I like this pattern and ordered the pattern. Today I cut and folded and ironed. Thank you for doing this video. I would never have finished without you!
the best video i've found for showing how to make these. I do have one question: Does the poly thread melt when using the hot pads on a hot handle of a pot?
We have subjected our hot pads to various heat tests without experiencing negative consequences. More likely, the fabric will burn before the thread does. Please note that we have not used these for a "fresh off the stove hot iron skillet". Hope this makes sense!! -Michelle
What a beautiful pattern, especially with the colors and large print! I would make this in red, white, and blue! So many holidays to use it on! Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July, Veterans Day, which was inspired by Armistice Day, November 11th! Love your videos!

What a beautiful project! I've been looking at this since you sent the email wondering how to make it. It's so gorgeous. I love your tutorials and lovely products.
Awesome tutorial! Thank you so much for slowly and with explanation going through all the steps to complete this beautiful piece. I may actually need to shop now! LOL!!!
Thanks for the video. I recently bought the pattern but was a little confused on how to make it. Your video made everything so much clearer. Everything came out good except for my binding. My stitching didn't always catch the back binding. Any tips on how to be sure you catch the back when sewing in the ditch from the front?
Love this tutorial, your explanations and demonstration is easy to follow. Sorry if I missed this step, but, what did you use for a batting to deflect the heat so you don't get burned? I didn't see it mentioned in the supply list.
I think I like this better than the circle. If it is a hot pad and want to use insulating material, How much would I have to adjust the fabric to cover the make it easy to bind and not be too bulky.
Thanks for watching! You may try cutting the insulating material just smaller than the project. That way, the size will stay the same and you can bind without difficulty! Did you see that we just released the square version in a few new colors? www.shabbyfabrics.com/Kits/Hot-Pads.aspx -Carolyn
I really like these and would love to try to make one. It's been a long time since I've done any real sewing though, so I would definitely need a kit. My colour choices would include green and fall colours, or Christmas colours. Can't decide.
Yes! You can purchase this kit in particular when you click on this link: www.shabbyfabrics.com/folded-star-square-hot-pad-kit-anastasia-P98642.aspx?ref=SearchAutocomplete - Yajaira
OMGosh! I have so much scrap fabric just itching to be hot pads! And my crazy pattern combining is perfect for this project..... I think the Monet and the Picasso in me are screaming to be released into hot pad land. Ordered 12 templates but I bet I will want more. Christmas presents here I come...😂💕
If you don't want to use monopoly thread, u can use a nutual color thread. Test the color of ur thread by laying a strand across the fabric. One that is a little darker tends to hide better. Shorten ur stitch length just a little. Do a test on some scrap fabric 1st and see how it goes. It's amazing how much that little thread line disappears. :) Using an all purpose cotton or cotton/poly blend works best.
Thanks for such a great video! I'm anxious to make my first ones. How does the mono poly thread hold up with the high heat in the pot holder version of the folded star?
This is a great tutorial! Happy that you liked it! For the monopoly, we have tested these and the monopoly seems to hold up just fine. Heat-wise, your fabric would most likely burn before the monopoly melts, so we would not recommend putting a “fresh from the oven” cast iron skillet on these, but they do work well as pot holders and hot pads. Hope this helps! - Abby
So cute!! I question is I rewound this back several times (to see if I’ve missed it ) where did you take the paper off the back or did you leave it on?
I very been working on one from yesterday, and finally finished it today it was a tough one. It was brutal on my machine. I dont know what I did to make it so thick. I used a jeans needle too. I ended up having to hand sew the binding on the back. I also used a walking foot to help, widened the stitch and went very slow. The first one I made went great.
Yes, sometimes those layers can be a bit tricky, depending on the type of machine you are sewing on. We are proud of you for completing the hot pad! Thanks for watching!! -Michelle
Great tutorial! Question regarding the binding- is there an advantage to using the sleeve method demonstrated vs. the more traditional quilt technique of a diagonal seam? Thank you!
What caught my attention is the pretty wreath arrangement behind you. Just love that. Do u think you can make a ideo on that one? thank u, from Manila, Philippines.
Love this - and the round. Curious: why just batting and not insul bright in place of the batting? I imagine it's won't cause the earth to tilt off its axis if I use the insul instead of batting, -- right? Thanks. Love your site and patterns!
@@ShabbyFabrics I will use I s’il rite when I will make mine. Should I put 2 layers? I have never made hot pads. I’m looking forward to making them, for myself and for gifts, they’re so beautiful! 🌸🌺
I'm absolutely new to everything I'm seeing here. I just bought a sewing machine and started a few weeks ago with tote bags. As a beginner, do you think this could be a project for me? My machine is a Brother. I wonder if the presser foot you refer to is available for my machine. This is a great video. I'll have to do quite a bit of shopping to start this!!
