    I
    LOVE
    KEFIR!
    Since I found the trilogy, Kefir, Kombucha and fermented foods, I have improved my overall health SO much it's almost unbelievable! My Doctors are telling me they don't know what I am doing, BUT KEEP DOING IT! Of course they scoff when I tell them it is because of K,K & FF! My kidney numbers have drastically improved, the inflammation in my joints is much improved (lessened) to the point that I have drastically cut back on the amount of opioid pain pills! I have gone from 77 units of insulin a day to 10! I have lost 50 pounds, without even trying very hard! Right at the moment, I am on crutches and an Iwalk 2.0 brace and have been for 6 months so I have been unable to do a lot of exercise! I had been battling a problem with infections for over 3 years, but they seem to now be gone!
    I just feel better overall and the only thing I can attribute all these improvements to is the trilogy! I have always loved buttermilk and yogurt so the transition to Kefir was an easy one for me! I have been a Chef for over 35 years so I found it easy to incorporate all these fermented foods into my diet. I love the Ranch knockoff I make (Hidden Acres Farm Dressing) from scratch with herbs and spices and have now started making it with the Kombucha Mayonnaise that Donna put out the other day. I had been (and still am) making it with Kefir instead of buttermilk and Kefir Creme Fraiche instead of sour cream. I have had others try this and love it! Most have no idea just how healthy it is for them, even after I tell them! These same people wrinkle their noses when I start talking about all the cultured stuff I do.
    I am grateful that I found the trilogy and grateful that I found Donna's site and all the information I have gained from her! Thank you Donna!

      And I forgot to mention my blood pressure came down also!
      I started out drinking 1/2 cup Kefir in the morning and 1/2 cup in the evening. I was drinking about 1/2 to 1 cup Kombucha mid day and about 1/2 cup sauerkraut daily. I also made a Green Cabbage Kimchi that turned out really great that gets used in the stead of regular. It makes a Ruben sandwich that is absolutely wonderful! (It goes on the sandwich last, maybe room temp, never heated!
      Now days, I drink 1 to 2 cups in the a.m. and 1 to 2 cups in the p.m. of the Kefir. Kombucha can be somewhere around a pint a day and still doing the sauerkraut. I have also added Water Kefir and Ginger Beer from Ginger Beer Plant.
      OMG does Water Kefir make a wonderful Cremè Soda!
      Doing the trilogy has helped shed the cravings for some foods that are really bad for You! (Chips, sweets and such, junk food).
      I shall never give up on my fermented friends!

    Just found out about kefir grains about 2 weeks ago. To my surprise I found a local in my area that was selling live grains on Facebook market. Now almost a week into it and my kefir comes out super thick and creamy after just 24 hours of fermenting out on the counter. I do mix in a lil bit of coconut flavored almond milk to sweeten it up a bit and wallahhh. I have a delicious healthy drink every day that I plan to continue making for the rest of my days.

    Hi Donna, I have suffered from severe episodes of Rosacea, so severe the doctor was going to send me to the hospital for antibiotic drip, he said it was the worse case he had ever seen. As long as I drink kefir every day, it keeps the Rosacea away!

      There's a reason for that. Rosacea is a manifestation of Candida albicans. The probiotics in Kefir and other fermented foods like sauerkraut eat the yeast overgrowth. I had Rosacea in 1998 and the doctor put me on a 6 WEEK COURSE OF ANTIBIOTICS! Work that one out!

      Rosacea is from SIBO….small intestinal bacteria overgrowth. You may want to culture lacto bacillus reuteri for 36 hours. I love my friend kefir and my friend Donna! It took me a year before I really committed to making kefir every day and now I can't imagine not having it. I miss it if I can't drink it. It's the healthiest fast food I've ever found and I think of it as a baby blanket for my gut. My doctor still doesn't believe it was kefir that made my good cholesterol go up. She thinks it's a weird hereditary thing. The problem with her theory is that NOBODY else in my family has inherited that trait! Thanks Donna :)

I milk a couple of goats and every night when I bring in the fresh milk I start a new jar of kefir. So easy!

    Hello Donna. Thank you for your wonderful and educational videos. I have been buying kefir from the store for years, but after I watched a few of your videos I decided to do it at home.
    It is easy and I love its taste. I live in one of the northern European Scandinavian countries and it is not common to make kefir at home. Finding kefir grains is not easy. I found one shop for organic food that sells grains for appr. 20 dollars, but I keep asking myself, where they come from originally. Perhaps I am too fussy. So far I have bought ready-made kefir
    at grocery stores, I drink most of it and use the lowest part of the container ( about 1 inch)
    for the next batch. After having used it twice it no longer works and I need to go and buy a new container at the store. I have one question: Since I can drink only lactose-free milk,
    I tend to pour lactose-free milk on the grains. Could I possibly use normal milk and hope that the fermentation process makes the milk - turned into kefir - become lactose-free?
    Thank you, all the best.

    • @typower9
      @typower9 Рік тому +1

      Yes! Lactose free milk doesn't provide enough food for the kefir. That's probably why you only get 2 batches from the store-bought kefir. The store-bought kefir is NOT made with lactose free milk!

    • @madj7152
      @madj7152 Рік тому

    • @CulturedFoodLife
      @CulturedFoodLife  4 роки тому +2

      Hi G Mar. It depends more on how they are taken care of. The kefir grains are all the same as far as what they are made of. But they will be more healthy and active if they are making milk kefir on the counter every day and not abused in some way by either starving them by not feeding them enough, using weird ingredients, rinsing them with water etc. It's all about how you take care of them. Happy healthy grains can ferment 3-6 cups of milk .

