  • How fantastic was Stakes? After discussing it for 35 minutes, I can still bring up tons more topics and dive into far more details - this review was barely breaking ground. You know something was a wonderful viewing experience when you’re having oodles of fun just thinking about it, and Adventure Time most certainly delivered with this amazing miniseries. Join me as I discuss all 8 episodes of Stakes and cover topics like Marceline’s backstory, new Adventure Time lore, Princess Bubblegum’s growth, the wacky yet fearsome vampires which need to be hunted down once again (Fool, Empress, Hierophant, Moon, and Vampire King), the knee-slapping comedy, and Marceline’s character traits and motivations.

    Actually she used the Vampire King's power of telekinesis, if you remember "Evicted", she lifted the picture with her mind to reveal the " 'M' for Marceline"

    If you remember in the first episode Marci is introduced in after she kicks out Finn and Jake they sing a house hunting song where it is said
    Oh, Marceline,
    Why are you so mean?
    Marceline: I'm not mean, I'm a thousand years old,
    And I just lost track of my moral code.
    After all of those traumatic experiences and isolation i can believe her facade would become warped with her vampire powers where she would make jokes but after being reintroduced to friends and society she starts to remember her old self and revert to her true nature which also explains her diary songs as well.

    I think Marceline's arc makes perfect sense. When she was introduced, she had been alone for a long time. She had probably grown jaded over the years due to the constant fear that people had towards her. When she met Finn and Jake they showed her a new view of humanity. Their constant morality was something that she viewed as young and foolish which is why she tries to trick Finn into doing things that he thinks is evil. She believes that his morality is a cover or that all good people are wrong. The more time she spends around Finn and Jake the more she misses her old good natured self which is what inevitably leads to her desire to become human again. Her hope in humanity was restored and what she saw as her evilness. I think a big theme with Marceline is that she wants to regain the blissful ignorance of youth, something that Finn symbolizes, something that was stolen from her in a number of ways.

    My headcanon is that the Marceline we meet in 'Evicted' is deeply depressed and just coming off the breakup with Ash, which was supposed to be her chance at a normal life, and this is why her brash facade was in such full swing at the time. It came with actions of dubious morality, cruel pranking, and manipulative behavior. I think if you see the way her relationship with Finn and Jake grows in those early episodes, from running them out of their homes in 'Evicted', pranking them in 'Henchman' and 'Go With Me', to rejecting her toxic friends in 'Heat Signature', and to gracefully accepting their apologies in 'Marceline's Closet', it becomes clear that Finn and Jake in all their childlike and loving nature have a healing effect on Marceline. It's a slow burn, but I think if you look at it in the context of a woman climbing out of a pit of self-hatred and into a headspace wherein she feels worthy of being loved again, her evolution as a character makes complete sense.
    Also, don't forget that Marceline was made a vampire around the age of twenty, which means that the last flashback occurs some 980 years before current events. That's a lot of time for a brain to get stupid about things.

      She might also be picking on them particularly hard because she knows they're friends of PBUBs and she's channeling some residual anger because she doesn't really seem to be back on speaking terms with Bubblegum until later when the mutual association with Finn & Jake gets them interacting again.

    Something I just realized...
    If Peppermint Butler was the one in charge of disposing of the gunk in the first place, and he was knowledgeable of Vamps in the first place....then why did he dispose of it so carelessly that the Vamps were able to come back? Does anyone think its possible that he allowed them to resurrect in the first place? When PB asks him what he did with the gunk, he never answers and it is left very vague. I mean, he certainly can be an evil little critter....

    Also at 4:01 Simon is referring to how he discovered how to summon Hudson Abadeer and what happened after was explained in Adventure Time: The Enchiridion & Marcy’s Super Secret Scrapbook!!!
    Spoilers:
    Marcy met some Werewolves (evolved from thylacines) and summoned Hudson; Hudson killed all of Marceline’s friends and then looks after her, at first Hudson is caring and loving and teachers her, but Marceline has trouble getting over killing her friends and once he eats her fries she freaks out and sends him back to the Nightosphere; after she then wonders Ooo in search of Simon and ends up at what would later be: Beautopia, she meets Schwablthe dog and then leaves and finds those humans.

