Me I would pick 3 as my number 1 1 as my number 2 2 as my number 3 for the very good reasons you have said . Really impressed how you have explain all the good and bad points
I normally don't post comment in social media. But I have to this time. In fact, I watched your other videos too, such as how to select showa. After watching that video, I went to my favorite store last weekend and picked some really nice showas. Other more experienced customers in that store that day complimented me for my selections. Of course I picked someones they like too. :) About this video, first of all, I agreed with your favorite. My best favorite is the ippon hi, for its solid, bright and even color, and nearly perfect balance, without any noticeable drawbacks, clean nose, clean eyes, clean fins, etc. I really like it. Personally, I think appreciation of beauty is somewhat universal. I'm an art collector too. Though I'm new in Koi, only since last year, I feel I can pick up pretty quick on what's good and what's not. This video kinda confirmed my eyes. When you select the ippon hi in the first round, I already knew that fish is gonna make it to the end. I'm kinda happy to see my own ability in appreciation and selection got confirmed by the end result of this video. :) I have a small pond, and got some really nice fish in there (I think :D). This all happened since the second half of last year. In fact, I went to Japan in 2018. Back then, I didn't know anything about Koi yet. I really wish I can go to Japan soon again to visit some nice Koi farms, such as those in niigata area and the world famous Sakai farm in the south in possible. Kudos to you! Wish to see more of your videos.
Wow, what a comment and compliment is that. Thank you a lot! It is great to hear I helped you with the selection of some showa's. Hopefully they will develop as you expect from them, Showa is a great variety to grow and follow their developments. I can only agree the ippon hi kohaku is awesome. I'm still doubting why I didn't select that one as my number one 😉. I believe it has some good potential for the future, the skin quality is impressive. Very nice that you also have the experience with traveling to Japan. I assume you visited some Koi breeders as well? I'm sure it is worth the time and money to travel back again and visit some breeders (and of course select a great Koi to bring home). Thanks for your wonderful reply, have a great day and enjoy your hobby!
Ippon hi is the winner in my opinion. Perfect hi color saturation Presence of odome Hi pattern does not exceed lateral line The color placement on the head part also is vey ideal... In between the eyes. Blue eyes, white nose. For an underappreciated pattern, the textbook standards of kohaku in that final ippon hi are present and precise at the same time. Definitely going to be more than happy having it in my pond. 💞
Good pick! I have to agree with you the Ippon hi kohaku is going to look very strong when it will grow larger. Pattern placements are perfect and the red color looks very soft and bright.
Hi Steven, the single step is surely going to look impressive when it will grow larger. The skin quality on that one is so smooth, it almost looks like silk. Good koi with potential. Thanks for your comment!
Thank you so much for allowing me to understand what judges are looking for. We need more videos like this one that’s for sure. Thanks for posting this amazing video.
Thanks that is great to hear! The second one surely will develop nice as well. Would be nice to grow them all three up and compare them next year again
I personally like your videos. Please make more videos on how to select tosai. It is beneficial for us, a rookie hobbyist. Kindly post videos on how to select tosai sanke, showa, utsuri's, asagi and shusui. Thanks a lot! GOD BLESS!
I love Kohaku, however I am very fussy when it comes to choosing a Kohaku all for the same reasons you mentioned in this amazing video. I think I would settle for that Third Kohaku you showed at the end as your First One purely because of it's pattern posture and color.
Thank you for your reply and the compliment you gave. Very nice to read that. Do you mean the Ippon Hi kohaku? The Kohaku that only has one big marking? I have to agree that is a impressive Kohaku, it will be a very strong looking Kohaku when it becomes larger for sure.
Glad it was helpful, thank you for the compliment. Makes it even more enjoyable to make new videos! Number 2 surely is a nice choice for sure. There are many nice choices in 😊
Good to know! I have to agree on the Straight Hi kohaku, it has a really good skin quality and the pattern is exactly how it should be. When it grows large, it will become a nice Koi for sure.
Yes, surely that will be a nice experiment. I also think it will become quite nice. The red pattern looks really soft which means it is elastic and will easily follow the growth of the Koi without fading or getting weak spots. Thank you that's a great compliment! 👍
Great video, learnt a lot. I came across a tosai kohaku, it was a one step. But the separation from the red at the shoulder wasn’t obvious. It was like a fade from red to orange and into the white. How will this fade progress usually? Is is possible the fade will darken into red and be more distinct border with the white or will the fade remain? Would much appreciate your feedback! Thank you!
Hello, it could be that this step is going to break open. But when I understand your explanation correctly I believe it might also be a bit weaker red. So it might be that it never fades away completely.
Nice video. These were born in 2019? They look small for tosai. I think your favorite is nice. But mine is the one with kuchi beni at 5:15. I don't think the red tail is as big of a deal breaker as it really is. I think other characteristics of that koi kind of overcome that. Once the sashi and kiwa tighten that pattern is going to be striking on a large koi.
Yes these are late 2019. They are quite small indeed for their age. Could have been 25-35 cm if heated all winter long. The kuchi beni one is quite nice, red is very soft and looks stretchable. I have to agree with you when the sashi/kiwa is going to tighten and the white is becoming more prominent inbetween the red patterns - then surely it will become a nice Koi.
The one with the big red patch indeed looks nice. You mean the one with the Ippon Hi (pattern consisting of only one big red step), right? I believe it will get a strong body posture, plus the pattern will only make the posture looking stronger 👍
Ippon Hi & red lips (kuchi beni) can be quite nice indeed! Personally I find straight Hi patterns quite interesting when the intensity of the red patterns is high, usually it makes the body look larger as well. 😀
Yes, it does a little bit. Some red can disappear and usually the red patterns become a little bit smaller in contrast to the Koi (so more white visible). But overall the red patterns remain the same.
Me I would pick 3 as my number 1 1 as my number 2 2 as my number 3 for the very good reasons you have said . Really impressed how you have explain all the good and bad points
Nice order! Thanks for comment. Glad you liked the video!

