  • In this Video I show what its like to parallel two different size generators. Honda Eu3000is and Honda Eu2200i. Both inverter gens will load share and both will sync the AC load in matching phase so it will not harm your generators or the loads you are powering including sensitive items. Finally a proven and verified load and metering test that proves inverter generators regardless of size and number (2,3,5,7) share the load Amp load above and beyond each individual rated I-generator. Your proven test put the nail in the coffin of all the made-up theorys from the universal Amp barrier to a black-hole opening. Now I know my WEN I4000 and 2 predator I2000 will work together bt simply adding one more set of banana wires from the parallel junction box to my 3rd generator providing 6700 watts.

    Thanks for putting this together and I particularly like the clamp-on meter readings showing the current supplied by each generator. I have an EU3000is with a less robust wheels kit that I've been using since 2015 for off-grid camping and for emergency backup at home. It's proven to be a great generator, but lifting it into a pickup bed without help is a major struggle. Curiously, it would not reliably start the Coleman Mach 13.5 on my previous camper with eco switched off, so it wasn't nearly as fuel efficient as I would have liked. A couple of years ago, I added a Predator 2000 as well as a pair of Champion 2000's (the "suitcase" form factor model sold by TSC) to my stable. The predator is a great little generator, is perfect for off grid camping in winter and I routinely ran for 10+ hrs on a single tank of fuel. I had similar results off grid in winter with one of the Champion 2000's, much lighter in weight, but seemed louder when running at higher loads. One oddity about the that particular Champion is the proprietary parallel kit with square banana plugs. That kit would not have allowed parallel connection to either of my other generators, so I built up a suicide parallel kit expressly for testing. Although the Champions were happy running in parallel with an identical unit, they refused to play well in parallel with my Honda EU3000is or with my Predator 2000 so I quickly ended those tests. (Note that I would never recommend that very dangerous harness configuration for field use and once my tests were completed, I completely dismantled it.) I spoke with Champion about that issue, but to no great surprise, they wouldn't not offer any useful related information. Although I did like the light weight and portability of the Champions, I sold that pair earlier this year to a friend who wanted them for emergency home backup. He bought the correct parallel kit and has been completely happy with them.
    Using a conventional 30A parallel from Harbor Freight, a surprisingly well built harness, I was able to parallel my Predator 2000 with my Honda EU3000is and the oscilloscope showed a very clean and stable waveform. I never ran that combination it at higher loads and never used it in the field in that configuration, so I can't speak to how they shared loading.
    I've since purchased a pair of Honda EU2200i's with CO minder and bluetooth. (As a random aside, I'd gladly give up the CO minder for the 12V output on the previous model. If you're aware of a way to get 12v out of that unit, I'd be very interested in that mod.) In reading through the manual for the EU2200i, Honda makes a point of expressly stating which Honda generators can be run in parallel. I'm not sure why they're so very specific or what might be any detrimental effects of parallel operation of models that don't fall into that compatibility chart. If you have any insight, I'd be interested in having that information.

      Wow great comment, lots of info.
      I to had the champion 2000 model and loved how light and easy it was to throw around. But just a little louder and honestly I wanted a little more power.
      As far as why companies tell you to only run like generators I’m sure is for warranty and sales logistics only. The item you power doesn’t care where it comes from or how as long as it’s correct. And the generators only know how to out power out when a load is needed. So when a certain amount of draw is applied the inverter board will apply said load. And as long as the wave form matches the other gen and both are in phase then they probably don’t notice much difference. I’m sure if you put a in line oscilloscope on each gen then one after the parallel kit you could see if the is any distortion. If there isn’t or in falls with in spec then I’m sure you could do this all day long as long as both gens can put out clean enough power under loads.
      I’m sure some electrical genius could rig something up, or may already know.
      But in the end I think every company wants you to buy two. Why not males for better sales.

      @@johnnysweekends I recently added a Micro-Air EasyStart 364 to the Dometic 13.5 on our current camper and that's been a game-changer for warm weather boondocking. I'll likely still take along both EU2200i's, but the ability to stay cool with only one burning gas is pretty awesome.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  2 роки тому +1

      Yes I agree. They help a lot only problem is with a 15k unit you are almost maxed and running the gen as almost max capacity on those hot days. And even worse if some elevation comes into play. Honda could have made the 2200 into a 2500 watt unit and it probably would have been fine. But I have been carrying another unit around with me now. Same size as Honda but more power. But will still keep the Honda.