    Maybe her jokes are subtle criticisms of herself more than jokes? If she viewed herself as a monster, maybe she liked to use morbid humor to remind herself of what she could do. Maybe I'm over reading it, but I've patronized myself through humor over things about myself that I don't really like, and I know some people do it too, so it comes off as what they were going for.

      +thevraptor I have yet to read it, so this review was constructed with just information we have from the episodes themselves. Seems like I really need to get around to getting a copy though! (Obviously arguments can be made about how canon side-materials and merch are, and people hold different standards as far as what they accept to be "canon", but Adam Muto using the phrase "closer to the show's canon" certainly does make me intrigued to read it. Muto is a clever guy though and uses phrases like "consistent with canon" rather than just declaring things as canon. )

    • @Strrouf
      @Strrouf 8 років тому +16

      +Uncivilized Elk I would absolutely recommend the books and graphic novels of Adventure Time, even if just for entertainment purposes. However, as you said, whether or not the merch is canon is debatable, one instance that comes to mind is a brief flashback of Simon's where he is designing a dungeon. The relevance of this particular flashback is that it is quite plain that Simon is early - mid way through becoming Ice King (as it is a graphic novel) and that he is doing it with Hudson Abadeer. This relates quite easily to your theory that Simon made Abadeer look after Marceline as he was still quite young in the flashback.

    • @Strrouf
      @Strrouf 8 років тому +14

      +Uncivilized Elk Also there is a graphic novel (Seeing Red) based entirely on Marceline's aquisition of her axe bass which pretty much matches perfectly with your theory so .... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ go figure

    I'm not entirely sure I agree with Marceline's personality not messing well with her early character and here is why: You mention that it makes sense for her joking nature to be a facade in order to make friends but what if you look at it a bit differently.
    Think of Marcelines's early character as not being a facade to make friends but to keep people at a healthy distance. In her early character I think she may have wanted people to fear her, at least enough for them to stay away from her. The reason she would joke about turning Jake into a zombie is BECAUSE she understands the pain and fear. She had felt like she was a danger to the community that left her. I do not think it a stretch to think Marceline was afraid of getting close to others for the same reason, she thought she would be a danger to them.
    This only changes when Finn and his friendly nature makes Marceline regain that sense of community she lost and that is what brings about Marceline's want to be mortal again. She is feeling closer to people than she has in years, she has reconnected with Simon and Princess Bubblegum. It is because of these connections that she is no longer comfortable with being the vampire queen and hence why she would want to devamp herself.
    In summary she could have easily felt comfortable and boastful early on because she felt alone, the power of being the vampire queen being really her only comfort in her loneliness. Think of her vampirism like a security blanket. However, after Finn made the effort to connect with her, she began to let the facade fade, which lead to her reconnecting with Simon and Bubblegum, which lead to her wanting to return to the point of her life where she was mortal. She has not felt this sense of community since she was mortal, and part of her may feel that she can not have that feeling and her vampirism at the same time. Through the events of stakes she that she can have both at the same time. She was returned to her previous personally, have kept her vampirism, and has discovered that she is not a danger to her friends. She finally has fully dropped the facade.

      The Fool seems to be quite in denial as an airhead, the Empress directs Anger at Simon, the Hierophant Bargains and negotiates, the Moon symbolises Depression or Apathy with Acceptance surrounding the Vampire King.
      Marceline undergoes these stages throughout the story. In proper order, she tried to Deny her vampireness and proceeds to assert Denial when killing the Fool, rages in Anger at the Empress, Bargains with the Hierophant, is thrown into death like state of Depression by the poison and in turn throws everyone around her into Depression as well, the whole Moon encounter is depressing. Then Vampire King's theme is Acceptance, and after his essence escapes, Marceline dives into apathy again, only for Simon to finally kick her to take control again and Accept her fate. So... who are we grieving?