My favourite kohaku was definitely the straight hi that you selected for the top 3. Absolutely beautiful!!!
The straight Hi / Ippon Hi Kohaku is indeed quite nice. Has a nice strong body structure, bright future 👌. Thanks for your comment!
Loved this. Really great for learning the nuances of selecting potentially great fish.
Ippon hi is the winner in my opinion.
Perfect hi color saturation
Presence of odome
Hi pattern does not exceed lateral line
The color placement on the head part also is vey ideal... In between the eyes.
Blue eyes, white nose.

very nice Kohaku, good selection advice
Thank you, hopefully I gave you some new insights as well!
I really enjoy your selection videos - explaining your eye to us.
Glad to hear you are enjoying! Thank you for your comment.
BEST KOI CHANNEL !!! ___I PREFERRED THE SECOND ONE(ONLY BECAUSE I HAVE ONE SIMULAR)
Nice pick! I like your choice as well. And thank you for the compliment!
Another fascinating video, I preferred the single step fish in the bowl. A nice 2 step would have been better. Thanks for posting.

@@Aboutkoi thank you so much. Looking forward to watching them all. 🎉👍🎊
Great!!
Totally agree with your selection. Learning as I go, another great video!
Good to hear you had the same pics! Thanks for your compliment
Really good picks and I learnt a lot! Thank you and keep it up :) my favourite is the second on of the last 3
Thanks that is great to hear! The second one surely will develop nice as well. Would be nice to grow them all three up and compare them next year again
very helpful content.. we have detail information on how to decide to choose kohaku.. 👍🔥
Regards from Bali
Glad to hear I was able to help you! Kohaku is a great variety, good luck on selecting your own Kohaku! Thanks for your comment 😉👍

@@Aboutkoi My pleasure Sir.
Yes that Kohaku there, it is an absolute beauty.
Very nice choice, good taste there 😉
@@Aboutkoi Thank you Sir.
You are welcome!
Very informative video thankyou...I would have selected number 2 in the bowl
Glad it was helpful, thank you for the compliment. Makes it even more enjoyable to make new videos! Number 2 surely is a nice choice for sure. There are many nice choices in 😊
Spot on with your picks :)
Thanks! Which of the last three is your favorite?
@@Aboutkoi We chose the same favorite, but I think that the Straight Hi will develop into the most impressive of the three.
Good to know! I have to agree on the Straight Hi kohaku, it has a really good skin quality and the pattern is exactly how it should be. When it grows large, it will become a nice Koi for sure.
Great video once again learnt lots 👍
Happy to hear this! Do you have a favorite out of the three last ones?
@@Aboutkoi probably the first one
@@Aboutkoi can I ask your views on Doitsu Kohaku?
@@markbrady7462 I prefer wagoi (scaled) over Doitsu Kohaku. I'll try and make a video on Doitsu Kohaku later!
@@Aboutkoi That would be really good. Looking at purchasing a Kohaku as I do not have any?
thanks for this video!
My pleasure! Hope it was helpful for you
I can easily exchange one of your top 3 with the one in 5:35. But ofcourse, its just my own observation. Thanks.
Yes that Kohaku is not that bad at all as I mentioned! Just not in top 3, missing some key elements like the Odome. But surely not a bad pick at all 👍
@@Aboutkoi yes I agree, its jist that I want to see it grow more and see what its ganna be. Btw Iam a big fun of your videos.😊

