    Love the content! Not sure where to begin but I’ve been looking forward to firing this old 105 hp Chrysler I recently found[surprisingly clean] but needs some attention.so far, I’ve rigged the ignition switch at the motor to eliminate bad wires and so forth, but still will only run for a brief second on starter fluid and only with the key in the on pos and by jumping the solenoid.Initially, I got spark on all cylinders with an in-line spark tester,but now I don’t seem to be getting spark on any cylinder. Compression is at 145-150psi. Cleaned out carburetors twice. Any tips would be appreciated! I suspect the timing may be off but I will also change the plugs is weekend and go from there since I don’t believe fuel delivery to be the issues since I’ve changed it! Thanks in advance!

    Hi Captain, I have a 79 mercury 115 with no spark. I just got it. The previous owner replaced stator but not sure what else they did. I’m not sure if it’s a bad kill switch, trigger, cdi, coils etc. I see a black wire down by the cdi with tape rapped around it. Do you have a diagram or know where to get one. I’m not good with electric at all but willing to learn.

    I'm getting no fire to any plugs on a 1997 Suzuki DT115 with less than a 100 hours on it. Mines turning over but its getting no fire to the plugs, from my understanding of the Factory Manual it could be the Pulsar Coil, the Trigger, the Gear Count Coil, the Stator or the CDI Unit. I wish there was a video on how to test all the different parts to know for sure what to replace.

      @@JayMuzz-xn3rv It's been a while like about a year but after spending $150 for a Factory Manual I had to get the Voltage tester leads to add to my Multi-meter to test everything and it turns out it was my CDI Unit. I later found out when I let my step father use the boat for the summer he jumped the battery instead of taking it out and charging the battery and he hooked up the jumper cables wrong shorting out the CDI. So, at a $3200 new CDI replacement cost I took the motor off took the boat to a Boat Dealer and dropped $12,000 on a new Tohatsu 115 with 5 year warranty. The Suzuki is sitting in my shop today and I hope to sell it one day. I'll never buy another Susuki boat motor again.

    I have an early '90's 175HP mercury outboard and one ear broke off the propeller (didn't hit anything) drove it back with alot of vibration for 10miles and suddenly the motor completely stopped. I have no spark anywhere now and motor wont start but turns. I did a visual inspection and no wires broke off. Had a mechanic look at it and he stated it might be a fried ECM , three wires that looked like they melted and or bad coils. (I don't think he did a well Diagnostic on the motor.
    While reading through the comments it looks like a bad CDI box , Stator or trigger.
    My worst case scenario a bad piston ring fell. I'm not that great with electrical. Any help would be appreciated

    Hi nice Video,im from Germany.
    I have Mercury 50ps 2takt from 1992, only Spark on one Cylinder.
    When i change wires to coils,the Spark goes to another Cylinder.
    The Spark is not strong.
    I measure the Stator and one of wires is no passage to other wire.
    So the Stator must be Broken?
    But i hear when have Spark than it’s Not the Stator 🤷‍♂️
    U have idea?

    • @CAPTAINWILLY
      @CAPTAINWILLY  4 роки тому

      The stator put out a/c voltage. 4 wires. And 2 colors. While cranking check voltage in those wires. One color should have 30ish volts ac. And the other color should have over 100 volts a/c. Thats the only way to test the stator. Test with wires off of the cdi box.

    • @CAPTAINWILLY
      @CAPTAINWILLY  4 роки тому

      The spark mived when you switched coil signal. So your coils are good. Try moving the trigger wires to another coil pole on the cdi box. Using 1 trigger to trigger the a cylinder. If you still dont have spark on the bad cylinder when you move a known good trigger. The cdi box is bad

      Thtwo yellow. Not realted to spark. The black is ground. The blue and the red should have ac voltage on them. One at 30ish volts ac and the other over 100 volts ac if you dont have that check for broken wires. If none found replace stator

One cylinder barely working at idle when plug wire pulled off while running. Things i checked...115 compression...coil swap...plug wire swapped... Fuel pump checked.. carbs swapped (2 double barrel).. sprayed carb cleaner into bad carb throat no effect but kills other side of double carb when sprayed into it.. checked spark with timing light looks like others..ran it with the plug out just blows warm air no water or fuel..plug is never very wet after running just lightly wet.. cleaned the carbs.. still not picking up that weak cylinder. Please let me know what you think. Edit... Ok i switched the power packs no change.. when i spray starting fluid in carb upper and lower it gets boggy.. also bogs when priming bulb or pushing in key for choke.

