- These common baby toys provide no developmental benefits and may even lead to developmental delays when over-used.
Despite being found in many homes, and often being promoted as developmentally beneficial, these toys don't actually help your little one in any way. Often because they limit movement and hold your baby in a single position for extended periods of time they can potentially lead to developmental delays.
Some of these toys even hold our babies in positions that are know to increase the risk of them developing hip dysplasia and other developmental conditions.
In addition to that, there have been cases where babies have been injured when using these toys. Some even suffering serious injuries like skull fractures.

Emma, thank you for this video, however I fear I have already caused some problems with a jumperoo. Like you have said, my daughter now won't stand upright, she bends forward at the hips, locks her knees and also stands on her tiptoes. She's still very young (7.5mos), but very strong, and I want to try to undo the damage I have caused. What would you suggest I do?
Honestly such an underrated video and it pains me to see newborns put in walkers especially, because it can cause tortillas. My MIL does this with her twins which are only 2 weeks old and I've told her this but she doesn't listen
@@katieloveridge5882 I highly suggest holding their hands and having them jump up and down on your lap, it will strengthen the leg muscles and knees and help them get back to a healthy hip position

I see soooo many people buying soooooo many toys and things that their kids dont even need. just imagine when us who were born in the 80’s we didnt have any of that stuff and we were just fine. Everything is about money even car seats we used the same car seats forever and now you have to switch them every 3-5 years. All about money.

I was born in the mid-80s and I had a circular baby walker which was all, metal, apart from a padded canvas sling seat. I loved shuffling or scooting all over the floor and I was more interested in the things I should be playing with, rather than anything out of my reach which I shouldn't have, although, I did knock my Gran's cup of tea over the carpet when I bumped into the side table by her chair once. I also had a floor bouncy seat, where baby is suspended round the middle in a 45 degree slant, not quite flat. That couldn't be adjusted as the frame didn't allow for it, I also had a larger baby bejorn chair which had better supportive sides, a bit like a stroller seat or carseat. I spent some time in that watching the telly. The floor seats didn't really delay my development or endanger my life, half as much as the surgeries I had on both my eyes and my face where I have a cleft lip and palate which couldn't be fully repaired or sewn shut. I was sitting up at 4 months, although one of my mum's friends threatened to put hair curlers up my cardy if I didn't sit up, I learnt to crawl on the beach at 7 months, because I immediately, made for the sea, because I could both hear it and see where it was at the time. I was walking by 11 months, although I was still cruising round furniture, so I don't entirely believe that these toys were so lethal... otherwise, I wouldn't be here. Can't say too much about exersaucers or jumperoos or door bouncers, because they weren't around until my cousin, now 30, was born and he was in one by 5 months of age. He didn't delay when it came to becoming mobile either. He walked quite early or rather, he crawled as fast as he could before running as fast as he could in quite a short couple of months or so. He's now been a paramedic for about the last 10 years or so, just about one of the most non stop active careers you could possibly hope for. 😂😅
Basically - trust you baby to sit up and to walk when their body is ready - even if it means they will be 'behind' their contemporaries. It shocked me when a midwife told me I SHOULD get a babywalker and 'push my baby to walk.' I pointed out that neither I nor my siblings had them - yet we all learned to walk upright. Are there really people who think humans did not walk upright before wheels were invented?

Ah, yay. I'm happy to know I didn't put a single one of these on my registry. I simply considered them unnecessary, prior to even researching the risks of using them. I have also read that babies will expend more energy when they do regular amounts of activity in traditional ways (tummy time, floor gym, playing with parents), and this will help them to be less fussy when you put them down for a nap!
When I was in preschool, one of my younger cousins had one of those baby jumper things and I was JEALOUS. It looked like fun to me. Then, one day, my mom says we're going to the mall to buy a jumper. I was psyched. Unfortunately for little pre-school me, a "jumper" (in the US anyway) is a term for a little dress. I was expecting high flying thrills. I got clothes. Total meltdown, particularly when my poor mother explained that the "jumper" I wanted was designed for babies and that they didn't make them for kids my size. Clearly, the emotional trauma is with me to this day lmao.

