassel along the edge. You might have to pull the loose threads through to the outer edges on the right-hand side in order for them to lay in the right position.

It's because the end of the yarn attached to the ball is at the opposite end of the project when you finish the row on both directions. There's no way I can see to carry it with you as you work the background color part, so cutting it is really the only option.
