The international students struggling to feed themselves in lockdown

  • They come for the privilege and prestige of a British university experience, promised an education at world-class institutions. And they pay a hefty price. Fees for international students are often more than £10,000 a year. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
But we've discovered Covid has left huge numbers of them queueing up for food banks, crammed into terrible accommodation, trying to study online while sharing rooms with four or five others and feeling totally abandoned by their universities.
The problem has become so acute that one food bank in east London now caters solely for international students.

International students are a key source of funding for UK universities and are beneficial for the wider economy, with a government estimate of over £5 billion in income excluding tuition fees. Declining student numbers could be reversed with targeted policies.
      About the research
International students have become a key source of funding for UK universities, and provide a significant contribution to the UK economy through tuition fees, living expenses and associated income such as parents’ visits to the UK. For example, tuition fee income from non-EU students alone accounted for £4.2 billion in 2014-15 (Higher Education Statistics Agency, 2016).
International students have also helped to maintain overall student numbers at a time of declining enrolments within the UK. The total number of students (domestic and international) has over the last four years dropped by 200,000 (from 2,497,000 in 2010/11 to 2,266,000 in 2014/15), and is set to decline further.
A working paper from the ESRC Centre for Population Change (CPC) has analysed the trends in international student mobility to the UK. It was based on a large CPC survey of international students (gathering over 3,300 responses), parallel surveys at universities in Austria and Latvia, in-depth interviews with international students and university staff, and analysis of datasets from the Higher Education Statistical Agency (HESA).

It sounds as though the universities will not reach out to students to avoid committing to sincere and genuine assistance because they don't really want to pay out. When you're charging international students such hefty fees it is only ethical to look out for the well being of your funding body, if anything for your own survival. whilst I dont agree with the situation these students are in, to be fair there is a lot more to running online courses and switching a uni to be able to teach online than you probably think. As someone who works directly in that area in the IT / Modern Workplace side of things, I know there is a lot of work and investment involved to try to move all teaching (and other supporting functions) to work online. Huge investments in purchasing 1000s of laptops for both teaching and support staff and students that dont have them, then designing, planning, implementing and managing the infrastructure to be able to manage and secure those devices (Universities are targeted by hackers more than any other type of organization), plus there is a lot of work required for teaching staff to adapt and design to these new ways of teaching.

The international students most of them carry laptops so I dont think that the University might be buying laptops for everyone. They can reduce the transportation cost of the staffs as well. Only thing is that staffs have to download some apps I dont think that might need huge investments as all are working from home and the apps like zoom are free in Google play and almost everyone has a smartphone . I dont understand why these people say that there are huge expenses to convert to online teaching. I hope all get vaccinated soon and everything would come back to normal. Then coming to the hackers, online apps already have security and be it for University or personal they do their job. I dont think they have to pay extra as it's not an app that the University developed to worry about

My child’s flat for university in London is £2,650 p.c.m. and they are now working online at home; for which we’ve had to assemble an office. Thanks to British hospitality and charity it seems like those students didn’t look like they were starving. Indians keep telling us they’re a first world country. Well behave like one. @@Ella0575 what nonsense is this? do you know how hard it is to apply and qualify for a UK student visa!!! do you even know how much that cost? almost £1000 and you have to show proof that you have enough money to survive through out your studies, even though they give you 20 hours MAX working hours per week you still need to show that you have a minimum of £1200 per month. and how much are the fees per year, as he said £12,700 and thats the cheapest amount. if you are doing a specialised course like computer science or medicine you pay almost £18,000 per year. and the tax your idiot brain is crying about is included in the school fees and in the visa!! so do you claim to be paying a minimum of £2000 to £3000 in tax per year as a student? OHHH and of course we must have private insurance since we cant even touch the NHS without one of you screaming "you're not paying tax for it" and don't even get me started on accommodation, most of us can't just rent any apartment!! if we don't have a British guarantor we have to pay almost 4 months upfront! and some of us actually have to register with the police every year, every time we travel in and out of the country on our student visa because God Forbid we go home to see our families. and the funniest part is the locals think that we're coming to steal everything, did you know that our tuition fees pay your tuition fees or do you think the government is printing money every time you need your student loan?
But hey don't worry, brexit happened...everything's changing, other European countries don't treat us like that and British qualifications aren't THE HYPE anymore. So go hold your head up high with your student debt which miraculously dissolves after a few years BECAUSE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS and have a cup of tea. and watch the international students who are now doctors, scientists, engineers etc that your country educated walk out to greener pastures leaving you in the fucking cold Greggs pasty dust.

      Ikr. Agreed.
After finishing a postgrad in the UK i discovered that one could easily get that for a small fraction of the money in many other European countries, and with equal/better education standard. It's not like international students are all enrolled in Oxford or Cambridge U. No prestige whatsoever. E.g. Germany, Italy, Finland all offer low-cost/free education to international candidates depending on your specialisation and merit because to those countries education should be accessible universally.
Even with a study grant, the whole time i was in the UK, i doubled as a care worker for long hours 6 days a week tending to UK's aged to support my living expenses and loans. That's without COVID. With COVID, i can't imagine where i would've been.
If you're a prospective student, do your research properly before dumping loads of money into these COMMERCIALISED academic institutions.