Interesting! I had my daughter in poverty in a third world country. I had literally nothing. 15 years later I’m pregnant again! I have been wondering what I need to “buy” this helped :) also she walked talked crawled etc all very early
Lol all these things are crazy because you don't need all these things for babies to develop. It all just commercial.
Having a baby in poverty made me realise that babies dont need anything but some clothes to wear!

I am really surprised about this video. When my children were babies I was told not to use these toys. Both learned walking with 11 month. This is 30 years ago and it is concernig that these toys are still used.
The most annoying part is that everybody in my life keeps suggesting all of these toys to us or even worse trying to buy them to us (a gentle way of imposing them on us).
The exercise saucers bouncers are a real non necessary toy. My boy loved his bouncer . He could stand up holding on to things at 5 months but the bouncer was what he wanted to play with because it was fun and learning to crawl and walk wasn't as fun. Eventually I realized he wasn't trying to learn because he was addicted to the bouncer. I took the bouncer away and he freaked out and had a whole tantrum and he was standing up screaming and shouting because it was gone. At that moment I realized he could stand unsupported and he just was using the excer saucer as a play lounger like a sit hammock. All it did was make him un interested in crawling and walking around.

Yikes we have been using a saucer and i agree, my daughter is not interested in learning to crawl and is still having a hard time sitting independently at 6.5 months. Going to phase it out!
This is amazing video. I have seen people recommending me to introduce my baby to a walker. But I didn't buy them. Because every baby is different, they'd Learn things at their pace. All that we need to check is if the baby is active. This is an eye opener video for parents who wanna make their babies for forceful learning

I've been doing tummy time since my baby has been born. She's going to be six months tomorrow and has been able to roll from tummy to back and back to tummy. She can also sit independently now. Although she still can't go from lying to sitting. But she'll get there. Your videos have helped me so much
When did your little one actively start engaging in tummy time more? My boy (9 weeks) either hates it or lifts his head for 3 seconds, then lets it drop and just licks his play mat 😂
@@gemmaartner2780 I was told at the baby class we go to that it still counts, even if he’s just lying there resting!! Mine didn’t seem to do too much at first, but on his dads chest he would lift his head up and have a good look at his face. Now he’s nearly 5 months old and does really well on his tummy. So for anyone reading this just keep trying (and watch Emma’s video on tummy time). I also got some black and white board books from the library and he would focus on them, seemed to find them interesting!
Saw a lot of comments wondering why parents buy these items. I guess they must have had very contented angelic babies. Or none at all yet. Because most often, these items are not bought to accelerate development. They are bought in a desperate attempt to try anything that might help the baby stop crying and allow the parents to catch a break. I speak from experience, because my child was such an infant who was constantly screaming if not held upright. Before he could sit, I carried him attached to my boob, bounced on a ball while attempting to eat lunch. Granted I carried my child all over the house in a carrier to keep him contented, I did accept a baby walker for a couple of months so that I could sit for a quick meal with the family, like a real human being, while he rolled all over the place. Did I know about the potential delay baby walkers may bring? Yes I did, I knew of it from this channel. Did I not see how dangerous it could be? Yes I did. But I used it to catch a break, not because I was trying to teach my child to walk. Just thought I should bring this perspective up for a balance of views, so that those who had an easier time raising their children do not think their less fortunate counterparts are totally out of their minds for using these products. I respect this channel for all the excellent information delivered, but I feel I have to speak up for the parents as desperate as I was.

