"Iris" owes a lot to session guitarist Tim Pierce. He created the mandolin and guitar solo in that song. He's excellent.
you are correct... i think the polishing of this song was all tim pierce..
Tim Pierce was everywhere. He’s like the Forrest Gump of guitar…
Yep.....without Tim Pierce's ideas, this song is totally different. The mandolin, the slide work. He's been a part of some great songs, but this, by his own admission, is the biggest one.
Tim Pierce’s contribution is amazing
Tim Pierce is excellent and added some great stuff to this song. All songs owe a lot to the production though, that's the way it is.
The 2002 Disney movie, ‘Treasure Planet’ introduced me to Goo Goo Dolls and songs like ‘Iris’ and ‘I’m Still Here’ which are one of my favorites up until now.
Yeah, the soundtrack grew close to my heart as I get older.
Until now?
Such a great movie
That's an incredible song
I played this song at a gig and then proposed to my wife immediately after. It'll be 18 years in August.
This needs more likes. That’s amazing…congrats my guy.
How about props to Tim Pierce who wrote and played the mandolin and lead guitar parts. On the fly even!
Johnny Rzeznik, one of the best song writers ever!
My favorite one is ''Here is Gone''.
Mine too! It’s massively underrated
I agree. the video of them playing it on a train in alaska reveals how powerful a kick ass rocker has. the women in that video are in a trance and dont even know it. it is such a talent. thankfully, he uses his talent. I am glad that I live near him. he did a great front porch song video when this pandemic first occurred. My family member got covid when this first occurred and i was glad he stepped up to help. My friend spent time at a recording studio to have fun. I told him John lives near us. We joked that we would cajole him to come to Hazlet to jam for fun. Good on you johnny
That one would always be next to "Big Machine" on a lot of my playlists ;)
I love "Iris". It's the one that really made me love Goo Goo Dolls, although "Name" introduced me to them. I love "The City of Angels" movie.
I was a huge fan of the soundtrack, more so than the actual movie...
I'm 66 yrs old and have loved the goo goo dolls since they first started.
John rzeznik is a Genius ......THE EMOTIONS on his lyrics and music so amazing
The Goo Goo Dolls - Iris [Official Live In Buffalo, NY] is probably one of the greatest live music videos ever made. BAR NONE
Agreed. I love it and watch it occasionally still in a mix we have on UA-cam with my daughter. She loves songs that she doesn’t even realize are so old. =]
I agree! The rain, the crowd… it’s amazing.
This song is John's Mona Lisa! This song is an epic hit, that will never be forgotten.
My son is almost 7 and I have introduced him to a lot of music but he will ask for the Goo Goo Dolls by name
I will be doing the same for my children!!!
@@sissyray greatest gift to our children is an appreciation of music
@@Goatslife657 you bet it is! My parents raised me on a number of different genres and I really like all different styles and artists (jazz, rock, country, classical, hip hop, R&B, alternative, pop, international music) because of what I was exposed to early, at least in part
The harder i work, the luckier i get, what genius!!!
The PURE & honest evolution of this band is simply BRILLIANT. Johnny's writing is the most poetic on the planet.. GO GOO GOOS...They only get better with age.
That song slaps the hell out me 😂
So cool to see artists from younger generations give guys like Rzeznik the respect he deserves with interviews like this. John is super humble, and so is Tom. Bravo on this great video
Yes- that song would be a hit in any era
found this song when i got divorced ...it reminded me of me watching the guy perform in in the pouring rain in buffalo was so iconic ....i related so much to the pain
I agree 100% the song is bigger than the movie. Love love my John 😍 dont ever stop making great songs, you are an amazing songwriter, one of the greats in my honest opinion and still crazy gorgeous☺ love my GGD 😍
If you deny what you’re “wired” to do - for ANY reason - your whole world comes apart. I honestly believe this. And I believe that the most tragic thing that can happen in this world is that most people have no choice in the matter, despite all the one-liners about being true to yourself or defying expectations. Most people just don’t have the opportunity to do the things they were meant to do.
