#RAM3500 #Towing #6%Grade
Beautiful truck same color as my Ram Dually. Mine is a 2011 I bought in September of 2012 to haul travel trailers for a living. It now has over 1 million miles on it.
The major advantage Dodge has is the superior exhaust brake, as compared to Ford and Chevy. Control coming down a grade is of utmost importance vwhen towing, plus it prolongs brake life. A little bit slower up the hill is fine by me if I have the best exhaust brake controlling the load descending the grade.
💯
Couldn’t agree more ! I cooked my trailer brakes hauling a skidsteer down a long steep grade with my 2014 f450 (welding rig)
I absolutely love my 2019 3500 dually. Bought it new, in April 2019 and couldn't be happier!
The 19.5 wheel and tire package offers several advantages. Much longer tire life, more durable tires, higher load capacity and lower rolling resistance. The Ford F450 has a nearly 9 foot shorter turning radius than the Ram. That sure makes it easier to live with a dually as a daily driver. I own a 2020 F450. I love it, but kudos to Ram, they are really nice rigs.
I also own a F450. You are correct on all counts. The turning radius is wonderful. The 19.5 truck tires will be going strong while the LT tires are changed several times.
I must admit, I own a 2019, 3500 dually, and the one thing I'd like to have is the turning radius of the 450.
They use plastic A arms on their front end.
@@kdrapertrucker not on the 2500/3500 they don't. There are solid axle trucks.
@Kenneth Draper you do realize that Ram and Ford have solid axle 3/4 and up trucks, right?????
I agree on the Diesel Exhaust Break, I haven't driven a Ford or GM Diesel so I'm kind of biased. My 15 Ram 3500 SRW short bed has had no issues with anything I have hooked up to it thus far. But, open car trailer with 67 C-10, 2021 Cherokee Grey Wolf 23DBH and echo trailer with 2019 Polaris RZR XP4 1000 are my only tests. DEB has been amazing and I get better fuel economy then the 5.3L 2003 GMC Yukon XL with and without a trailer attached. When we go to a heavy 5th wheel and need a dually it will probably be the Ram, because my wife likes the styling and I like the tech.
I gotta stop watching your vids. I got. 2021 F150. Now I want a big ole 1 ton truck. Nice job!
Dude it’s even harder for me because I keep coming to the realization I need at least 6 truck in my life to be fully complete 😂! Thanks bro 👍🏾
I know I have a 2021 Ram 1500 feel like I need a dually now lol
I've had them all over the years and I love Ram .
Ew a light duty ……..
Rocket is fast too, but only last one trip. If you look at things in life, slow things have longer life and fast things short life. For example cheetahs are fast but life expectancy is 12 years max, turtle is slow but expectancy is 80 years max.
I wish I could find that exact truck with the air suspension in the rear...I really like that Ram went back to the CP3 over the crappy CP4.2.
First time I'm going to make a comment! I've owned both Dodges and Ford's all the way up to F650! The most dependable trucks with overall best fuel mileage has been all my CUMMINS ENGINES, yes even in my NISSIAN Titan Pro4X heavy half ton which I've pulled a bumper pull trailer 7×7×16 LOADED with furniture over many high mountain passes alomg with my new 39,2 foot toy hauler with a 12 ft garage with a goldwing and tent camper trailer in garage through same places! But I did miss the overall stability of the dually in high wind conditions! So I just got my new 2021 Dodge Ram Larime with 4:10 rear end with self leveling air bags, 4×4 ALSO! All I can say is what a beast of a truck! Yes really did consider going with a FORD just because of the 10 automatic!
But truly EVERYONE only looks the trucks and NEVER looks at tire ratings and speed rates in their trailers! Please correct if you can!! 99.9% of all trailer tires MADE are speed rates MOSTLY ONLY up to 65mph! Yes any truck set up for pulling can do much faster! And most importantly pull real hill grades! As a professional truck in my work Life, fast is great but TIRES ON MOAT TRAILERS ARE NOT RATED FOR MORE THAN 65MPH! ALONG WITH Different types bais verse radial tires, PEOPLE REALLY NEED TO UNDERSTAND THIS, THAT'S WHY THEY HAVE SO MANY BLOW OUTS AND ACCIDENTS ALONG WITH NEVER CHECKING THEIR TIRE PRESSURES! HELL I EVEN HAD A HARD TIME FINDING TRAILER TIRES RATED FOR 70MPH FOR MY MOTORCYCLE CAMPER TRAILER!!