    Marceline has found more reason to fight after meeting Finn and Jake. After centuries of living in fear and torment, peace was nearly upon the Land of Ooo as life begin to flourish in many ways.
    Encountering Finn was a membrance of the human life in the past. Also, PB and Simon whom she shares a long and deep connection with also will her inner hearts to be expressed. This emotion and sentimental experience has been explored throughout Adventure Time featuring her and she gained more passion rather than rebellion.
    Marceline's decision to go back to normal was to live a more meaningful life especially during a time of peace and put an end to her torment. She also trust PB in making the world a better place because of her natural compassion and intelligence of nature.
    Early series of Adventure is just scratching the surface of persona of each character. Everyone adapt to each situation differently, some cope well, some hide, some descent into madness, but the strong will remain true to their soul to the very end.

    The "Stakes arc" actually got me to like and appreciate Marceline. Because for the longest time- I just didn't like her as a character.
    In addition. I am sure Marceline's (as you describe it) drastic personality and character growth could be due to Rebecca Sugar (creator of Marceline) leaving to do her own show, and thus the ATcrew was respectful enough to put Marceline in the back until the one who knows her best could return to tell her story.
    In a way, this worked but unfortunately it gave people the impression that Cartoon Network was responsible for this when really they give ATcrew a lot of leash.

    Can't help but notice you forgot something. The humans were probably the people that lead to people like Susan Strong. Notice the gills and such, and the fact that the people left on a boat. Also that the fish people had animal hats, and that the fish people are of course the closest thing to people besides Finn. Maybe they specifically left on a boat to retreat, but chances are (Crap, I forgot his name) is an elemental of earth, but he sunk them. This is probably more confusing than it sounds in my head.

      Susan seems to be a cyborg though, and there were humans as of 16 years ago (I mean Finn was born). I don't think the humans became fish people personally (though it's not out of the realm of possibility). Since we have that flashback of baby Finn on a boat, it seems like the humans were traveling across the ocean (possibly leaving that continent they set out toward back in Stakes) and eventually Finn ended up stranded in the Land of Ooo and found by Joshua and Margaret.

    I somewhat disagree with your take on Marcy's development, she sung from very early on that she wasn't evil and simply lost track of her moral code. Being a vampire is want keeps her from aging so during the events with the humans she was probably around 19. She's been a vampire drifter for almost 1000 years hanging out with ghost and other monsters that she knew she couldn't hurt but at the same time couldn't connect to on mug of an emotional level, so before she reconnected with PB and made friends with Finn and Jake her moral compass was at an all time low.

      I agree with this completely and feel like it was an oversight on this video.

    • @uncivilizedelk
      @uncivilizedelk  8 років тому +35

      It wasn't an oversight, I simply think there's certain types of jokes that Marceline wouldn't pull now that we see how she views her own backstory.
      Marceline has made some bad friends and dated at least one asshole (Ash), but even prior to meeting Finn and Jake, she had seriously strong emotional ties to some aspects of her past (she broke up with Ash due to him selling Hambo the teddy bear after all). Everything we know about Marceline does suggest she holds on to the past strongly (she wasn't able to forgive her dad after the last straw which was him eating her fries in a time where food was probably exceedingly rare), so the "just lost track of my moral code" bit doesn't work for me in regards to the vampire stuff. It excuses Marceline pulling mean pranks, sure, it excuses her making others homeless and those sorts of things - that's fine. In fact all that makes sense and fits fine into her character. But when it comes specifically the vampire-related aspects and joking about turning people into zombies, that feels like something she would never do whether her moral code slipped or not now that we know her history from Stakes and how no-nonsense she is about the subject.

    • @ThePerfectGroom
      @ThePerfectGroom 8 років тому +23

      +Uncivilized Elk I see your reasoning but it's not uncommon for people to use what they're most depressed about to act like they have no meaning.
      It gets to a point where she doesn't want to rely on anyone hence why she pushes everyone away and acts like everything is alright.

    • @uncivilizedelk
      @uncivilizedelk  8 років тому +11

      ThePerfectGroom
      Again, I could see that being the case if not for Hambo. If she ended up not caring about Hanbo, or did care for him but when Ash got rid of him pretended not to and put on the façade that it wasn't actually a big deal, then I can see her also being capable of making cruel jokes towards others that parallel experiences that have traumatized her and tore the people she cared about away from her.
      But since she is so emotionally connected to her past, I can't personally see her crossing such a line whether her moral code slipped or not.
      Obviously, it comes down to difference in opinions and perspectives to a degree, but I'm merely elaborating on this not being an oversight or anything of that sort. I just hold a different opinion.