100% true
What if you dont know what your wired to do in the first place
Nice interview... Iris was ONCE among my favorite Goo Goo Dolls song (always rotated between Iris, Slide, & Black Balloon depending on my mood). Then, I'm Still Here came out and to this day = hands down #1! Such an underrated song!
I love "Iris"". I'm 59 and my daughter just got me starting to listen to goo goo dolls. John seem so down to earth.
The GooGoo Dolls music will stand the test of time. Johnny’s song writing hits a persons emotions on every level. I like listening to Johnny and just his acoustic guitar best. Got see them this year, and it was incredible!
I LOVE listening to successful artists talking about their craft. Seriously, I could listen to this sort of thing every day. Thanks, guys. For everything.
Agree wholeheartedly
So happy that you still love to play Iris for us. I love the mix of all your songs on the set list. Can’t wait to see you again 💕
I love the hit of the mandolin & guitar moment on Iris. Definitely pierce the lyrics to your soul.
I just wanna share my little peculiar story to this song "Iris"
I was born in August year 1997 where that year this song was being created/hit too. As far as I could remember, I think I heard this song when i was still unconscious kid and since I haven't known many words before, I just keep remembering the guitar moment and hum it whenever I gets in trouble to comfort myself (during my abused years) then only had my sense of being when I was 5 years old when I finally found it on the radio again being played and finally understand the lyrics and what's the title of the song really was. I had so many memories with this song (mostly are painful) but it's the only song that can comfort me so whenever I need to get reminded how truly strong i was and never gonna be alone no matter what may happened again after all I've been through, this is my just to go song.
then on my college days, I just found out that it was originally for the movie soundtrack of "City Angels" and surprisingly that song was being played before that accident then 😭 i f* cried so hard again since I met and lost someone important in my life the same in the story too and had to go on in life for him like it's my own fault too so I need to be his substitute like too to continue what he left me to keep.
Johnny,
Thank you for sharing a little about yourself and being transparent about your life. I absolutely enjoy your music and I’m entirely grateful and blessed that you were able to speak through me when I couldn’t find the words to say. It saved me more times than ever and I’m so thankful to you.
Johnny Rzeznik one of the best songwriters ever!
Name is one of my fav songs of all time!
I feel a connection to Johnny. we're both both Polish Boys with our roots in the east side of Buffalo NY, born on Dec 5.
John speaks complete language of love, insofar as recovery. Gratitude is an Attitude ... I hear it in nearly every conversation/interview, the recovery language, and I love it! The lyrics are sprinkled with program language as well, so inspiring. Thanks for posting this.
Yes. The strings in Iris work very nicely. Iris is so strong, it holds up under any type of production or instrumentation.
I didn’t think I would like both of their personalities as much as I did. They both seem like amazing people. I definitely didn’t think I’d watch the whole video. I did.
"That part' of the song"...with the thing, the dadadada~dadadada~da-da-dah...I think was an unconcious Zeppelin 'nod'...and it's perfect. Timeless song dude.
“It’s very Buffalo of me to say that” ❤️❤️
hey guys, good interview I like both songs iris and Delilah.
Perhaps strangely, I've never, ever seen the film. The song, however...when it came out I was ALL about music, writing poetry and was working full time - never went to see films at the cinema, didn't watch much TV etc. But the song, when it first met my ears it was love at first "hear" lol. Never fallen out of love with it either, still love it just as much as the first time I heard it. I have a deep gratitude for musicians and song writers, for their talent and their words, their dedication to their craft and to as near perfection as anyone can ever get. All of which have so often helped me to say things throughout my life which I could not put into words myself.
It is funny how life changes. Where once, some people would be reduced to tears, or laughter, reading my poetry, nowadays I seem to have lost the ability and desire to write any more. It's funny how the most profound experiences in life, both happy and sad, can usually invoke some of the best work you'll ever write, whatever your forte. Heartbreak, yearning, new found love, death, birth, marriage, and many other things. But if you are trying too hard, it just never comes. I think I used to write my way through life experiences. I think in my late 40's I have become too comfortable, too settled - if there is such a thing. Although, re-reading some of my material from my late teens and early 20's, I think I'm quite happy with "boring and comfortable", to be honest! Because it seems my best work came from a place of utter pain, for the most part.