    Great video. I love how you showed the individual amps from each generator. Keep in mind to get that little extra out of the large generator you could plug say a hair dryer in locally to the larger generator bypassing the parallel connection, so all is not lost when you combine. As we know parallel generally will double the wattage of the small generator , once you exceed that the overload ligHt comes on.

      The two inverter outputs are hard bused together via the box he is using, doesn’t matter what particular socket you plug into be it the ones on the box or either unit panels. The two inverters see it and share proportionally based on rating, approx.

  • @leguirerj
    @leguirerj 3 роки тому +11

    This is interesting. It is supposed to be general knowledge that if you parallel generators of different wattage, the larger one is limited to the current of the smaller one. The smaller one starts to overload and its voltage starts to decrease. These Honda's seem to work on a percentage basis, so that they both contribute the same percentage of their capability to the load. They would have to be design that way. I have two EU2000i's one is a companion and an EU3000is. Making me think a bit.

      Did you Honda 1000 burn up it starts up but doesn't make any power? My helper had both generators running Honda 2200 and a Chinese 1000 inverter generator and plugged them in. The Chinese inverter 1000 almost locked the engine up. Pull start cord was extremely hard to pull almost to the point of breaking. You definitely couldn't start the Chinese 1000 watt inverter generator after that.

  • @andrewalaska

    Some explanation for why you can get full power out of two different sized generators. As the load increases from 0 to 100%, the voltage output drops from around 127 to 120. Since the voltage drop of the larger generator will be less at a given load, it will push more wattage, automatically balancing the load proportionally between the generators.

    • @robertp7209
      @robertp7209 Рік тому +1

      @@robertp7209 What @andrewalaska is describing is essentially correct. This is basically how the full-scale electric power grid works with power plants of different sizes and capabilities as well. Each source contributes differently based how capable it is of pushing the grid back towards the nominal voltage. The fact that the voltage at the tie point is the same so that each source sees almost the same voltage is exactly why this works. The key is that word "almost". The devil is in the details as they say.

    • @robertp7209

    I just paralleled a Honda eu10i with a Chinese SP Tools 4500. They played nice together. There was a Phantom draw of about 240W at 240V between the two running units without load attached. Maybe that is the missing amp you noticed. Was able to start and run a 3HP compressor. 5700W measured on start up 4500W from SP and 1200W from Honda. They load shared perfectly to do outputs on each then ran at 3000W with both gennys relaxing. I didn't see anything limiting me to only twice the smallest unit capacity.

      Well they comment was not exactly right. But from all the comments and groups I belong to many are having idle or low load issues with the 2200 and the newer model 3000 unit the inverter board looks to not be available to buy if it goes out so then its a paper weight, and the 2200 model is not lasting like the older 2000 models I guess. I sold my 3000 because I didn’t want to take a chance on a dead inverter then …now what. Honda is only good if you can replace the big parts. But is it worth replacing the parts if the generator is already pretty old and used. Or put your money into a new unit.
      The 3200 seems nice but man I can justify the price tag. It’s just crazy. You can buy several generators for that price. And since Honda has been using cheaper items in there units and truly not holding up like they used to, then is it really worth it..?
      Now people who have had problems with there Hondas I always ask what the problems are and what was done to see if its the unit or maybe the operator? So anyway that’s just what im seeing.
      I still have my 2200 but it doesn’t get used much as you can probably understand.

That consistent-voltage-leveling seems to be proportional to (a percentage of) their output capabilities. Cool! I'm curious if non-matched BRANDS would also have such good load sharing.

      The generators will put out full load. The parallel kit if gets to hot should or will trip the breaker.
      What you don’t wanna do is over load your Rv and burn up the wiring from high loads at max.
      It will probably support all 60 amps but for how long idk and you could possibly cook something in higher temps and sustained run times.

    I'm not very educated with generators or electronics but I was understanding most of this. Where I got confused was with the parallel kit, I saw there was a 50amp plug and 30amp plug. So you plugged into the 30amp plug and was running about 40amps so why didn't the 30amp plug trip on the parallel kit. I know the generator didn't trip because the load was shared and didn't go over 30amps on the individual generator but shouldn't the 30amp plug trip on the parallel kit..... thanks for the informative video!!!!!