    • @Cangeltibon
      @Cangeltibon 8 років тому +22

      Uncivilized Elk In the end it is just a matter of opinion and I love your take on Adventure Time. But her joking about turning someone doesn't really seems too far for me. She never intended to turned them, she is widely known as the Vampire Queen and for most of her existence, like with any other major power, people either feared her or wanted to join her/be like her, so Finn and Jake were probably not the first to ask. For the first few people I could see her angrily and hurtfully turning them away and after a while it turned into taunting. Her resolve never to turn someone, like her love for Hambo and her hurt over her fries hasn't changed but her approach over the centuries has.

  • @reincarnatedleaf1926
    @reincarnatedleaf1926 8 років тому +41

    After dealing with a lot of the abandonment issue and taking souls and minds of the vampire she slayed, Marceline became rebellious. This start to show after her dad ate her fries. Marceline ran away from her dad to become independent and explore her own path as she started dating untrustworthy magic guy(inconsiderate), hanging with Ghosts(sadistic), taking everything in as a joke as life perishes around her.
    Early episode depict Marceline as sarcastic and joking to lighten the emotional burden she has been through. This is natural for the mind to heal itself from distress and to call back to harmony. Stakes miniseries has put Marceline to a higher level of understanding and becoming more in terms with herself, life, and her love ones. She is more at peace and harmony compare to the early depictions. This is consistent as it parallels human nature.
    Life isn't always mathematical or have to seem logical. Comprehending emotion is more than meets the naked eye.
    This is why most people love Marceline as a character despite the low amount of screentime compare to other character. Women and men that share the same struggles and passion with Marceline can understand the rhyme and the reason Marceline expressed throughout the whole Adventure Time series.

    I mean you can chalk up Marceline's inconsistent character development to her just slowing opening up more to Finn and Jake. Also, in heat signature she was showing off to her ghosts friends, so she probably wasn't going to get into her tragic backstory right in that moment. I mean you can tell the events in stakes weren't planned from the start, but I think it flows fairly well with her original character traits. I mean she sings about losing her moral code in "evicted", and perhaps being around Finn and Jake help her gain it back hence her character changing so much in later episodes.

  • @isabelluxemburg5795
    @isabelluxemburg5795 6 років тому +6

    Marceline's personality at the start of the series actually makes a lot of sense though with regards to the timeline of her relationship with P-Bubs. We don't Know much about the exact timeline of their past except for roughly when PB was with Mr. Creampuff, except that they used to hang out, but by the start of the series, they'd had a falling out.
    Marcy isn't just a foil to Bonny at series start -- they actively butt heads until "What Was Missing" and it along with others where the two characters are featured paint a picture that they used to be cool before. Before what, you may ask? Before Marceline started acting like a dingus and wasn't being emotionally honest -- with PB, with her friends, or even with herself. A thousand years is a long time to come to terms with the kind of trauma Marceline was put through -- and clearly she isn't as over it as she wanted to be. So my guess is that early series Marceline was putting on an act and taking it way too far and being a complete asshole because it's just easier to give in and stop caring.
    And it's only when Finn and Jake enter her life that cracks start to form in her facade. The end of "Evicted" shows that as far as she may joke, it's all just a joke, Marcy's true good nature is revealed in "Henchman," being forced by Finn to deal with her past in "It Came from the Nightosphere," realizing her jokes are going too far in "Heat Signature," all leading up to true emotional honesty bleeding through the cracks in her facade in "What Was Missing" -- Marceline's traumatized past may make it seem odd that she would be the way she was at the beginning, but I've known plenty of traumatized people coping with traumas in strange and counterproductive seeming ways.
    Everything leading up to "What Was Missing" had her perfectly poised for much needed character growth explored in "Marcy and Simon" and other episodes.
    "Sky Witch" sees Marcy and Bonnibel working together and being close again and "Red Starved" has her forced to deal with vampire instincts and truly endangering her friends (with the fun callback gag of Marcy *actually* "drinking the red" from PB's "pretty pink face" to no long term ill effect on Bonny) and then "Varmints" has Bonny and Marcy coming back to a place of emotional intimacy and reconciling what went wrong in their relationship before series start.
    And then Stakes is her finally, after a thousand years, finally coming to terms with and dealing with her traumas in healthier ways.
    Talk about a redemption arc.

