That little fly wheel trick really works. Just accomplished. Back in the day, if you didn't know the right person things could be frustrating. Keep them coming.
My first encounter with a series Land Rover was a 2.6 NADA in 1971. It wasn't until 1984 when I acquired an 88 when I had my first hands on with a 2.25 engine. Since then I have had 7 of them and loved them.
They are a pretty good motor - especially the 5 bearing version I have a feeling that the metal used in blocks was a lot better than the 3 bearing ones - they were quit soft needing rebores at an early age Same goes for Tdi - they were quite good blocks
Excellent video I’m very much looking forward to this Series ! I like the 2.25 engines both diesel and petrol ! It’s a lot Lot lot cleaner inside than my 3.5 rover was. Amazing work as ever Mike
I had one of these in my first 90 , it was well knackered . It was doing about 7mpg when I pulled it out and put a 2.5TD in , couldn't put a TDI in as they were pretty much still brand new then.
Landies of that era give me the heeby-jeebies. I think Noah had a 2.25 LR engine in his Ark and they used the same basic design for every 4 pot petrol AND diesel engine up until the 200tdi. I had a 90 2.5TD and knowing it was designed as a 2.25 petrol engine (with much lower compression-ratio) didn't inspire much confidence. The crank died after a couple of years and, fortunately, I worked for a company with a fleet of LRs and I was allowed to take a fancy new(ish) 300tdi engine out of a crashed 110 and stick it into my 90.
ace,! always the unexpected when you take the head off! ive just changed my head on my 5 brg engine ,sent it to turners to get gas flowed, i got a few years ago with 27k on clock ,now 49k,very little wear on the bores, turner head makes big difference ,got high flow "silencer" from ACR , pulls strong ,ive a recon SU HIFF 44 c/w kit from HNJ to go on next,to replace that tiny 34mm weber, nasty thing ...so expecting 90bhp plus?, after its all done, only trouble ,ive just the 235/85tyres to help with gearing ,so think overdrive or 3,54 diffs, what do you think?
Hi Mike, Not related to this video but to do with one you had a 'breathing engine' you took the top off the injector pump and it was full of oil. Well I did the same on my 200 tdi and it too was full of oil. Now I also took off the waist gate actuator as the pipe goes in to the top and sure enough that was full too! so that's one worth checking in the future.
Regarding putting the bolts in a freezer bag so you can loose them all at once. Can I suggest putting your 10mm socket in the same bag to save time later.
No aftermarket crossflow alloy heads? Someone made them for B series. Interesting engine history. I'm wondering if this was the engine in my friends P_ Rover, but it was the model before the SD.
Great project, Mike. Watching this one keenly as a S3 owner with a mighty 2.25. The hp rating fools a lot of people into underestimating them, but these little engines have grunt and just won't quit. Mine has never let me down, even once with a spark issue that had it only firing on 2 cylinders she still got me home. One advantage, the Series 3 is about 500kg lighter than the Defender, so the hp/weight ratio is better. One day I would like to swap in an LT77 or R380 5-speed to improve highway driving. Any tips on doing that, or would an overdrive be a better choice?
@@mattluszczak8095 give me $2000 to buy one plus another $2000 for shipping and duties to import one to Kenya, bud. Does that make economic sense, bud?
Mike. Were the last of these 2.25 N/A's rated at about 60Hp at the flywheel ? ? The clutch housing looks gigantic for such a short and stubby engine sir ! ! V.
Typical bloody yorkie! A box of freezer-bags costs about a quid and he's advising people to go to the trouble of washing old ones so they can re-use them!

Exactly!
Perfect! As a series owner I'm taking notes! ;-)
Please do!
Mike, is it wierd to say I love you. I’m currently rebuilding my 2.25 5 main bearing petrol for my 1984 90. I really needed some notes 😁
Stripping is easy - cleaning and putting back together is the boring/tricky bit!
I look forward to the rest of the videos for this "project" 😀
More to come!
Very nice to see video’s on the petrol 2.25. Get to know my little engine better.👍
More to come!
Best engine Land Rover ever made, they will go on forever with some maintenance.
Doing one of these in the coming months. Looking forward to the next instalment.

The only thing more fun than taking an engine apart is putting it back together and watching it run.
Dave - just for you - I sand blasted the crank!
Coming soon!

Have fun matey.
Too late!

Yes it is a sign of too much pressure in the crank cases

Do you have a video about replacing the camshaft of a 2,25
no i but I will for re installing

Alloy heads and Land Rovers? Not a very good story..

Oh yes. Interesting. 👍🏻😊
Glad you think so!
Ha ha ha, when you pulled the head off, I thought, oops... and you said it... Shame though, the rest looks nice..

When did Series LR's start using the 5 bearing 2.25 petrol engine?
in 1980

@@royblackburn1163 I came looking for the Yorkshire comment and I wasn't disappointed.