    I have a 2002 merc 75 hp 4stroke. only 2 and 4 have sparks on. 1and 3 do not have sparks. I am going to need to replace all the wires and give it another try tomorrow If I can find 804271T in stock with all the dealers here on the island. If not, I will have to wait for the eBay guy to ship to me.... If there is still a problem ( not geting sparks on 1and 3) I will hate to replace the stator and It IS a pain in the ass to get the flywheel nut off( I had to ask to plumber guy to use his ranch where he gets off the 2" pipe off) and then get a KMS tool( $30 )to take the wheel off( I think it is called a flywheel puller). Extended cranking on my bad costed me a $300 starter, another $280 for those two sets of coil wires, and I do not want to spend another $300 on the stator..... You video is good information and is helping me to regain my confidence after I lost power on the water last week..... I am from Canada but has not so fluent english writing skills.

      Your writing was great. A little tip for ya. Find a big tough angry dude and a long pipe. Put the pipe on your wrench and make the big guy hold it tight on the flywheel nut. Then tap the starter. Cranking the engine should rotate the nut the right way to loosen it.

      Only spark on two cylinders.
      Attack one at a time. Trade coil wires on the cdi box from #2 to#1. If you now have spark on #1 coils are good
      Put it all back.
      Then trade trigger wires from #1 to#2. If no spark on #2 then you need a trigger. If spark on number 2 then you need a stator. Make shur to test voltage input to the cdi from the stator

    • @CAPTAINWILLY

      Yes. By trading around known good trigger wires amd get spark out of corresponding coil outputs the stator and cdi are good amd the trigger is bad. Hello there boat Community!
    I hope someone see’s this, I recently got into boats and motors and am trying to repair a 4 stroke merc 6hp 2007, which has been standing for about 1-2 Years.
    But as I dont really know too much im having some troubles, theres no spark, (already changed oil, Spark plug and gasoline) so I thought it was the Coil, so I brushed that real clean of most rust, sadly I dont have an Ohm reader to test it.
    My guess is that the kill switch cables are the problem though, would you have some procedures or tips to finding what my motor wants and or needs, thank you in advance. I do not have the money to let a professional look at it or buy any expensive spare parts.
    Have a nice day.

      Guessing will be expensive. Go down to harbor freight and get a dvom. Digital voltage ohm meter. You will meed to test continuity between both wires on the kill switch in both positions. 000.= engine off postion. Open=engine run.
      Fair warning. Boat is an acronym. Bust out another thousand. It can be cheap but when things brake its usually at least 200 bucks... Every time

    So I'm having a problem with my outboard Mercury 50 horsepower 2-stroke engine and a few people have said that they think one of my cylinders is not getting spark.
    Can you take a look at some videos I put up under my site and see if you think the same thing that one of my cylinders spark plugs is not getting spark.
    It could be any one of a number of things maybe bad fuel line, maybe bad fuel, maybe a bad pulse bulb, but I'd be curious to see if you think its cylinder issue.

    • @CAPTAINWILLY
      @CAPTAINWILLY  6 років тому

      JB JB . hey there. I just watched all of your videos. Yes. Deffently a spark issue. Heres what im going to recommend.
      Write this down.
      1. Get the problem to happen when running
      2. While problem is happing take some needle nose plyers amd remove each spark plug wire one at a time.
      3. If the engine dies or runs much worse. Them that plug is not an issue.
      4. Continue for the rest of the plugs until removing a wire dosnt change the condition.
      5. While it hasnt changed the condition amd the wire is off hold it close to the end of the plug or the block or a ground amd see if a spark jumps from the wire to ground.
      6. Contact me.

      CAPTAIN WILLY'S FISHING ADVENTURES okay got it the only other thing I wanted to add is that the engine seems to have an easier time starting when it's in an upright position rather than all trimmed all the way down I'm not sure if that's an indication that it's more carburetor related or not but I thought I would let you know.
      I really have no idea what it could be one when I feel like I finally have narrowed it down something will happen that will make me completely rethink whether I have the correct answer or not so I'm really just Flying Blind here trying to figure this out.