After watching this video I have a question; my baby girl is almost 9 m.o , she is crawling since 7.5m.o (thanks to your advices!) and I saw her experimenting with her body until she supports herself on her feet holding her hands on the sofa, crib, etc. Now she is using the support of her highchair -which is for her feet -to put herself in vertical position (it's a Stokke tripp trapp one).What should I do? Maybe remove this support? I saw she is using the tip of her feet 😟

I never used a walker to get the baby to walk. I moved them into the kitchen while i was preparing dinner, locked it in place and placed toys on the tray. They were not in them more than 15 minutes but it had them safely corraled with me. Can't imagine them being able to reach poison or anything dangerous unless you are really careless or store things in odd places

I never used the floor seat and baby walker and thank God because by the time she turned 6 months, my baby was able to seat on her own. When she turned 1, she can walk on her own unattended.
In addition to my comment, my baby developed a sense of cautiousness. When she started to learn to walk, she was more careful and will touch the floor if it is hard or soft before she allows us to let her walk on her own.
My husband was insistent we needed a jumperoo as my son tried a friends around 6 months and loved it- however he was walking completely unaided at 8 months, definitely wouldn’t have if we had these kinds of toys. In my experience playing on the floor was the best thing for my baby’s development

I have a different experience where I used a jumperoo at 4 months. And I noticed rapid strength development in her legs. She is now pulling to stand at 6 months cruising and crawling. I feel the jumperoo had helped
@@CB-123 the jumperoo can cause overly tight calf muscles which the baby then walks on tip toes. I’ve seen this in my niece. That being said I plan on using it with my kids for my own sanity 🙈
My sister didn’t use any of that, and my nephew walks on his tippy toes lol I think it’s just hereditary his dad sometimes walks on his tippy toes lol
@@mayracecilia7424 my son tip toe walks from time to time and my nephew does it a lot. I think it is fairly common and usually not something to worry about. Although I have read it can be an early sign of autism
When should I start using the high chair for my baby and which one is the best? Also are baby carriers good for babies, and which one do you recommend?
We brought a walker for the firstborn b/c everyone else was... bad decision. It delayed his walking for abt 3 to 4 months. So we didn't do anything for our second born, and he hit all the developmental milestones early.

It can be hard to say no when you are gifted these toys.
As a mom of two kids, I constantly worry that maybe I am not giving my kids the right toys and I am not doing correct activities with them. But I am very happy that I do not own any of these and my thought of why we don't need these pretty much were the same as what you said. Thank you!

So happy I didn’t waste money on any of these, I’ve read about these issues before. However, what are your thoughts on the Fisher Price Sit Me Up seat? I’ve heard that one is much better and our little guy (5months) loves to try sitting up independently. Would you recommend? And would it still be for the 10-15 minute time limit?
It might be worth looking at the reviews on Amazon. But if your baby is trying to sit up, it won't be long before he manages it.

I do agree with this but all my 4 babies had varying amounts of these toys/devices but I did limit their times In them. They were all sat up in aided at 5 months crawling from 4-6 months and walking unaided from 9-11 months. I think that was maybe because I didn't use them allllll the time and I listed their usage times. I think these things are ok , like anything in life in controlled quantities 😊

I am a grandparent of 2 grandsons....my first grand baby did have a jumper but he was way past 6 months...thing is I don't believe most parents are trying to injure their little ones....what we have been witnessing is that these babies are standing , jumping and pulling themselves up BEFORE 5 months of age...we can't carry and hold them all the time , And we use these devices so things can get done around the home...unless you use those back and chest holders while you do your cleaning and other activities at home.

To this day, 30 years later, I still have a faint burn scar on my left arm from when I was in my walker and made my way to my parents' bathroom where my mom had accidentally left her curling iron on after finishing her hair and of course I pulled the cord and the iron landed on my arm.
I have to ask how you feel about the Upseat floor seat, it is crazy expensive for a floor seat, but it can also be strapped to a dining chair and can be purchased with a tray attatchment- but it is the only floor seat designed by doctors and therapists to not only allow the baby's legs to go into the M position, but also holds the baby in a proper postural position and they claim that it helps babies use the muscles they need to be using to learn to sit up on their own. I have one- we paid $109 for it instead of buying a high chair. We use it as a high chair, a floor seat, and a portable high chair at restaraunts, etc. I honestly cannot tell if it has aided his gross motor development w regard to sitting upright, but it definitely doesn't seem to have hindered it. It has come in super handy though and it doesn't hold him so that he cannot lean forward or backward in it. Although in the Warnings from the manufacturer it does say not to use it as a floor seat (only use strapped to a chair) if baby can arch back or reach over the sides of it at all.

