I really think you should check out The Edge of Seventeen as a movie about teen girls going through the death of her father and her strained relationship with mainly her mom and older brother. I don’t see a lot of people covering it and I want to hear your more empathetic view of the movies main character that is unfairly depicted most times. Amazing video btw 🙌✨

An important point that Novum left out: the suffocation scene was shot in real time of how long it takes to actually kill someone from suffocating or strangulation. That was a deliberate choice by Fennell. The movie makes us watch all two and a half minutes of this decision; plenty of time, like Novum said, to come to his senses, realize it was wrong and stop. And I think this was another very powerful reference to a common form of violence exerted on women by men who get away with it. Think of all the cases you hear of a man strangling a woman to death “during rough sex” and it gets treated as a “whoopsie, I didn’t realize!” It took that long for Cassie to die. It took that long for each of those women to die. It took that long for the man to supposedly “not realize” she couldn’t breathe. And because just SAYING two minutes doesn’t seem like much, and because society is what this movie showed us it is, it’s a genuine defense in court that works constantly. But now, we’ve seen those two and a half minutes. We know how long it actually is while we’re experiencing it. We know that it’s plenty of time to realize, come to your senses, and stop. And yet…
Hopefully, we will remember that scene the next time.

You are confusing air suffication with a blood choke.
Blood chokes are when you put pressure on the blood vessels on the neck, starving the brain for oxygen. That leads to unconscuousness very fast, 15-20seconds and a whole lot less panic than air strangulation, wich takes minutes and causes a lot of panic. Watch a MMA-choke out and you’ll see what I mean. The lights goes out very fast.
I’m not an advocate of these sexual practices at all, quite the contrary, but I can easily see how fatal accidents can occur without malicious intent.

    • @maloryj7165
      @maloryj7165 Рік тому +27

@@cantycanvas4150wtf lol. No one is confused. They're referencing an act that took place on screen that men in real life attempt (often successfully) to excuse as an accident. That it takes so long is what makes the defense particularly bazaar. Why are you trying to "well *actually* " violence against women in a discussion about this movie? Did you not understand the film well? How embarrassing for you to have left that comment.

    • @cantycanvas4150
      @cantycanvas4150 Рік тому +2

@@maloryj7165 You’re a little slow, I presume, so I’ll try to explain it again as one would do to a small child:
There are two kinds of ”chokes” - blood choke and air choke. If you put pressure on the neck that pressure can either
      1. Cut of air supply to the lungs. This takes a long time if it is to be lethal or render someone unconscious - as depicted in the movie. Takes minutes.
      2. Stop blood flow in the veins and arteries to/from the brain. This will make someone unconscious in much less than a half a minute.
You seem to be be totally unaware of these to very different mechanisms that can occur when pressure is put on the neck and therefore you assume that putting a stranglehold on someone always is a long and dramatic struggle. It is not. Sometimes it is VERY quick (blood choke) and rather undramatic. Hence I can easily understand that accidents can occur if people are doing those kind of things when having sex.
I therefore am very much against those kind of practices since it is dangerous.
But a deadly outcome is not necessarily a result of intented murder, it might be and it might not. See the difference?
There is a difference between involuntary manslaughter and murder, and that is recognized in courtrooms all over the world.
      Edit add:
Furthermore it was you who thought it was a good idea to take what you learned from a movie and apply it in real world judicial proceedings. That was the whole idea behind your initial comment.
-I saw in a movie that it takes two and a half minute to strangle someone so therefore accidental deaths can never occur and it is always 1st degree murder.
That was the gist of your argument. Then you have the nerve to imply that I didn’t understand the movie and that the discussion was all about the movie and that, reading between the lines, I support violence towards women.
You are either very dumb or very dishonest.

    • @maloryj7165
      @maloryj7165 Рік тому +19

@@cantycanvas4150 I don't know why you felt the need to repeat your self. Everyone else is talking about intentional murder by suffocation and you felt the need to correct someone by...changing the subject? That's the dumb part lol. Original comments like "men get away with straight up intentional murder" and you said "well actually, MMA, accidents, sex games." It's very silly. Feel free to continue writing more multi paragraph explanations of why you're right about the thing only you're talking about tho. It's cute.

