There’s just something about eating outdoors that I love. I’m especially tickled to have a patio right off my kitchen in my new home in the Sonoran Desert. We get a lot of sun here in Tucson & it shines even stronger in the warmer months. I really wanted to get this project done before spring rolled around.
This vintage patio set from the 1950’s was given to me by my mother who had gotten it from a friend when she lived in Sonoma, CA. It was originally pale yellow, then I painted it hunter green for my mom & now it’s brilliant blue. It was peeling in many spots & 7 years had passed since I last painted it.
I’ve found that anything with a lattice pattern takes more coats of paint because you loose a fair amount of it in the cut outs. In order to thoroughly coat the lattice, you need to spray up and down, back & forth & then slightly at an angle. It’s hard to explain but you’ll see me demonstrating this towards the end of the video.
I love this vintage set & plan to get many more years use out of it. The brilliant pop of blue on my patio is a striking contrast to the magenta/pink Bougainvillea Barbara Karst right next to it.
It’s time consuming to prep & paint, but the results are so worth it!
Enjoy your garden,
Nell

i love the story of this set and this blue is incredible 💙💙
The fact that you have kept this set and maintained it is awesome. I love the color too
I just don't understand why people don't get PATIO FURNITURE COVER'S FOR THE THINGS YOU REALLY LOVE. THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL SET.
You seem like such a happy person. Thanks for sharing your tips!
Beautiful, beautiful patio set. I noticed it on the first JoyUs video I watched. The fact that it was your mother's makes it even more special. Thanks for the tips.
I was driving down the street and saw a similar large oval metal table just being put on the sidewalk for garbage pickup the next day. A daughter was emptying out her deceased parents home and was hoping someone came by to pick it up before the garbage collectors came. It is in excellent condition and was just what I had been looking for because newer ones are not of the same quality. So thank you for the painting tips.
Great job Nell ! It's wonderful that your mother passed that patio set on to you... I love that happy blue color. My backyard fence is painted that color and it just makes all the greenery and plants pop out making me feel as though I'm at the beach. Very tropical!😊
Hi Marta - I love it too. I'm planting my little garden right next to this set in yellow, red & hot pink. A little color in the desert! Nell
Needed demonstrations of painting!
Kudos on a very helpful DIY video--this is my next weekend project.
Loooove that blue!!
I love your patio set! It’s so pretty!
Thank you for the tutorial. I also live in Tucson and have patio furniture I plan to repaint. It will be my first attempt at this project.
Thank you for sharing this Great video.
Nice tutorial! I live in Gilbert AZ and need to update and freshen up my outdoor pieces. Good tips!
Yayyy the patio video 🤗 thanx Nell for sharing 😊 awesome new painted blue set , lovely bougainvillea bloom indeed and awesome batik shirt yassss yasssss and last but not least the cactus mix on the middle 😆🍻💖✨
Hi Indra - You're very welcome. I've planted 2 new cactus & succulent pots since I filmed this. Will be showing them soon! Hugs, Nell
hahahaha! I have the same one with the benches, coffee table and end tables. I painted chairs bright orange and tables yellow.
Wow it looks great!!
Thank you Emily! I love this blast of bright blue. Nell
Thank you for this video! Going to restore my vintage ice cream parlor set ❤️
Wonderful job. I have a similar set I'm working on
Dear Mrs. Foster,
Hi! this is Jackson Miley. I am a subscriber to your channel and love your videos! Your videos always have something interesting in them and I watch them all the time! I bet running a youtube channel is a lot of work! Your videos are always so informative! When I got a pothos plant, I went straight to your video for advice on how to care for it and. . . It is thriving like crazy! I also watched your bromeliad series and I loved it! I love tuning in to your channel to find something new on your channel every few days!
Thank-you and God bless, Jackson Miley
Hi Jackson - I'm glad I've been able to help you out! Gardening is all about experience & I love sharing mine. Yes, running a UA-cam channel is work but our blog is even more work. Fortunately I love what I do! Thanks for subscribing & blessings to you too. Nell
Expanded metal would be correct not lattice.
Great job, My wife picked safety blue it's the same or close to your color. I'm fixing to spray it.
4 Chairs, 4 Rockers and a Table took almost 1 gallon of primer.
I have the same set! Came from my grandmother. Was pale yellow originally too, now hunter green.
Hello since you have a same set maybe, hopefully you could help me. I too have this set im getting to restore giving to me by my boyfriend's mom which originally belonged to her grandma. The project was a tonmuch for her to take on and she knew i loved doing restoration projects. Id love to keep this in her family but for the life of me can't figure oit the company who made it, the style or year it was made. Any info would be much appreciated
Torie Aleaga unfortunately I have no idea. It came from my grandmother, to my mom, and now to me. Wish I could help you.
I have the exact same furniture and I'm getting ready to re do it. It was a off yellow originally and a couple of white coats that are now peeling off. My question, how many cans of paint did it take you for the entire job. Thanks
Love the color of yours it turned out great. I was wondering if you could possibly tell who made your set and how old it might because it's the only one I've seen that was very similar to mine. It was given to by me by a close friends who said it belonged to her grandma. I'm trying to find out identify the body style of my set
Love how your bougainvillea is standing up beautifully without the aid of a wall or trellis! How on earth do you achieve that? Seems like all your bougies tend to be near a wall....but I'm hoping to see this one (that's behind you) in a future video! 🤗
This Bougainvillea Barbara Karst is gorgeous now. It's actually growing against a fence. My big bougie grows against a wall & the other 2 are staked. Nell
How many cans of paint you spent or used for this project? I do have 4 chairs that I want to paint, thanks, btw nice video
what did you use for your protective coat.
Has anyone ever tried to paint a design on this type of table? I have this set and am getting ready to paint it. I had the idea today while looking at it to paint a huge sunflower on the table. Do you all think it would work since the table is that metal mesh?
Great video. I’ll be re painting similar furniture my Mom passed to me. Would like to know your products
I have the exact same patio set. Purchased it at a garage sale a few years ago. I wonder if it's from the 1950s also? Probably so. Great tips thanks!
Richard - I love this set & it's well worth the work. I know it's from the 50's because that's when my mom's friend bought it. They didn't make as many styles back then! Nell
What brand and color is the spray paint? Love it!
Beautiful! How many cans of spray paint did it take to do the set?
Also curious!
Hi Nell! question: Can you do a drip irrigation system with succulents?
Yes, I had a drip system on my Santa Barbara garden which was full of succulents. I have 1 on my garden here too. Nell
I have been wanting to paint my outdoor wrought iron furniture. Would it be crazy if I choose to apply paint with a brush instead of applying the paint with a spray can? Thanks!
I saw a video by a guy who used a brush. Stemmed easier by no way to compare the results. Light spraying coats seem more prevalent.
If you were changing from say a red to another color, lighter or darker, does that paint cover well?
Probably with a couple costs of good primer.
perfect tutorial!
what color is it?? eww yellow
looks like periwinkle at first