Baby Walker: I put my daughter in a baby walker. She walked on her own @ 10 months. No problems with leaning or slouching. She never crawled.....I took her outside in the grass and stood her up (bare feet)....moved a few inches back at a time and let her come to me. Face to face. The grass and ground was soft, so she never got hurt. ..I was at the same level as she...on the ground with her. In about half an hour, she was walking on her own! Same results as my son. Decades later.....they walk just fine, lol.
As for the safety issue? I watched my kids like a hawk. =)

Do the Sit-Me-Up seats (i.e., Fisher Price), pose delays like the floor seat you mentioned in the video?
I would be worried about that overstressing the spine since the baby must hold their head upright before fully developing neck muscles
Think about how heavy a baby's head is compared to the rest of their body, and how weak their muscle and frame are.
Also, it seems like a prison to me, where the child is locked into that thing and unable to move at all.
A crib or pen means they get some freedom to move around
Hi Emma, love all your videos! I’d like to point out where I disagree with some parts of this one. The house must be baby proofed regardless of the “developmental” devices the baby uses. There’s no excuse for a baby having access to something that scalds or hurts them in some way. Same with baby going down stairs in a walker. We have gates, end of story. The time it takes to get from immobile to crawling, to walking is within a year, more or less, so those gates need to be in place by the time baby arrives or shortly thereafter.
I don’t look at seats, bouncers, and walkers to be developmental per se, but a way for baby to have new experiences and entertainment for a limited amount of time.
I never had a bumbo but similar with a tray. We had it on the kitchen counter so my son could be up high, watching what we were doing and trying new puree foods. This was more snug (and padded) than a high chair. When he got bigger and gained strength we moved him to a high chair.
My son tried a walker and thought it was fun to push himself around but like with everything, it didn’t last very long. It was more useful for suction cup discovery toys.
His absolute favorite was the bouncer! It was an activity center like an excer saucer with bungees for bouncing. He sat in an M position with his feet flat underneath. He most often sat back, stood up on flat feet, or leaned forward to play with a toy on the activity center. He spent hours in this thing, all broken up throughout the day. He developed normally into the standing position, he was a speed crawler, and he recently learned to walk at the exact month his father did. I was keeping an eye out for his leg and feet position based on some of your other videos. Also, when I had a chiropractor appointment my dr offered to look him over. It wasn’t necessary but good to know everything was in alignment.
So, my main take on these “developmental” devices is
1. Safety always regardless of what baby is doing.
2. Everything in moderation and with supervision.
3. Entertainment and exploration should be a consideration.
One should not be afraid to use these devices as it is portrayed in this video if they make 1 and 2 a priority.

The reason why we can still buy and use these products is because manufacturers earn too much money on parents. They will put a tag that says (4+, learn numbers and colors) and a parent will buy anything. With enough money and lobbying, you can make anything seem "safe". PT has seen a drastic change in the last 20 years, but the voice is not strong enough to travel across the world. Also, chile safe products are being constantly removed from the market. Sad thing is they are removed after a child gets hurt or worse.
The demage these things do to your child are likely to show way later in life ( 30 - 40 years old) and none will connect them to those devices - it might be something like neck problems, flat feet, painfull hip, headaches… Yeah - kids usually like bouncer and walkers but it does not mean that they are good for them … even in moderation :-)
Thank you for saying everything I was thinking! Your house should already be baby proofed no matter what. And these things should not be used in excess. If your baby is sitting in one of these long enough to create hip problems, then you shouldn't be a parent lol

Montessori also stresses not using devices that limit baby’s natural movement so this is how we initially didn’t purchase any of these items. Our daughter is either placed on the floor or occasionally in a baby bjorn. But that’s been it for now. Maybe some tips for when baby is crawling/walking how we can safely engage her without containing her in a device.
Baby gates and baby proofing if you don't want to put them in a baby jail/playpen?
I bought the biggest playpen possible and connected 2 together to make a giant playpen, it's probably more than 100sqft.
Also to add, my baby loves the playpen because she can pull up and walk along it.

