Adapting a Pillar drill as a Lathe Day 23 - 30 Day Youtube Challenge - BANDARRA

- I've been wanting to try woodturning for a bit and with having made the epoxy handles a few days ago I now had a good excuse for it.
Because I'm cheap I had the idea of turning my cheap pillar drill into a lathe. Mounted it horizontally and made some attachements.
The result wasn't great. Didn't quite work as expected as the was a lot of miss-alignment, difficulty in gripping the work piece and the tool rest wasn't sturdy enough. Also probably didn't help that I was using chisels.

I'm not an expert but I have a little experience using lathes. I think it would work better if you keep the tool rest about 3-5mm from the widest part of the workpiece. Also make the tool rest flat. Especially when starting out you probably want the tool positioned as stablily as possible. Not sure it is right technique or safe but I use my thumb as a pivot point on the toolrest and sort of lever the tool into the work fractions of a mm at a time, especially when getting it rounded. Once it is smooth and round, it gets a lot easier.
Now for a goofy trivia question I've been wondering about lately. Many of my childhood friends were from Central and South America and someone gave me the same habit of speech you have of saying "this guy" or "these guys" when talking about mechanical parts. Is that Spanish/Portuguese idiom or is it specific to a country or region?
Maybe soak the whole thing in water.
Most of cardboard should just peel away.
Just a thought.
