While everyone is thinking about storage space, let me recommend a space rarely utilized. If you have standard height contemporary ceilings, (this is 8 feet high in the U.S.) and you have a sewing room or spare guest room (or any room), there is just over 12" of space above the door you enter thru. If you can run a 12" deep shelf from wall to wall above the door, it will give you enormous amounts of storage space. Placing it over the door you enter through looks less cluttery as you enter. Also, cardboard bankers boxes can be purchased rather inexpensively and will fit on those shelves. Covering the boxes with wallpaper or fabric will be more aesthetically pleasing and they can be neatly labeled. Gluing felt to the bottom will have them slide off the shelf more easily. Often a shelf can also be placed above a door in a hallway, and better quality storage boxes on those can look very nice.

I did that in my old flat, which had very high ceilings. It was amazing.
Stored my towels and such in the bathroom that way as well. There was no room for a standing shelf, but plenty of room over the tub (which I rarely used anyway).

Just be careful about storing things above your head. About two weeks ago a large, heavy box tipped off upper shelves in our closet and crashed onto my unsuspecting head. Thankfully I didn't suffer a concussion, but the bruises still haven't all gone away. Make your shelves wide and sturdy.

With standard 1"x 12" pine or 3/4" thick MDF, supports every 36" or less should work just fine. As studs are typically 16" on center along a wall, and shelf supports should be screwed into the studs, this places a bracket support every 32"- which works great. When hanging shelving, I prefer to mount the front edge just a tiny bit higher than the back. Not enough to look off kilter, but just enough to keep anything from sliding off the front. Shelving very rarely should ever need to be anything more than 12" deep from front to back. Deeper shelving causes stuff to be stored behind other things and makes access very difficult and easy to misplace things.

I'm fairly happy with my sewing space. I doubled my boudoir for sewing and sleeping since its a temporary situation. I moved to Tennessee to be "live in child care" for a friend while the COVID Madness is in full force. She put me up in her unfurnished guest room and I went to town...
I put up corner quarter round shelves in the corner for my 50s bright red Steam-O-Matic Iron and Point Presser on one, and favorite sewing books and records on the other. Underneath the shelves, I placed a Vintage Wardrobe Steamer Trunk for Fabric storage. I kept my bed as a twin size to save space, and purchased a very nice mattress for it. I placed a small cedar foot locker at the foot of the bed for crinoline/petticoat storage. Doubled my dresser as a cutting table, and placed two small 1/4 round shelves above the dresser to hold all the stuff that would normally litter the dresser top (that way the cutting table is alway available). My night stand is a Singer 40 cabinet with my Singer 500A in it, and I placed a Singer 42 cabinet with my Singer 201-2 between the door and the closet for a desk. I mounted a small shelf between the 42 cabinet and the wall to place my computer and store my keyboard when not in use. And because I require a radio, I put a 1942 Zenith Console Radio on the bare wall to keep the ambience. I keep my Kirby vacuum and Jiffy J3 Steamer in the closet with my sewing basket, thread box, and pattern box on the top shelf above them. I hung the Ironing Board on the back of the closet door, and all my cams and attachments fit in a MAC train case inside my steamer trunk. To finish the room I hung a couple lovely paintings, and a Kit-Cat Clock above the door.
For storage, the steamer trunk was the single greatest find. Someone was moving and didn't want to tote it... so I picked it up for free. It's a vertical garment steamer trunk, so it has hangers and shoe box storage on one side and 7 full length drawers on the other side. You undo 2 latches and you can swing it open to get to your hung patterns, drafting tools, and sewing attachemments on one side; and storage for 10-15 bolts of fabric in the drawers on the right. It's mobile, free standing, aesthetically pleasing, and takes up very little room since it's designed to be vertical standing.
When my sewing room is not in use, I have a lovely (and fully functional) 40s style boudoir, and to sew, I just have to move the keyboard off the Singer 42 cabinet (computer desk) and the windup travel alarm clock/picture frame off the Singer 40 cabinet (night stand), and I'm ready to sew.

Oh Evelyn, I so need this! I bought too small of a house. It's only a 2 bedroom, just me but now with grandkids and bunk beds, where to sew? I remember growing up and my Grandmother's house. It was a 2 bedroom. When we went to visit, there was 7 of us. She professionally sewed. Here we are, all us kids on her bed buried in sewing items all over the room. Never blinked and had the best time ever. So, my closet is my painting and sewing storage set up with drawers from dressers I didn't want and made shelves out of and, well you can guess the rest. I also have an industrial sewing machine, that I have to keep in the garage because it is so heavy I can't lift the table. It is an old Consew, with the motor underneath. For some reason I love the old machines. I also am sewing on a Necchi that I just inherited. And in storage is an old treadle Singer. Sew vintage, use vintage machine. Now, can't wait to watch the rest of your videos. Thank you for sharing. I love your hair cut. I have to take the plunge and cut mine too.