Sometimes I think I'd like a time machine to go back, but then I realise that we can sometimes tend to look at life through rose coloured spectacles. When I hit 40, I suppose I had a minor yearning for past times, but now, I have finally developed a confidence in my ability to stand up for what I believe is right, no matter what anyone else may say or think, and a general sense of comfort in the direction my life has taken. Having children is a profound experience, and it completely changes your life and sense of purpose, I've found. Perhaps, when you are getting nearer the tail end of life, suddenly all the things which seemed to matter years ago become quite superficial to you, and you get to realising what is truly important in life. If anyone is still reading this and hasn't fallen asleep yet(!), I wish you all the best. Remember to try to enjoy and embrace whatever stage of life you are at, because it makes you the unique person you are, and don't be afraid of being "uniquely you" - that's why you're here. The jigsaw puzzle of life as a whole has many different shaped pieces and it needs all of us, you included, to complete it. Just be you. Much love. ❤
Dive in sounds like a song title for one of these awesome dads!
Name was my first love. Love John's music so much. And I looove Delilah.
"It's very Buffalo of me to say that"
Literally can't get enough of how much he still embraces home

The song iris is my favorite song from The Goo Goo Dolls and I really love the movie City of Angels.
Amazing=John Rzeznik ❤
Thank you both for an excellent conversation. Love your music! It was great to get a glimpse of who you really are. Iris is one of my favorite songs and the line …” you can’t fight the tears that ain’t coming” is spot on the money! Wish you continued health and success!
Appreciate the honesty
The funny thing about Iris is that its not about any woman named Iris. Johnny said he was struggling to find a name for this song, so he just called it whatever first came to his mind. The word Iris was always in the back of his mind as a possible lyric to a song, so he just decided to call it Iris. It was a really clever move by John because it made the song more memorable. Is Iris about a woman in Johnny's life or is Iris about a woman in the film City of Angels. Iris will always be associated with the City of Angels soundtrack thanks to Johnny and his brilliant lyrics.
Having never seen the film, but having first heard the song, and then having seen only the music video after, I had so many thoughts about it. They're all pretty much completely and utterly wrong from the writer's point of view, but that's what I love about lyrics and poetry, they can have so many interpretations and meanings depending upon the listener/reader. My original thoughts back in the day were about the iris being part of the eye, the eye being the lens to the physical world, the way they had him looking through telescopes in the video, and the part about not wanting the world to SEE him ("me"). Then, I thought an iris is also a flower, so was he comparing the subject of his love to a beautiful flower... I love exploring lyrics. Then finding out afterwards how the writer actually came about writing them is fascinating. And sometimes it can be quite funny, because sometimes we can fit lyrics so heavily into our own way of thinking that we completely miss the original perspective of the writer. I did that with a local band once, but we had a jolly good laugh about how wayyyy off my interpretation of their lyrics was lol. Always fun to explore and learn.
@@randomnesspersonified Your take on it with the iris being our lense to the world really fits the theme of the song, thats a beautiful way to look at it!
I love that man ad love hi is music its epic for our time 👌🎼🎸🎸🎹🥁♾
You both are fabulous in this conversation...nice you are wired for music!
Wonderful, that because everything so complicated but only your heart voice source of the best way to heard .. Priceless
Great chat 🙌
A very rare insight coming from a great inspiring artist..John,you are one of the best and one of a kind..the Goo Goo Dolls will always be my top band..thank you!!!!
Great podcast. Love the goo
Great interview.
I would DEFINITELY come see you 10 times on one tour if I could afford it. I did come see you twice in 2019 and twice in 2022. Got my tix for 2023 Summer tour so far 🥰
Johnny has the gift of making himself LOVED by his fans..like he is our family...a few others can do this: David Grohl & Paul McCartney,, also Keith Richards....but when we listsen to him EXPOSE his spirit...we live his life vicariously and for me, its a wonderful gift...thank you John.
