Jamal - It brought tears to my old eyes to see you hear this for the first time. This is the music that formed my soul as a teenager. Your reaction to it was much as mine was as I listened to it alone over and over with headphones in my bedroom. I wondered then, how could this be so perfect. 50 years later and it's still perfect. I'm so glad you got the chance to hear it. The song was short as most songs were back then for radio play - that's why people bought albums - you should listen to the whole album as it was intended to be heard.
Lest we forget to thank the late-great Cass Elliott for introducing Graham Nash to Stephen Stills because she knew he was the definite third voice they needed. God Bless you Cass🙏💕👌💕🙏

This was the song that brought them together. Stills was on his own with Buffalo Springfield having broken up,Crosby was leaving The Byrds and they were already trying to do stuff together with just the two of them. But they knew it needed a little something more. Nash was looking for something beyond what he was getting out of being in The Hollies. They all were part of the Laurel Canyon scene and at someone or another's house (the parties and shindigs jumped all over the place there...Zappa's house,Peter Tork from The Monkees place,wherever...) Nash happened to be around when Stills and Crosby were working on this. He listened in,asked them to play it again and after the second time said something like,"Please don't think I'm crazy,but could you play it one more time?" And this time he jumped in and sang along. According to the way Nash recounts it,and Stills has said the same,they just sat there in silence for a minute,because the KNEW....this was it. Never looked back. Drugs,personal stuff,egos and all that other kinda crap kept CSN,and later CSNY,from being able to be around each other altogether for any long stretches of time. But when they were...magic happened. Pure magic.

The first words my husband ever spoke to me directly was after this tune played on the radio. He said "Most melodious tune" I was 15 he was 17 . That was 32 years ago. Love at first sight. Both the guy and the tune.

Best love song ever. This song has it all: alliteration, imagery, rhyme, harmony, abandonment, engulfment, and the ability to be a love song with zero cheesiness. It's the epitome of longing. I love this song, always have, and it's one I love to sing with my sister and my mother, who is a long time vocal instructor.

Murray, you got it partly right. Now, I consider myself a bit of an expert on these guys. I've loved them since I first heard/saw them when I was 12yrs old. That was 54 yrs ago. Now, even the guys dont agree on the actual details. Crosby and Nash say they were at Joni's house, and Stephen says it was Mama Cass Elliot's. Well, about 30yrs ago, they all were saying Cass's house. And I believe that version. Cass had invited Stephen and David over to meet Graham Nash. She was the brain behind this thing. I think she had an idea of what she was instigating. So, Stills tells the others about this song he'd written, would they like to hear it? And of course they said yes. He played them "Carry On" and David started harmonizing with Stills. After Cros and Stills played it the 2nd time, Nash said "sing it one more time" and this time he added his voice. That was the magic moment when they all just stared at each other, open mouthed. As Nash tells it, he said that was the moment they all 3 knew what they were going to be doing for the next few years. And CSN has dedicated every album to Cass because she brought them together. That's why I believe it WAS at Cass's house. So, anyway, there you have the correct story! Cool, huh? I love it! Peace!

The song "Wooden Ships" would be a great choice. The story goes the song was written and composed by David Crosby, Paul Kantner (founder of Jefferson Airplane ), and Stephen Stills on a sailing trip. Pretty much any version is good but if you have the Jefferson Airplane Volunteer cut it is all three performing the song together.

This has got to be one of my top ten songs ever. I've loved it practically my entire life, and I'm 57 now. Their harmonies can't be beat. They were nearly magical together.
I feel like we are all very very lucky and blessed to have such amazingly excellent songs like this, I truly wish that today's music had more meaning and heartfelt music like this. To think where we'd be without the 60's through the 80's music. Being 24 years old I wish more people around my age would see it how the rest of us do.

Same here! My dad had a constant stream of music playing throughout my childhood. Whether it was the reel to reel or his record player, CSN(Y) was always first in the lineup. About 6 months after he passed, my mom took me and my sibs to their concert. I was a teenager then, and it's still one of my favorite shows (after seeing more than 100 through the years)! My friend got me on to CSNY and CSN about 10 years ago in my early 20's and I never looked back. The first time I heard this song it blew my mind and I felt the way you looked. Every time I hear it, it stirs emotions without fail. It was such a pleasure to see you experiencing the things I did and reminded me, once again of those early days of my own music discoveries.
Lol- we read and listened to this in my class today as an example of alliteration. Imagine my surprise to see Jamal’s face up there as a suggested video. I resisted the urge to play Jamal not having previewed the video ahead of time.

Man, one of the most blissful moments of my life was being able to witness these three gentlemen singing into one microphone, Stephen Stills playing the acoustic guitar. One of those moments that reminds you how lucky you are to be alive.
@@JDKrug lionel trains are about the only thing that I agree with Niel Young about. He is an incredible artist and has followed his own muse throughout his career and has often dragged use along kicking and screaming. My current favorite is "Old Man" as I get old it is even more poignant.
Just about everything they ever did together is the same mellifluous harmony. And Graham Nash is one of the finest songwriters that ever graced the world. Stephen Stills is right there with him. And David Crosby, for all his personal issues, carried the soul of the group. They are, and were, the greatest harmony group ever.

