A brief visit from a red and extremely elongated interstellar asteroid
    www.nature.com...
“Here we report observations and subsequent analysis of 1I/2017 U1 (‘Oumuamua) that demonstrate the extrasolar trajectory of ‘Oumuamua. Our observations reveal the object to be asteroidal, with no hint of cometary activity despite an approach within 0.25 au of the Sun.”
The First Interstellar Object to Be Seen May Have Just Visited Our Solar System
    www.seeker.com...
“Astronomers may have spotted the first comet or asteroid to visit from beyond the solar system. They’re now scurrying to aim telescopes at the object, provisionally called A/2017 U1, to learn more about its mysterious origins.”
Massive Asteroid ‘Florence' Flies Past Earth at Record-Breaking Nearness
    www.seeker.com...
“A mountain-size space rock cruised past Earth this morning (Sept. 1) in a record-breaking encounter that has long had scientists drooling. At 8:06 a.m. EDT (1206 GMT) today, the roughly 2.7-mile-wide (4.4 kilometers) asteroid 3122 Florence came within a mere 4.4 million miles (7 million km) of Earth - just 18 times the distance from our planet to the moon.”

John Doe If an alien civilization had reached the technological point where they could actually intercept our "package", they would have the capability to come land on our planet. You have to keep in mind that our message hasn't gone very far on an astronomical scale. And it'd be extremely odd for them to think that we would interpret them sending a rock through our solar system as a response to our message. I know it's just a fun thought, but just not plausible.

Did you know that our limited technology CAN NOT differentiate between an asteroid and an alien craft that could have any number of technological disparities from human crafts?
In other words, if you're familiar with the Mass Effect series, the collectors ship was embedded within rock and debris...
Meaning we still don't really know what it could hold.
    Just food for thought.

AJ Alvarez no, it was moving too fast. I forget how many km/second, but even our fastest probes couldnt catch it. What slightly worries me, if astronomers are relying on reflected light to identify these objects, what if any notice would we have if a nearly non reflective object was heading towards us? Now I wanna write a fanfic...
He store emptily out the opaque window of the cigar-shaped ship, monitors beeping around him as he watched thousands of stars zoom by, able to see for not even a second before they were behind them. His own reflection he could see on the window, along with red, green and white pale lights from behind him. A lot of numbers, morse and symbols, most of which he didn't even remember what they did because the ship did it itself also reflected on the opaque window.
"Alec?" A younger sounding voice echoed from the halls behind him, and as the lengthiness of the _Alec?_ faded away, he tilted his gaze to the window to see the reflection of her. Tammy, his younger starbound. "You look like one of those cliche people who start a movie."
Alec chuckled, returning his gaze to the window. For a second too long, all there was in the bridge was the constant sound of the beep letting them know the ship was working correctly. "I read too many books." Alec said.
"That's quite obvious." Tammy said, as he could hear her footsteps come closer to him. Alec twisted his head around to her quickly, his body still facing the mirror.
    "What'd you come up for?"
"I was bored." Tammy said, her voice ringing hinted with nonchalantness, tiredness, and sarcasm.
Alec turned fully to her, sighing. "We're on a ship heading to who-knows-where, yet you're bored?"
    Tammy merely nods.
"Go check the monitors again, the pills, all of that."
"Uh, we've checked them, like, a thousand times." Tammy said, and she leans against her back leg. "A thousand times in the last hour."
Alec scoffs. "Check them a thousand more in that case."
"You're no fun, Alec." Tammy pouts.
    "Thanks for the compliment."
Tammy crosses her arms, as his eyes dart to a screen with their whereabouts on it.
"Oh, shit." Alec said, jumping off the levitated surface by the frame of the window.
Tammy's eyes glaze over, a habit Alec had picked up on when she's curious about something, as she uncrossed her arms while he runs to the same monitor that his eyes had darted to.
"Something wrong?" Tammy asks, quietly walking up behind him.
"We're running by Neptune in their solar system." Alec says, panicking.
"Fucksticks." Tammy says, jumping beside him to get a clear view of the monitor. "Like, the _human_ Neptune?"
"Pay attention in the Academy, won't you?" Alec hisses, frantically typing on the keys with morse on them.
Tammy rolls her eyes, but nods and turns to the monitor besides the one Alec was working on. "What should we do?"
    "Turn off the engines."
    "Say what now?"
"Turn. Them. Off, or else I'll turn you in to the humans myself."
Tammy hisses at him, and starts typing on the keyboard, while Alec hurriedly taps away on the whereabouts screen. "I'll lock up the sirens and doors, while you get the commands. Remember not to kill the-"
"Life mode, and turn on drift, yeah I get it." Tammy says.
Alec nods and turns away, typing four last digits on the monitor before dashing off into the hallway.
He runs into the second room on his left, a metal door which had opened to his body weight and quick facial passcode, and sprints to the largest monitor in the dark room. The room had a large floor-to-ceiling window with monitors in the walls to both sides of him.
Alec taps a few digits into the monitor and runs back to the bridge, his speed coming in useful.
    "Turned everything off?"
"Yep, we're passing by Saturn now, gravity will be killed in a second or two, so will temperature and radiation. Drift is coming on now," Tammy says, diving to the ground.
    "Get ready for it..."
Alec dives to the ground beside her, just in time as the ship suddenly lurches upward, then downward. His metallic arm sticks to the floor, which avoids him from floating up in the air. Tammy latches herself to the floor using a dagger in her boot. The ship shakes again, then lurches to the side.
Alec hisses under his breath, "Damn space winds..."
This continues for a small amount of time, before the ship evens itself out, using a mechanic to keep the bridge steady, yet keep the exterior of the ship spinning.
Tammy opens her mouth to speak, but shuts it quickly.
Alec shuts his eyes, pressing a finger to his temple, putting himself into a 48 hour sleep without thinking twice.