I have this same truck but in black and a 2021. I tow a 42 ft 5th wheel with a hitch weight of 3200 pounds full of all our junk. The truck only squats 3 some inches. It's a great truck. Only time you know your towing is taking off and slowing down with the exhaust brake being louder than when empty. If I stay at 65 to 67 I get 10.5 to 11 all day if there is no wind and big climbs. Those dually really shine when it's windy out that's where I really noticed the biggest difference. I wanted a 450 but the exhaust brake on the ram really shines. Great video
Thanks, what trailer are you pulling?
@@JB_WhoWork lol what's funny is u did a review on the 5th wheel we bought! It might even be the one we bought. 2021 377fl montana high country from Beckley's rv. Ever in va beach area hit me up!
That is awesome!!!!! I remember dry hitch weight was like 2500#’s...... crazy! What’s your email?
Thanks for teasing me JB. You know that is the truck I’ve been looking for. Great teaser brother!
😎 you’re welcome brother!
Great video. I have a 2021 Ram 3500 HD Tradesman that I tow a 35 foot fifth wheel. I live in Alaska and climbed Thompson Pass going into Valdez, and that truck never slowed down. Engine temp got up to 210 and tranny temp never got above 167. Thompson Pass has a max gradient of 7.2% climbing to 2660 feet above sea level. Going down, my exhaust brake (in auto mode on all hywys) never allowed me to get over 55 mph. This truck is a beast, and is a very stable platform.
My neighbor just bought a new Mega cab HO dually! Y’all both killin’ me!!
Lol! It’s time bro, go ahead and get that 4500 to show us up 😂😂😂
14:18 it’s not the 4:30 that made the f450 faster it’s got 75 more hp and 50 ft lbs more torque. The Cummins is all torque and grunt it was actually at the perfect rpm in your tests.
It's hard to beat a Ram 🐏 I've had them all over my 61 years and Ram has been the best for me . I'm driving a 2020 1500 off road package Ram now but next year I'll trade it for a 2500 as I up grade my 25 foot camper to a fifth wheel . I'm full time RV the last 2 years. Retired and loven it lol .
I bought a 2021 Ram 3500 Hemi crewcab longbed 4x4 Tradesman. Paid 40k and love it. I live full time in my 30ft Grand Design RV that weighs 9k I'm right in the sweet spot. Loving life👍🙏🇺🇸🏁🍺
Give me a good old straight six for long term durability/reliability. From my 6.7 Cummins to the sweet little 3 series I bought the wifey a while back. My 12 valve 5.9 and then way, WAY back to my 1963 Ford Fairlane with three on the tree, Lol!
If Ram & Allison Transmissions Can Agree on Working Together, Already Ram Trucks Are Great Vehicles, it Will Be Awesome Truck will Allison Transmissions Behind them..
Is that ever going to happen...
Nice truck!
Yup, wouldn’t be a bad addition to your 450 👀
My 2020 3500 Laramie night edition HO Pulls Everything and Anything !

Love the exhaust brake! I do not have a 6.7 cummins nor have I ever driven one. I’ve had the old 5L isx in my 16 kenworth and I have the X15 in my shaker love the engine brake,I haul doubles cross country out of Arizona and we average over 8.0mpg a week and we run between 7,000-8,000 miles a week. We have had emissions problems with our cummins though we’ve sat a few times lol
You always need to go up two truck sizes on a ford or gm to compete with a ram.also with a ford you need to calculate for two payments monthly one to the bank and the other to the repair shop.
lol ram seem to be in my shop alot
Buying a Ram 3500 DRW is no different than purchasing life insurance. It's nice to have it and not need it, THAN to need it and not have it......owner of a 2019 Ram HO DRW and love it....
You're killing me fam I can't decide between this truck and a Ford F-450.
Sorry man, After towing with this dually, I think RAM makes a phenomenal Dually in its current form. Whatever you can get a deal on is what I would shoot for, thanks for sharing bro 👍🏾
I'm a Ram guy, but I would go with the fresher body style. This Ram is looking tired.
Go Ford if turning radius and gearing are your priorities. Cummins wins the easier to work on, and industrial duty engine.