    • @cantycanvas4150
      @cantycanvas4150 Рік тому +3

      @@maloryj7165
The repetition was obviously needed due to your lack of comprehension.
It was you that implied that men habitually get out of murder charges in court, claiming accidental cause. You argued that those kind of accidents can not occur and that it’s all premeditated murder. The basis for your argument was that it takes a long time to strangle someone - a medical expert opinion that you appearantly picked up from this movie.
I commented that the act of strangulation can have two different mechanisms - cutting of air flow to the lungs or cutting of blood flow to the brain - and that the latter will render someone unconscious VERY quickly. It depends on where on the throat pressure is applied. It’s easy to get wrong. Thus; sexual strangulation games can easily go wrong and it can happen very quickly (therefore shouldn’t be done).
Thus: it is not necessarily murder. It may very well be in some cases, but in others it may be, what you implied is impossible, merely a tragic accident.

29:35 Promising Young Woman takes tropes from various RomComs and subverts them. When Bo Burnham takes Cassie back to his place without telling her where they are going, this is taken from a scene in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” where Ian, after months of dating Tula and her never inviting him inside (she’s a virgin who lives with her parents), instead of dropping her off at her own home, drives her back to his place without discussing it with her first. It’s played as romantic in the movie, but in real life that would actually be terrifying.
There are a lot of romantic gestures that women are taught from RomComs which are actually quite dangerous in real life (, like a guy stalking your bedroom window with a boombox) and this movie subverts A LOT of those tropes.

I enjoy the shot of Cassie in the dean's office where there's this odd, large empty space next to Cassie the whole time she's shown. I like to think that empty space is maybe symbolic that Nina's case is not rare and that Cassie is not the only one who has (or is) meeting with the dean to attempt to address campus rape. Or, the space is reserved for Nina (and all the Ninas of the world) to watch as the dean is held accountable in the sharp-tongued, psychological-warfare manner that finally gets the point across.
It also makes me think about how Cassie's personality is likely to have very strong influence from Nina. Cassie describes Nina as being "shrewd", and Cassie uses that same cold, biting attitude towards the dean. So in a way, Nina is right there in that empty space.

I love these videos! I have a real hunger for thoughtful, detailed "reviews" of good films. By "reviews", I mean that we've seen the film and we want to review it, discuss it, analyze what was powerful and how it worked. Most actual movie reviews are (despite the name) written for people who haven't yet seen the film, so they try to avoid spoilers. It's hard to find detailed, thought-provoking movie discussions that treat us like adults and are willing to talk about all parts of a film. And videos are a great medium for this, because we can see visually what worked and what symbols were used, etc. Thanks for creating these!

It really captured the anger I felt and the ridiculous attempts to protect the older male teen that did it, because surely his future was more important and the act is supposed to be accepted as something that “happens”. Personally, I don't think Cassie hired a hitman to kill the lawyer. When I saw him appear on screen, my first thought was that she'd hired a big guy to scare/intimidate the lawyer, the same way the lawyer had scared Nina into dropping the case. As you said, Cassie's actions were purely psychological. I don't think at any point she wanted to physically hurt anyone.

    • @feluriastark2611

I dont think that Cassie wanted the Lawyer to be killed either. The Film shows us the whole time that Cassie does not use physical violence to make a person accountable for their actions. And she is willing to give them a chance in the first place by trying to find out how they think about it now or if they handle things different and when she sees that someone has changed like the Lawyer she can let it go. I also dont believe that Cassie wants to kill Al Monroe in fact i dont think she really wanted to harm him physically in any way, she just wanted to push ihm over the edge because she knew he would kill her and thats what she wanted to finally hold him accountable. i think she did not cuffed him right so he could free him on one side and she knew Al and his best Buddy would do EVERYTHING to hide what they have done just like they did it in Ninas case and it would have a different impact in court. =)

I wasn't totally suspicious of Bo Burnham character at first (probably because I like and relate to him in real life) but I was so worried that he was going to turn out to be a pdf-phile because he makes a lot of mention of kids and being a pediatrician doesn't mean anything and they are really important but that is exactly the kind of job a person with that predilection might shoot for, power and alone time and actual medical permission to examine, touch, etc children, and he says things like he's "worried people will think you're my daughter" and "I'm afraid to kiss you for fear of people thinking you're a child" "because you're short" I feel like maybe that could be a funny joke if worded properly but it was creepy to me, and of course all the parts of r*pe culture that result in the sexualization of youth and young women in general, and it can go the other way around too, there are plenty of female teachers that abuse male students and it's still viewed largely as a good thing for the student when it's not, abuse is abuse nomatter what.

