Nice review! I personally consider any finished Bourbon a no longer Bourbon, as the resulting product lost some of its original/classic Bourbon characteristics and gained new flavors. I’ve tested some of them and would always stick to the original.

Good point. I know they've created a specific category for finished whiskey to recognize it's kind of its own thing. Sometimes the way the finish highlights the whiskeys natural flavors is great...sometimes its not. Thanks for watching and cheers!

There's a finished bourbon, Penelope Rio, that sells for high dollars on the secondary that is said to be "finished" so extremely (with amburana and honey) that it doesn't even taste like bourbon anymore!

The local grocery just brought in an Elijah Craig Private Barrel 124.7 proof pick. So far I passed as the price was $79 and I noticed they still had 155 bottles left. I may purchase one but it seems the local bourbon community is not jumping on these. The color looks great and the proof is nice for a proof-head like myself, but I always thought the whole point of a store pick was to save the loyal customers a few dollars on some good whiskey. Another area of concern is "who" actually made this pick? Like I have no idea lol!
For the most part, my personal bourbon trend is to not buy overhyped, overpriced mediocre bourbon when I can get great bourbon at lower prices, so basically I'm looking for better values.
As far as finished whiskeys, I'm lucky to get a lot of samples. There's some really delicious finished bottles but I think the only ones I will purchase are try before I buy.

Yep, agreed. I've seen a lot of the ECBP picks around and they stay on shelves. And while I do like supporting local stores when they do a pick, sometimes it's pretty marked up and I struggle to make the buy. And there's plenty of affordable and available bottles out there to explore. Thanks for watching and cheers!

Interesting video. I’ve cut way back on finished whiskey as I feel like it’s a cheat. I make exceptions for double oak, second barrel, toasted barrel. The whole price thing has gotten completely out of control.

Have you seen what some of the producers are coming up with now for finishing: Finished in an X barrel that previously held Y. Like "bourbon that's been finished in a tequila barrel that previous to the tequila held wine"! And the bourbon, itself, is 2-4 year old MGP. For $80.

I honestly, am not sure how many age stated bottles have dropped the age statement outside of ECBP, but with the number of single barrels of EC at 9+ years that were out, it had to be expected.
I have given up on premium priced products for the most part. There isnt enough of a difference to the shelf bottles i like to justify paying the premium price dofference. My one caveat to that, my local liquor store pur Calumet 16 on sale for 99 bucks, so that is a no-brainer for me.
I discovered early in the finished whiskey craze that i wasnt a fan. There are a couple of double oaked products i like ok, Sagamore DO and Lucky 7 The Frenchman, thats my list. I have tired many other finishes, but i just dont like them, at least not enough to purchase them again at their price, nor do i feel the need to try something else along the same line.

Great analysis, especially considering”limited” edition bottles. I would like to have you keep buying them and reviewing them. So if they’re not worth the money in your view, I will save my money for some other bottle.

As far as age, I am more concerned with flavor. Special bottles can get way too expensive and flavored whiskey is a crap shoot , you never know what your going to get, for example Starlite, I've got the blackberry and it's syrup, put it on a desert.
    Cheers 🍻

Marketing is what is driving prices. They can put mediocre juice in nice bottles and throw whatever price they want on it and people will pay for it. It's all about clout for some people. Look at me and what I have. I have decided to limit myself to less than 100 a bottle and it has to be on the shelf anytime I want it.

I can totally understand that approach. Tons of really great options that are available and affordable. With the channel I get pulled into the hype myself sometimes, but the hunt can be fun. Hope you're enjoying a great pour right now. Cheers!