      Might also want to recall that most if not all of the humans remaining on the continent were eaten or enslaved by non-vampiric entities such as the rainicorns and probably others, and this may have re-traumatized Marceline and given the incentive to stop caring about humans and about anyone or anything, not even giving respect to her own traumas until Finn came in and messed with that flow.

    I think marcy didn't grow up in the mini series or after she became a vampire the second time, I think she grew up through out the entire 7 seasons. in the second episode we we her reminiscing about her past with bubblegum, perhaps this lead her to look back at her life and realise she has lived long enough to drift from the person she once loved (as a friend or romantically), this makes her want mortality, and to want to grow up, to develop stable relationships that don't change, by the end of stakes she has looked at the person she used to be and seen how she has grown and developed this then, she now also sees that although herself and bubblegum have changed they are right where they left each other, she has grown up to become a more caring person with more complex ideas of morality ( season 2 episode 26, she becomes more moral to save Finn and Jake, and in every other episode she's in we see that she is not totally moral, like she is portrayed in the flash backs, she is striking a balance between being good and having fun), she has learnt that it is not bad to rely on people (season 1 episode 22, Finn saves her life, series 4 episode 6 they again save her plus in this mini series they help out alot), she has learnt to understand others plight (season 7 episode 2, she displays empathy pb) and she has learnt you can hold onto the past with out letting it harm you ( season 2 episode 1 reconnecting with her dad, season 4 episode 24 reconnecting with the ice king whilst knowing it can't be Simon in the end plus this series reconnecting with her past before being a vampire) these are all very grown up things and I think during this mini series she learnt that she could grow up with out getting older and that she already has.

    I think that while Marceline had the greatest vendetta against The Empress, The Moon had the greatest vendetta against Marceline. In the 2015 Spooktacular (which was designed to be a prequel to Stakes and came out before it, which is very interesting as it has The Moon's official design among other things), we see Marceline's fight against her, and I believe that The Moon was horrified and shocked when she was beaten. She seems invincible, so it makes sense that she'd want to destroy the only perceived threat to her existence.
    EDIT: I also think that some of the inconsistencies with Marceline's past could have to do with repressed memories. (Of course, this is all retcons, but let me keep talking.) I've found that in the past I'll act differently than I did beforehand, thanks to remembering things from the past that I'd originally ignored because of their traumatizing nature. I think that her finally reconnecting with Simon and realizing he didn't want to leave her ended up breaking a barrier she'd put up ages and ages ago, and it gradually wears down as time goes on, until we get to Stakes. (Of course, your points are really valid, and I agree with them--but I figured I could give my two cents.)

    I actually think that old vs. new Marcelline works perfectly well if you look at it as a rebellious teenager vs. someone in their mid twenties. Marcy joking around about turning people and all of her behaviour at the start of the series could very much be her thinking "If people are going to treat me like a monster there's no point in trying not to be", which is something that a lot of young people go through. But yeah it definitely wasn't planned from the start, as was I feel a lot of the later seasons lol

    Another notable thing about the Vampire King's potential symbolism is the fact that he mentions a Chariot (the seventh tarot card) and how he's not so fond of the Wheel near the end of his speech to Marceline (which I believe to he a fairly major character defining moment for him). "Spill my guts or face the unknown. Either way I will not bite, for turning you would subjugate me, to the Wheel of Fortune, and I am a king, not a hampster. All of the vampires relates with marceline's character.
    The Fool: The one which gave Marceline the flying ability. Marcelien often had a goofy attitude ever since she got the powers from the useless one.
    The High Priestess: An empty, priestlike one, which gave Marcy her empty, attitude at times. She gets stuck with manipulation and actuslly needed her friends' help for this one. Which also gave her the eye hipnotism ability.
    The Hierophant: The OLD FASHIONED vampire, stuck in his old self; the mushroom war and more for Marceline which makes one of her characters of being stuck in her past. Which gave Marceline her incredible vampire abilities of transformation.
    The Moon: The complete Vampire, a true vampire with its crazy abilities, a vampire's true nature. The Moon gave Marceline her vampiric healing abilities, but not to the extent to the Moon.
    The King: the strongest, most abstract one, making Marceline just give up on herself like the King had.

