I have been looking for this patter for years. When I was younger I made one as a pillow by hand and loved the pattern. During my moves with my hubby due to job moves I lost my pattern. A dear friend of mine told me how to get to this site for the tutorial and I am eternally grateful to her. Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial. Can hardly wait to get started. Took a class and made a pillow. I loved this as I wasn't committed to a full quilt but learned the process and to know I would never make a full quilt! I love the idea of a table runner.
Sewing the square and turning inside out is a brilliant start! I made a pillow cover (the old way) and can tell you that white glue is your best friend to avoid horrible puckering in the end result. I thin my Elmer’s glue down slightly with water and use a bottle with a tiny tip. Use a few dots to glue down the coloured squares so they do not shift. The iron dries the glue instantly and it holds beautifully. Then use glue to hold all those curves in place. With everything glued you can stitch all of the curves easily and smoothly, without any annoying pins, in ONE continuous line if you plan it out in advance. The glue will wash out when you finally get around to having to wash the item.
My grandmother made my uncle a shirt out of this. If you're old enough to remember the men's western shirts in the 70's/80's, some had a different patterned yoke. The shirt was beautiful but I could never figure out how she did it. NOW I understand. Thank you for finally enlightening me. I may try it myself. :)

Beautifully done ... simple and easy. (But, I'll have to get use to no batting ... even tho your looks like a light weight/thin batting has been used ... bet it holds up better and dries faster your way.) Will be giving it a try.
Followed your directions to make this in a king size quilt. My question...how is the best way to add rows? I made my first three rows, put all the windows in, made the next three rows. Added those to sections together. However, putting the windows in that center row took about 4 hours! Would it be easiest to do row by row? Any tricks you could offer to make the points look fairly decent? This is 14 blocks across and about 15 rows. This will take me awhile!!! Thanks for a great tutorial
I made three rows like you said and the bigger it gets the harder it gets with that large quilt and turning around those curves. .any suggestions from anyone would be appreciated.

if your making a quilt instead of a table runner when would be the best time to tack the corners because if you do it too soon when still having to connect rows after rows in a quilt.
Do you have any suggestions as how to make it easy when doing a queen sign quilt. It becomes very bulkie to sew. Going around those curves is so hard with all that large quilt. I love this quilt and it was so fun to make until it got so large. Help if you can

Hello is very interesting this project, I would like to make one for a good friend by Christmas, I like to sawing just I made one T shirt blankets, and I think I can do this one too, is so beautiful. What size of little Squers I would need if my withe big I change 16x16 for 20x20, thank you so much
Flannel can be unpredictable....meaning there are many flannels which are thread-count poor (fewer threads per sq. inch in manufacture). The problem can be shrinkage, depending on quality of flannel. I have also learned that laundering can help pre-shrink flannel; but some flannels continue to shrink up to four washing's and drying's.

It comes out too flat, without the three dimensional quality that makes Cathedral Windows so cool looking. Plus, a lot of us enjoy the handwork and having a true Cathedral Window project going always gives us something to do in down times. I feel like I'm tied to my sewing machine enough. It's a pleasure to take something with me on car trips or whatever.
Cathedral Window is beautiful because it looks 3 dimensional but when it is made with a sewing machine it loses the look that makes it beautiful. The machine one looks flat so you might as well just buy a printed one.
That design loses a lot when it’s done on the machine. What I like about the Cathedral window is the 3D effect but that’s lost when you have to flatten the design on the sewing machine.
This was all perfect until it wasn’t! Stitching the curved edges down by machine made this into a faux cathedral window. The charm of a cathedral window is that it has that 3 dimensional quality! It lost that! Faux cathedral window!

What about FMQ the windows on those rows? Just a thought.
I did one, and made two of the 16 inch blocks and one cathedral. I will continue on and see where it goes, too hot upstairs to sew right now.

I simply took two short stitches forward and two backward and 2 forward to secure the tips of the folded points.

How big was your fabric pieces cut?
I’m assuming you lay all the base light color before you add the color facric

How do we decide the size of base square? For a 16" initial square, how big is the final (folded) square ?
I"m starting with a 16" square and the final square is about 7 1/2"
