Color chaos is the perfect term! It's why I've crocheted only with solid color yarn, and occasionally two-color yarn, which isn't chaotic. Oh, one exception is a Christmas-y cotton yarn, white with specks of red and green, with which I made potholders to give as gifts, and they turned out nicely, no chaos there, either. 😃
I accidentally made a pooled scarf back in the 60s. I had no idea how it happened until decades later. Thank you for this tutorial. I'm ready to pool again!
😊Same, well almost. I once made a pooled slipper (by accident, I very soon learned). I love how you start off with a yarn that includes the green painted on your nails and also found on your t-shirt. Hahaha! I think I know one of your favourite colours.
I used that red heart yarn with the rainbow colors to make a beanie once. All the black ended up on the bottom, and the color at the very top. It made the hat look like paint dripping down it! It was so cool!

Wow! I hope that part of your day job is teaching because this is so clear and concise! It was also able to keep my attention which is NOT easy due to my adhd. I didn’t expect to watch this whole video, but I did, and I actually learned something! Excellent video.
Thank you! I was a teacher for 16 years so your words mean a lot to me. I’m so happy you enjoyed learning something new. That makes this teacher heart so happy. 😁💜
Your tutorial is a revelation, It’s Time For Yarn! I’ve got a few inherited afghans that I just realized were made with the color pooling method!!! I knew my Great Grans, Grans & Aunties we’re skilled yarn crafters but I’m so impressed by how they would have passed this knowledge amongst themselves 🥰 It also explains why I could never find their buried yarn tails on the color switches 🤯
Woohoooooo bravo, you just answered all my frustrated, impatient questions about why sometimes pooling works out perfectly and why sometimes not, and how to fix it!! Thank you! ❤🎉🎉
I just started crocheting a week or so ago, and so few of the tutorials I've watched actually go into theory. I appreciate this video more than I can even explain 🥺
Im obsessed. Im going to learn this technique for sure!! Ive been crocheting for about 4 months now to help with my anxiety and its been so much fun and therapeutic. This is so exciting!!!