    It's possible Marcy spent along time as a vampire, so she put up a facade for so long that she removed herself from her issues. The seasons leading up to now also had a lot of development for Marcy. Getting closer to Ice King being one of them. We don't see how they started making time to hang out, but suddenly her and PB are going to dinner with him (I don't remember the order of eps at this point in time, but still it can seem out of place). So rather than it being out of nowhere it was too subtle? They could have spent some time giving us more hint episodes showing Marcy thinking about the past, but for me Stakes made sense. That Marcy had been thinking about her past again after all these years, and to just have it all condensed in a mini series. There wouldn't have been any need to throw it in our faces when we already had the episode Remember Me. Her jokes also remind me a lot of Amethyst from SU. Self-deprecating humor is common in anyone who's had a rough time, myself included.

    I like this guys stuff, but I don’t think he knows the definition of “retcon”. A retcon is when something in a show is changed in a later season- like if at one point a character had blue hair and then in the next season the writers write in that it was red and had always been red- that’s a retcon. What this guy calls “retcons” are all callbacks to moments that might not have had any significance at the time.

    I do agree that Marceline's transition throughout was likely an unplanned retcon of her character into something they thought would be a better backstory, but her making light of something that had been traumatic for her in the past isn't something entirely unheard of. She could've been using the jokes she made about it as a coping mechanism to convince herself and everyone else that what happened wasn't as bad as it actually was, especially since it happened almost one thousand years prior (maybe the mental vault isn't something exclusive to Finn). That said, there really isn't a way I can see to reconcile her talking about the vampire powers in Heat Signature with how she actually got them.

    One thing about Marcy's character is, she's morbid. And moreso, she knows how her powers work, and is almost overconfident in her abilities. In addition, her 1000 years of life as a trickster could have lead her to break down those barriers and be more open to such morbid jokes. Hell, before she met Finn and Jake, her moral code had almost completely broken down, as she said herself all the way back then. In a way, she was becoming what she feared the most without realizing it. Finn and Jake helped her regain her humanity step by step. As for her wanting to become mortal seemingly out of nowhere, it was prefaced with a relatively petty situation where she couldn't get her umbrella. We know she's petty. We know she's simple-minded at times, and makes big decisions without major thought. While it's poor reasoning on her part, that would make the events of stakes still loosely consistent with old marcy.

    Marceline used “the force” as you(and I) call it in “evicted” when she was showing her mark of ownership to Finn and jake, moving away the painting and the rock, but this may just be a need to explain this power cuz she mentions that her dad only gave her soul sucking skills and cuz that’s the only time she used it

    I kinda assume what he meant by "A Big Thing" was the Comet (you know the major event that happens every 1000 years, that got explained through out Season 6) & Marceline is a 1000 years old last time I checked so it would connect well if that's case it happen around the time after she got turned.

    There was one big wacky joke you missed in "Everything Stays". The ancient song that the humans have to sing so they won't forget their past is the theme song to "Mr. Belvadere," which was a dopey 80s sitcom. I mean, the song is eerily applicable to this miniseries, but I busted up laughing when they treated like it was their culture and heritage. It also kinda-almost feels like a callback to when Simon sang the theme song to "Cheers".
    EDIT: I think having it end where it began, it's different this time because Marceline got to choose her fate and grow a little. She's occasionally a self-loathing character and hanging around people who try to empathize with her and who call her on her bullshit forces her to actually face it a little (like in the song "I'm Just Your Problem" where her bravado breaks down and she admits she just wants to be friends with PB).
    I think that's why Marceline didn't want to be a vampire anymore. WIth people around her, constantly getting flashes of the real her, she couldn't pretend she was just a badass jerk who wanted to "bury you in the ground" like she could when she was alone or with people who didn't take the time to figure her out.