I would say for price probably the 3500 you tend to not get as good more much-needed off on them because there more "HD" And commercial I think that kyd (Keepyourdaydream) had a video on that topic not comparing but price wise hope you decide I would go ram I've always loved rams will only get a ram
I think this is it ua-cam.com/video/Pf8_1PHsZQ8/v-deo.html
Here i am happy with my ( Original Owner )2007 CC f-350 Powerstrokes towing power and capability.... yet this cummins would run circles around Mine towing haha. Crazy What power these trucks are putting down these days. Just crazy
inline 6 power, its such a great motor design.
I think all these manufactures have come a long way over the past 10 years. I just brought home a 22 F450 and Im not brand loyal at all but having worked at a Ford dealer for years and being friends with them it has it's perks plus I just like the looks of Ford, Im not a fan of the soft curves of the RAM. I haven't towed with the F450 yet but I was towing our 44ft 5h wheel with a 19 F350 SRW CC which did ok but we were on the hairy edge with payload etc. and we've added about 1500lbs to our rv so Im sure we were over weight by a bunch. The trailer kind of pushed the F350 around going down hills and coming to a stop and doubt it will with this F450. I know the 450 was built to tow with but wish it came with 410's and not the 430's because I doubt you'd notice much if any difference towing but the fuel mileage would be noticeable and wish there were more options for 19.5 tires, those are my only concerns and wishes. I like your towing comparison videos but wish they were all with a 5th wheel just for my selfish reasons lol. Just subbed, keep the videos coming!!
Follow I'll ALWAYS stay with the CUMMINS ENGINES! AND DEAL WITH TRANSMISSION ISSUES IF I HAVE ANY! AND YES I HAVE HAD THEM IN MY 1996 3/4 TON, really wasn't transmission it was lock up torque converter! I just went aftermarket and had one BUILT cheaper and better than Dodges
A few bits of feedback from a 2 ram 3500 owner with over 500k miles combined on them. Under no circumstances by one with a 68RFE if you are constantly towing moderate to heavy loads, unless you’re into transmission repairs every 60-100k mi. And secondly treat that after treatment system like a newborn baby with a handicap. Love the trucks but never again!
Unless you change fluid with 68rfe every 40k miles, you would not be replacing transmission.
What is an After Treatment System?
I have a 21 Ram and never heard that term.
@@jamesglenn520 DEF (diesel exhaust fluid).
@@ictpilot Yep I know exactly what that is and does.
Just never heard of it referred to as After Treatment before. Lol
Haha, so funny...watching you grinning ear to ear driving that truck. It's awesome for sure
It really is, when you can go 80 MPH and net feel 9500#’s behind you, that’s truly great engineering!
@@JB_WhoWork yes sir, sure is
Awesome truck… that’s definitely the one I’d have if I had a big trailer…. Thanks buddy…
Very helpful video as always. This is pretty much the truck I’m looking at and maybe in this color or the Hydro blue. It’s definitely going to be four-wheel-drive and probably the basic Cummins and I haven’t decided whether I’m going to be doing a 1 ton single or dual rear wheel. This is a gorgeous truck in this color.👍❤️
It really is, I felt like I found a hidden gem after doing this video. You don’t see Hydro Blue Dually but I love that almond green color as well 🔥🔥🔥. Thanks 👍🏾
Diesels pull great, no doubt. Just have deeeep pockets for repairs!! DPF, EGR, EGR COOLER, INJECTORS, HIGH PRESSURE FURL PUMPS.
And don't forget Turbos!!
@@daviddouglass7662 just do a proper delete and you good to go, mine 3500 at around 300000 miles and pulling strong, no major stuff to brake
When looking for a new HD truck, I drove the the Ford, GMC, Chevy and RAM. Ultimatley, my RAM had the better ride for me. Probably do to the coil springs which can be a determent if towing a lot.
You would think but the coils are fine especially if you stay around 1000#’s for hitch weight
GM hands down better ride quality on the 1 ton trucks
Keep up the good work
Go ahead and go by the 3500 Dooley diesel
Now that's a real work horse there..
You do a good job on all your videos you’re very thorough very professional👍✌🏻
Thanks Jon 👍🏾
Love your channel. Thanks for sharing
Great Review JB, thanks for your work!
It doesn’t but I’ll say it again. Just offer the wide track axle and a 4.30 as options for the 3500 to shut people up that want it 🤷♂️
lol
Buuuttt that higher number seems to make people think there better lol I seen somone put a f250 badge of his f150 so dumb would be cool but in the resale side it would be easier to know that it's a dually only and always has it instead of looking for options also the f450 and f350 have differences for more payload or towing I'm pretty sure
So glad to see finally being able to do a RAM 3500 Max Load config tow. Too bad we weren't closer you could have borrowed my Unicorn white Limited MegaCab Dually with Air. I just sold it BTW!