wow, I wouldn't think it was possible to make such a neat pattern with a chaotic yarn like this one. This is the first time I heard about colour pooling, which shocked me. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I was amazed as well when I first saw it and knew I HAD to figure it out. I fell in love and here I am! You can do it too! Once you get the hang of it, color pooling is so addictive. 😁💜
I wish every person would explain stuff like you do. Your explanation but also the way you speak, emphasize etc. is just perfect imo. Thank you. I didn't even look for this, stumbled across it and watched the whole thing.
This feels like one of the more accessible techniques for crochet for me. I struggle with doing "special stitches" and the stitches you are using are my favorite ones. Working the gauge will be the struggle for me, but I feel like I can manage it easier than some of the other things I've seen people do.
Incredible, I suppose this technique can be used also in knitting in flat! Never thought that colorful yarn can show those beautiful pattern other than stripes. Thank you for sharing this❤
Your very welcome. Yes! I can be done in knit. I am not knowledgeable in how to do it but I’ve seen pictures in some of the color pooling Facebook groups I am in. 😁💜
You are a genius!! I've always avoided this kind of yarn because I've never understood how to make it look nice. This is mind blowing and eye opening. Thank you for the video!!!
You have the best voice and you are so easy to listen to! I feel like Your instruction was easy enough for beginners but not too slow for an advanced crocheter. Everything you said made sense and was so clearly shown and understandable. You didn’t go off on many tangents about stories we didn’t come to listen to, you got straight to the point and I even started to crochet as I was watching this. I never subscribed so fast in my life and I cannot thumbs up this video enough. I may have to start pooling now and I’m really excited about it ❤Thank you
You did a great job explaining the basics. I crochet to lessen stress. I'm guessing that I would be a mental wreck trying to do this. I do applaud you and any viewers who have the patience and persistence to do this. The afghans in your background are the most beautiful I've seen.
Wow! Thank you for your kind words. I’ll admit, getting a color pooling project started isn’t the most therapeutic but once you get going, it is surprisingly simple. Give it a try. I think you will love it! 😁💜
I'm fairly new to crochet, and this is my first time hearing of color pooling, but you did SUCH and incredible job teaching it in this video that I feel like I could totally do it!!! I feel like I just attended class in school 😆 You really answered every question I had in my head as I watched the video! Especially the "what if's"! Incredible video, thank you!!
Thank you so much! I’m so happy to help. Be sure to watch part two and part three where I go into more specifics with the two ways that I know to how to color pool. (There are more ways but I haven’t mastered them yet). Color pooling is so much fun once you get the hang of it. You can do it! 😁💜
Immediately went to dig through my stash to find the color changing yarns I bought for the pretty colors but got too frustrated to use!!! This is so cool and I can't wait to experiment. Great video!
@ItsTimeforYarn update: tried it out and i just bought more yarn at michaels to make a bag with this technique...dont tell my dad i bought more yarn!! 😂
I love that i stumbled on this video. I never thought those yarns were good, even if they had a pretty combination, because I didn't enjoy how they mixed up in other patterns. thank you so much for sharing the idea of color pooling, and you explained everything so beautifully
You’re very welcome. I felt the same way about how they looked in other patterns. Color pooling opened a whole new world for me and variegated yarns. 💜😁
Adding to the chorus: I was super intimidated coming into this and thought there would be no way I could do something like this, but was curious anyhow. There's still 10 minutes left in the video and I'm confident I can start playing with this and have some moderate success! Heck, I'm EXCITED to start playing with this idea. THANK YOU!!
Thank you, thank you!!! You are absolutely brilliant at explaining & showing Pooling. I've watch many videos on pooling but, you are the best. Thank you again!
I passed on this yarn when I saw it at Ollie's. Now after your excellent explanation I might buy it, if I see anymore. Looking forward to this series. Thank you!
I've come across color/planned pooling before but NOONE has explained it nearly as well as you have...THANK YOU...I have a few skeins of RHHS primary stripes that I was gifted and now I have something to play with in order to make a (hopefully) beautiful piece to gift to someone. Thank you again!
This series is amazing. I learned that colour pooling was a thing, and I got the general gist of it, but I never actually tried it. It all seemed far too complicated, to be honest! And I learned as a knitter, so it's awesome to see such an in-depth set of tutorials from a crochet perspective.
Thank you for your kind words. I wanted to help solve the mystery of color pooling for those like myself who find it magical and so cool! I hope you find some good yarn and give this thing a try. You will love it! 😁💜

Thank you so much! I was a teacher for 16 years so your words really mean a lot to me. I’m not sure if you have a hobby already but crocheting is very therapeutic and lots of fun. I hope you will give it a try! 😁💜
This is so interesting! I never thought different yarn color schemes could make such beautiful patterns like these ♥️ so here’s what I gathered from the vid… Most likely works on 2 types of stitches-moss stitch and granny stitch It’s better to find a yarn skein that doesn’t have too much of a noticeable ombré Find your magic number, eg. loosen your tension and/or tighten it to reveal the pattern
This is amazing. I love multi coloured yarns, because I can get varied colours without the hassle of changing skeins and weaving in all those ends, but I'm not crazy about the patchy stripes you end up with just working it as it comes.
You are such a great teacher that this concept finally clicked for me. I hadn't thought to stick to just moss and granny stitches and use the stitches themselves as the unit of measure. Instead, I tried to ram my way through a specific pattern and yarn (because adhd hyperfocus) and had to cut it so much that I may as well have just used differently colored yarns. It was a mess and the unfinished project will forever lie in the graveyard of shame. Thank you so much for sharing! I can't wait to try again!
So color pooling, never knew what it was called. Years ago I saw my aunt make a baby dress with this, so cute. Im glad for youtube i didnt want to ask her to teach me.
This is fantastic! A few years back I was all excited to try color pooling and dove ni and hit a wall and put it away where it has been in hibernation. This tutorial is exactly what I need and I can't wait to pick up the yarn and hooks and start over following your tutorial series. So clear and I love the examples, explanations, and clarification.