i want to preface this by saying if someone has already made this point then i promise i’m not copying you, i just haven’t seen this analysis before! :) so something i couldn’t help but notice (which may be a stretch but a great thing about art is seeing what it means to you) was that there were five parts of cassie’s plan and that there are also five stages of grief? there’s some ways in which each stage correlates with the theme of her plan?
1 being denial and allison brie’s character denying her role as a woman turning a blind eye to SA in nina’s assault.
2 being anger and cassie’s frustration and anger towards the legal and social systems in place that allow cases like nina’s to be swept under the rug by academic institutions.
3 being bargaining. the definition of bargaining in terms of grief is “a stage in which you may try to negotiate with yourself or with a higher power to try to undo the loss” and you can see (even in a visual sense) that the lawyer is bargaining with cassie “as the higher power” as this seen as him begging and kneeling at her feet and her forgiving him for his sins in a Christ-like manner.
4 being depression of cassie being defeated and murdered in such a depressing way, especially because women all around the world unfortunately understood and could probably predict how the interaction from the get-go was going to end up, due to how women (and cassie) are forced to be aware of the realistic and real life situations/implications shown in this film. the whole fourth chapter has such a depressing and unsettling tone to it because we know these things to be far too common and not just a “dramatized scene for a fiction film”.
with finally 5 being acceptance where we the audience are forced to accept cassie’s fate, where the antagonists of the film all are forced to accept their fate, and the commentary the film has made as a whole accepting that as intelligent and promising as cassie’s plan was, the film has accepted that sadly, these are how these type of situations play out due to the world we live in. okay that was long, but i kept noticing this trend during this brilliant video essay and felt like sharing :)

I’m so surprised that you didn’t mention that Cassie uses the same manipulative, predatory behaviors to implement steps in her final plan.
Like during the meeting scene with Madison, Cassie plays the “man’s part”. She participates in the same manipulative behavior to get Madison to talk. She continually pours alcohol for her to drink while staying sober, the language she uses, and she even is dressed in traditionally masculine clothes vs Madison’s dress when you see them from torso down during both greetings.
She also lures the teen into her car so easily by looking friendly, talking like a teen, pretending to be familiar, and thus “kidnapping” the daughter (you did mention this).
And obvious the entire stripper nurse part of the plan she inverts roles like you mentioned.
I think this shows how, like you mentioned earlier, this isn’t necessarily a gendered problem (it’s not inherently men that’s the problem, it’s grape culture that men benefit from), but that these actions, though they seem to hold individual men accountable, it still doesn’t change the system or culture.
And then when she is murdered during the climax, it really turns this film into a horror film. Our vigilante hero is still the victim to the predators she seeks revenge on.

It's easier to live if you believe in "just world thinking", it wouldn't happen to you of course because you're not like all those other women who get themselves raped. Women are part of the problem, but without men committing rape, there would be no problem.

Cassie took on Nina’s whole essence, to the point of it almost totally erasing herself. The scene of her speaking with Nina’s mother is so telling, because it shows Nina as the one who was so curt and brash. Cassie wasn’t. It’s why that pastel pink, hyper girly aesthetic that Cassie wears and has around her (that even confuses Madison) is so odd to us at first.
You don’t realize she is getting the revenge AS Nina. Cassie is taking on the nature that Al erased from her best friend with his assault.
The moments we see the real Cassie are so telling. When she forgives Jordan, when she is sorry to Madison for not letting her know nothing happened in the hotel-when she’s talking about Nina to Al.
This movie is so powerful. I’m glad when it makes people uncomfortable because you are SUPPOSED to feel that way. This isn’t a topic that you are supposed to be numb to. No one should talk about the topic of SA / r*pe casually. The Dean acts as if it’s just another day when a complaint comes in.
And this movie shows you exactly how ugly it is, and how it ruins more than just one person. Cassie’s dad saying he missed her… he hadn’t seen his own daughter in seven years. God, and her parents then lose her completely to murder after seeing a glimmer of hope in her looking happy with Ryan.
Thank you so much for doing this video essay. The amount of females talking about it is amazing but I am so happy to hear a man talk about this. You are opening up a whole dialogue to young men to take these topics in and learn.
Definitely a movie I am always a fan of but it is not an easy watch when you remember how it ends for our main character. So glad they changed the ending to give us a more satisfying experience.