What truly baffles me is how folks believe there's a higher probability for it being an alien rather than a regular asteroid. There are so many billions upon billions upon billions (and so forth) of asteroids in the universe. And we haven't even discovered alien microorganisms yet. The chance of discovering intelligent life or anything made by it (other than ourselves) is so minimal that it can't really be comprehended.

If any of our outward bound probes ventured near an alien civilization, there would be no 'sudden deviation' of its course. I agree that this asteroid is almost certainly a natural phenomena. But to use 'no sudden deviation of its course' to disqualify it as alien seems short-sighted.

It would be interesting if we eventually managed to find out that it was an object intentionally sent on a targeted path that used our sun to either change it's direction or give it a boost so that it could eventually impact on a specific target. All of this would require a super intelligent extra terrestrial species with the capabilities to re-direct an object of that size and a reason to actually do it, of course.

    And this is interesting:
The name comes from Hawaiian ʻoumuamua, meaning "scout",[16] (from ʻou, meaning "reach out for", and mua, reduplicated for emphasis, meaning "first, in advance of"[3]) and reflects the way this object is like a scout or messenger sent from the distant past to reach out to us.[3][17] The first character is a Hawaiian ʻokina, not an apostrophe, and is represented by a single quotation mark and pronounced as a glottal stop; the name was chosen by the Pan-STARRS team[18] in consultation with Kaʻiu Kimura and Larry Kimura of the University of Hawaii at Hilo.[19]

Military 'scouts' are often sent ahead of invading forces...

Christian Medina The number you mention looks a lot like the Hubble constant (which is probably somewhat higher), 73,2 kilometer per second per megaparsec measured a couple years ago I think. That means for every megaparsec the universe expands by that much, but the universe is bigger than one megaparsec and expands faster than the speed of light in total.

What is really terrifying about this event is that astronomers have no capacity to detect objects like this one and if i am not mistaken, the woman said, they only had the opportunity to observe it the moment it was very near/fying away from the sun.
Ofcourse, when an object is too far from a star, not to mention its size, it cannot be seen even by a very sophisticated telescope.
Now, what if an asteroid like this is heading towards earth?
Can we do something or although we have the technology, will we be like the dinosaurs?
Collision among heavenly bodies occurs astronomically rare; ofcourse, there are, i think, 90% or so empty space in the universe. Nonetheless, still, it could happen.