Love your hair! Perfect timing! I am at the messy stage . Wish I could move everything out of the room and start from scratch. I love my small room and it has great light. Everything needs to stay in my room without any overflow. I have been sewing for many years so I have squired stot of stuff. I am cleaning and giving away slot of things . My husband refurbished two file cabinets for my patterns. I love them. He made me two bookcases for my books and fabric. I love the bones of my space . As I was cleaning and sorting idealized I had too much of some things and not enough of others. I found lots of treasures, I thought I lost. I is a journey . There are memories and even more will be made. Thanks for the help and knowing someone else is going through the same thing.

Love the haircut! It’s adorable! I drew out my floor plan on graph paper and cut out shapes of my tables and chairs from graph paper as well so they would be as close to scale as possible. So I could rearrange things on paper to see if they would fit my space. Also, I’m the kind of person who likes to have my organizing system out of sight because I don’t like visual clutter. Some people like to see everything they have-not me. I don’t need to see it to know where it is bc I I keep like things together.

I was having this problem also, and I found a solution without having a huge cutting table. I bought an old folding sewing cutting cardboard thing at a yard sale, and it fits on my bed, so when I have to cut stuff out on the bed, I lay it out, place the fabric and pattern pieces, sit down in my rolly office chair and work away. After I'm done, I fold the cardboard and put it behind the door.

I'm in the midst of setting up my very 1st sewing room! Found a gorgeous Ethan Allen Desk Armoire that was over $3k for $60!!! Then a foldable Cutting table for only $35...I've covered some foam board with fabric to lighten up the interior of the armoire sewing space...Next will be making an Idea Borard using the same technique for the wall. Found color coordinating bins & baskets at Dollar General for storage inside armoire as well. And finally, so far, found a beautiful white & chrome office chair for only $32...Being frugal, not cheap, brings joy to my heart! Especially when I can bring it all together to make a space I love and enjoy spending in.

I have a part of a room that also serves as a home office and crafting area, so it is a busy space. I've lined one wall with tall stainless steel wire shelving. This allows me lots of storage space for my sewing and for my home office. The high ceilings in that room are a bonus- we use plastic totes with lids to store fabric, batting, and yarn.

    Love your hairstyle!
About 13 years ago, our local primary school built a whole new building for the junior section - 8 classrooms, 2 utility rooms, a meeting room and a huge open area in the middle for junior school assemblies. My younger daughter spent two years here, while my eldest "missed out". Once this was in operation, the old building was dismantled (all portable classrooms tacked together) and the furniture sold off to the public to reduce removal costs for the school. We (as parents) were very fortunate to obtain 3 long benches for only $10 each - 2 of which are set back-to-back in the middle of my sewing room like an island, so my sewing table is 90cm wide and 240cm long with access along each side - you simply can't get anything with those dimensions! The 3rd one is against the wall parallel to the others. We also got 2 old metal bookshelves ($5 each!) which we sat on top of the 3rd bench (the laminate top of this one was not aesthetically nice, but was structurally sound), with cardboard storage boxes as pull-out drawers (I pasted swatches of the fabrics on the outside instead of labels).
The same year, I had to move out the spare bunk-beds from this room as a house further up our street was having a moving sale, so we walked home carrying 4 large bookcases (one at a time between us!) with adjustable shelves for a total of $120! One houses my notions in plastic ice-cream containers; another has all my patterns organised in pull out plastic baskets, another has sewing books, a spare machine, my iron and other tools, my radio, etc; (these 3 bookcases have a lot of stuff as about 2/3rds of it came from my mother-in-law after she died); the 4th one has other crafts and is set with a gap between the last two which houses my freestanding ironing board!
I'm not too fussed with decor, so I don't mind the mustard coloured bench tops on the dark brown cabinets not matching the 4 tan coloured bookcases, or the 2 grey metal bookcases - I'm more into the utility of the furniture. You don't have to buy brand new if you don't have the budget for it, and furniture can be painted if you are working on a theme - so have a look at garage sales and op-shops and reuse/reduce/recycle! Much love.

My organizing and storage is a work in progress. I just built a table that's 42" x 96" long and 40" high for cutting and putting things together on. And in one corner of it is where one of my machines is installed. There is a shelf under it that's 32" x 86" with exception of a cutout at the one end for my legs when using the machine that's mounted into it. My other machine has its own cabinet with 3 drawers in it. On each side of it is another set of drawers, one about 12" wide and the other is about 18" wide. Next summer I'll be bringing home another tall cabinet. It's actually an old kitchen cupboard that is portable. That will be the rest of my storage space.

