    Great idea. The only problem is that the 3/8" dowel is a pretty small target to hit even with predrilling the screw hole.

      Hey Kyle,
      Thank ya! A good tape measure, steady hand, and you're good to go. It's not as bad as it seems.

    I'd probably go with a bigger dowel.

      Hey Mike,
      3/8 works great so 1/2 would work too. I'd think any smaller the 3/8 wouldn't be a good idea and any larger than 1/2 would have diminishing returns.
      Thanks for watching!

    Pretty cool, I've never seen that method. Couldn't you just drill at a diagonal and glue a dowel in both of the boards?

    • @thelarewsdo
      @thelarewsdo  Рік тому +2

      Hey,
      You could, but the glue is the only thing holding it together. A few good rains or freeze and thaw cycles will zap the glue. Using dowels in that way works great for interior projects though.

    or just screw into the cross grain board instead... pocket hole style.

    • @thelarewsdo
      @thelarewsdo  Рік тому

      Hey,
      Yeah, pocket holes could work if you have the kreg jig. It'd be a curious test, but I'd bet that the screw into the hardwood dowel will produce a stronger connection and your fastener isn't exposed to as much moisture and soil.

      I tried that, even used the bigger jig and screws made for deck construction and it did not hold very well. I like this idea better but would probably go to a 1/2-inch dowel.

  • @zardiw

    Or just use a longer screw...............Deck screws go up to 4+ inches.............Z

      Hey Z,
      Yep, there are multiple roads that lead to success. A 5" spax screw would have held, but where's the lesson in that? Plus this allows you to achieve a solid anchor with a standard size screw.
      Thanks for watching!