@@zahidhakim5727 mine was in humanities. But even if you're not, read on. honestly knowing the number of people who have done postgrads in Europe, you're better off opting for less overrated coutries e.g. non-English speaking ones. Below are the reasons:
      - you get to learn a new language that'll certainly be an edge when you join the job market (even if you want a future job in the UK, an extra European language is a definitely a plus there - getting and holding jobs, even during times like COVID one. Learnt from real-life examples of people around me).
      - competition for grants, internships, scholarships etc is not as strong as in English-speaking countries because English is/has been too accessible in the past decades. Default choice of many international students is an English-speaking country. Now that US is less favourable, where's the next-in-line option? Some countries have tuition fee waiver for students from developing countries/families of lower economic status (which i am, but there weren't such options for me from the UK, only from my own govt)
      - most European countries have lower tuition fees than UK, even with currency consideration aside.
      - Also, study loans (whether for tuition or living expenses)!! You don't want to be taking years to pay this off after you've graduated. If you get a full scholarship to Oxford, then go for it! If you're self-funded, please think thrice or more.
      - if you're choosing London (which is where I'd been), living expenses (majority rent) is going to drown the average international student of middle-class background who doesn't have trust funds/wealthy parents to fall back on. When you're studying, it's better that you're financially comfortable because you'd want to focus on your studies. That's your priority. Not worry about your next meal or the train ticket home that might eat into your lunch money. That WILL affect your grades! I cycled all over london fyi, and trust me, it IS tiring.
      - most European countries, with national languages other than English, offer postgrad degrees in English (do your research). Because English is considered the language of academia. You can easily find english resources on-campus, in public libraries and professors are well-versed in English. To undertake these degrees, you often don't need additional language certification, just B2 English if you're not native or it hasn't been the language of instruction in your education for at least a year (but i think you're english-educated anyway). Of course, living in non-English speaking countries, you'll need the language to get around/socialise, so you'd better at least know a good deal of the destination language
      - you'll get to experience another culture outside of the English-speaking world, which is something your future employer might also consider, and memories you can keep for yourself and tell your grandchildren
I encourage you to join university open days (most are online now) to know what institutions all over Europe offer. E.g. If you're doing engineering/science/math, try Germany/Belgium/Netherlands/somewhere in northern Europe etc. Some might have currencies stronger than the UK, but consider tuition fees etc altogether and they might end up a whole lot less.
I'm taking my time to write this hoping that young students will see it. Please think/plan very hard before you commit. It might be a decision that will come back to haunt you a long time after.

The problem here seems to be that if those students tell their universes which they have registered with for their study about their financial difficulties, they might have difficulties with renewing their visas when their visas expire , or if they go back homes to their countries to wait during this difficult time , and they have invested so much money in their study in the UK, dropping out is not an option to them and their families
So the solution here can be that their universities and the UK ministry of external affairs should work together to guarantee visas for those international students so that if remaing in the UK during this time is too much hardship for them, they can go back to their homes in their countries, and wait until things get better and then can return to continue their study disrupted by the pandemic

My daughter is studying animation and illustration at Kingston and has had a project where she has to work with two students who are in Asia, where there's a time zone disparity, as well as a language one, and another in Hammersmith, where she can only communicate online, and that's to create an animated piece. All of these students are being short changed and going by her, stressed out by the debt they're incurring, the isolation they're feeling, as she's in a room the size of a cell for most of the day, and by the pressure to perform as though she was with her fellow students, and tutors and had access to the facilities.

It costs more to go online? Really? Laughable. Yes you have to chnage the way you are workinf and perhaps look at updating the current IT infrastructure which can only bring benefits for the future as it makes everything much more efficient. They need to be better at promoting their student services and reach out to those most vulnerable. Rubbish excuse. If they cannot look after their students then close up.

It's good that they're finally getting some attention on the news...The universities should be ashamed for treating students like that during a pandemic. A university degree is not worth years of debt and suffering specially for freaking online classes!! 😡

For everyone being like "they should be able to fund themselves without a job" the UK tier 4 student visa allows students to work part time up to 20 hours a week. Many international students rely on this as supplementary income along with what's sent from home. It's part of the planning for some of these students that they will be able to contribute to their living expenses this way.

I can’t imagine the hardships the students are facing now. Really universities need to lower their fees so that these students can focus on their studies. Those who has gone thru this will only understand. Half of your mind will always be thinking about food and bills.

They are students but the funny thing is ,that is one thing they refuse to learn about the UK (Raw deals for any foreigner ). Everyone of them want the fame that comes with getting a degree in the UK , but at what cost ???
Not forgetting the UK immigration system ( Home Office a.k.a . Government Cash Cow ) , they milk foreigners who try to settle there .You are never granted "Indefinite Leave to Remain " in a straightforward manner . They make sure every six months or one year or two years you have to pay huge amounts when you re-apply to extend your Limited Leave to Remain . Every year UK immigration application fees are increased because they know so many people are willing to pay whatever the cost . People should realize these sacrifices are not worth it anymore because there is no life or future in the UK , especially now after Brexit , Covid and a historic Recession they are not talking about .