We are very glad you're enjoying your new craft! This could definitely be a project for you- it would depend on your skill and confidence level, but as you know, we have many tutorials to help you out! The presser foot Jen mentions is specific to the Bernina machine, but a comparable one for the Brother is probably the F057 patchwork foot. Hope this helps! 💖 -Michelle
Use 100% cotton thread for hot pads as polyester melts at higher temperatures. 100% cotton may scorch, but it won’t melt on your cabinets, pots, pans or bakeware. Ask me how I know this. Yeah, a cast iron skillet and 2 loaf pans ruined by using poly thread. Along with a section of cabinet. I used the pot holders on the cabinet & set the hot bread pans on the hot pads to cool for a minute. The skillet, I was taking it off the burner and the handle was hot enough to melt the thread while I was holding the skillet. You can bet I set it down fast. Only minor burns that I treated at home. Please learn from my experience and don’t use anything made of polyester in the kitchen.
Love your videos! You are so thorough, and fun. I am looking at this pattern after making the Morning Star version, and was wondering if the corner pieces are also called Prairie Points too, or does that fold type have different name?
Hi Grace M - The cut sizes for the fabrics are on the inside cover of this pattern. We're unable to disclose them due to the designer's copyrights. -Michelle
HI.Lovely pattern. Can you please tell me. Do you leave the template paper in the potholder when you place the backing fabric on?And if so,how does it go when washing the finished item.
Hi BeadingBelles. We're happy you enjoy this fun hotpad design. The template paper we used for this hot pad is designed to be sewn in, and it's find when washed. Hope this makes sense! 💖 -Michelle
Sure! A simple explanation would be "Starch is used to stiffen fabrics such as shirt collars and cuffs, while sizing is used to add body, “crispness” and “hand” to garments." [ everythingwhat . com]. We find the sizing spray we use to give us the stiffness we need without compromising the integrity of the fabric. We prefer the end result of using a sizing spray instead of traditional starch. Hope that makes sense! -Michelle

Hi! Thank you for the Folded Star Squared Tutorial. Could you tell me which green thread that was used for the bobbin thread to stitch down the binding? Thank you for your help.
Hello! Glad you enjoyed the video! We have a variety of green thread that is available on our site! Here is the link to that: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Green-Threads.aspx - Yajaira
Love this tutorial! Question for you. Are we supposed to leave the paper on when putting the batting and backing on? Or are you using some kind of heat resistant film?
Hi Terry- We're glad you enjoy this fun project. The thin interfacing template that we use from PlumEasy Patterns is designed to be sew into the project, so we leave ours on it when assembling. Hope that makes sense. 💖 -Michelle
Question.. in the video it appears that the binding did not fully catch when you stitched it on, did I see that right? I have a very difficult time making sure mine are lined up. How would you fix this? Beautiful hot pads!
Great question! One of the best ways to make sure that your binding is all lined up is using the wonder clips that she uses in the video. It helps keep things secured and in place. Another recommendation that you can try is pressing it down. Hope this helps. - Yajaira
Hi Sharon - If you're referring to the fabric we used for these square folded star hot pads, these prints are from the Anastasia line by P & B Textiles. While we are out of these fabrics, I think the Sweet Blush Rose collection may have similar prints: www.shabbyfabrics.com/c5999/fabrics/fabrics-by-collection/sweet-blush-rose 💖 -Michelle
Hi Jen, I have a question for the square ones are the four corners also 5” square to start. Every time I make them the corners seems to be smaller than the triangles and I was wondering g if they should start bigger. Thanks love all your videos!!!!

Hi I really enjoyed this tutorial/video. I have an order ready to go to get the kit and instructions. It looks like so much fun to do. I have another question. I was watching your video/tutorial on making the no sew styrafoam ball ornaments. Amazing as well. I can't find the 3" balls in my area. You are using the 2.5 strips does this affect my placement on the ornament if I am using either the 4" or the 2" ball. Thank you in advance.
I believe that it would throw off the sizing a little bit on the styrofoam balls. However, you may find 3" styrofoam balls on Amazon for about $8.00. So.... I just made my first square hot pad. This is what I learned. You must be extremely precise both in cutting and especially in folding and ironing. The starch is essential. - Abby
Love this. Going to order and get going on some Christmas gifts!
This will make great gifts for Christmas! You will have fun!😊 Thanks for your comment! - Abby
These are great.
I think I have a set of papers I bought at a Craft Show. I'll have to dig thrm out.
Great instruction
Glad it was helpful! - Yajaira
My fav is Blue Sky and I’m in luv w cardinal Noel, I’m going to order both fabrics!!!!
Great idea! - Yajaira
So cute!! I question is I rewound this back several times (to see if I’ve missed it ) where did you take the paper off the back or did you leave it on?
It’s left on the back
Shirley is correct-we leave the non-woven interfacing templates on our hot pads and it acts as a stabilizer of sorts. -Michelle
Can the hot pad be washed?
I really cannot wait to try making one!
It is so exciting! - Yajaira
Your directions are fantastic. It's a gorgeous project!
Glad you found it helpful! Thank you! - Yajaira
can you use Elmer's glue stick for the glue? BTW wonderful tutorial'
You sure can! Sometimes we use the purple glue stick for our projects too :) -Michelle
Thank you!
