    I made a Cathedral Window quiLt once, it ended up being a pillow. You make it look so simple I may have to try again. It is so beautiful when you see a whole quilt made with this pattern.

      I calculated it will take me 506 10 x 10 inch squares to make my king sized quilt! That’s not counting the colorful squares!! I may have to settle for a pillow too! 😉

    I've been working on a Cathedral Windows quilt (queen). I clicked on this because I wanted to see how the pillow was done -- specifically how to attach the backing. Way more simple than I thought. Seams I was worried about nothing really. But making the windows in this "origami envelope" method is MUCH easier than the traditional method -- and faster. It is also much more accurate (for me). I haven't decided whether I will hand-stitch or machine-sew the windows open. As for the pillow, I will make an envelope style backing so the pillow form can be removed for washing the case (or replacing the pillow form itself). Thanks for the video.

    Jen, what an excellent video to making cathedral quilt squares. I have to say, It makes me miss my grandmother. This was her favorite quilt to make. She hand sewed all of hers and one of her quilts she actually took and hand tied the centers instead of quilting. ;) We still have some of her pillows that she made. When I have time, I'm going to have to give this a try. Looks easy enough, but extremely time consuming, so I will have to set aside some time. LOL.... thanks again....

    I have this going, but hand sewing. I find it more relaxing and can take it with me once I have the squares folded. I love the idea of the template for pressing the raw edge to start. I had not thought about that so it was aha moment. Thanks!

      Also I do not sew the back and front and turn as you have shown. I sandwich them together and sew .25 seam and do a binding around like you would a quilt. This also gives you a chance to add some color accent binding.

  • @allisonh5298

    After watching your video yesterday, I made this pillow. It took me 4 hours, but that includes time (about an hour) contemplating my fabric stash and doing the math to determine the larger square size needed to use smaller blocks. I used lite weight heat and bond to secure the smaller squares and triangles in place. Most of the labor for this is in the cutting and pressing (~2hrs). If you can edgestitch curves with some precision then you can sew this pillow too! Mine is supercute bright green solid with pinks and blues panes. I'll definitely be doing this again.

    Jen,
    Love all your videos. Your cheerful presentation brightens my day. I so wish, though, that you would either get an extension bed table for your machine or have someone cut a hole in your table to sink your machine in. Having a nice flat surface to sew on is so much easier. Trying to sew on the narrow machine bed causes lots of frustration. I sunk my machine years ago and I’ll never go back.
    Mwah!

    Hello, I just found this video, because I wanted to learn this technique, and I did! I made a make up bag for my cousin as a present, and hope she'll like it. Anyway, I would appreciate it if you could show all the steps more in detail. Like in the end, when you talked about closing the pillow, I wasn't quite sure, how thick my seam should be and so on. :) But the rest I really loved. Thank you.

      That is so great to hear! Glad this tutorial was helpful for you! For closing your pillow, you will lay your cathedral window piece (pillow front) and your chosen backing fabric right sides together. You will then sew around the perimeter using a quarter inch seam allowance, leaving a four or five inch opening. Then, you will turn your pillow right-side-out and stuff with your desired filling. Once it is stuffed, you will use a whip stitch to sew the opening shut!
      Please let me know if you need any additional instructions :)

    Thanks. Great options and possibilities. You did not mention a binding and I am thinking, no binding. Instead of cutting the half-squares for the edge, why not fold them under, sew them down along the outside and leave them like that? As long as the edge is not pulled and stressed in use, why would it come apart? So, thanks for the demonstration and sparking some ideas and possibilities.

    When you fold the fabric (smile form to cover the small color square) do use a glue, it will help you to see if they are identical and if not, to peel it and try again. only a suggestion.

    Great idea, love your videos. Maybe practice more for your video. You did a lot of starting out of your concept , then changing your mind, put out fabric, then changing your mind, move squares into place, then changing your mind, start to sew, then change your mind, etc., etc. and can imagine it's a little nerve racking at times when you're explaining idea. Trust me, you are amazing, just didn't seem confident much on this video. Use play back and see what I mean. I don't mean any harm. Keep making these videos. Ideas are great.

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  8 років тому +5

      We always make sure practice our videos and projects before filming. In order to keep our tutorials genuine and not scripted or stiff we think it is important to keep them as if we are teaching a friend. Making decisions and adapting in the moment is something that everyone who sews can relate to. Thank you so much for your input and for taking the time to watch!

    Instead of the square to iron around I’d be doing long running/stay stitch but I’m an exact sewer and can see a straight line
    The thread can be pulled later it’s just my way of “perforation for easier folding

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  10 місяців тому +1

      Hi Helen - It seems like we need a bit more information as to where/how you'd like to use the three fabrics you're referring to - this method does use 3 fabrics to create the cathedral window effect. Are you perhaps trying to showcase 3 fabrics on the inside of the window? Please let us know how we can best help answer your query. -Michelle

      @@ShabbyFabrics Thank you for the quick reply. What I’m trying to do is make a table runner out of this pattern, so mine would be a rectangle. My question is would it be possible to use the white background and another color, in addition to the fabric in the window? This way the white fabric would be more of an accent . Do you have a cathedral window runner tutorial? I couldn’t find one. I’ve watched others but I like Jen’s version. I love the Shabby Fabric tutorials and I’ve learned a lot! Thank you!

  • @jkarlsonfl

    Beautiful technique. When you were stitching each window it looked like you just cut the threads. Does the end have to be backed stitched or knotted in some way so the threads don't come out. Not a quilter...yet, but lover all your videos. I've made many, many of your fat quarter backpacks with your tutorial. Thank you for all the time you put into these videos.

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  7 років тому

      So awesome to hear you've made so many backpacks!
      In this case, there is no need to back-stitch since you can continue your stitch down an entire row. You can see what I'm referencing around 16:12 :)