    Another important part about Ryan:
Cassie didn't know if the police when interview him, so while that is Ryan's last opportunity for redemption from Ryan's perspective, Cassie wasn't aware he would have that moment and left everything up to the lawyer.
HOWEVER, the texts at the end show that Cassie knew that even after being shown the video footage of the assault, Ryan was still going to attend the wedding of the assailant. In her mind, she already knew his behavior wouldn't change - he would continue to enable.

First off, love the way you approached this and the in-depth analysis. I found the casting choice for Cassie's parents to be very interesting since her mother is most well known as "Stiffler's Mom" from American Pie (an older woman who has sex with an 18yr old male and it's portrayed as positive as most older female/younger male assault is portrayed) and The Kurgan from Highlander. Clancy Brown may be in parental/guardian roles these days, but The Kurgan was the epitome of a masculine-rapist monstrosity who destroys things specifically because they are held sacred or important by others. It may be just me and the age at which I watched Highlander, but seeing him in any role is still inherently uncomfortable. The two of them are rather perfect as symbolic of the older generation who at the very least expect and tacitly condone predation. Again, loved the way you handled this analysis and the level of detail.

Im late to this video but i think this comment is so insightful! Connie britton as the dean is great casting too, she is probably most famous for the understanding guidance counselor/nurturing mother character she played on Friday Night Lights, so the refusal of the dean to be an ally to her female students is especially ironic. I picked up the subversion of type casting in romcom leads like adam brody and quirky best friend max greenfield, but i didnt appreciate the references for cassie's parents as well.

@GhostOfCarlJung I would get it if Cassie intended to kill him, but I think she knew that he would try to kill her, and prepared herself to kill him if necessary. In the end she didn’t win, but I think she wanted him to live with the shame of what he did just like Nina had to live with the “shame” others put on her for what he did. Just like she made everyone else remember how they aided in his getting away with it.

It is not made explicit that Cassie intends to kill Al, but I think it is hinted. I think the other people she plans revenge towards either were women complicit in Nina’s attack, or they were men who intended to assault her, but were stopped beforehand. The man outside the lawyer’s home may have been a hitman, or he could’ve just been meant to intimidate Jordan. But Emerald Fennell has explicitly stated the reason she chose the ending was because Cassie chose violence, and she didn’t think that choice could produce any other outcome. I personally really liked the ending because even though we understand why Cassie is seeking revenge, she’s ultimately perpetuating harm instead of dealing with her trauma in a healthy way. After the realization about Ryan, I definitely believed she was capable of killing Al, even if that wasn’t her original goal.

I actually think the guy playing Al is cast because he has played good guys in the past, someone pointed out that most of the men in the film have played good guys in the past. Joe and Al are both played by actors who played good guys on Veronica Mars where the longest arc is Veronica trying to find out who raped her before the events of the season. I think casting these men that were the good guys, not "nice guys" is to say something about the danger of men even if you don't think of them as bad guys. Adam Brody also played good guys on TV around the same time. It's basically the men millennial women grew up watching in roles where they were kind considerate and non threatening.

My partner and I watched "Promising Young Woman" and "Saltburn" last night and loved both of them. I've been skipping over this video in your output for ages as I hadn't seen the film yet and did not want to watch a comprehensive breakdown until I actually had a chance to see it. Personally, I had a very slight preference to the almost nihilistic cruelty of "Saltburn"-- a movie I can absolutely understand people having divisive opinions about-- but that preference is on par with liking a really great pizza slightly more than another really great pizza. "Promising Young Woman" is a lot more "on the nose" with it's divisiveness as it's pretty obvious the only reason to get bent out of shape about it is inherently related to insecure masculinity.
As usual, a fantastic breakdown and another hook keeping me checking the page on the daily for the Midsommar/Wicker Man breakdown... no rush though... I can always re-watch the Hereditary video (a rare case of youtube content being about as excellent as the source material) for the 5th time. An activity that registers as "concerning" by friends.

I loved your video and your insights on this amazing movie! Your comments are deep, thoughtful and clear. I watched this movie when it came out and many reviews afterwards which I found (most of them) superficial and simplistic. During the movie I laughed so much remembering a lot of those "friends/classmates/colleagues/teammates/bosses" making similar moves in countless occasions; lots of "nice guys" all of them genuinely believing they're not doing anything wrong because their friends, teachers, parents, supervisors and even the police, enable their behavior and prioritize their future, reputation and life over those of the women they abuse. Al mentioned "It's a guy's worst nightmare" and Cassie asking if he knows what's a girl's worst nightmare, they have no idea and that's why this movie and analysis like yours are so valuable. I'm happy I found your channel (even if late), I'll stay around to watch more of your videos.

