Thanks for the review. Gamblin are good but I wouldn't pay a premium for them if you can get old holland, or mussini cheaper. They do try to make pigments less toxic. Its generally pretty stiff and good pigmentation but nothing special.

The Schmincke Norma is my standard go to paint - they say it’s artist grade, but to be fair it’s somewhere between student and artist grade, also price wise, but if you like to paint big and still want quality I really like it. Gamblin paints are nice too, but too expensive here in Europe, so there are other alternatives.

I use masterclass paints and they have great pigmentation. They don't lose their brightness like other brands. Lukas, Old Holland, Schminke Mussini, Rembrandt and Blocks are the master level paints.

The thing with brigtness is also about how the brand made their recepies, while Lukas 1862 for example have Beewax inside, they will be more mat than paints with resins like Mussini. There are lovers for both finishes. I personally dont care that much, since the varnish will bring all the luminance back in the end ;)

It is interesting for me to see how people have different experiences with paints. As for me, I don’t like Lukas 1862 at all. I have Lemon Yellow and Phtalo blue. Their Lemon Yellow is so dull, has no shine and it does not spread smoothly. It is sticky. Somewhere on UA-cam I read that Lukas paints are said to be quite matte in general. Rembrandt and Schmincke Norma are my favourite so far. Although I don’t like the strong smell of Rembrandt paints, they are as smooth as butter. Love that. Schmincke Norma paint doesn’t smell really, and is well pigmented. However, the paint has a thicker consistency, which is a downside. I haven’t tried Mussini yet.

    • @geraldcoleman8312
      @geraldcoleman8312 24 дні тому

Go with Winton. Master-Class is considered student grade paints even in Russia. Several individual studies lead to believe that Master-Class producer cut the costs even on the cheapest of pigments. They also tend to lie about their cadmiums and cobalts (it appears that they don't use them at all without telling that their oil colors are hue imitations). Most of the Russian artists would gladly use Winton over Master-Class even when the former costs twice more (except those artists that make 3-5 paintings a day and cannot afford to buy gallons of more expensive paint).

Cobalt pigment is about 70 dollars per kilogram for general paint use(greens and turqoise are cheaper and surprisingly violets 14 not more than blues. Except that cobalt violet in other composition is double or triple higher in price. Coarse pigment for average ceramic caoting is generally much cheaper.). The art supplier would time that price twice or even triple and more selling small quanlities. You might want to skip that and find the resource from pigment manufactures directly.

It is very time consuming to mile pigments, while earth colors for example often take less time, others can take up to the whole day to combine withe the oil, and some pigments are toxic and should not be breathed in by any circumstances.

Those expensive tubes won't make you a better painter .
In the past the masters used poor quality compared to today .
Today we're dealing with a huge marketing machine .
They charge huge prices for some oils with pigments in them which is absurd .

    • @tanyamattiss

I agree that expensive paints wont make you a better artist, but the Benefit of these paints is that they contain more pigment and lesser filler. That will make them last longer than cheaper paints.
And I don't think that the old master used poor quality paint. They were limited with the range of pigments, but their paints were all well milled and mixed with the highest quality oil, which probably could not be found anywhere these days.
That's what good painting brands try to achieve, and yes of course there is marketing and the people want to earn their money, but thats still cheaper than milling the pigments yourself ;)

@@tanyamattiss thing is that I hate that the tubes are so small . They want to charge as more as possible for as less as possible . I think with a small lab and some knowledge someone can cook and prepare those pigments with a 2% or less of the real cost . On Ebay 8 kg of pure cadmium cost 170$ 🤣They buy the cadmium with even less . Basically the real cost of the materials would be maximum 2% of what you pay . Of course you add the work to grind and mix the pigments and pack those in the tubes but that don't justify the rest of 98% of the price . The price is 10x pumped

In that case you could buy some pigments and a glass muller etc. and make your own paint. But make sure to not use any toxic pigments
People who make their own paint, claim that this is the best quality you can get, and if you are into this, why not trying

Kann ja jeder drauf schreiben was er will.
