    • @tristandedrie8436
      @tristandedrie8436 7 років тому +15

      What this video fails to mention is that those mammoths would actually be kept in a wild-life reserve in Siberia called "Pleistocene Park". They would not just be set out in a random forest. Besides, from what i have read on the subject, they are actually planning to release the modern day equivalents of Pleistocene carnivores in the area too, which should ensure some kind of balance.

    • @tristandedrie8436
      @tristandedrie8436 7 років тому +6

      Judars_envy, the problem is that they are going to keep those mammoths in Siberia, Russia, their former habitat. And believe it or not, in Siberia there is actually a huge problem with ivory hunters who sell the mammoth ivory that they recover from the permafrost. The good thing however is that the park they're planning to keep those mammoths in, is actually monitored, so that would reduce the hunt for ivory against living mammophants.

    • @radrook4481

Just to let you know, we humans are powerful, dare I say, if dinos lived among us, they wouldn't go near the cities that often if they did we would nuke the sh*t out of them. actually introducing large herbivores to the tudnra had a positive effect in some places - the soil got better, snow was crashed and the ground got colder, so release of methane in the permafrost slowed down, grass was able to grow instead of moss, etc. The mammoth steppe can be a much better biome by nearly every means than a low producing tundra. And we know that around 12000 years ago it was the single largest biome on the planet, and worked really well. So I say go for it, we need the mammoths back.

      @saltservice4024 5 років тому +4

      @@queenspalace9582 I understand your point, indeed it wont be done from the kindness of anybodies heart, it's not how it works. But, are you suggesting that there wouldn't be any scientific purpose to putting them out into a specifically assigned natural habitat, to be able to intermingle again with the rest of the natural world around it?
      What happens if they breed it, then would they consider a breeding programme or killing them off when there are too many.
      The thing I'm alluding too is the snowball effect of doing this all research about mammoths for decades and having enough materials to make a mammoth, will it just spiral to a point where some team of people will eventually do it anyway just to watch and see, or for emotional purposes?
      In a way the counter-argument to what I'm saying is similar to what the video says at 6:25 on-wards about if it's really the right thing to do. Two forces are at role here, Humanity's will and Natures will.
      Personally though, I'm just not sure if it's the right thing to do. How mammoths became extinct could be entirely circumstantial, for a hypothetical example - ""10,000 years ago they could of died out to a small number from natural causes *and then* humans killed them because humans were too, on the brink of extinction and hunted these creatures to survive"" - then would we say "humans caused their extinction and thus need to replace them" or "Humans were playing an expected and predictable role in the ecosystem, thus it was only natural for mammoths to become extinct." - "Humans hunted these creatures but could not of been substantial enough to cause the final blow"
      OR another hypothetical example to contrast the first one - ""10,000 years ago they became immediately extinct because of natural disasters and changing climates"" - Then it'd be that section from 6:25 - "is it right for nature?" or "is it right to do now, is it too late?"
      - Until there is enough evidence to say exactly how the entire population of mammoths became extinct then it's pretty hard to say whether Humans should play a role in using science to bring these creatures back into the ecosystem. If there is even evidence left to prove it. Instead it's far more easier to record what is alive now, stop and replace the things we've brought to extinction, knowing full well we were responsible for something and that it wont screw up the ecosystem and even possibly the biosphere of bacterial life.

      mydyingparadiselost, that's actually what these scientist are doing in the first place. However, whenever someone mentions a mammoth, all attention is focused on that. The techniques presented in this video is, in the first place, being used to help modern day animals who are on the brink of extinction. Btw: What the video also fails to mention is that this research, in particular by "Restore&Revive" wasn't actually meant to be used in the de-extinction of the mammoth, but rather in possible genetical modification of the asian elephant, to make it more adepted to colder climates and as such, giving it more chance to survive . The media however popularised the concept and called it "the resurection of the mammoth", which i can understand, given the fact that they indeed try to give the asian elephant thick hair and fat.

    It would be better to work on keeping threatened species from becoming extinct. Such as rhinoceroses, whooping cranes, a whole range of animals and plants. If the ecosystems that mammoths lived in are gone, it might not be possible to find a territory where they could survive. The end of the ice age made the solid land that they could walk on previously soft, and they sunk into mud and could not get out. Now the warming of the atmosphere might reduce the amount of land they could live on.

  • @jackleo4435
    @jackleo4435 7 років тому +46

    But the role the wooly mammoth played in the ecosystem hasn't been filled....
    Many forests and grasslands of Siberia and north America have not been the same. People have to bulldoze forest lands and grass to let others grow. Theirs a park in Siberia made for that. It has bison, elk, moose, horse. And it's waiting for the mammoth. Then their they can release it and see what kind of impact it does.

It would take a long time to teach them how to survive without other members of ots species to teach it. Look up this problem in newzealand with a bird species that was saved from extinction but no longer behaves like its ancestors but rather another bird species that scientists introduced them to.

      I believe the general rule of thumb for humans is 50 human males and 50 human females, so I can only assume you would need a minimum of the same amount to have a population of passenger pigeons with enough genetic variation.

    • @evilotto9200

      It's not just cloning, but also selective gene editing that makes de-extinction plausible. So options may be to artificially introduce signifigant genetic variation to a population, or to remove perceived detrimental recessives.

      Yes 100 is enough if you selecting the mates. And from there you might be able to breed the birds until you have enough to release the into the wild. Maybe. But that is still finding 100 useful DNA samples of passenger pigeons.

    De-Extinction is good if we choose right one for us . For example elephant bird . If we recreate them then we don't need to kill 50 chicken for its meat , but we need only to kill "one" elephant bird to produce that much meat . I mean meat industry is huge . We need to reintroduce certain extinct species for our huge meat demands

    • @Sara3346
      @Sara3346 7 років тому +2

      Sorry to burst your bubble but elephant birds would likey reproduce far more slowly than a chicken and thus not really be tenable for farming in a comparable manner.

    • @derPlastikarm
      @derPlastikarm 6 років тому

      The thing is tho, that we are allready producing to much meat, because the overall consumption of meat is actually decreasing. We throw tons and tons of meat away every year. So why do we need even more of it? And yes we do need more meat in the third world countries to help them with their hunger, but that can be fixed by redistribution.

    Although it's traditionally thought that passenger pigeons died because we killed them directly with hunting, is is unlikely this is the sole cause.
    Based on genetic analysis it seems that the minimum genetically self-sustaining population of passenger pigeons (which once numbered in the billions) was only about 330,000.
    www.theguardian.com/science/grrlscientist/2014/jun/16/passenger-pigeon-extinction-population-fluctuations-human-exploitation
    Environmental changes wrought by European settlers possibly coupled with the chestnut blight (American chestnuts were a big food source for passenger pigeons) may have produced a huge population boom followed by a massive die-off. That is the billions of passenger pigeons darkening the skies may not have been the norm, but a population explosion produced when Europeans turned virgin, unbroken forests into patchwork forests.
    Then when the population crashed from billions to a more normal amount (let's say millions), but people kept hunting them as though billions was the norm, it was the last nail in the coffin. That's one theory that's circulating anyhow.
    Another theory is that passenger pigeon flocks had to be huge or they'd go extinct. That is they weren't hunted to extinction, but the flock sizes were reduced to what most people would consider quite sustainable numbers, but which unfortunately weren't.