@@Squintina I got the Albott baby playpen 22 panels, you can search on Amazon. But in hindsight, I should have gotten the regalo instead (get the 192 inch one, use as play pen, then when they're older, use as baby gate). The Albott has these covered walls so my baby can't see outside. The regalo are just bars that baby can pull up on and look outside to see what we're doing.

I once held a friend’s baby who was about 8 months old. He constantly bounced up and down on his feet on my lap. He simply would not sit. I asked his mom if he used a bouncer. He did. He was a beautiful healthy baby who never fussed. Always happy. He did eventually learn to walk and was very good at sitting contentedly in someone’s lap or playing on the floor, but he was speech delayed. Just never made a sound. His parents were kind and loving and attentive. I moved away so I haven’t kept track of his development. I assume he was just a late talker. I would love to see him again. He was adored by a large group of us. I do think the bouncer was a bit of a mistake though and his mom didn’t need us to tell her that. It was readily apparent. I’ve often wondered if it was difficult to babble and bounce at the same time.
The bouncer isn’t the issue. I narrated everything to my baby when going to the grocery store and doing things at home. No speech issues even though he used a bouncer and had access to an iPad while I cooked meals. You just have to talk to your child all the time.

Would the angelcare bath seat, which I use for bathing my 8w old baby girl, be considered bad for her development? (Though if it is, bath time is only like 15 minutes long so I guess it wouldn't be too bad...)
Adding: my little 8-week-old baby has been doing so well without any of these bulky toys. We do have a baby swing for when I'm eating, but otherwise she's either on her foam mats (one upstairs, one downstairs) or in my arms/lap (as loosely supported as can be done safely). She can hold up her head very high and for several minutes at a time, even while (assisted) standing, pushes up on one arm during tummy time to raise herself, and already successfully batting at toys and even reaching and grabbing some of them!
Sounds like your little one is doing great with her development! It is so exciting when they start to reach for and grab toys!
The bath seat would be fine for your little one's development. It is more if you use the equipment for long periods of time. It's really all about variety in positions - so lots of floor time, as well as, time in your arms etc.

Can you give some feedback regarding an UpSeat? It was developed by pediatric Occupational Therapist to get babies in the correct anatomical position for sitting and prevent hip dysplasia. Are these ok to use if baby cannot sit up yet?
I used a walker for my child he was walking early. You have to watch them though so they don’t get into accidents. Generally it’s safe if you don’t have stairs or you don’t keep them in there for too long.

Im expecting my first child
and I’ve opt out to buy or put on my registry any of these items simply because I refuse our home to be over run by baby items that are only going to be use in their first year of life or less. I find it wasteful but now knowing also potential risks of using these items makes me feel less selfish in my decision. 😂

I would like to say this stuff really just depends on the baby because I put my kids in half of these and they did everything on time except for my baby one she did not understand how to use the restroom on time but everything else yes so plz keep in mind that every baby is different and y'all are trying y'all very best
All 4 of my boys had 3 of these. They all hit their mile stones, sometimes early and can walk and sit absolutely fine. Well they are men now 😂
This is so weird, my kids both used walkers, exersaucers, and jumpers, and were walking and standing upright at around 9 months to a year, which is normal. Maybe using these items for limited times during the day, and in between having normal play, and doing the hand hold walking for normal exercise can be paired in a way that the baby develops properly. I wouldn't go as far as to say never to use these items though. That's kinda silly.
Yeah I think this is to prevent extreme use. If ones baby sits in these toys for half the day, that'd be a real impediment. I don't like the walker though, I saw my own kid almost topple face first as he sped crashing into a door frame top speed. I caught him and he was OK, but I decided that he wasn't using a walker anymore after that.
I agree with you, I see kids today walk later than kids from earlier generations
I agree. Plus the bouncer has been a sanity saver for me so I can actually take a shower 😅

Same. My first walked at 8 months and used a walker, jumper, and exercise saucer. My second was a “late bloomer” and walked at 10 months while using all those things.