FANTASTIC VIDEO ❤ subbed and shared it with my fellow gf’s who also adore this movie like I do. The whole forgiveness if true accountability and regret is shown is something that doesn’t usually happen in movies (for action scenes to happen I’m sure) or if they do forgive, they usually pay for it later. The closing scene of them all publicly called out during the wedding is exactly what they did to themselves by always denying their own actions. It’s a perfect example of modern tragedy yet the true tragedy is how often this happens in our world. Most of my friends and I have been SA in one way or another…some small and easily acceptable in society and others of downright R with even partner’s being the source of it. I did have to watch something overly cheerful and cheesy after watching this movie since it was bringing back way too many college memories.

Not a fan of jock bros and don’t usually go where they are but super tall Chad was at the place i go dancing with my friends and tonight i had to hand out flyers for our next Wednesdays goth dance party.
Btw I’m gen x but i dress and act young so even though I’m 52 people think I’m 35 and i think Chad thought i was his age but I’m probs 20 years older.
Chad kept trying to touch me. “Dance but don’t touch”. I said . He held my hand and kissed it to show he was a gentleman. I was like “eyeroll” he’s still touching me and i said no but your trying to be a gentleman even though . Still no.
He then let go of my hand, ran it through his hair like a 5 th grader protraying 50’s cartoon Greaser and held it up really high , challenging me to do a high 5.
Clever Chad tactic to challenge girls to touch him instead and usually fail because they usually can’t reach.
Also, way to turn the tables Chad.
I’m 6ft tall in shoes so i hit the bottom of his hand.
“You didn’t make it” He said.
“Yes i did Bitch.” I said. “That didn’t count” he said.
And this allegory reminds me of my life in the Patriarchy. I accomplished enough in my male dominated career to be listed in multiple Wikipedia and celebrity google searches but because my accomplishments go ignored by the brodeo I’m still struggling while they got all the breaks.
All i want to do is dance. And of course Jock Douche has to turn it into drama. They always get so emotional like little brat babies.
Anyways Chad didn’t like me having normal human boundaries so he did this aggressive dance bullshit and kept trying to touch me.
It was super hot out and i was getting a hot flash and also don’t like jock bros anyways so i kept being like , “please don’t touch me!”
Why cant you just act normal and dance like 2 feet away without touching people you don’t know?
Then like those douche jock bros always do, when you say no they get all aggressive.
He starting flipping me on off and causing drama “Fuck you then! I hate you!”
White jock douche bros always flip like a switch and become instantly angry and aggressive when they don’t get everything their way , because they live a life in a white man Patriarchy, built to benefit them nothing in life punishes them with consequences for acting like a little bitch baby.
The world I’m trying to build with my life’s work is an entire different reality for all the magic beings suffering constantly in the Patriarchy trying to survive within a system that doesn’t benefit us.
While working double time to have a PHD in DIY and create our own reality, because the corporate funding of the Patriarchy is resistant to fund a message that goes against them.
Well… unless that intellectual property is worth millions. Then, like the whores they are, Corporate Capitalism will approve it and fund it. But only for the money.
The Goddess protects and guides me.
I live to serve her and embody her and she will prevail because under the streets and the laws built by man is the law of Mother Nature and that’s the true reality.

If you're not a survivor, I understand there's an element missing in order to fully comprehend what occurs when someone violates you. Sticks and stones, blah blah blah, but emotional trauma scars forever. When another literally violently steals a piece of your soul, it's the rage over that loss that the victim now has to contend with. The brain can't handle such a terror. And bloody, violent, unhinged revenge is something that you want. How does any one person deal with that? Rage has no affiliates. No gender or race or anything else. But society forever has told the women that "women aren't violent." And all of time proves that to be untrue. So now what? 🖤

Hotel restaurant visuals are super impactful. Madison wearing figure-hugging white dress with beige purse = her recently adopted (pretense of) virginal “good girl” (who just bore twins and got back to girlish figure tout de suite! and ditched her medical profession to become the accepted unchallenging vessel of all-accepting - of male dominance- femininity (similar to Al Monroe’s suddenly adopted pre-marital “moral compass” attributed to his bride, a vapid bikini model😂) is contrasted with Cassie (aiming to end a seriously tragic social injustice) wearing black PANTS and white gender-neutral/non-slim-fitting shirt and professional hairstyle=reality of non -denied love and utter heartbreak for our loved ones who have been senselessly destroyed. PS: Here’s a challenge: Nina is the Christ figure -hope you have fun figuring it out🤍

