You were not the only one to love Windows RT and to miss an RT device.... Mine was a Surface 2, as I could not stand the steep kickstand of the surface pro 1 and RT and the Tegra 4 was quite a bit faster than the 3, plus the 1080p screen and the USB 3.0, but the experience was similar. I really enjoyed this device and was sad to see it become less and less functional with time (apps not updated anymore or even removed remotely). I sold the device a few years ago to a friend, but I have fond memories of it... Thanks for this video!

Nice! I upgraded from the RT to the Pro 2 since I needed a desktop program for school, definitely miss the 8 experience though. Thanks for the comment!

@@innoiso I moved to the pro 3, but I kept both, the surface 2 was for youtube and leisure, the pro 3 for work and on the go. The pro 3 died recently. I also got the surface 3, but that one had the battery budging after a couple of years, so not much luck, now the only surfaces I use are the book 2 and 3 (and I have a couple of unused keyboards, btw I saw you posted a video about keyboards, I'll go and watch it)

Loved this video!!n (I posted this comment on the music cover video, but i is still valid here and I thought I would repost it!).
This was sooooooooo good. The level of excitement was amazing - I have m RT right here and still works. The RT was an extraordinary machine. It was a windows answer the iPad which simply didn't exist before. It had just as good build quality, but it could do real work. People forget that the iPad was not designed for real work back then, but the windows devices were. The downfall of the RT was that it did ALMOST everything and almost everything well. It was small and so very cute. I used to carry it around in my cargo trouser pocket. It was a fully-fledged PC when you wanted it to be and a windows machine when you needed that. I loved it. Since that machine, I have always had a surface device. Never went back.
This video was so unique - Thanks so much for making it.
Looking forward to Surface Pro 9. (I just got a Pro 8, so hmmm- we shall see if we stick with 8, it goes to 9). Battery life will probably be the deciding factor. Well done again with this vid.

I won one in a competition but barely used it. Wish the MS Store had become a bigger success, because then the Windows RT OS wouldn't have been a limiting factor.
Now that Windows 8.1 is end-of-life it's even worse. No updates, no app store. Microsoft basically abandoned the ARM32 platform.
I'm now working through the steps to install Linux on it, with a jailbreak. See if I can give this oldie some new life as a smarthome dashboard.

As a long time mac user, I and like many others had written off the Surface RT as a failure and the death of MS. I remember all the memes at the time. Most companies would have given up and moved on. 10 years later I have a SP7 to replace my ancient mac. There is nothing else that runs a desktop OS with pen and touch. One device that is portable and does as much as possible.

My local mall had a Microsoft store and an Apple store as well! I remember checking out the RT and being really impressed but, sadly I went to the internet for advice, then to the Apple store for an iPad Mini and years later an 11" MacBook. I never went all in on Apple and so while they make great devices, I ultimately get frustrated as they don't play well with others. Eventually I got a Surface Pro 7, but to me it was just too big as a tablet. I tried a 2 in 1 Chromebook, a cheap, but traditional clam shell Windows laptop, and in May of 2022 I got a Surface Go 3.with an i3. I absolutely love it in the way that described the RT it's small, portable, opens my apps, runs Office, and unlike any other tablet Surface has more than 1 port. Great review video and it took some time, but Microsoft definitely was onto something when they devised the Surface.

It's too bad you didn't pull the trigger on the Surface RT but then again maybe you would have ended up disappointed and not loving the Go 3! Glad you found your way!

Im starting to wonder if i may have used a Surface RT at school without realising it (back in 2015 or 2016)
All i know is they were Surface devices, with Windows 8.1 or equivalent
The user accounts were weird as well, the devices were not linked to the school domain, there were two user accounts, “Student” and “Admin”

Very good video, thanks! When you are discussing why a slightly slower device was winning by its capability to do it all, it got me now with the go3 i3 device; not so speedy but you can do anything anywhere. I was dreaming of an RT back in time, but I just didn't have the bucks back then. Thanks again for this review/ history video.

Thanks for watching! Yeah, I was really lucky to be able to afford it, it took quite a bit of my savings. Glad you were able to learn a little bit in the process. The Go 3 is an awesome device.

ahhh what a perfect topic, really looking forward to this.... I run win 8.1 in VMware on my surface pro 6 (running win 11)... it's super laggy but i dont care, i love win 8.1 on surface, such a shame support ends in a few months (I also run it on my gaming PC with touch screen and it flys!)

I had the surface pro (instead of RT) at the time and absolutely loved it, despite its flaws... but it hindsight it was as much about Win 8 being purpose built for tablets that made the experience so great. I agree with you that Win 8 gestures are leaps beyond what anyone else is doing.... I have an ipad pro (10.1) and frankly find the home screen boring, same with android... Win 11 is better than 10 but i still prefer running win 8.1 on vmware on my pro 6 that native win 11..... and metro UI is by far the nicest looking home screen. The bold colour contrasts and different app sizes really make it "pop"! I didnt know about surface pro 9 until this video, looking forward to your covering the event, was considering getting a pro 8 (16gig for better VMware performance) but will wait for the 9 instead.

    • @innoiso
      @innoiso  Рік тому

That's pretty awesome that you're still getting the 8.1 experience through VMWare. Do the gestures still work?