      Hi Aaron, We mainly use regular store bought milk. We love raw milk, but it's quite expensive and can actually be tricky to work with. You need to remove the cream on top (to avoid a yeasty flavor) and the raw milk has it's own good bacteria which can compete with the grains for food. Regular store bought milk works great and has loads of benefits still. We save our raw milk for drinking plain. Hope this helps! During my research I found kefir may help so I decided to give it a try. I find that store bought kefir has a lot of carbs is homemade kefir healthier?

      I have had terrible sleep problems for literally decades. Very short sleep cycles all compounded by ADHD. Have been referred to do sleep testing but in true ADHD fashion still haven't gone. Melatonin helps when I double or triple up on the dosage, but when I run out it's back to the same old.
      I only recently started taking magnesium pills along with this cultured food adventure (no melatonin added) and so far have been shocked to have slept 8-9 hrs a night straight with no waking up multiple days in a row. My dreams have been more interesting, too. 😊 I feel hopeful now.
      ETA: I am currently not on ADHD medication at the moment. When I am, my whacked out sleep cycles still remain the same.
      I also have a problem with excess drinking (alcohol) as a stress mitigator when I am not on the medication. Once my meds kick in I barely/rarely drink. I am hoping that this new regimen will even out my system to not so readily fall back on alcohol when I am off the ADHD meds.

    I saw your UA-cam channel and immediately began to incorporate Kefir Jan. 01, 2018. I had to use store bought until I could get the grains. I'm now waiting for my grains to revive and produce homemade Kefir. I tasted a batch today and it seemed thin compared to store bought, and it was fizzy, with a slight bite - in comparison to store bought. I don't know if that's good or bad. I put an orange peel and a chunk of mango in it to see how that changes it. I have autoimmune issues, and honestly, no lie, I already have noticed the difference. I've been drinking it since the 1st and my gums aren't swollen anymore. So, in 23 days. That's impressive! I'm eager to get a good batch. (Hah, maybe I've already have a good batch and don't know it.) Oh, and in addition to that, I also gave up sugar at the same time. So, as a result of both changes, I've lost weight. Wasn't even trying for that. You were a God send.

      I love fizzy kefir...it's good. I never had store bought kefir so as far as thickness goes I can't comment. Mine is slightly thinner than yogurt but it does get thicker in the fridge.

      Thanks Laura for your comment. I've found with time that I like it a little fizzy too. And the more I make my own Kefir, it seems the grains are getting stronger, because my Kefir ferments so faster and is creamier now. So, yeah, I much prefer homemade over the store bought. Lucky you that you never had to try store bought. Now that's me too.

This was a question from my boyfriend who loves drinking allot of kefir daily. We tried web searches but get mixed answers. My guess would be to say no because of the beneficial microbes. I’d like to make cheese, ice cream, smoothies but not sure if we can Over do our kefir intake. Thank You! Your videos and website are so helpful.

      Have you tried combining it with RS (resistant starch)? RS is basically prebiotic fiber that feeds the good bacteria. If you don't have enough prebiotic fiber your buggies might be just not getting enough food to colonize properly.
      Cooked and cooled potatoes (you can even re-heat slightly) give you some easy, tasty fiber, Look up Resistant starch and add some of those to you diet.

    • @CulturedFoodLife
      @CulturedFoodLife  6 років тому +3

      Hi Jenn! Yes this is almost certainly a healing crisis! This can happen in the begining because you are introducing hundreds and hundreds of strains of good bacteria into your gut that weren't there before. What happens is they do their job go in and clean house! They help to balance out the bad bacteria, yeasts, toxins, heavy metals and more. Your body also stores old flus and viruses in your cells that wait around for you to lower your immune system. The good bacteria help to clean these out. A cup of kefir is a LOT for someone who hasn't been getting any good bacteria from their diet. This certainly is not a bad thing but it can be not so fun for a little bit (depending on how much you need to heal) I am not a doctor, but this is what I've personally gone through and found on my journey and studies. I have a whole blog/guide on how to go through the healing crisis that will really help you:
      Definetly dont stop drinking kefir!! You may just want to drink less and build up as you heal. www.culturedfoodlife.com/the-healing-crisis-and-cultured-foods/
      The healing crisis podcast is at the bottom of the website :)

      Definetly read the article and go with your gut!! We have gone through massive healing crisis's in my family, and I will say it is definetly worth it! All that stuff that is making you feel, tired, anxious, sick, sluggish, and more is starting to leave and the beginning is not so fun and can last a little while depending on how many cultured foods you eat, how good the rest of your diet and lifestyle are and how much you need to heal from. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

He never took the medication they wanted him to and his diabetes is easily under control...even with "breaks"! I'm waiting for it to go completely now after listening today!
    A question for Donna if possible...I leave my kefir longer than most...2 days usually for first ferment... until it's quite strong...my theory is that it just gets more good bacteria. Is this ok??? (Husband likes it like that!)

      Lynne LW actually the good bacteria will diminish the longer you ferment it. It will run out of food and you’ll have less probiotics. We like to do a second fermentation that gives the microbes more food and then you get more probiotics. www.culturedfoodlife.com/how-to-second-ferment-kefir2/

    • @CulturedFoodLife
      @CulturedFoodLife  6 років тому +3

      We don't teach people to boil their milk, but it doesn't affect making kefir. The bacteria in the kefir starter eat the lactose out of the milk. The bacteria in the milk aren't what make the kefir turn into kefir.
