I saw him with J.Geils Band in a small club in Paris in 1977 or 78. I was in the first row, I could almost touch the stage floor. Singer Peter Wolf stepped on stage with a bottle of champagne in his hand! Great concert . Great memories.
I see them twice, at the state theater in Kalamazoo and down in tennessee state fair grounds. $6.50 for five bands, ZZ, nazareth, Jake Geils, john boy adams, can't remember the other one. About 50 years ago. (Ricky)===:::
I had a friend that played and if you mentioned Magic Dick he would shake his head and marvel at how he played. I’m from the Detroit area and we LOVED us some J . Geils.
Well, one of the best ones anyway... If you've ever seen Kim Wilson from the Fabulous Thunderbird play the harp, you'd think differently. I saw him live at the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor, MI. back in 2013 (Blues at the Crossroads Concert) and he came out and did the whole @20 minute encore by himself with the harp. He was playing both ends of the thing at the same time! I knew he was good, but that encore was unbelievable...
This is one of my favorite tunes, I can kinda play it but not near as well. There’s a lot of really good players and he’s one of them , one of my favorites is Lee Oscar he has a beautiful sound.
@@lilorbielilorbie2496 I would still be 17 and High as a kite cause weed was just $30-$40 a Oz. LOL You need to watch the hot tub time machine movies if you haven't seen them.
My first headline concert at the legendary Toledo Sports Arena, I went on to see them live 5 more times, the last time at Pine Knob! BTW, I saw what had to be one of the coolest t shirts ever at that show, "It Will Always Be Pine Knob To Me"
Early 1970's I was galloping horses at Belmont Racetrack, Elmont, NY, would go to the Greek diner across Hempstead Ave. at 5:00 a.m. when many trainers, grooms, riders, etc having first coffee/breakfast. Knew they left the volume up on juke box from night before, drop a quarter in...yep, you could here spoons and forks, coffee cups crashing/dropping when those first riffs came out loud! The old timers weren't happy with my early morning shenanigans of such...best reveille for early morning ever!
Bravo Magic Dick. Just so you know, I'm sitting right now in front of my computer with my Harmonica in the key of C, trying to teach my self this song. Its always been a favorite from way back. I'm hoping with some practice I can get this down and at least sound as great as you do. You are an inspiration. Love the style and the sound you get. Now I see that you have a tutorial on you tube also. So off to check it out now. Keep up the great sounds you put out. Respectfully Rhonda
THIS WAS @ THE STATE THEATRE IN SYDNEY,AUSTRALIA??? WHEN WAS THIS?? IF IT WAS ONLY THIS YEAR, WHY DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS!? OMG IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AWESOME..
You're right, but I'll take the badass tone and rhythm of a Magic Dick or any great blues player for that matter over a shit ton of notes and foot pedals at a John Popper show any day of the weak. In the end its as they say, to each their own.
Timothy Kane If you want to hear someone that was playing like Popper when John Popper was in diapers shittn' green listen to a man named Sugar Blue. Check out his version of Hootchie Kootchie Man.
@@jimchumley6568 Well, Sugar Blue is probably a good mix of the two. Very fast but also played a lot of traditional chops in there too. If you are just talking fast, dynamic harp, there is none better than Jason Ricci in my opinion. Of course, none of these fast guys are playing off the shelf harps. Many of them have special tuning and modified reeds to pull of pentatonic scales and odd blow bends. No matter how you slice it, ALL of these guys make the harmonica a great instrument that adds so much to so many styles of music!
@@fleetman5492 you don't need a custom or special tuned harp to play the pentatonic scale. It's all there just by blowing and sucking. I know for sure Jason Ricci doesn't use special tunings. I've never heard Magic Dick use special tunings. I might have heard Sugar Blue use a special tuning here or there but he's definitely used standard tunings most of the time. John Popper uses out of the box harps and not customs. You don't need a custom harp to get blow bends. Overblows on the other hand are difficult to make sound good on a non custom harp but it can be done.
My problem with harp is I think like a trumpet player, and try to do trumpet licks all the time, instead of just adapting to the strengths and weaknesses of the harp. Too many years playing trumpet and too little practice, imagination, and most of all just working to cop all the standard licks and techniques. I can DO them when listening to another player, but turn off the tape and my brain just doesn't take me back to those places. I do things you don't hear other harp players do. And sometimes it actually sounds good! You just don't want to listen to 10 minutes of EEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! for that 5 seconds of something cool.
When they opened for The Rolling Stones he got on his knees on the Edge of the Stage and Killed It!
He really put his heart into it. Dick is a lovely kind and fair minded person. A really good guy swimming in talent.
Legend. Nothing more need be said.
except an 's' at the end of the word 'need.'
@@jamesythetrue just because you have an extra "s" in your name doesn't mean we have to throw them around 🤣
@@bloozedaddy Uh no, just the one required 's' in my name. You're missing the one required 's' at the end of the word 'need.'

Lost my virginity the weekend they played at the Cape Cod Coliseum. 1978. 💃 still can’t figure out why this band isn’t in the R&R HOF.
First song I learned on harmonica. Took a solid 8 months to learn, and another 4-5mo to add the nuances, but I can finally say that I can play this!

Richard Salwitz (Magic Dick) is one of the best ever . . I started listening to him and the J.Geils band when they first made the scene . .
This is my favorite harmonica song. It makes me so happy to get to hear it

A brilliant inspiration to young harp player Mighty Michael Mendelson!!! Thank you!
Never get tired of this. Amazing and uplifting
