Hi @Au5, thanks a lot for this tutorial. As it needs to be paused and backwarded/forwarded, I create a timestamps I post here. Feel free to include/tweak it into the video description if you think it's a good idea:
    00:00 Intro
    00:28 Real cymbal wavefrom analysis
01:44 Set basic OSC wave form / remove note tracking
02:21 Set FM parameters - turn OSC2 down
    03:07 Tweak unisson parameters
03:38 Set global settings to max unisson ranges
    04:28 Manage filters and LFO
06:19 Change OSC2 wave form (PWM)
07:12 Add movment to the sound (LFO FM, Chaos detune)
08:29 Add some character (Eq, Reverb, phaser, combs filter)
    11:48 Manage cymbals attack (bloom)
    13:13 Chorus trick
14:43 New start - Create a ride cymbal
15:33 Global trick - change unisson mode (from linear to somehting else)
16:15 Set modulation for ride cymbal (Env, LFO)
19:08 Use the velocity to change how hard the hit sounds
21:44 Add some reverb at the end of the FX chain
    22:06 New start - Create Hi-Hat
23:18 Use chaos on OSC1 detune
23:57 Change LFO to Env to manage endless time
24:27 Set an arpegiator / step sequencer to test Hi-Hat
24:57 Add second arpegiator / step sequencer to modulate velocity + add velocity as modulation source
25:21 Add some filters and FX
    28:38 Final examples
    29:03 Outro

You really think he can't fig out how to do that ?

  • @Vospi
    @Vospi 4 роки тому +60

OK, so you said you would appreciate comments on the method. :)
Here are the tweaks I've employed (and also showcased them in a video below):
    - I tried bumping OSC oversample up as we're dealing with FM. It's a tad clearer, I feel.
    - I've modified the source waves to be more complex and higher, thus...
    - thus my results are much more resemblant of a white noise. In fact, you can almost substitute one for another...
    - which would defeat the purpose, but I tried moving my FM amount with an envelope, getting from a "noisier" mode to a more "ridish" mode while the sound changes and evolves. It's a cool trick. It sounds rather natural and gives you a sense of control over the color without touching an EQ or something like a sample pitch.
    - I also use a different Amp envelope with a sharper attack and fast rolloff. I feel that "real rides" have very, very sharp amplitude bump compared to their long tail.
    The video: ua-cam.com/video/o2K7eHFCt0U/v-deo.html
Thank you for the inspiration to mess around, because I usually have very different ideas and yours are always looking in your very specific direction. Awesome stuff, and also - huge thanks for NOT creating filler videos just for the sake of them. I hate when it happens and they do it all the time everywhere. Not so much here. You can tell you're really into the invention and that's why you're here to tell about it. Which is great. Feels great. Thanks, greetings from Russia.

You can also make a really high Q on that distortion filter (with the envelope controlling the value) and it will add a sine-y ride vibe to it. Makes it sound like a small ride plate instead.

I'm really glad to see this video! The energy transferring from the lower harmonics to the higher is something I've been thinking a lot about lately. I used to have access to a 36" gong, with a beautifully slow bloom, and have thought about possible ways to emulate that.
I think that the same effect happens in a hard tom hit, but actually from the top harmonics downward, as the shockwave from the hit bounces off the rim and gradually gets transferred into the lower harmonics. My goal is to somehow synthesize a decent timpano.
Regarding the phys modeling exciter source: if you shake a loose (maybe has to be old and stretched?) timpano head which isn't mounted, that lightning-like plastic flappy noise is what I really think should be the energy going into a phys modeling system - very different from white noise.

3:55 damn, I already recognise cymbal qualities in this sound. I never used frequency splitted oscilloscopes (or whatever that is called) but in this time frame, you have also convinced me how useful it is. Especially to analyse "model"sounds, you use. I think FL's Edison is capable of that kinda visualization too. Four minutes in and you already game me enough to dive into synthesis (via Vital in my case but that translates very easily from Serum ^^). But I am curious in what more you have to say. Back to the video. 🤣