Nooooo!
@@JB_WhoWork I know. I already miss it.
Why did you sell?
@@JB_WhoWork talked about it more with my wife and instead of a 5th wheel were going to get a nice class C. So unfortunately won't need that big boy truck anymore and now was the perfect time to sell so it works out.
Sure was, now you just gotta wait on the market to cool down to get the Class C 👍🏾
Thanks for accommodating us Canadians eh. 😎

I suspect you needed slightly more gain on the trailer break because of how much that big boy weighs. It is nearly 9,000 unloaded.
I'm glad I went with a limited 3500
I just bought the Bighorn 3500, 2020 regular cab dually Cummins HO 6spd AISIN I cannot feel any sway when hauling my 3 horse slant trailer, it is like night and day having a dually I did notice the factory front tires do wear.. but to be expected. awesome truck..
You better start using diesel fuel additives. Cp4 on your ram is a problem
@@repairvehicle Talked to the Service Manager at my local RAM dealer and he said that the CP4 issues will be be covered under warranty if they grenade the fuel system. I do have the extended power train warranty on my 2019 3500 Dually. They did go back to the CP3 for 2021. As far as what FCA is going to do, they aren't going to do anything until the current lawsuit against Bosch is rectified. Based on all the research I've done there are two problems with the early CP4 pumps. First, the cam roller can suddenly turn sideways on the cam and fail which is why I think they updated the later CP4 to prevent this from happening. The other problem with them is they were designed for the European market where lubricity is not a problem like what we have with our winter blend fuel in the US. Until all this gets resolved I'm running a lubricity formula with every fill up to keep my pump well lubricated and crossing my fingers. My understanding both FORD and GM has the same issue using the CP4 in some of their trucks. I'm assuming they have also moved away from using them. I would install a CP3 conversion in my truck but I'm thinking if I do it myself FCA will void my warranty.
@@kerrywood8979, gm is using Japanese pump and Ford sticks with cp4, it keeps their mechanics in business
I talked to a dealer yesterday and they confirmed Allison trans are coming to the rams by end of year
We shall see!
That dealer lied to you....

Wonder if that guy ever got his ram Allison??..lol!!
Funny thing is GM doesn't even have an Allison...
Interesting enough. I did some work for a customer this week who tried to pull their 26,000# horse trailer with a 2019 dodge 4500 and it was a dog going up the steep SoCal mountain grades, struggling to maintain 40 mph on many of them. They bought a Ford 450 upon returning and now have no problem hitting 70 up those same grades...the wife said she never cried over purchasing a new vehicle as they paid $93,000 for the F450. I was surprised to hear such a difference between the dodge & Ford. They still have the dodge for everyday ranch work though.
That’s interesting, I wonder what rear axle ratio they had? The detuned Cummins isn’t a fair shake up but the 450 would put distance between the RAM either way because of that 4.30 and it having maximum power 👍🏾
A ram 4500 have a detuned cummins like JB said. 360 hp and 800 lb.tq .....A 3500 h.o 2021 with 420 hp and 1075 lb.tq would do way better.
@emmanuel auger the detuned Cummins would do fine as well as long as it has the 4.88 rear
@john Grisby good to know! I could only imagine if you had the 4.88 💪🏾
The Ram 4500 chassis cab motor is detuned for commercial use.
I have owned a few duallys. Then I got single wheel. Man I miss them dual rear wheels. I’ll always have a dually here on out. Won’t tow my fifth wheel with anything else.
Bout to get a 3500 high country soon just to look at it as my wife says 😂
Lol
Great review, thank you very much!
Great review- when I’m ready for an upgrade I will give your friends a call- 🍻
Thanks Ed 👍🏾
Love your videos, thank you
Thanks Robert 👍🏾
Awesome video. Only question i have is the truck max tow is 34k. Is that for fifthwheel, conventional, and gooseneck towing?
Thanks, that’s for fifth wheel/gooseneck
Now I can say. "Told you so!"
JB, thanks for another awesome video. I’m fixing to buy a 37’ boat that weighs about 19,000 lbs (including fuel) and would have to tow it through the Smoky Mountains. Would you recommend the Ram 3500 Dually and what upgrades would make sense?
Thanks, what kind of tongue weight does that size boat put on the truck?
