    I like how they call the cards "desirable" and "collectible" because they can't talk about secondary market value. Meanwhile, the players are constantly choosing between guaranteed card value and the chance to win prizes with a deck of cheap playables.

    • @catascopic9542
      @catascopic9542 6 років тому

      Wait, why can't they?

    • @lll9107
      @lll9107 6 років тому +13

      Probably because they would get sued in many countries for illegal gambling (aka booster packs). They very carefully construct news sets and the distribution of the rarities to give a specific EV of each pack/box/case. They likely have a very good idea of the expected value of each card before it's even released. If this was acknowledged, it would basically be gambling. Unlike baseball cards which have/had values that changed with the sport player's performance, these cards can be engineered to have a guaranteed value.
      Wizards themselves admitted even cards of the same rarity in the same set aren't printed equally. It's obvious gambling if they were too open about the value of their cards. They will use words like the "power" of a card and such.

    • @catascopic9542
      @catascopic9542 6 років тому +4

      I can better understand them talking that way about new cards, but with cards from the original expansion, it seems like they don't really have anything on the line anymore. Obviously if there's legal issues, it makes sense, though.

      Pretty positive they didn't get to keep cards. So no... they weren't making any choices more than "will this work in my deck".

    This was such an amazing event, but it also Highlights that they should really bring back Rochester drafts back for finals at GP's.
    Limited has such terrible viewer count on twitch, Rochester would help a tonne, it's so much better to watch when you can see everyones pick and see the actual draft strategy of the pod. Makes for such a better 'story' of the draft table.
    I know they got rid of it because it takes longer but if it was just for top 8's of major events, an extra 40 mins isn't going to matter.

      I don't know what the actually price on Two-Headed Giant of Forlys is, but back in the day (revised era) that was one of the more expensive and rare cards , as it was one of the initial dozen or so first wave of "discontinued" rare cards from the original set (as in they were in A/B/U but not Revised). I'd guess a pack fresh beta Two-Headed Giant could be worth like 1-2k if it's graded 9.0+.
      The next wave of discontinued cards (going from Revised -> 4th Ed.) were no where close to as valuable and no longer had the appeal of trying to get some of those original discontinued ones back then. Except for the dual lands, obviously, but even after it was announced that they weren't coming back they still didn't get expensive right away, since revised had a print run that was like 50-100x that of Alpha/Beta/Unlimited combined.. Sol Ring WOULD have been a big deal if it were rare and not uncommon (and especially if it were subsequently placed on the reserved list). The cards that mattered from that 2nd "discontinued" wave were mainly the dual lands, Sol Ring, Wheel of Fortune, Balance, Demonic Tutor, Vesuvan Doppleganger, Fork, Regrowth, Fastbond, Copy Artifact, Braingeyser, Clone, Demonic Hordes, ante cards - but yeah, they didn't get really expensive and/or sought-after like that initial group since the print run was sooo much higher (dual lands did but not for years).

    • @intuit13
      @intuit13 5 років тому

      The original pack of "discontinued" cards I'm referring to are like: Power9, Time Vault, Gauntlet of Might, Chaos Orb, Icy Manipulator, Forcefield, Lich, Two-Headed Giant of Forlys, Raging River, Sink Hole, Berserk, Jade Statue, Illusionary Mask, Cyclopean Tomb, Word of Command, Blaze of Glory, Natural Selection, etc. Those first 6 being the biggest deal, but Two-Headed Giant was kind of collectible for some reason so it was also kinda cool to have.

    The whole time I was sitting here, watching all these amazing/expensive cards get opened, waiting for a Sol Ring to be opened. Surprised not one person mentioned that. Was REALLY hoping to see one, as that was SUCH a hugely impactful card back then (since most ppl even in 1994/5 when I was playing did not have any power - although it's actually even more powerful than power9 a lot of the time). Very disappointed :(.

      Most GPs have History of Draft events these days where you can sign up to draft older sets. I don't think there's enough money in those sets to draw out the pros. I'd love to see it done for some other older sets. Maybe 4 packs each... Beta, Arabian, Antiquities, Legends. About the same number of cards... but with fewer basics.

    • @taptenmana3639

  • @mannyk1986
    @mannyk1986 5 років тому +1

    If wotc still have some beta packs left, I would like to recommend a better usage of those packs than to give them away to the pros. Insert them in cases, like one pack in a hundred cases, as a treasure. They’ll make much more money from that than showing off packs that the viewers cannot get.

      Bit more than that, only based on those 2 big money cards. I believe Beta Underground Sea is one of the 3-4 most expensive cards in the game (pack fresh - graded 9.5) can fetch 10k by itself I believe (without looking it up). I'm sure a graded 9.5 Beta Mox Emerald is gonna be over 5k as well. Not to mention all the other pack fresh cards he got (which, without really remembering what he took, must be worth another few thousand). Closer to 20-22k, imo. Once graded.
      EDIT: If either of those 2 end up being a 10.0 they could be worth an additional 3-5k (which they could be, even after playing with them, as long as he sleeves them instantly and shuffles/plays as carefully as humanly possible).

    • @intuit13
      @intuit13 5 років тому

      I just did a 2 second search for "beta underground sea" and the first one that I noticed was on ebay for 30k. Granted, I'm sure it won't actually get THAT much (at least atm), but it's for a pack fresh 9.5 quad++, which isn't too big of a stretch since these cards are all literally right from pack to sleeve. Truly pack fresh, graded Power (beta USea is definitely an unofficial "power" card in terms of price) are worth WAY more than ungraded "nm" much of the time.

    Why are basic lands being picked over any actual card? In a supposedly big event being played by "pros" with something on the line? I'd really like someone to state why this was happening here. It's like checking behind on the river with the nuts. You'd get removed from the event/tournament for collusion. What rationale was given by these players to be taking basic lands like 5th pick?

    Interesting hearing Forsythe rag on some of the old cards when this set is better than anything designed recently on top of the fact back then they were designing in a space of naivety and just winging it on the back of Garfields genius (mathematically and otherwise). Him and Rosewater at the helm it is no wonder the state modern sets are in design-wise.

    • @qikink1
      @qikink1 6 років тому +4

      It's an interesting time to have that opinion, given how widely Dominaria has been praised. Also objectively, there's no denying the mess some of these cards are from both a templating and gameplay perspective.

    • @fibonaccispagetti1107
      @fibonaccispagetti1107 6 років тому +2

      Irony, what is keeping Dominaria from the trash bin same as other recent sets for most people is the Garfield touch. Ha.
      And yes, some are a mess, see my comment you are replying to. Not denying it, I am saying it is interesting that Forsythe is talking down on them so much when as I said before "this set is better than anything designed recently on top of the fact back then they were designing in a space of naivety and just winging it on the back of Garfields genius (mathematically and otherwise)." They got it more correct the first time, with a few errors, but they were just winging it in uncharted territory. Modern sets have more issues and they have 25 years of experience designing behind them. This is my point, a sign of a need of change of leadership. Add on top of that in order for a set to sell, you need to bring in Garfield again (Dominaria) then this company is either nepotistic or not self aware.

      No, this is real magic. The brainlet standard format youre likely playing with kids on friday nights, and ugly sci fi borders on overcosted fantasy creatures is some sort of cheap TCG that just uses the old name.
