In pictures the bike really does look beautiful but seeing it with my own 2 eyes it really is drop dead gorgeous! Even if you're not into that retro style it still really is something to behold for a 125. Getting it very soon.
I liked your honesty at the end Bob. I bought a YZF R125 as my learner, it was a 2009 albeit that was 5 years ago. I paid £1500 for it, £40 for a service, had it for 6 months, passed my test and sold it for £1500. Learners buying new 125's is a financially bad idea unless money is no object. A 125 does, I agree make a great city hopper.
Yeah that's still the most sensible thing to do if you're stepping up quickly. This is more of a long term purchase that I felt delivers in terms of quality, it just depends on the individual's circumstances
Very lucky to get one of those for that price usually find the previous owner has made it un savable before it's worth that little. I thought even a 2009 now would be worth £2500-2800

I’m still hoping for the day Yamaha will release the XSR 300, there’s some rumors and leaks since 2016! Let’s see if they release it later this year or next year! 🤞🏽

Id rather own this bike for a year or two and then resell it for 3000, rather than drive a chinese bike and not be able to sell it at all. On the other hand 120mpgs, yamaha reliability and hella good looks make for a convincing arguments to keep it as a commuter forever.
Looks like a great little bike, but.... those jubilee clips on the cooling hoses! I would absolutely have to reposition them to make them look neater. I know, I know, but with my bike building head on I'd just scream inside every time I saw them.
Well, it's good looking, got good performance, it's well built and it's got good residuals.... But, when I had a 125 my priorities were, (1) cheap enough to afford (2) something I could repeatedly crash without it costing much... And something to quickly pass my test on to quickly move up to a big bike. It makes sense if you have the money and are definitely going to keep and look after it. But it's a lot of money for a 'learner'... My 125 in 91 cost me £150.....
This isn't a bike for new learners. This is for us Gen Xers with midlife crisis and too little time to go for a full A1 license. There's several countries where you can ride 125cc if you're an experienced car license holder (Spain, Italy) or with a short course with no test on top of your car license (Germany, Austria). Here in Austria, the short course is 1 day and costs around €200,-. The full A1 course would take weeks and cost around €1000,- or so if you pass the test on the first try. Plus, they're all booked out until next spring due to the pandemic.
Given that it's considerably better quality than the Chinese junk, you'll spend more time riding on a better bike and less time getting it fixed and sourcing parts. Then when it comes to sell you'll lose less than you would on Chinese and you'll be putting a quality bike on to the used market. If you can afford it, do it. Too many broke people saying not to buy these new 125s because they can't afford one themselves
Just bought the legacy edition. Did consider the cheaper chinese bikes as have had them before but they rust so badly and it doesn't take long for it to start either. Don't expect to buy another bike for a lot of years so it had to be quality. The black and gold JPS style of the legacy looks so good as well.

I believe that this XSR 125 is better than all of the cheaper bikes... I also believe the resale will drop like a stone because this price will not hold at all when you have a used 300cc or better selling for 3-4k. I do not see the value, I would be very interested at about 3k

@@motobob oh.. Hyosung does not manufacture motorcycles anymore. KR Motorcycles emerged as a legacy brand after Hyosung separated from Suzuki in the late 90's, but they failed miserably. Almost all Korean motorcyle parts suppliers vanished after Daelim and Hyosung separated from Honda and Suzuki, and it was like 20 years ago. And Korea has changed so much during those 20 years. I mean, it wouldn't make any managerial sense to manufacture a entry class motorcycles which sell for less than 6,000 dollors in a country where GDP per capita exceeds USD 30,000 when you can simply do the same in Vietnam or China for a fraction of the costs.

One question Bob, is 15bhp a legal requirement now for 125cc bikes as I’m sure the little Suzuki GP125 that I had as a ride to work bike back in the 70’s made over 20bhp.
Afraid so - "The A1 allows you to ride up to a 125cc bike with engine power not exceeding 11kw (~15hp) and a maximum power to weight ratio of 0.1kw per kg"
Before 82/83 if I remember correctly there was no limit on 125s after 82/83 it was 12bhp to be learner legal. The unrestricted RD125LC was 21bhp which did come in 12bhp form. The Suzuki GP125 only came learner legal. You may have your wires crossed with the GT125/185 from the 70s tho.
@@derekcable these de restricted 2 strokes were the reason the laws changed. Same with the 250 my dad was learning on. OK when it was a 4 stroke cb250. But not when yamaha did a rd250 LC that went over 100mph.