I know exactly what I want and how, but it cost money, which is really tight, even with my ability of reusing and salvaging etc and I would need my partner to do it for me as I am no good at DIY (physically). I love your haircut Evelyn! I have been planning my sewing/craft room for years but it has never come to fruition and all I have is a room full of boxes! I've come to the conclusion I will never do it unless I get all the stuff out of the room so I can furnish it with a cutting table and storage. So, in order to do this I will have to put all the stuff into storage while I sort the room then I can bring it all back bit by bit untlil it is done. I don't have the space for sorting it all here which is why it has just been left. Hunting through boxes to find something I know I have is frustrating and, often, I end up not making what I want as, when I have searched and found what I need for the project I have no energy for it any more!! It won't be done very oon though as I have other things requiring money before I can hire the storage space, purchase the table and storage and get the room ready. Excited for your next video as I am not good at organising!!

hey Evelyn and the subscribers! im a guy and here is how my sewing room works. its my closet as well. in the room i have my industrial dropfeed straight only machine, a 56"x33" cutting table (free table and like 80$ cutting mat ducttaped down, fits perfect), and another table all scooted together but with a couple inches between them for cords and fabric to advantagousy fall in between.
there's canned goods under the cutting table and i have drawing tools for oak tag, fabric stored on shelving in there, drawers with noitions/webbing/etc.
i dont have an overlocker but do have one of those mini walking foots that zig zags(9" harp not 7" woot) and i tuned it to feed pretty good. it can run very thin thread too. my binder folders will get attached soon once i get smaller head screws for it.
putting the tables all bunched together allowed me to put in a standard/small room a lot of 'workspace'. its a guys sewing room and mainly when something needs thread it gets dispatched and life goes on. although my next project is more canopies for bicycle trailers. the first came out looking great with linseeded(and cured) canvas. oh and a ultralight backpack im slowly drafting and tweaking but itll probably get done cleverly with natural materials if not ideal performance synthetics. for curves i cut oak tag how i need and use that and may never buy big curves/french curves
e, the 20u singer style machines i sometimes wish i settled for instead of my walking foot but after tuning it and learning how the feet work it isnt too bad and because despite being industrial, it can be slid out of the way it works really good in the room. (anyone looking for maintenece advice on miniwalkingfoots lemme kno)

Evelyn you soooo suit your red top! I too have had to embrace my straight hair😜. I just watched phase 1 and had to come back and watch this one, I love organising vids, I’m moving house so as soon as I’m settled I’m going to actually put this into practice. Have a great day😊 nice that the weather is dry in Brissy today….

Amen! I agree. I have half of this done, but I can't seem to get the rest figured out. I have a couple of bad spots that don't function well, and I have a traveling nightmare pile that moves around the room, but never goes away. This is so well timed. I was hoping to get this done by the end of the year. YAY! Thank you.

The Kallax shelves from IKEA sand and all the various inserts you can get for them are amazing! I highly recommend them. So much storag, so versatile and so many different options.

Thank you for doing this series! We are in the process of moving yet again, and I've had to rethink and revamp my sewing space expectations a couple different times now. My biggest challenge is that we will be dividing our time between a 3-bedroom house where I will share space with a guest room, and a 1-bedroom vacation house where storage space is at a premium, and temporary. In other words, I have to figure out how to take my act on the road lol
Your new haircut is adorable, and it suits you! Embrace it! I've learned that it's better to stop fighting with your hair and call a truce instead with a cut that's easy to style.

You hair looks so good! I think it is so much easier to embrace the type of hair you have. Plus it is so flattering. My sewing room is packed and I am in the process of reorganizing it for the 100th time. I am looking through my fabrics and if I don’t love, love it, then I am either selling or donating it.

This video has great timing. I’ve been working on my room between projects. The big thing for me was labels. While I was digging around I found I had some things in two or more spots. Life is much easier when all the things are together in some sort of order.

My sewing room is also th guest room but I don't focus on making it nice for guest. There is a twin bed and that is it. Once I get my sewing room fixed it will also be nice for guest. I also have no money for buying furniture so I work with what I have which is some nice things. I look forward to watching this series.

Hi, Evelyn! I find myself having to pay much attention to storing machine thread these days, just when I thought that issue was not an issue. Thing is, I'm finding more and more of unopened, forgotten spools stashed away here and there that I bought over 20 years ago at Walmart for $0.25 each! (Am I describing that similar shopping bag that someone else too bought home from the store that vanished for years only to resurface by now with little memory of you ever buying it, lol?) I know, a throwback, right? I have tested some of the found spools and they are still good! I have thread racks with little available storage space but will surely need 2-3 more racks by the time I'm done... yep, that much thread found- TFS!

I purchase a lovely 1960's kitchen hutch, with original mint green and cream paint. My sewing room is my bedroom combined. I call it the tree house, as my house is on stilts and a big native tree grows outside. So I get to watch all the little Finches, Wrens, Currawongs, various honey eaters dance around the tree.

This is actually excellently timed with me moving into a new house. It's not the prettiest but it's all ours. I'll be sharing the room with my vanity table and some clothes but it's plenty of space that I need to configure what the priorities are for this space and what I will be doing

Loving the haircut, makes your eyes even more striking! Thanks for this series, I am sorting through my stashes and realizing I don’t have enough life left for all the projects I have planned lol…so I have started putting all projects into clear linen bags with the ideas, haberdashery and fabric. Then I have organized into seasons (Canadian) and that has really eased the project pile 🤓

I am here because I just took over a built in desk area that has been a catch all of kitchen gadgets and cleaning supplies since we moved in. It’s a small space but deceptively roomy. I just have to utilize it to the max
