  • How Durable is the DLC Finish on The Kizer Knives Drop Bear. This is the first time Kizer has released a knife with a dlc coated blade and it’s on one of my favorite Kizer knives the Drop Bear. DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) is one of the strongest blade coatings that I’m aware of and I put it to the test. In this video we cut a wide variety of abrasive materials and try to scratch the dlc finish. Let’s find out if I was successful.

    Good to know. We appreciate it. Just bought another drop bear this one with a DLC coating as a edc work beater. Probably going to be purchasing a third with a premium steel because why not. Love these knives.

    That was substantial punishment. As you suggested, not only the DLC coating, but the steel itself is off the charts. BTW, I've been following you for about 8 years but this is probably my first comment. There's still hope for me!

      @@Stassa23 most definitely I can imagine not only time consuming but an easy way to just throw money away. I must say though with the stigma that's surrounding some of these supposedly "harder use" knives it is nice to know what actually measures up. Keep em coming brother

    Very impressive. Both the DLC coating and edge retention. I’m sure they are watching and I’m sure that videos like these are the reason knife quality has gone up so much over the last several years. Thank you! 👊🏼😃

    That was a good test you did and I’m impressed, DLC is tough stuff and it only needs a very thin coat if the material it’s applied to is prepped correctly and applied correctly, thanks for the test 😎

    I'll be honest, the drop bear didn't tickle my fancy. After seeing this long form video, I'm realizing how capable that S45vn model is and how well made the knife is overall 🔥

  • @RobNC-OG
    @RobNC-OG 5 місяців тому

    Well it's good to know that Kizer is properly applying the finish and also seemingly properly hardening the steel. I know that was a concern some had in the past with them, that HRC was low. It would appear that at least on their higher end knives they are doing it right if this one is an example of how they do all of them. My only complaint with my Drop bear is the crossbar lock is weak spring-wise. You can just fling it a little and it opens up.

    • @PoetFisherman
      @PoetFisherman 5 місяців тому

    I have a safety concern. It is not me trying to be the wise guy. I am just caring. I see you cutting that dense cardboard and pulling that knife to the inside of your legs. Be aware that there is big artery in that area. If you hit it you don't have much time left.

    Kizer really hit a grand slam with this one. I’ve used s45 on both a pm2 and xm18 and really like it so far. I’m going to have to grab one of these next time I can to compare. I do stone fabrication so my knives get used on a lot of cardboard, rope and other abrasive materials so the dlc might be nice.

    I have a Pro-Tech Malibu, in DLC Magnacut, and I bought that knowing how good dlc could be....and I was highly disappointed. Scratched through to the blade. I cut lots of carboard, vinyl, occasionally scrape it on some metal at work. I might need this knife.....

    DLC is awesome. It's great for metal/metal contact surfaces and reducing friction wear.
    I know a guy who got a pew Ionbond (brand name but still a DLC), back in 2009 and 15 years later, with about 5k rounds per year, it still looks almost new. Even the high wear surfaces like slide rails and barrel hood, it's like a polish, rather than worn to bare metal.

      Same here for the lost part, the only Spyderco that the coating came off from was my first pm2 however I used it at work a to cutting anything and everything so that may have been part of the reason it came off when I used it to open that can up. My Kershaw knockout has opened up a couple cans plus a bunch of other stuff and it’s still in Tac 👌🍻🍻

    Yeah I mean you can say what you want about the quality of knives made overseas but the knife industry really has become a global market. There are several China based knife companies that aren't playing around anymore. I mean they are producing knives with high end powder metals, like S45VN, and laying down heat treatment well into the 60+ HRC.
