I am battling Pancreatic cancer. Your videos are very informative and entertaining. I live in rural Pennsylvania and have done a lot of backyard mechanics in my time.
Rebuilt my first 350 trans. For a Buick skylark in the mid 70s, i tore it apart and replaced some seals and thrust washers about 60 dollars worth, my best friend helped me he was 12 years old, and I was 13 with a Chilton's Manuel. That Skylark would leave a skidmark all the way down the street. Everyone kept saying it would never run again, I'd just smile as I road past them. Cheers from Jacksonville Florida 🌞
I somehow missed this video in the series. I just commented on another of your videos without viewing this video. Don't know how I missed it. You are in a very elite class or brotherhood. You mentioned you're a mechanic but mechanics don't perform transmission work. This is another trade altogether. I can rebuild engines AND I have trans experience just tearing into my own transmissions that failed on me. This is a very different channel. You don't see revival "technicians" tearing down and rebuilding transmissions.You definitely get more out of this channel than other revival channels. Much respect from Peterborough ON.

The best way to rebuild any automatic, is to have a friend whose business is rebuilding them. So much less anxiety. I think you are doing an awesome job taking on the rebuild of the TH350.

i have been a professional transmission rebuilder for 45 years. retired 2 years now. i have rebuilt approximately 87 million THM 350 in my life! LOL, i watched you tear that unit down and i was screaming! LOL, the 350 is so easy, if you know how i guess. wish i was there to help. as far as leaving the inner lip seal out of the direct clutch drum, that drum is for high gear and reverse, you do not have to drill holes, and when you leave that seal off you can leave the 2nd sealing ring off the pump stator. also, to get a good shift i put a weak spring under the third accumulator piston in the VB and cut 2 coils off the intermediate spring on the side under that tin cover, that gives it a nice 2nd, you can leave that spring out, but it will hit 2nd hard! and you only have to put in one check ball, the one in front of the modulator valve, the intermediate clutch wave plate i replace it with a solid plate for a better 2nd, also i put a small spring in front of the modulator valve. also, i put an old selector shaft seal on the pressure regulator valve stem to lengthen the PR spring, that gives it all around nice shifts, your homemade spring compressors makes me appreciate my foot press made for the job. you did a good job! i know a lot of tricks, probably forgot a lot too! LOL.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Excellent work rebuilding the TH350, much more involved than a Mopar 727. Not sure if you've installed the trans yet but they make a product to repair worn input and in your case output shafts called SKF 99868 Speedi-Sleeves. They're available on the jungle store. Thanks for sharing!
Tried a 350 auto tyranny in my '74 when the 400 burned up, had a 327 driving it, with 33 inch JTR biasis ply tires, power braking at every red light and pulling a 411 posi rear end it lasted 6 months... I was dropping her out of my truck again and putting a 400 back in it.
I am glad someone is willing to take a chance on a rebuild of a automatic trans. I have thought about doing it many times but never seems to be my trans so don't want to tempt someone elses till I do my own.
Looked like you did fine. I have rebuilt transmission's , some can be a bear. Has always Liked, shared. All my very best.
HE DID NOT SOAK THE CLUTHES .... NEVER BUILD A TRANS DRY ....
@@tammylott921 Well has I didn't see if he did or didn't, I can't say . Thought the clutches did look wet. I try to be nice with everyone and only pipe in if they ask. Has for me I always soak them. never had a problem. All my best.

I liked that valve body spacer and plug solution. That was pretty slick Rick.! I gotta say I admire the level of confidence Chad has in his craft.

IN the bygone days I could rebuild a 4 speed in my sleep, that was out of necessity, however this is the first automatic I ever seen rebuilt, thanks and great job, very informative, keep up the good work

This is a GREAT episode! Man if there's nothing I can't stand more than an automatic transmission.. never even bothered to do one myself, just swap them out.. just ain't worth my sanity or patience.. funny how this one has a lot less views likes and comments, but I suppose it takes either a mechanic or someone truly interested in sitting here with you in the shop (I'm both). Thanks for the great content you're living my dream.. Maybe when I finally retire I'll start the camera!

Definately not boring - I have never seen the inside of an transmission before and I was fascinated by the complexity of it - I am sure that it would have never worked again if I had stripped it! I once worked on a VW beetle gearbox and had bearings and springs flying all over the shop - never again! Thank you for an amusing and informative post.

I just recently found your channel, Thanks for all the great content. You picked a pretty forgiving unit to learn on. TH350’s are fun little units to build. Wish I were in your neck of the woods, would enjoy lending a hand. I noticed you have an arbor press sitting in the background, they are a great tool to use for pressing in bushings on pumps, drums, planets and etc. also good for compressing the drum springs if you make up a jig similar to the one you built for the low reverse piston return spring, minus the the threaded rod.
Definitely would hit up the local dump and pick up old appliances to use for sheet metal for the floor. That’s what I’d do. Like I did on my rotten ranger.

Hey...!! My former boss used to drill a drain hotel, braze in a but, then thread in a drain plug, so that he could put in clean transmission oil rather than dropping the pan each time. He did this the first time that he had the an off. Cheers...!!

Colour me impressed! When you get to the transmission section of any car's manual it says in big letters 'DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!!' Apparently if you're good enough that warning can be ignored. 11/10✓. Always wondered what went on in that box of tricks. Still don't know. Watched most of it with my eyes closed. Oh me of little faith. 👍

One of the things i do when tearing into something with lots of nuts and bolts is i gather up some if the old butter plastic bowels my wife would put leftovers on and place all the nuts and bolts in to keep then together till clean up and rebuild . Its better than looking all over for them and having to go buy some , good luck !!
that's good to know about the bushings. does make sense to hit them at the joint to remove easier.
I watch Precision transmission channel too, Richard is very knowledgeable but mainly just shows teardown.

