And to think, some people thought Cyberpunk's vibe would be best matched with "retro outrun synthwave" lmao Don't get me wrong, there's some solid synthwave out there, but the retro stuff specifically? I just think of corny, generic, "80s inspired" desktop wallpapers of DeLoreans with basic neon colors when I hear most retro synthwave. It's nostalgia-fueled, easy-listening music for those afraid of experimenting with the dials on their synth; one of the safest genres of electronic. A cyberpunk world that uses retro synthwave to set its tone is usually a goofy parody in my experience (Kung Fury is the movie that comes to mind there, for me) I think most people that relate it to Cyberpunk just haven't seen what kind of cyberpunk Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk really is: gritty, visceral, dirty, dehumanizing, hopeless, war-torn... the Nine Inch Nails vibe fits ten times better than some lame, cheesy Gunship song.
