    There was a study done in Pakistan with 40 diabetic patients with kidney disease where 20 were treated with 300gm/day of thiamine (Vitamin B1) in divided doses and the other 20 with placebo. ALL the treatment group showed marked improvement as measured by the dimished protein in their urine whereas the placebo group largely didn't. 7 of the treatment group actually had their protein drop to those of healthy individuals - effectively their kidneys were cured.
    Diabetics are known to be low in thiamine, the excessive urination to eliminate excess glucose also depletes thiamine. It's possible that the benefits of kefir for the kidneys is due to the kefir bacteria colonising the gut producing B vitamins, in addition to any other benefits. if I had renal disease I'd take 300gm/day of thiamine (preferably benfotiamine or allithiamine, fat-soluble versions of thiamine) in addition to the kefir.

    This is fascinating! Especially since Kefir has more potassium, which CKD patients are often told that they have to be careful of.

    I purchased Kefir "grains" here in the Philippines a month ago and it is so easy to make. There were 4 options with Belgium, Irish, Russian, and one other. The Belgium apparently is the less sour and has the most types of bacteria.
    I appreciate this new info. I have watched many "how to" kefir videos and each presents some new information but rarely is all of the information in 1 video so it takes some research to get a better understanding if that is important to you.

    Yesterday I was in a hurry so began easy Kefir . Woke up realizing I had not added the ULINE pre probiotic. So added 1 TBS and this morning it was thicker but not yogurt thickness. BUT drinkable. Well yippee. I wanted to drink a probiotic anyway. Will make it as per your instructions today. L.Gas is yummy. Waiting for my fancy yogurt maker to make p. Plus.

      Bloody 'ell! Am I grateful for this stuff! I would not wish GERD on my _worst_ enemy (well, maybe one or two of them...). It's _horrible_ and I was told that I should go on Lanseloc as a chronic medication. I'm a South African State Pensioner and this would have taken R200 per month off my spendable pension. (My R1890 per month pension...). Fermented foods have done it for me - my own home-made Sourdough Bread with _real butter_ on it. Sauerkraut (got my first batch brewing under the sink). Good stuff.

    I have reacquiring kidney stones and have had this problem for more than 20 years. I have recently been introduced to Chanuca Piadra (6 months) to brake up the stones rather than having lethrotripsy procedures (23 so far). I have been making Kambucha for a while - but it takes such along time to make. I had my first Kefir drink today after hearing/reading about its health benefits and will be getting the kefir grains to start making it myself. Wish me luck! • @CulturedFoodLife
      @CulturedFoodLife  4 роки тому +3

      Yes but make sure you are using a tight lid with milk kefir and a cloth and rubberband with water kefir. Otherwise they will cross contaminate and the bacteria will be less diverse. Your milk kefir can be become overly yeasty overtime if not fermented with a sealed lid.

    My comment is a bit out of sync, Donna because I’m binge watching as a new subscriber! 😅This podcast explains to me how kefir helps stabilise blood pressure! Although I’m improving with the type two, my blood pressure is higher than I’d like it to be ( and my doctor!) so I have about six weeks until my next diabetes review and my HbA1c blood test. I’m hoping that will be long enough, as a new kefir drinker/ maker to make a definite improvement. I’m learning so much in a short space of time from you!

    • @CulturedFoodLife
      @CulturedFoodLife  5 років тому +2

      It's different for everyone. There can be if you are super sensitive to dairy and need to heal your gut with other things first, OR if you go through a detox/healing crisis. Kefir is very powerful so it can clean out the bad bacteria which could cause congestion during this time.

      Hi! You are right I can not give medical advise as I am not a doctor. Personally I suggest having smaller amounts (1/4 cup or less) and building up. Larger amounts are not bad, but you can (and most likely will) go through a healing crisis/detox which can be not so fun for awhile. Hi Donna! I am lactose intolerance, how do I make coconut milk kefir. How do I make coconut milk kefir? Also, in comparison to cows milk kefir which sounds to be very beneficial, what's the profitability of coconut milk kefir? Thank you very much for your response.

    • @CulturedFoodLife
      @CulturedFoodLife  5 років тому +3

      Hi Olga! So I will let you know that milk kefir is 99% lactose free and I have seen hundreds of individuals do wonderful on milk kefir! (although you may still have a detox/healing reaction in the beginning) That being said if you feel you aren't comfortable with milk kefir or want to heal your gut a bit first: I have all the information on making coconut milk kefir on my website here: www.culturedfoodlife.com/recipe/coconut-kefir/
      CANNED coconut milk that is full fat has similar benefits to milk kefir. The other types of nut milks seem to have less (in my opinion) but they are still beneficial and have their own individual benefits that come from whatever nut or seed you are making /getting the milk from. But the regular milk and canned coconut milk are the strongest for benefits in my personal opinion.

    • @CulturedFoodLife
      @CulturedFoodLife  5 років тому +2

      Hi Erica! The grains should smell sour but not rotten or dirty. If your grains werent LIVE when you go them then they will not work well. a lot places sell dehdryated kefir grains but they do not work well at all. Kefir isn't exactly the same every batch. But it should be tart and thicker then the milk used every time. It smell sour/tart but not stinky or rotten. It sounds like your grains are dead. I sell LIVE kefir grains on my website if you are interested and there a lot of share groups as well you can find that people share there grains with each other. But you definetly want to avoid dehydrated grains. I would suggest getting some new ones from a good source. I also have kefir packets which are a bit easier for beginners as well you can find on my website. Kefir is easy you just need to get some good cultures! Hang in there!