£4500!? That's RC390 money. And where I'm from, there's the XSR155 which costs the equivalent of £2370. Costing double that for having no assist and slipper clutch, 30 less cubes and 5 less hp is ridiculous.
The only good things about this bike are the ABS, LED's and the supposed 75mph top speed. (is that really achievable?). It's not worth the money even with those features. If you're a learner and you want a 125 then buy second hand and save your money for the big bike you want when you pass.

we have xsr 155 here in the Philippines
Bro I am from India. Why Yamaha don't lonch xsr series in india
How much the cost of usa dollars?
So, where is it made? You mentioned that it's not made in China - which is good - but where is it made? Did I miss that info?
Actually it's made in France and the motor is made in Italy Yamaha-Minarelli.
@@cambrabrownr the motor isn't a minarelli. It's the same motor as the mt and r125. Loo
4.5 large for that is insane, but people love getting in debt to be seen on modern plastic crap.buy something older and better built and save money, when you finish ed with it,sell it and get the money back,as long as you ain't buggered it up trying to make a cafe racer!
You absolutely right !
Meanwhile the honda forza 125 and xmax 125 are £5000 I'd rather take this and save £500 lol
What about the mutt mastiff?
Great review!
Instead buy royal enfield bikes or ktm 125, ktm 390.
1000th lliker ;) good review man! +1Sub aswel! 💯
At around £3500 id consider it otherwise not. Gonna go for a Bullit or similar...
Bullit is garbage. You'll spend most of the time off road because the parts are hard to come by.
What bike is that after the sinnis at 1:32?
Korea? Even Korean brands gave up on local manufacturing because of the cost constraints a long ago. Lol
I was thinking of Hyosung
@@motobob oh.. Hyosung does not manufacture motorcycles anymore. KR Motorcycles emerged as a legacy brand after Hyosung separated from Suzuki in the late 90's, but they failed miserably. KR has some, but no 'significant' motorcycle manufacturing facilities in Korea; rather, they only maintain sales and essential service facilities to market and maintain Chinese motorcycles, either as OEM or SKD.
@@instant_karma6831 thanks for all the info - much appreciated
Very expensive it is .... From India 🇮🇳
bob i would say that it is a bet expencive but looks like a jim
Nice review 👍 iv been looking at getting the xsr155 in Thailand I'm 6ft 80ish kgs think this has helped thanks
I can get a new Honda CRF 250F for around the same price and it is so much more bike even if it is just for dirt
Is motor is way more modern
Why the not launching in India Yamaha xsr155 bike and Indian customer waiting for this bike and Yamaha company bad decision not launching in Indian Yamaha xsr155 bike
Plz Yamaha lounch it in Pakistan plz
Man, this bike is a work of art. Now, how do I get extra 4-5k to splash on it :-|
Confirm India launch date
When will lanch in india
Not for india
Queria tanto...
XSR 350 anyone.... with same grunt as the old rd/rz 350
nice looking bike, but too much for a 125...
Bet they still sell a fair few. On finance people Don't care what the price is.
It's not that much. The honda forza 125 is £500 more expensive lol
@@JDMz no thank you... i'll have something cheaper, £4,500 for a 125cc? there are other practical options out there.
Im in New Zealand
Was looking forward to purchasing another yamaha
But the money mongers have cranked the new release up over $7000. Absolutely ridiculous, so it looks like i will have to fly the 2000km return trip to Dunedin from Auckland on an intercity Bus!!😢
@@motobob many thanks Bob.
@@derekcable these de restricted 2 strokes were the reason the laws changed. Same with the 250 my dad was learning on. OK when it was a 4 stroke cb250. But not when yamaha did a rd250 LC that went over 100mph.
@@chrishart8548 My 1st bike was a new Yellow RD250 air-cooled in 79 on L plates,a friend bought a pre-registered RD125 twin which got round the restriction learner law.
India launch date
I'm sure it's a great bike to ride, definitely looks the part. But that price though. Ouch! Cheers.
Seems like the going rate for a good 125 now. Couple more years and they will be £5k... when the honda crf250L came out it was £3,997 2013 maybe?
All these small cc bikes are expensive in the UK compared to Australia canada etc. But then 125cc is more fun around uk towns also.
@@aminjan56 not just the small cc bikes a kawasaki ninja 650 performance is now £8200 that's a parallel twin with normal way up forks and 68hp.
When u think about Vespa 125 is much more expensive, it feels cheap xD
I'm 5'7 - would this be too big for me or just right?
£4500!? That's RC390 money.
And where I'm from, there's the XSR155 which costs the equivalent of £2370. Costing double that for having no assist and slipper clutch, 30 less cubes and 5 less hp is ridiculous.
250 must be perfect
4.5k Yamaha must be dreaming
They've already sold 33,000 plus units already.
@@JDMz I can believe that, people with more money than sense
It still is worth 4.5K
The only good things about this bike are the ABS, LED's and the supposed 75mph top speed. (is that really achievable?). It's not worth the money even with those features. If you're a learner and you want a 125 then buy second hand and save your money for the big bike you want when you pass.
Not many want to pass though. They like the cheap motoring a 125 gives. Hence why most use them as for work because they hardly use any fuel.
I would rather buy a Svartpilen 125
that's worth it when people are making loads of money... i don't think they are right now :-(
Probably only £65 a month on a pcp. Probably pay for that on the dole