    I also really love the vampire king. You really get the idea that he has existed for a LOOOOONG time, and has seen everything. I believe that's the main cause for his overall zanyness. Lots of immortal/long living creatures tend to be portrayed as "dynamic", sometimes stoic and wise, other times chaotic and childish, or even a combination of both.

    I think she actually makes a very similar joke to the one about turning Jake into a zombie, when she admits she could have killed anyone in her friend group at any time just because she could, or she was hungry. Who's to say how easy it is really to be vampire vegan and drink red all the time when surrounded by the blood of others, especially when you consider her abandoning the humans for their own safety from herself. Dark humor

    10:26 An interesting revelation I've had after re-watching stakes (12th time at least) and the entire series for the second time: In the episode Hoots, the cosmic owl, the resident dream influencer, is hopping around dreams. He finds a female bird like creature (revealed to be Gunther), and starts neglecting his duties, instead going from dream to dream in search of this lady. He eventually finds her, and takes her back to his place, where she asks if they can enter any person's dream. For anyone who has forgot, the cosmic owl's mere presence makes the dream come true. Gunther asks to enter PB's dream, and they enter her dream. Once they do, Gunther basically kills PB in her dream (link to the dream, skip a bit forward in the video: ua-cam.com/video/BY0AllY5DiY/v-deo.html The important part is that her people reject her and she says, "After everything I've done for you." Looking back this episode foreshadowed KOO taking over her kingdom.

    After watching Obsidian, you could say that she uses all those seemingly out of character moments (like those dark jokes she would probably abhor), were her reflexive attempts to make herself seem monstrous and sadistic by digging into her past trauma. An extreme attempt to push people away after the death of her mother and messy breakup with the only other immortal she'd ever really gotten along with, let alone loved.

    Adventure is such a heartfelt series with many details to comjur, always full of open discussions, not for their lack of answers but for the questions it leaves us with, I have finished this series yet I still thoroughly enjoy watching random episodes every once in a while and listening to megareviews such as this, I appreciate the thought and small things that seems to click and the enjoyment it brings others, and just being able to look back at it. I definitely enjoy listening to your take on it , thanks for the videos 👍

    Edit: I've since changed my stance on this. The reason Marcy acted the way she did in the beginning of the show was because she has always felt like a monster, even since before she was bit, and she coped with these feelings by actively cultivating her persona as a monster, so that she could feel in-control of her situation.
    So I've watched this review multiple times from boredom and it hit me.
    Your criticism of Marceline's early personality failing to mesh with the later Marceline's personality actually makes sense when you account for her traumas.
    It is well documented that individuals who go through highly traumatic past experiences tend to deal with their trauma by inflicting the same pay they felt onto others, so as to feel more in control in a certain area after losing autonomy in that area.
    This is my explanation for why Marceline resolves to treat other people the way her attackers treated her -- they taunted and assaulted her, and she taunts and assaults others.
    Consider, also, that these traumas not being resolved after centuries of isolation could further damage her own psyche.

    If you want a more detailed version of Marcy and Simon at this time I highly reccommend Simon/Marcy’s journal. It is st the end of the enchiridion that they published and confirms that ice king did indeed contact Hinson and gives a lot of backstory to some of the confusing stuff like the fries and shwabble

    I know I am _extremely_ late, but did anyone else notice how when Marceline starts to play 'Everything Stays' at the end of 'A Dark Cloud' she holds her base the same way she does in 'Betty'? Nice bit of continuity that I feel like needed appreciation :)
    On a side note, I can recall that she has access to VK's telekinesis power as she uses it in 'Evicted' when she lifts the unfinished embroidery to show her initials that she carved in the treehouse.

    Also, i think they nailed the Vampire King character. You never know what he's thinking and why he's doing what he's doing and that's the point.Even at the end of the series, we still don't know if he truly did want to become unvampire or he was just playing around with our heroes
    Also, when Ice King said they were survivors, it's safe to assume that he's referring unconsciously to their past