The funny part is I wonder if Caron even knows that their yarn can do this!! Haha I think you are brilliant and thank you for doing the legwork and the tutorial. It's probably above my skill level but I just like knowing that yarn can do this 💕
You are so welcome! My goal is that after my tutorial, you will feel equipped to succeed in this skill. I encourage you to watch my upcoming argyle video and give it a try. You can do it!

I just want to recommend hobbii print yarn - it really has sharp transitions and different lengths of pooling in different yarns. I used it for another project and it pooled somewhat, thought it would be possible to do something more with this, and happily found this video! It is amazing what is possible with just a printed yarn.
@@ItsTimeforYarn I just bought the ribbon yarn! Will make a big tote bag. And working with the print (colourway with pink, purple, green and blue pastels) and this yarn is the reason I realized perhaps colour pooling was a thing (I never knew about it but noticed the yarn was pooling and thinking it should be possible to control).
@@Zendemic42 I’m still debating on getting it. I may wait until later in the year since I just got yarn. But then again, I don’t want to miss the sale. Ugh decisions! 😭
this is amazing! I’ve always seen advanced crocheters throwing away these kind of yarn because of the color control, but this is absolutely mind blowing. obviously I have to try this for a skirt! thank you so so much from ecuador 🇪🇨
oh wow, this makes me feel so much better about my approach to the read heart granny all in one squares !!!!!! i was doing color-pooling! it's actually correct that i was adjusting stitch counts (the number of DCs in a cluster, the number of corner chains, etc). and that frogging is just like, a part of learning how your gauage and hook interact with the color changes. and the fact that once you've figured it out, *you've figured it out.* it's slow at the beginning as you figure out how to make the yarn's color changes work with you, but once you figure out the "trick," you can do it MUCH more quickly and consistently! and oh MAN, yeah, the concept of hiding color changes in the yarn underneath stitches on the next row -- yeah, i definitely had to brute-force a lot of this stuff myself because. i simply didn't realize that i was trying to learn a new technique. tl;dr i feel so much better about trying to do color-pooling with varigated yarn because i literally didn't realize i was already doing that with the red heart granny square yarn
Exactly! Once I learned to relax and manipulate the stitches how I needed to, I took off with color pooling. The Granny Square yarn is 100% color pooling. I talk about that in my video using it. I think that yarn is so neat!
i've been crocheting for about 5 years and color pooling has always been something i couldn't wrap my mind around, thanks for demystifying it! your examples are lovely and i may just give this a go some time ^.^

I just had UA-cam suggest this video to me out of the blue and I am so glad it did! I've always liked the idea of trying to get multicolored yarns to fall into certain patterns and such, but never had the mind to really figure out how to get it to work. This video was great about explaining.

I've watched a LOT of color pooling videos in the last 6 years, but after watching part 1 of 3, I am feeling confident that I'll be able to do this!! I got a hank and a half (I think that is the right terminology) of "shiny 100% cotton" I can't remember the name of the cotton, it's 100%, anyway, I got it at a thift store for 15 bucks. It's absolutely GORGEOUS variegated yarn!! It's 3 pounds, if I remember correctly. Anyway, I've been saving it for YEARS, we are in the middle of the second largest move of my life, so no time to do any of my hobbies, however, once we get moved and crochet weather is here, I'm going to measure my beautiful yarn and SEE, and I think it is, see if the colors are the same length. I think they are!!! Maybe I'll make myself a bag! Like a purse... Fun to dream! Thanks again! New sub here💜

Thank you for loving the comment…it was a very sweet way to deal with a comment that was obviously not meant for your video. ❤️
This is amazing! And inspiring. You make this technique seem possible - though when I saw your finished work I initially thought, "No way!" My solution to using variegated yarn (the Ice Picasso yarns, for instance) has been to outline them with a solid color to create a "stained glass window pane" effect, setting off little areas of the different colors. That works for some projects, but I don't like the polka-dot effect it gives in others. When I finish my current complex afghan, I'll see if I can do this. Thanks - and brava!
You’re very welcome. I’m excited for you to give this a try. Once you get the hang of it, it is truly addicting! You will never look at variegated yarn the same way again. 😁💜

