  • In this video we do the first maintenance on the car to get to know it a bit better, and take it on a camping trip with some other Model As and Ts in Bridgeport California. Camping at Willow Springs Resort, with a trip down to the Bodie ghost town.

    I have the same car. Just stick with the non-synchro gearbox and after a while you wont even notice it.

    I could listen to that tick-over all day long, a lovely survivor, showing it's life in the modifications made by previous owners, no restoration needed, keep up the good work

    Your Briggs body Town Sedan sounds good. Re no oil filters in the era ; the oils were just basic [ either 20W or 40W] with no additives & Ford said change every 500 miles, so a filter would have been overkill. Put in any cheap modern oil for older motors. You should have drained the radiator & ran a running hose through the sytem. Do it a couple of times after driving it. That will explain why it threw water out the cap when up the hills. Get that wheel crack welded or find another good wheel. Looks like the up draft is running too rich ; you may consider returning it to the original down draft & then you can adjust the fuel mixture. Model A will perform just as good with original manifold & carb. & you can chuck that fuel pump. Those Motometer water gauges are more ornamental than practical. They react from steam at the filler & when it goes red, it is already boiling. Re spark plugs, they will run on old plugs ; I run 90 year old original type plugs made in the '30's , no problems. Keep the points clean & at correct gap. I have 2 Model As, one is like yours but rhd & Down Under. Cheers from NZ.

    Great video. Nice to see you enjoying that sweet ride. Detergent oil is made to keep particles in suspension so that they will be removed by the oil filter. Without an oil filter the engine should run straight weight oil so the particles will settle into the pan. Of course, you will find that it doesn’t really matter what oil you use. The model A motor won’t care. It also doesn’t need high zinc oil. Run whatever 30W or 10W30 oil you like and enjoy the ride. The worst motor oil today is better than the best oil produced in 1930.

    'Detergent' motor oil has an additive that 'grabs' and holds onto dirt particles. It requires a filter to remove that dirt, otherwise it just keeps recirculating thru your engine. Non-detergent does not have this additive if coarse and when it sits still the dirt settles to the bottom of the pan. As long as it doesnt pile up to high the pump does not pick it up to be recirculated. Now l did say dirt, it could also be small particles of metal as well. Like sand. Recirculating around in your oil galley, main bearings, timing gear/chain, dip pan and rod bearings, piston walls and rings! Kinda makes ya wanna pull that pan and clean everything out with some kerosene and start over! Happy motoring!

    Sounds great! Way to go! Driving my A in downtown Sacto was miserable with stops at every intersections. Full stop to get into first every block. Looking forward to driving it up in the hills.

    Best to add the filter kit or change oil every 500 miles .

    That idle is fantastic, I wish mine idled that well lol! You can hear every individual power stroke since she idles so low

      @@MotherlodeMotors no need to rev it so high to take off. First gear is very low and these cars make 130 lbs ft of torque

      The throttle linkage/spring assembly is between the engine and firewall. The springs often wear out and the axles get stuck cause nobody greases them properly. Happy motoring and enjoy your car!@@MotherlodeMotors

    Running on the Stromberg 97 is an oldschool way of hot rodding in the day. What you have is a 4 banger hot rod. You didn't say whether or not the head is a high compression head or not. My 4 banger uses a Stromberg 81 and I have had great performance with it. It is an original 81 and I have read that it is preferred for the 4 cylinder over the 97. Of course the Zenith carb would be a good choice to go back to.

    Recommend original zenith carb. Go back to gravity feed. Never sandblast plugs. The inside left over sand shorts the electrodes. Just an old dental pick would be enough to scrape electrode on plugs. Remember! Factory carb! Tthese are just my opinion so if they dont work im sincerely sorry. Hope this help. Bye😅

    I fell in love with my 1930 model a Tudor 9 years ago and still can't get enough time with it . Driving every weekend having to much fun!

    I think the best oil to use is oil designed for diesel engines since it contains more zinc.

    I use detergent oil in mine without issue. However, I think the previous owner did too. You might drop the pan and clean everything up, then start with the detergent a little at a time. I use Penn Grade racing oil, since it has vitamins and minerals. And it's green, which I think is pretty entertaining. If you ever go back to standard ignition, a good Model A friend of mine in Dallas set mine at 28degrees before TDC when fully advanced. After I start the car, I pull it all the way advanced and don't need to mess with it at all, unless I get bored. It will idle in the Model A way when fully retarded.

    Bring up the idle a little, and adjust the carb.

    You get used to double clutching, I would not change the gearbox, it becomes second nature. Give it time.

    The alt pully is wrong. Well it doesn't even look like pully. The old belts are b or c size and the alt pully is i think an a. I am running a modern alt with the a size pully and a b size belt. It well eat it in time.

    3 miles to Bodie, and all 3 miles is that tooth jarring washboard. I have had a dog in there no problem. I wonder why they changed the rules.

    I have watched a few items on oil and have found detergent oil is fine. I seen one Model A engine rebuilder who would not warranty the engine unless it was 15w40 oil detergent. I use detergent oil in my model a with no problems

    Start takig things apart. Rebuild your carb and weld that wheel. Learn learn leatn your car. You can do it.

    That's very cool! It would be cool to see this beautiful car resto-modded to keep the feel of an old car but put an automatic gear, A/C and heater, and Bluetooth radio, and maybe some sound deadening!

      @@markosterman419 I mean driving it as is would be just fine and interesting too, and keeping it virgin, but I bet it gets old. It can be turned into a daily driver if you make some covert resto-modding that doesn't permanently change the core of the car and is reversible, you'd still have the essential feeling of driving a vintage car but it's just be a bit faster and less of a hassle. or like what Academeg did with a Volga.

    You really need to get an air filter. The engine will wear much faster running without one.

    Contact Paul Shin and get a list of close Model A car clubs. Those people will help you with any thing that has to do with your car. They will arrange to get together with you to do any work needed. Model A's are so easy to work on in their stock configuration. Simple tools will get the job done.

    Get rid of all the modern mods. Return to stock. Will run better with less maintenance.