Great question! It's just an different binding option that we wanted to show you. We're glad you enjoyed this video. Thanks for watching! 💖 -Michelle
What caught my attention is the pretty wreath arrangement behind you. Just love that. Do u think you can make a ideo on that one? thank u, from Manila, Philippines.
Thanks for the suggestion! We will pass this along to our Creative Team! :)
- Beth
Love this - and the round. Curious: why just batting and not insul bright in place of the batting? I imagine it's won't cause the earth to tilt off its axis if I use the insul instead of batting, -- right? Thanks. Love your site and patterns!
You can certainly use inusl bright we like to use our batting scraps with little projects like this. - Yajaira
🌸🌺 I was wondering the same thing. Thanks for asking.
@@ShabbyFabrics I will use I s’il rite when I will make mine. Should I put 2 layers? I have never made hot pads. I’m looking forward to making them, for myself and for gifts, they’re so beautiful! 🌸🌺
Hi Jen..... love those hot pads..... and I love that rose fabric your using......lovely....almost too lovely to use...lol 😃
Right! - Yajaira
💖 -Michelle
Thank you for showing me in detail how to do this, as I have been struggling to make my hot pads. Happy New Year to you Sandra x
We're glad this tutorial has been helpful for you, Sandra. Thanks for watching! ✨ -Michelle
We hope you are okay. Thank you for sharing. - Yajaira
Thanks so much.
I rarely use cotton thread because its so linty. I wouldn't have thought to use it.
Thank you for the very important information!
I thought I heard they poly clear doesn't melt the mono filiment does.
@@janetflint8202 I used polyneon on one an invisible poly on the hot pads I put the bread pans on. All I learned was “no poly in the kitchen” for me.
Good use for rotary mat! Just got my pattern and extra templates; and a couple sets of fat quarters. It’s party time!🤣😍
Woo! Sounds like a great time! - Yajaira
This is a useful tutorial!
I’d use Christmas theme material 💕
Great idea! - Yajaira
Looks so great good job 👍👍🤝🤝
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed it! Don't forget to check out the Christmas Hot Pad! - Yajaira
Love your videos! You are so thorough, and fun. I am looking at this pattern after making the Morning Star version, and was wondering if the corner pieces are also called Prairie Points too, or does that fold type have different name?
Hi PrincessEvilGenius - Yes, those would be considered Prairie Points too. Thanks so much for watching. We're happy you enjoy our projects! -Michelle
Love the video now to make a pot holder❤
So glad this one inspires you! Thanks for watching!! -Michelle
These are beautiful! I definitely want to try these.
Please do! They are so fun to make too! - Yajaira
Love this hot pad, is it possible to give the cut size of the triangle? I bought this pattern but it didn't come with instructions... Thank you
Hi Grace M - The cut sizes for the fabrics are on the inside cover of this pattern.
💖 -Michelle
@@ShabbyFabrics Thanks so much for your reply. You have answered my question.
I did the circular one in coffee them and it is beautiful!! A chicken / rooster them would be pretty
Hi Luwana! What a great idea! We'd love to see the finished product. - Sophie
Can you explain the difference in starch and sizing?
-Michelle
Where can the pattern and instructions located? Thank you For your detailed instructions and upclose views that really helps.
We're glad you enjoyed this tutorial! You can find the template from Plum Easy here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Search.aspx?k=Folded+Star+Hot+Pad+Interfacing+Template+pk Thanks for watching! -Michelle
💖 -Michelle
Great tutorial, very informative😃. Beautiful job💕💕. I would like to make one in red, white, and blue❤️🤍💙. Thanks for sharing🙏🏻
Thank you! Cheers! - Yajaira
Could I Make the back bigger and make a self binding instead od doing the binding like you did? Think I'm going to try it.
That sounds like a possibility - we haven't attempted it this way, so we'd love to know how it turns out for you! Thanks for watching. 💖 -Michelle
These are beautiful 💜
They are! - Yajaira
Question.. in the video it appears that the binding did not fully catch when you stitched it on, did I see that right? I have a very difficult time making sure mine are lined up. How would you fix this? Beautiful hot pads!
Great question! One of the best ways to make sure that your binding is all lined up is using the wonder clips that she uses in the video. It helps keep things secured and in place. Another recommendation that you can try is pressing it down. Hope this helps. - Yajaira
i found my pattern to make them. i have made them and there are so fun.
That is great to hear! Happy that you enjoyed this project and thanks for your comment! - Abby
I’m ordering, I messed up and made two orders instead of one..I love these colors.
Aren't these so fun?! Thank you for watching! - Sophie
I want to know we’re to buy the quilters print. Many stores don’t have good fabric corners anymore.
We are very glad you enjoy these fun hot pads! The Folded Star Squared pattern includes all of the measurements for the cuts of fabric: www.shabbyfabrics.com/search?sortOrder=6&q=folded+star+pattern 💖 -Michelle
Here is the link to that: www.amazon.com/Inch-Smooth-Foam-Balls-Christmas/dp/B07WXMXZ26/ref=sr_1_27?dchild=1&keywords=styrofoam+balls&qid=1603906257&sr=8-27 - Yajaira
Love this pattern. What is the fabric line used in the tutorial? It is so beautiful.