My mother became anxious because my daughter was not sitting up by 6 months. If baby floor seats were around then, Mum would have bought one. Until seeing this video, I'd never heard of an exersaucer

We didn't have any of these...except the exersaucer, which the time human haaaated, so she was only in it once for like 5 minutes
Are all baby floor seats bad developmentally? What about the upseat or the sit-me-up seat?

Thanks! But aren't all these cases a little extreme? I just worry that family members will use this on my kids as they have on their own and this will lead to paranoia and further conflict
Of course these are extreme cases. It would be best to just tell your family members to please not use these things, but don´t worry to much. As long as it´s not a regular activity and the kid isn´t left in these devices for long times at once, your baby should be fine.
They are examples of the extremes. I do understand parents worries, however that hasnt been my experience. For example; I was running at 9 months, yes, running.... I was very strong and hit milestones early. I was put in a walker all the time and I ran in it full speed. I never hurt myself because mum made sure to watch me in it. I used the jumper too... A lot! And I never walked on my toes or had hip problems or any of these things happening to me.
My son was born very strong too. He walked at the "normal" time a toddler walks. But he used a walker and a jumper too, much less then I did, but he still used it. I kept a very close eye on him and he has grown quite well.
My baby now has a jumper. He was born very strong. Rolling at 3 weeks etc. Loves to be standing with our support as he is almost 4 months. We are with him while he is in his jumper and it is only once per day for about 15 minutes until he gets older and stronger. He is exploring the buttons and bounces occasionally.
Please try not to be so worried. Every parent, parents differently. And as long as your child isn't in these items for very long at a time and are fully watched they will grow and develop well.
As long as your baby gets lots of tummy time and supported walking and time for sitting etc you are doing a great job!
I think a lot of them have to be extreme. For example, people nowadays are always talking about hip dysplasia as if it's a big problem. How many people do you know that have hip dysplasia or were treated for it as a child? Probably none. Because as it turns out, hip dysplasia is almost always a problem that occurred before birth. Not because a baby used a bouncer seat for 20 minutes a day. I think it's important that we do our best for our babies, but some of this stuff just makes parents paranoid...

I used the walker for her around 5 months and to move, she reached the floor with her toes first...

I would actually disagree with the statement that an exersaucer isn't needed anymore once a baby can stand. I didn't use mine until my baby could stand and I used it as a place of confinement for short times when she needed to be occupied so I could do something she couldn't get into like opening the oven or loading/unloading the dishwasher. So I would just add that the exersaucer can be used safely and appropriately, but using them as you describe would certainly cause all the things you say.

RE: baby walker injuries, my sister went down a flight of stairs in a baby walker!:D She was somehow fine! Still... must've been some ride.
Not to mention older children pushing the baby too fast in those toys. A baby’s poor head can be thrown back when the sibling does this.
What about a seating scooter for my 12 month old baby? I would never buy it but she was gifted one. Is it damaging for her motor skills?

those bumbo seats just look awful! i got one and never used it bc my baby just looked terribly uncomfortable in it… however i found the newer “upseat” which is supposed to be ergonomically correct and she sits in it sully supported and comfortably… highly recommend it!
On the baby walker: I always wondered why I only ever saw them in your videos and never anywhere else. Then you mentioned that they have been banned in Canada since 2004. Makes sense I've never seen them, they've been banned in my country since my childhood!🤣

Basically all modern toys are not good for children. Kudos to you for speaking on this topic while most doctors don't care to give these advices to new parents and run from Hospital to Hospital seeing how much money they can earn🤑🤑🤑
What toys do you recommend? Esp ones that keep them in place when you need to put them down for a few minutes.

But none of these toys keep the baby in one place. If you need to keep your baby in one place a portacot or play pen might be helpful. Or if you can make the room baby proof then there might not be any reason to keep them in one place.
I found an exer-saucer and a floor seat for cheap so I got them just to see how its works out and at first he liked the floor seat but now he doesnt like either of them that much so I think he may be uncomfortable anyways. I tried sitting him in them while I go to the restroom rather than puting him in the pack and play and him just screaming for however long it takes me to pee. But now I either lay him in his bathtub or just lay him on the bath mat