I used that red heart yarn with the rainbow colors to make a beanie once. All the black ended up on the bottom, and the color at the very top. It made the hat look like paint dripping down it! It was so cool!
Wow! That sounds great! I wish I was better at beanies but I’m never satisfied with them when I make them. Keep up the great work! 😁💜
I've been sitting on red heart black rainbow yarn for YEARS.
Bless you for this video.
You’re very welcome! I have a checkered pattern video using Red Heart Primary stripes. I’m not sure if that’s what you have but you may want to check it out and see if you like that tutorial. Good luck! 😁💜
@@ItsTimeforYarn I have the one that's black, then neon rainbow. Im trying to learn new stitches for my Etsy. I've been crocheting for about 7 years, and getting my confidence back :)
@@simonamannone8651 awesome! I made a color pooling blanket with RH Neon Stripes following the same procedure that I share in my checkered pattern tutorial. It works up so nicely. I love black with neons!
I have been seeing alot of this 'color pooling' crochet on YT, BUT let me tell you what.......yours is absolutely the BEST!! This was so stunningly amazing to watch and listen to you explain how this works......girl; you are a genius here!! I have been a crocheter for over 50 years, and NEVER have i seen something so 'hypnotizing to watch'. I literally thought when i saw (that AMAZINGLY beautiful) afghan behind you, i thought you had changed the colors of yarn. But then when i saw the mathematics behind it all, SO stunned with how you got those perfect lines. New Subscriber here.....cannot wait for more.

Thank you so much!
I have been crocheting for 30 years and I felt the same way when I discovered color pooling. I was amazed and knew I had to master it. I’m glad you’re here! 😁💜
Mind Blown🤯. I’ve been crocheting for many years and I’ve never seen this technique or even thought it existed! This old dog has definitely learned a new trick. You are amazing young lady. Thank you!!✌🏻🤍
Thank you for your kind words. I was mind blown as well when I learned this technique. It is so cool!

I knew my Great Grans, Grans & Aunties we’re skilled yarn crafters but I’m so impressed by how they would have passed this knowledge amongst themselves 🥰
It also explains why I could never find their buried yarn tails on the color switches 🤯
That’s so cool! I can imagine the perplexing task of finding non-existing ends! 😂💜
Woohoooooo bravo, you just answered all my frustrated, impatient questions about why sometimes pooling works out perfectly and why sometimes not, and how to fix it!! Thank you! ❤🎉🎉
Happy to help! 💜😁
I just started crocheting a week or so ago, and so few of the tutorials I've watched actually go into theory. I appreciate this video more than I can even explain 🥺
You are so welcome!
Im obsessed. Im going to learn this technique for sure!! Ive been crocheting for about 4 months now to help with my anxiety and its been so much fun and therapeutic. This is so exciting!!!
Color pooling is tricky at first but SO SATISFYING once you get it going. 💜😁
This is so interesting! I love that argyle or buffalo check look and really want to learn this color pooling technique. So glad I found your channel!…😊

Welcome! You’re going to love color pooling. 😁💜
wow, I wouldn't think it was possible to make such a neat pattern with a chaotic yarn like this one.
Wow, thank you! I was a teacher for 16 years and loved it so your words mean a lot to me. 😁💜
This feels like one of the more accessible techniques for crochet for me. I struggle with doing "special stitches" and the stitches you are using are my favorite ones. Working the gauge will be the struggle for me, but I feel like I can manage it easier than some of the other things I've seen people do.
You can do it! 💜😁
Just wow my mind is blown!
Right?! I felt the same way when I learned this technique. 💜😁
You’re very welcome! My mind was blown as well when I first learned this technique. I love it! 😁💜
I may have to start pooling now and I’m really excited about it ❤Thank you
Wow! Thank you for your kind words. 😁💜
Oh gave opened up a whole new world of crochet and I have crocheted for 50 years!
I’m so happy to hear that! 😁💜
I'm so excited to try this! Ive seen it but never had a tutorial that i could follow successfully. THANK YOU!!
You’re going to love it!