@@JB_WhoWork I just asked Pursuit, the manufacturer, and the dude’s response was “this will depend on how you position the boat on the trailer. I think it should be about 10% of the boats weight, but don’t hold me to that, I would double check with the manufacturer of the trailer, I know I wasn’t much help with this one.” JB, that answer kind of surprised me. I figured that the manufacturer, who’s trying to sell a boat that cost a few hundred thousand dollars, could be a little more helpful than that ambiguous answer. Thoughts?
Well 10% would be 1900#’s and 12% would be 2280#’s so I would definitely choose a 1 ton truck to pull this rig. I would figure out what the gross weight is wet and do my calculations from their but it seems like a HO dually w/ a 3.73 or 4.10 rear would be fine. I’m assuming you don’t climb grades which is why I say 3.73 is fine 👍🏾
@@JB_WhoWork awesome! You rock!
Great video JB. Question- how do you like your Nitto Ridge Grapplers? Is there a lot of road noise? Do they drive nice? How are they holding up? Thanks for any info you can provide.
Thanks bro! I need to do a video on them, they have been great with a noticeable noise increase and a slight vibration increase.
I enjoy this Video Thanks

Also, F450 has a problematic cp4 pump that is known to fail and cost to repair is $10k.
19-20 Rams also have the CP4.
@@onecrzyrcn, yes and everyone who knows about it avoids buying those rams with cp4. But, cost of repair on ram is less than Ford. Dealers lots full of ram 19s and 20s

Go ahead and get the top-of-the-line do a 2002 and wanna do about it right there by the Dooley
What?
Go ahead and get you a bigger trailer
May need to borrow some cash from you 😉
Good video and that is an awesome truck. I’ve been telling you now for awhile that you need a dually. It’s almost like pulling those big trailers is what they are made for 😂.
But seriously what I tell people that ask me about my opinion is single wheel trucks, regardless of if they are 1/2, 3/4 or 1 ton are still just pickups. There’s no doubt the heavier trucks perform better than lighter trucks but at the end of the day you can stress them out and have issues towing. With a dually you about have to just do something stupid to have any kind of problem towing.
I all but think a dually is especially necessary if you are towing a fifth wheel or a gooseneck. The single wheels will do it but a dually is like a night and day difference. Also, the 450 carried more speed up the grade because it has 75 more hp. I don’t think the gearing has much to do with that.
🤣🤣🤣No Doubt! I find that a longbed SRW 3500 is fine as long as your tires are upgraded and you check them regularly. I wouldn’t exceed 16000#’s with a SRW truck if you plan on towing long distances due to the stress you’re putting on the tires.
In the end, a DRW is the best option for towing heavy, especially a big fifth wheel/gooseneck trailer
What’s up man was going by that 2021 Dooley or Larry want to go about it do it fully loaded by a duly man
Tires are 120 load rating. More useful on a tiny Toyota truck imitation. Go for 126 or better. GM and Ford do not have the exhaust brake. You get on a long steep grade and you will not have to worry with the Ram. With the other two you will not have to guess about the trailer brakes. They will be shot.
All you need to know is one is a Ram and the other is Fix Or Repair Daily.
Mannnnn, you're killing me I don't need a dually but every time I see one like that one I want one.
Lol, imagine if it had the night edition…

My husband and I are looking to buy a new 5th wheel (luxe toy hauler) I put in my order for a new 2022 Ram 3500 with all the upgrades that are available to enhance our payload and towing capacity. I need to know what those numbers will be estimated from the 2021. 2022 Ram 3500 Mega cab Limited dually with 6.7 Cummins HO turbo diesel, dual alternators rated at 440, 4.10 axle ratio dual rear heels with max tow package. I'm getting flack from the guys on the 5th wheel site saying my new Ram isn't enough to pull GVWR of 25,999 and hitch weight of 4,700 BTW I have non idea when I'll get the new truck
Hey Laurie I hate to be the bearer of bad news but your payload will probably be around 4600#’s because I did a video on a mega dually LTD and that cab does reduce the payload in comparison with the crew cab. Depending on how far along you are you could switch trim/cab configuration to stay within the payload but for a rig that big, you may want to consider a 4500… Hope this helps 🙏🏾

Ford is better in towing and every day driving. Most buy ram because they can get it for $10000 less than a Ford. I’ve owned both. Ford transmission and engine work like a charm. Everyone go drive both before buying. Ram interior is great but buying a truck for cosmetics won’t get you past a Ford towing or racing.