very informative!
Thank you, glad it was informative!
So nice kohako selecting to transfer modpond
Thanks for watching!
you should do a home-breeding video and pond setup for breeding for this season?
I will try to do some more videos on breeding and selecting later this year 😊
I really liked one of the ones you didnt select!
There are some other nice ones in indeed! But somewhere you have to look at the basic criteria and make a decision based on that
Nice video. These were born in 2019? They look small for tosai.

@@Aboutkoi Hey, really enjoy your videos. I learn a lot from them. Keep them coming!
Glad you like them! More video's will surely follow. Thanks for your comment.
I always feel bad for all the ones you discard, lol. I love the one where it is one big red patch. It's very majestic to me.
The one with the big red patch indeed looks nice. You mean the one with the Ippon Hi (pattern consisting of only one big red step), right? I believe it will get a strong body posture, plus the pattern will only make the posture looking stronger 👍
Plis kohaku selection part 2 from another farm .. kohaku is fascinating koi.. but just pick 20 from grade low middle to show quality ..
Great idea! I am surely going to make more Kohaku selection video's later. Thank you for your suggestion and comment!
i like the one you choosed also
Nice, then we agree 😀
Nice
Thanks 👍
I choose the 1st one ..like the orange symetrice color
The Ippon Hi Kohaku, nice choice. It will probably look very imposant when it is large!
i don't mind Ipon hi pattern on kohaku-usually the red is thick like its painted on-good quality.
Ippon Hi & red lips (kuchi beni) can be quite nice indeed! Personally I find straight Hi patterns quite interesting when the intensity of the red patterns is high, usually it makes the body look larger as well. 😀
Zeker weten de ipon hi! Love the ipon hi. Just strong. Let it grow to 80cm
Surely have to grow it up to 80cm+, will be impressive! 😉
😳 wow
Some nice Kohaku in there?
I like two step with white in the middle
Unfortunately, the group is not top grade, not much to pick. Good info and selection.
It's surely not top grade, just average quality you can find as 'tosai' or in tosai mixes in stores. Thanks 😊
Would the koi breeders sell the koi that don’t make the cut to people as feeder fish for predator ponds
It depends on the breeder. Some breeders do sell these type of KOi, others discard them completely.
Hey sir, what do i feed 3inch koi to be colorful that size?
You can already start feeding them pellet food. Make sure to use a pellet based on fish meal
Isn't the tail part (Odome) is pronounce O-Doh-Meh not O-dome.
O-Doh-Meh is the right pronouncement indeed! Thanks for your comment
Does the pattern change as the fish grows?
Yes, it does a little bit. Some red can disappear and usually the red patterns become a little bit smaller in contrast to the Koi (so more white visible). But overall the red patterns remain the same.
I will selected them all if you allow me to do .
Of course you can, it are all quite nice Kohaku!
What do you do with the unselected Kohaku?
This was just for explanation. So they are put back in the same pond
I would pick them all lol
Haha, yes they are all quite ok to have in your pond!
@@Aboutkoi absolutely!!! As long as they're healthy which they look amazing.. and they are pretty in my eyes, they're perfect!!
The ipon is my favorite
The Ippon Hi kohaku seriously is a great pick! Will surely be impressive when it grows larger.
Mine is the one step kohaku
Good choice! I also like one step patterns on kohaku. Makers them look imposant!
The ones that don’t pass the test for how much do they sale?
This type of Koi will probably be like 25-75 dollar
i liked the fish with red lips...got to be female haha
Must be female indeed 😂. Quite a nice Koi!
How much price
Hi there, too bad we don't sell Koi. We are here to share information with you 😃