I did the exact same thing when I discovered color pooling. You will love it! 😁💜
This honestly seems like magic! I'd never heard of colour pooling before, but now I feel like I've got to give it a go
I felt the same way. As soon as I discovered it, I knew I had to try it! You will love watching the pattern develop. 😁💜
My word, that's effective.

THANK YOU!!

I've come across color/planned pooling before but NOONE has explained it nearly as well as you have...THANK YOU...I have a few skeins of RHHS primary stripes that I was gifted and now I have something to play with in order to make a (hopefully) beautiful piece to gift to someone. Thank you again!
You’re very welcome! 😁💜

I never thought different yarn color schemes could make such beautiful patterns like these ♥️ so here’s what I gathered from the vid…
Most likely works on 2 types of stitches-moss stitch and granny stitch
It’s better to find a yarn skein that doesn’t have too much of a noticeable ombré
Find your magic number, eg. loosen your tension and/or tighten it to reveal the pattern
Yep! Color pooling takes some patience and some practice but is so much fun! 😁💜
This is amazing. I love multi coloured yarns, because I can get varied colours without the hassle of changing skeins and weaving in all those ends, but I'm not crazy about the patchy stripes you end up with just working it as it comes.
Me too! Discovering color pooling changed the game for me. 😁💜
You’re very welcome! You are going to be great. 😁💜
Thank you! You made pooling look so much easier. You have a great way of teaching. I'm glad I found your channel.
Thank you for your kind words. I’m glad you’re here! Color pooling is so addictive once you get the hang of it. You can do it!
I’m so happy to hear that you’ve been re-inspired to try again. It can be finicky at first but it is so cool once you get the hang of it. You can do it! 😁💜
You are a brilliant teacher! I'm able to understand and not be bored. Thank you!
You are a fantastic teacher!!! I love that you chose to do this tutorial in increments so that we could absorb the concepts first.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’m looking at their site now for ribbon yarn. I may have to throw a couple of prints in my cart too. 😁💜
@@ItsTimeforYarn haha feel you! I buy too much yarn like many of us

You are so welcome! I’m glad you’re here! 😁💜
oh wow, this makes me feel so much better about my approach to the read heart granny all in one squares !!!!!! i was doing color-pooling! it's actually correct that i was adjusting stitch counts (the number of DCs in a cluster, the number of corner chains, etc). and that frogging is just like, a part of learning how your gauage and hook interact with the color changes. and the fact that once you've figured it out, *you've figured it out.* it's slow at the beginning as you figure out how to make the yarn's color changes work with you, but once you figure out the "trick," you can do it MUCH more quickly and consistently! and oh MAN, yeah, the concept of hiding color changes in the yarn underneath stitches on the next row -- yeah, i definitely had to brute-force a lot of this stuff myself because. i simply didn't realize that i was trying to learn a new technique.
tl;dr i feel so much better about trying to do color-pooling with varigated yarn because i literally didn't realize i was already doing that with the red heart granny square yarn

I used to make my own color blends by weaving different colors of yarn together in long sections. I can customize my yarn because I know how to blend the yarn. I can also blend different weights and softness of yarns. It's important to practice. 😊
Sounds pretty neat. 😁💜
This is really cool! I lose my place when I try to crochet anything over 20 stitches wide, but I'm definitely going to show this to my mom. Thanks!

Ahhh!!!!
I'm self taught, via UA-cam.
I've made blankets, scarves, mittens, kitchen wash rags.

Thank you for loving the comment…it was a very sweet way to deal with a comment that was obviously not meant for your video. ❤️
Whoa! You take things to a new level for sure!! I'm just a basic beginner & this boggles my mind! Very interesting!
@@ItsTimeforYarn I believe you. I avoided working with variegated yarn until recently. Now I'm learning how to use it in ways that reduce the blotchy, scrambled effect it sometimes produces. It's challenging!