Love Johnny in a respect way awesome person
Hey I love both of your music. I’m writing my first project but I really love this idea for a podcast great idea💡
Great artist .🏆
I can’t wait to hear this!
This is my favorite song, ever! And that’s coming from someone who’s been singing their entire life.
IMO, the best movie song there is, I just think it’s perfect. And there are tons of amazing movie tracks.
John you seem so authentic followed the band so long. So handsome with a mask
how kool is this to have him talk to you wow.
My first Goo Goo Dolls concert in Detroit was with Plain White Ts and Daughtry. Awesome 🤩
That sounds amazing! What a lineup 👏
@@ambermassey2994 It really was AMAZING! 🥰
excelent!!!
That is cool.
Just Imagine being the woman “Iris” was written about 😯.
She doesn't care dude
It was literally written for the character Meg Ryan played in City of Angels movie
Crazy tuning on this song
I watched the whole thing, hoping to glean some info on why or how he used or found that tuning, but nothing! He asked about the frickin' time signature, but didn't bother to ask about the tuning. If this were Marty Friedman, Satriani, or Vai, there'd be a whole video on JUST the tuning, but since Johnny isn't a shredder or a "guitar guy" we don't get that level of detail, somehow. Odd.
@@toodark6 Not sure if you’ve seen this, but it elaborates on the tuning.. ua-cam.com/video/i611ZPzE_6k/v-deo.html
I absolutely love that, and many other GGD songs. Black balloon…I was in high school and a hopeless romantic, sooo…lol
And in Jiu-Jitsu we have a similar saying. The harder I train, the luckier I get.
It’s 2022 and I F’N love this channel! I just found you and I love this. I’m gonna have to binge watch them all.
Interviewing Johnny was fantastic! I connect to so many of Johnnys songs like Name and Iris but I do wish Johnny would sing I’m Still Here at live shows. It’s such a beautiful song.
Agree. But he is not allowed to play that song based on a contract.
@@kennygo8423 why not?
@@HeatherWho11.10 copyright thing
❤️❤️❤️
Ahhh wish their was more details about the song I mean the dam thing is in all dropped D ALL STRINGS PRETTY MUCH like how u come up with that
Not to many remember the movie...but EVERYONE knows the song....mission accomplished.
Just think Taylor Swift made a song all about the history of her house. Inspiration comes from any where. Love both songs!
Both you guys are just cool as fuk! Chill chill.
Is the Made To Be Broken line in Iris a nod to Soul Asylum?
Here because Nipsey Hussle said this is one of his favorite songs
Fuck right. Thank you.
The body language at the beginning of the video was interesting, while Johnny was talking about his “hopefully only” divorce and then pulling on his wedding ring…
I noticed that too. Little trouble in paradise maybe
The goo goo dolls do have a few great tunes..
I want to see the stuff that was cut out. Lol
Alguém legenda essa porra em Pt - Br kkkk
My god man, just let yourself age.
"Hi guys, it's John Lennon from the band "The Beatles", and "I FN Love How Every Band After Us Falls Short of Our Album Sales and No.1 Hits 🤣".
27:57 💜
I was defensive for the Goo Goo Dolls for selling out when Gutterower came out, and here I am, 20 years later, hating every GGD album since then for them truly selling out. I’ve tried to enjoy every album since then and I just can’t. They’re way too safe, way too conformist to trends. But I understand that people grow older and develop new interests. However, I still bang out to 1990-1998 Goo Goo Dolls.
I thought that was Jhon Lennon on the left in the thumbnail.
Is that john lennon?
I asked the same hehehe
Iris has 412 Million views on UA-cam without bot views like Bieber and Minaj.
Why isn't the guy on the left playing John Lennon in a movie?
his face
I love many of their tunes and honestly Iris is one that I'm not a huge fan of. Name though, great tune.