      So even a 15 amp circuit can have a 20 amp pass thru but not long. The wiring in the parallel box is all the same I bet. A couple a I took apart are. But yes there is a 30 amp breaker on the 30 side but I bet it could hold 35 amp for a long time any above that I bet it would only be a matter of time till it tripped. You could use the 50 amp side to a 30 amp adapter but the same load will be on one wire if you use it that way for a 30 amp service trailer.

Sometimes the Microwave can drag the EU3000 down and trip it's breaker, sometimes not ...and it only does this while in ECO mode . 90% of the time, ECO mode is fantastic but i don't wana run full RPM all day when working on projects and things .

    • @robertp7209
      @robertp7209 Рік тому +3

      To add, you are not running the unit properly. The eco mode is for lighter steady loads, in general. The microwave is a substantial load, doesn’t matter how long it actually runs. So is most motors on tools, with added inrush current upon starting - is many multiples more that full load current. Same for refrigeration compressors. Eco allows the engine to run slower, not at a given synchronous constant speed like standard induction or synchronous generators do. That’s why they can be, in part quieter and more fuel efficient, but a lot more expensive to get same ratings. You can get a smaller and thus lower watt rated microwave, to try. Or turn off other loads before using microwave and tools, then turn those back on.

    Per your comment at 4:30 ….So if these various inverter generators sync up so easily electrically with each other at the same frequency etc. if a person were to accidentally connect their Honda generator in with the electric utility grid power would the Honda generator electrically sync automatically with the grid frequency or would the generator blow up or catch fire? @@johnnysweekends I appreciate the reply! I still don't understand why. You mention a head on collision - just trying to figure out how that would be different than the "head on collision" between the power of two generators running in parallel. Specifically when generator #2 is started the inverter must be detecting that there is already a ~120v 60hz current being fed through the parallel connections from generator #1 and matches that frequency. How would that be different than if generator #2 was getting grid power (which would also presumably be ~120v 60hz) via the parallel connections? Wouldn't gen #2 just match that grid frequency the same way as it would match the frequency from generator #1?

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Рік тому

      Lol Patrick your gonna hurt my head.

      Gen 2 is also the grid sending power down the line to meet up at the house.
      Power is terminated there ready for use.
      You can draw from the house but you can add to it. Like a suicide cord. Only meant to draw from.
      Why the two generators are able to talk to each in that way and be in sync is more for the engineers.

    Why do they tell you not to mix different sized generators when paralleling if they don't seem to mind any?

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  3 роки тому +3

      Because they want you to buy two of there product. When 95% of them are all the same engines and electronics. Except Honda and Yamaha. But most are so similar.

    I'm so confused now. I understand that both were sharing the amps but what about the watts? Since you paralleled the smaller are you limited to only the smaller watt capacity?

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  3 роки тому +1

      Amps x volts will give you the watts. But as shown I didn’t have two load meters one on each. But you can see we are easily providing more total power as the big Honda was giving out 23 amps and the small Honda almost 15 for a new total of about 35 amps and neither being over loaded.
      Verses with just the big Honda you had a max 23.3 amps running and max 25 amps.
      It’s the amps you pay attention to as you are limited to how ever many amps the generator is able to provide and you could see both gens were at about max amps for there rated running amps or watts.

      Yea power your house may be different depending what you want power and how your generator hook may be wired.
      You need to find out if it’s wired for 240 or just 120 and certain circuits. Because you may need a generator that’s 240volt capable. These are all 120.

      As far as a non inverter gen I don’t know if I would mix unless it’s a last option. Just because I don’t know if it would pose a problem with the eu3000 inverter board . I don’t think though but I wouldn’t do it.
      But yea lots of different gens can parallel to each other. I would mix several of the Chinese brands together but I don’t know if I would mix them with the Hondas.
      Kinda like iPhone knows when you plug a off brand microphone adapter or dongle, I think it fries them purposely after a few plug ins 😂
      Now several have been doing this with Hondas or other brands but one person on here for some reason had a issue with his pair and one of the units stopped putting out power…🤷‍♂️ no idea why or if the issue resolved. But also no idea the condition of the units or what box he plugged into.
      So just as a disclaimer one unsuccessful event but mainy successfully have. So just to be transparent.
      It’s just nice to know if the eu3000 isn’t enough, you can add on the kit and another gen for more power..👍🏼

      Whoa that is weird. Many people have been paralleling these units and even off brand units with the Hondas. Which that was one thing I advised against just because I would think Honda is a little more finicky with the inverters then maybe other units.