Don't know if I can agree with that, although my truck had a little more floorboards than his did hahaha lol...but counting what I had in money for the car I traded for the truck and not counting anything else,then what I put in the truck in the factory transmission and transfer case and the rebuilt 75 Chevy truck 350 0.030 motor and the ruined k20 rear ends so then it ended up with a gm corporate 10 bolt front from a 83 GMC high sierra k15 400 SBC 4spd truck 3.08 gears considered a heavy duty 6 lug front differential axles, and I had traded around the factory rear semi floating 14 bolt gm corporate rear, and got the matching 83 GMC high sierra k15 with the 3.08 gears the front was rebuilt and I bolted everything right up to the factory springs and shocks and that includes the 9 leaf spring pack and the 2 inch thick helper springs and I worked that truck just as hard with the half ton 6 lug axles as I did when I destroyed the front axle I was out playing in a chiseled field and the bolt for the cross pin backed out and got sheared off and the cross pin was allowed to come out about halfway got wedged up under the carrier and shoved down through the center section housing and immediately stopped the truck and that's how it ended up with 83 GMC high sierra k15 6 lug half ton axles I used the factory lockout hubs on the front but oh well it's factory axles were 4.10 gears I had around $2,740 in putting the truck back together except for the transmission and radiator and tires I had a set of American racing wheels atlas chrome polished 16x8 chrome plated aluminum wheels with first tires were the baldy's that came on the axles peerless Baja widetrack AT 285/75/R16, and after 10 1/2 years I put a half tread set of KL71 kumho road venture MT 285/75/16
Anyways I had around $3,450 in the truck when I was done..
Hope it works. I rebuilt one and it was a flop. But will try it again. You can’t learn unless you try. Thanks for the video
If you think about it. It's a tedious task. But it is super cheap to rebuild and it's worth it. Great job pops
Make sure the ball bearings that are in the valve body go back where they came from or you will have issues

Thanks for an interesting and entertaining video. I'd never do that for the simple reason that I'd not be able to reassemble it unless I'd have a video of what I did. I feel fine trusting the local transmission shop. IMHO it's money well spent.

I don't have a lot of experience on car an truck transmissions.. did some Alison transmissions in the woods where its work or don't. Supposed to be this hospital clean environment... that went out the window. I thought they were just for the guys that do this stuff but truly, a automatic transmission is kinda forgiving as stuff ain't perfect but it works. I used pieces an parts from a handful of others and just cherry picked the best pieces, lots of o rings were hand made. Kinda a lick an pray thing. I have a feeling this is going to be just fine for what its for... that said, it could be that its not great but someone can get it from you, its got all new parts so they can just take it apart an fix whats not doing its job. Gotta say that you had me laughing an yet just watching to hear the "blue version" come out/lol

I seen a brake booster and master cylinder set up that would probably be great for you in your old 1950s pick up truck.
CROWN AUTOMOTIVE sells it for 1970s Jeep CJ 5 models .
It is a very nice looking very compact size brake booster and it comes with, or looks like it fits a
JB-6 size GM master cylinder, like the one you have on your truck.
I hope this helps you out with your brake upgrade project on that old truck. I can see that you are very fond of that one because it belonged to your Dad and GrandDad.

You did a lot better than I would have done, Chad. I would have lost the check balls and springs immediately. Springs and other crucial small parts like to fly off into an alternate missing parts dimension frequently in my project. I enjoy your channel. Are you a machinist by trade?

How does somebody ever invent something like that auto gear box , its voodoo and witchcraft . You got to give kudos to anyone getting in there and making it better than it was , or even fixing it . What ever the excitement levels , well worth the watch , makes it a little less voodoo .

Also I say you be surprised when get Lock Jaws truck and works out super also you do excellent work always too! Surprised me that 20 in heavy duty 3/4 ton , 30 in heavy duty 1 ton GM trucks of GMC or Chevrolet used Turbo 350 not Turbo 400 3 speed Automatic transmission like 25 for 3/4 ton , 35 1 tons someone must want be up for test trail back then ! I know my late dad also his brother my uncle 1990 Chevrolet 2500 3/4 ton when bought in 1994 surprised me had 305 V8 TBI like 2 barrel also heavy duty motor , Turbo 400 3 speed Automatic transmission with 411 rear end gears like 20 series and thought have 350 V8 TBI type but did , had 6 leafs springs on each back wheels on left and right but heavy duty shocks on it plus 6 studs wheels of 225/75/16 inches Load Range D! 1978 they had GMC 25 3/4 ton had 350 V8 4 barrel carb, Turbo 400 3 speed Automatic transmission with 411 also 10 leaf springs for one ton suspension and 8 studs of 950 /16.5 LT Load Range D! Weird I know!

Should have gone ahead and done the transmission up right, that way you got a good TH350 on the shelf for the future after you get that truck out of the woods. Seems like an awful lot of work to not do it up right, and probably wouldn't have cost that much more.

I was kinda taught that the clutches get soaked for 20 -30 minutes before the clutches and seals went in. Is that wrong?
Builders preference. I dipped them just before install.

Never got into an automatic tranny. I was wondering as I thought I saw you with a lathe if you could have cut an undersized i.d. bushing for that worn shaft that was slopping around? I know you don't intend to use it but was wondering for those who are haywiring their own? Also I talked with your mother and she said to tell you to quit playing around and reassemble your Lego shop, pronto!! Lol! Enjoying.
