  • Join me selecting baby Koi at the Shinoda Koi Farm! I’ll learn you the details and process of selecting Doitsu Kohaku and Doitsu Sanke baby koi that are around 5 weeks old.
    You can try by yourself my listing the numbers of Koi that you would have selected in the comments!
    It is early in the morning as we are preparing to start the selection of many, many baby Koi. We will be selecting two fry ponds that contain about 5000 5 to 5,5 week old baby koi. They will be selected for the second round. Together with Masanori Shinoda we have to drive for around 40 minutes, to reach the fry ponds.
    For Koi breeders is it very important that baby koi are selected early. The reasons for that are simple. The more baby koi live in a pond, the slower the growth process will take place. So higher stockings, means less growth. Also when there are more baby koi in a single pond, it means there is more waste. That means a decrease of water quality. Senbetsu or selection is helping breeders to keep stockings low, grow out only the baby koi that do have potential, and offer the best conditions. And in the end, why would a breeder invest in his lower quality Koi if he can already see these Koi have not the potential he is looking for?
    When selecting Doitsu Kohaku baby koi, it is important to know that actually the pattern is most important during the first and second selection rounds. This includes for example that the red pattern should lay in between the eyes. That around the head white is still visible, but the head should not be entirely white as well. A nice red dot on the head in between the eyes is preferred, also a white nose is preferred. Then for the pattern on the body itself it is preferred that some steps or at least a form of pattern is visible. The belly should be white, also the last section just before the tail should be white. This last part of the tail, when it is white, is called the odome. Preferable there is also no red visible on any of the fins.
    For Doitsu Sanke, the basis is the same as for Doitsu Kohaku. That is because a Sanke actually is a koi with a Kohaku pattern (red patterns) but then also including black markings. When you understand the Kohaku pattern, selecting sanke as baby koi is not that difficult at all. The only part is that you now also have to pay attention to the black spots. Preferable there is a nice pattern of black spots visible, not too small, not too large. That actually is the only thing that is paid attention to during selection of baby koi. It is too early to determine how the black spots will develop and fine-tune themselves.
    Sanke actually are very difficult Koi to select at a young age. Not really because it is harder to know what to look for compared with other varieties of koi. But simply because the number of selected sanke baby koi will be quite low. This is simply because both the red patterns (kohaku pattern) have to be nice, and also the black spots have to be well placed. That means double the complexity.
    At 09:05 you can try by yourself which baby Koi you would have selected. List the numbers you would have selected in the comments! Or ask me any questions about these Koi.

      Nice picks. Personally I like the Doitsu Kohaku (9) a lot. Honestly I'm not a big fan of number 8. It only has a really small red dot on it's back visible. It won't have any more red when it becomes larger, for that reason I would not pick it. What do you think of for example nr. 1, 2, 7?

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  4 роки тому +3

      I'm going with you for the number 9 as favourite, it's a nice Doitsu Kohaku for sure. Also the Tancho (2) looks nice currently and surely would be selected by a breeder as well, needs some time to develop to see what it going to happen with the pattern. What do you think of number 1 and 7? For number 8 it surely looks like an unique pattern/Koi. A breeder would most likely not select it though, it only shows one red small marking in the middle of it's body. For a Sanke a breeder would consider it as not enough 'pattern' (red) visible. It would be a nice unique Koi to grow out though and see what happens. Thanks for your reply and stay safe.

    • @stevenlane2641

      @@Aboutkoi 1 and 7 look nice, but don’t appear to have enough white, especially by the tail. I would happily grow 8 on to see how it turns out.

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  4 роки тому +1

      Agreed, they are not the best ones in the net. For the breeder worth the effort to grow them up for a couple months and reassess again. It are most likely sellable Koi.

  • @srikrishna7503

      Hi there, you have some nice picks for sure! Thanks for sharing. I have high hopes for number 9, a nice Doitsu Kohaku. My Doubts though for number 8 that you mention. Orange/Red won't develop on that Koi, so it is going to look very dark (the marking on the head is not a red dot). Let's hope for the best for this breeder!

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  4 роки тому +1

      @Joko Kurniawan, that is quite hard to tell at this point. At least it shows some indications that more white will be visible. When a Sanke grows the fish is stretched a little bit, and some part of the pattern won't 'stretch', meaning more white area's will become visible inbetween the patterns. If you look closely you can see some white in the tail area. And also in the middle section already some white can be seen. Time will tell. A breeder would select this Koi as well.

    • @129pico
      @129pico 4 роки тому +1

      @@jokokurniawan4060 1 is good but there isn't a tail stopper. Also there is not much white or breaks in the pattern...you can see some white so i guess at this stage the risk is worth taking...it was one of my selection originally.

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  4 роки тому +1

      Exactly, worth the risk & effort to grow it up for a couple of months and see what happens. Probably it is surely sellable for the breeder, which also counts.

      Number 2 and 9 are surely good choices. Number 2 seems to be a nice Doitsu Maruten Showa (round red marking on the head). Number 9 is a Doitsu Kohaku which seems to have a good body posture and a nice pattern. Number 8 I myself have my doubts, it will most likely have not enough red markings on the body. Only on the middle of the body is a red marking, the rest will be black and white. Not a preferred pick for me, but a nice experiment 👍

    All of the numbered fry are good choices, but I've chosen #8; not because it is the best sanke, but for its unique pattern.
    #7 would be my choice for best sanke as it appears to have well spaced smaller areas of sumi rather than larger areas like showa.

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  4 роки тому +2

      Hi there, thanks for your comment. Indeed most Koi do have a little bit of potential and could be kept to grow out larger. However, on some you can already spot that they won't become really good. If you look at number 3 for example, it doesn't have any red from the middle of the body until the tail. Most likely a breeder will not select that.
      Number 8 is indeed a special Koi. Personally I would not select it, when that Koi will grow the red marking will only be really small in the middle of its body. When koi grow up, the pattern grows a little bit more towards the back. So there will be more white visible beneath it. For that reason the red marking will start to look even smaller. Would be a nice experiment to grow it out to learn from. It's not the best Koi out of these 11 for sure though.

      Doitsu with a few scales will also stay, or even when they are almost fully scaled. If the Koi has scales, then it is just a normal 'Kohaku' instead of a 'Doitsu kohaku' or a normal 'Sanke' instead of a 'Doitsu Sanke' for example.
