    Yes, I realized that I miscalculated when I said $4,000/month is around $50K a year in salary (this is what happens when lawyers do math). I forgot to mention taxes, so really, if you spend $4,000/month you are probably making $70K a year in salary.
    Also, a lot of people have commented that $4,000/month seems like a lot. If you don't have student loans (or don't pay as much as I do per month) or you don't tithe then you can probably cut down the costs to about $2,400/month or less.

    READ BEFORE COMMENTING: Yes, I realized I miscalculated when I said $4,000/month is a $50k/year salary. I forgot about taxes (this is what happens when lawyers do math). A $4,000/month budget would equal more of a $70k/year salary. However! If you don't have as big of a student loan payment as I do or you don't tithe and if you don't take into consideration the buffer, your monthly budget could be much closer to $2,400 or $2,100 if you have no student loan.

    You give 10% of your monthly income...to God? What is he gonna do with that money? Watch you struggle financially as he takes it away from you? I would never give money to a church, they chose that life, and they beg for money? Not my cup of tea, but you know what, do as you do.

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  6 років тому +20

      the way I see it, the money was never mine to begin with because it belongs to God...it's not necessarily that we are giving it to the church and they are not begging for it but it's something that I want to do as an act of faith. I actually find that when I trust God and give, he blesses me financially and in other ways in my life so I'm not struggling!

      I think it's a lovely thing to do, provided your church does something good with that money. Are they using it to help people, or just building a bigger, fancier church? To me, that's the real question.

    Its very possible to live in the city when one makes more than 50k. Even leaves room for a savings. Especially if one has a two bed and a roommate and/or just a one bed with partner.... this is assuming no student loans and car payments.

    I enjoyed this breakdown on the budget. I don't ever plan to live in NY (but I LOVE to visit!), but I find it interesting how much things cost in different areas of the country. I would recommend using the extra money left over to save (you always need some money to rely on for emergencies) and pay off those student loans faster. Getting out of debt is my #1 priority because I know I will be able to do SO much more once my debt is gone, and my debt payments are only about 20% of what you pay.

      Let me rephrase; do NOT listen to this person for advice on budget. If your firm offers you a starting salary of 50k, see what your biweekly NET paycheck will come out to. If you don't believe me; ask me how much I care. Good Luck.

      Hi Brian! Yes, if you read my description I note that I made a mistake and forgot about the taxes. You are correct that a $4,000/month budget is not $50K/year. However, without student loans your monthly budget could be much less (closer to $2100/month)

      unrealistic in that you can't spend that much per month? Do you have a student loan? if not, you can take out $1400 per month. but yes, if you read my description I miscalculated and at $4,000/month that's more for someone making 70k a year.

  • @amipoke3341
    @amipoke3341 6 років тому

    Nice video. I like it. But there is one point that I disagree with. Everyone is paying tax. So if you make 50k a year. You only get to keep 2800 a month around that. And if someone get to keep 4000 a month. It means they make around 4000/0.75 * 12 =65k a year.

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  6 років тому

      you are correct. If you read my description, I updated it after I posted because I realized that I didn't take tax into consideration. However, for most people who don't have large student loans like I do, their monthly budget can be around $2100.

  • @aw8758
    @aw8758 6 років тому

    This is good advice but 50k per year doesn’t equal 4K a month. So. Should’ve worked out 50k per year since u started off like that not combining ur husband income

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  6 років тому

      Hi! Yes, you are correct...if you read my description I note that I made a mistake and forgot about the taxes. My budget is meant to be for 1 person without someone else's income but if you don't have any student loans or pay tithe, your monthly budget could be closer to $2100/month, which is way under $50K/year.

    I just got accepted to UCI as a Computer Science major. What is your advise for a college student's budget?

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  6 років тому

      Congrats! For college, it's difficult because you are not making any money. Usually your first 1-2 years you pay for dorm housing and dorm food, so my advice would be to stick to the dorm food and try not to go out to eat since you have already pre-paid for dorm food. Once you are able to move out of dorm housing, I would suggest rooming with 1-2 people so that you can share the cost of an apartment. My other tips apply - eat and cook at home to try to save money and limit extraneous items to a minimum (eating out, shopping, going on trips etc.).

    Whoa, how much student loan do you have? Should really be living as frugal as possible and focus on paying off your debts. After that you can start saving for 3-6 months of emergency fund and start investing for retirement. At your current rate without making any adjustment, you are likely to struggle financially near retirement. My two cents.

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  6 років тому +8

      this is actually not my true true budget since this is for someone who makes about $50K/year in salary. With me and my husband's actual salaries combined, we have extra money each month to put towards savings and investments (I just didn't include that in the video since this was a sample). the way I think about it, paying the standard amount each month to pay off my student loans in 10 years makes the most sense for me now because I'd rather have liquid cash to use for other opportunities in the present.

      That was the whole point of the video, +echuynh. She is paying a fairly high monthly rate, which is ideal for people making over $100,000 a year, a 10 year plan. If she takes your advice and pays extra, not only will she have no funds to pay for other aspects of her life (thus lowering her quality of living and health), but she will have no money to put into retirement at a steady rate.