This song has played my entire life (I was born in '71), my mother's eyes would fill with tears at times when she listened to this. All of my life, this song is one of those handful we all have that literally forces you to stop & listen, to every harmonized word.
As you appreciate harmony, one of the early tight harmony groups is The Everly Brothers. True brothers who I was told made their harmonizing so natural. Huge success. Walk Right Back &. Regarding that couch: The great music photographer Henry Diltz hurriedly took that photo of the boys right before the album came out and before the band even had a name. This was at a random abandoned house. They chose this photo for the album cover but realized they were aligned wrong by name from from left to right. They went back to redo the photo a few days later to correct it and the house had been demolished - so they stuck with this.

The three members were well established musicians from other bands in earlier in the sixties. Crosby was in The Byrds, Stills in Buffalo Springfield and Nash was in the hollies. Amazing stuff!

So sad that the band members had such a bad falling out they can't even talk about what happened. I love them so much; they've been a household name for two generations, so it's heartbreaking that they will never play again. I was lucky enough to see them in concert with my mom, don't remember the year but I may have still been a teenager, which would have put it in the early 90s.
Neil Young left his wife of decades, Pegi, for Daryl Hannah. Daryl was once with Jackson Browne and when they broke up she accused him of abuse. David said things so nasty about Daryl that none of the others wanted anything further to do with him

Same here! My dad had a constant stream of music playing throughout my childhood. Whether it was the reel to reel or his record player, CSN(Y) was always first in the lineup. About 6 months after he passed, my mom took me and my sibs to their concert. I was a teenager then, and it's still one of my favorite shows (after seeing more than 100 through the years)! My friend got me on to CSNY and CSN about 10 years ago in my early 20's and I never looked back. The first time I heard this song it blew my mind and I felt the way you looked. Every time I hear it, it stirs emotions without fail. It was such a pleasure to see you experiencing the things I did and reminded me, once again of those early days of my own music discoveries.

Man, one of the most blissful moments of my life was being able to witness these three gentlemen singing into one microphone, Stephen Stills playing the acoustic guitar. One of those moments that reminds you how lucky you are to be alive.

@@JDKrug lionel trains are about the only thing that I agree with Niel Young about. He is an incredible artist and has followed his own muse throughout his career and has often dragged use along kicking and screaming. My current favorite is "Old Man" as I get old it is even more poignant.

They're so good at harmonizing, they almostv sound like one voice.
Simply put, one of the top 20 songs in history. Absolutely gorgeous, and gets me choked up every time I listen to it.
Just about everything they ever did together is the same mellifluous harmony. And Graham Nash is one of the finest songwriters that ever graced the world. Stephen Stills is right there with him. And David Crosby, for all his personal issues, carried the soul of the group. They are, and were, the greatest harmony group ever.

Such a beautiful song with the saddest lyrics, yet, like the title implies, hopeful, all at the same time. This song has played my entire life (I was born in '71), my mother's eyes would fill with tears at times when she listened to this. All of my life, this song is one of those handful we all have that literally forces you to stop & listen, to every harmonized word.

As you appreciate harmony, one of the early tight harmony groups is The Everly Brothers. True brothers who I was told made their harmonizing so natural. Huge success. Walk Right Back &. Devoted to You are my favorites. Graham Nash ads so much to CSN and CSNY harmony. Unique voice quality. But they're all brilliant.

Saw Crosby & Nash perform this years ago in an open air theater setting. Their harmonies are ethereal.
Their harmonies still give me goosebumps after all these years.
Regarding that couch: The great music photographer Henry Diltz hurriedly took that photo of the boys right before the album came out and before the band even had a name. This was at a random abandoned house. They chose this photo for the album cover but realized they were aligned wrong by name from from left to right. They went back to redo the photo a few days later to correct it and the house had been demolished - so they stuck with this.

That is just such a beautiful song...The Harmony is second to none....One of my favorite songs ...and there are many from this group which is among the top 5 great groups in my book.
Was fortunate enough to see them at Woodstock, I was 16 and hitchhiked from Indiana. This was their second concert.

The three members were well established musicians from other bands in earlier in the sixties. Crosby was in The Byrds, Stills in Buffalo Springfield and Nash was in the hollies. Amazing stuff!

So sad that the band members had such a bad falling out they can't even talk about what happened. I love them so much; they've been a household name for two generations, so it's heartbreaking that they will never play again. I was lucky enough to see them in concert with my mom, don't remember the year but I may have still been a teenager, which would have put it in the early 90s.
Neil Young left his wife of decades, Pegi, for Daryl Hannah. Daryl was once with Jackson Browne and when they broke up she accused him of abuse. David said things so nasty about Daryl that none of the others wanted anything further to do with him