    • @jrbz88
      @jrbz88 6 років тому

      CAPTAIN WILLY'S FISHING ADVENTURES Okay so went out and purchased and inline spark tester and put it on all three and all three had an excellent spark.
      So I don't think it's a cylinder. If it helps any - when I first started the boat after not touching it for a week it started up perfect Idol perfect no problems at all it sounded like a new boat then it slowly deteriorated after about 10 minutes. Then it stalled and then I couldn't start it for about 10 minutes. So I'm not sure if that's indicative of a carburetor or not but that's what it did today anyway.
      It's worth mentioning that I also went out and purchased a $30 Mercury pulse bulb and put that on in replacement of the old one in hopes that it would help but it didn't seem to make a difference.

    • @PwayJOE911
      @PwayJOE911 6 років тому

      JB JB did you test the spark again after it started to deteriorate after the 10 minutes?

    • @jrbz88
      @jrbz88 6 років тому

      Negative....I would just connect the inline spark tester , start the engine, walk to the back of the boat and check the tester. i did this for all three spark plugs and that was it.
      Did I do it incorrectly? Should I have waited for the engine to start acting up? I just figured that as long there was a good spark there then that was not the problem.
      Let me know what you think.

      Colby Zern. So yes a multimeter will be needed. Sence you have one cylinder that has spark. Use That to your advantage. Follow your wires for identification. Coil wires. Stator wires. And trigger wires. Trigger wires will be between the coil wires.
      Swap the coil wires on the cdi. You said spark on two. So use the coil output on the cdi box to test other coils.
      Hooking up coil 3 on the coil 2 spot if coil 3 sparks then coils are good.
      Next test trigger. Swap trigger for 3 onto number 2 post on the cdi. This is testing the trigger. Like having one good post on the cdi. Test multible parts with that post.

      Okay so i did that. we tried a lot of things but then we found that the spark plug wires are corroded so i cleaned them up and we know have spark on 3 cylinders so we are going to try to replace the top cylinder coil and pray that it works thanks ill let you know.

      No spark on any cylinder? And you have ac voltage on all stator wires?

    • @CAPTAINWILLY
      @CAPTAINWILLY  4 роки тому

      If there is ac voltage from the stator like i said in the video. Yet no spark anywhere. You need to test resistance across the trigger. Depending on how many trigger wires you have/ cylinders you have. There are lots of videos how to test a trigger. But its likly a bad cdi box. Usually when a trigger fails its only on one cylinder or two. Total loss of spark is more like the cdi. Only replace it if the trigger tests good

      I just fixed my Johnson 110. It would run great when cold but when it was warmed it would run like crap. Hard warm start. Had air, fuel and compression was 115 across the board. It was the power pack. Replaced and now she hits 32 mph on 20ft chapperal at 5100 rpms

  • @Email.ilike-titsAtHotmail.c0m

    Ok little confused.. you said the stater is to convert A/c to D/c to charge batt. Then you said the stater was to give the power pack charge. Will a motor start if there is a bad stater? And what about rectifier, will motor still start with bad rectifier?

    • @CAPTAINWILLY
      @CAPTAINWILLY  Рік тому +1

      Ok sorry. There are two winding in a stator. One the powers the cdi for spark. And another that feeds the rectifier. Then power gos from rectifier to battery. Bad rectifier engine will run with no battery charge. Bad stator on the cdi side no start. Bad stator on the rectifier side will start.

      @@CAPTAINWILLY Thank you!
      It did finally attempt to start and when it did I noticed the flywheel changed direction to counter clockwise not sure why Maybe I have the stator on wrong I need to rotate it one bolt hole IDK you have any idea? And there is only 2wires coming out of stator I don’t think I got them hooked up wrong.
      Working on 1979 Mariner 115hp in line 6 tower of power.
      When I try to start it flywheel is rotating clockwise (normal) rotation I believe, then when it attempts to fire up flywheel changes direction. Haven’t ran it that way don’t want to miss it up.