Something that still infuriates me is how a bunch of online neckbeard/PUA/Andrew Tate fans complained that Carey Mulligan wasn't 'hot' enough to pull off this role, and it should've been Margot Robbie. Like ... (a) what are you talking about, she's objectively very pretty, as IF any of these incels would say no to Carey; (b) it's not only the Margot Robbies of the world who get SA'd; (c) these are probably the same trolls who have recently been commenting about how 'mid' Margot is. Just ew.

The cuasi square that frame Cassie in the movie is associated to a Saint in life or a persone who is going to be saint. This is in the bizantine Catholic culture... So when I saw that square I remenbered I thought... Hooo crap... She is dead... She is not going to survive the movie...😢

I thought, because it is a Queene Anne style decoration, that it was "framing" Cassie as the classic, murdered, Femme Fatale: Queen Anne of Boleyn and that's why it was foreshadowing Cassie's death. Interesting we got the same reading from a completely different interpretation! lol

Great video. All of the decor of Cassie’s parents’ home is uber-old-school feminine bordello-like (all sofa’s have a two-breast silhouette, other pieces are sexual and/or predatory or orgasmic) and the outdoor (intentionally) decor of Nina’s mom’s home is fairy-tale cottage-like (denying of anything serious/painful similar to Nina’s mom’s denial of needing to address grievable sexual violence against “promising” women).

I love how the reviewer says at the end “this movie is beautiful, it’s ugly,…”. The review is spot on. The movie made me so uneasy with every potential rape scene but just when the scene is about to push past unease into complete disgust Cassie takes control. Movies like this always make me reanalyze how I speak to my teen daughters. I LOATHE the phrase “boys will be boys”. It’s such a fine line between making sure my daughters understand that this predatory behavior exists without trying to put all the responsibility on them. A woman should not have to ever question her safety yet not allowing herself to be in a position to question her safety is also important. On the other side of the coin I’m also teaching my son to be accountable for his actions and to respect everyone until they prove they are unworthy of respect (like the men in this movie). This is a powerful movie and still relevant today.

only two minutes in but i see the hopeful intention behind the movie flew completely over your head with the statement "this movie is about a woman obsessed with toxic male behavior" actually it's about a woman whose life has been destroyed by the suicide of her best friend who was raped in college. i think you should understand the material before making a video commentating on it ...

For the painting reference at 55:00, I believe it's a reference to the "immaculate Heart" Virgin Mary paintings specifically the one with a blue background with a halo behind her head.
Try as I might I can't find out who painted it, but it's the second picture on the Immaculate Heart of Mary Wikipedia.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immaculate_Heart_of_Mary
    That's my best guess.

I think it’s interesting how Cassie frequently is in Christ-like positions but also is depicted with Mary iconography, both the sacrifice and the care-giver, a ‘lamb’ and a Madonna… just a thought lol

It's also referencing Queen Anne of Boleyn: a classic Femme Fatale that meets an unfortunate end. The decoration is reminiscent of Queene Anne style furniture flair

I know this is a couple years or so later so unsure you'll see this but when you ask at 55:03 what that may be representing, my first thought was Mother Mary, as she usually is adorned in many paintings with that babyish blue, and sometimes pink roses, but it made me look up for more specific photo I just googled saint blue pink and lo and behold I found a mosaic of Saint Agatha of Sicily, who has blue halo & pink happens to be a patron saint of rape victims! I wish I could post here but going to see if I can message you it. Thank you for pointing out these things I love finding all of the extra symbolism especially as it affects our subconscious I believe and love learning

I'm sorry, but do u remember any sources you used while producing this? I might want to do some research myself on this topic and would love to get some first hand insight. Mostly because I will write my seminar paper on this movie, which will have to be approximately 10 pages long. Sources will then be a necessity, which is why I'm asking. Thank you for this video though, it gave me a lot to think about

    • @Novum_YT
      @Novum_YT  Рік тому +8

Hi Nina, thanks for watching and thanks for including me in your studies. If I did use sources in this video they will be mentioned/clearly visible on screen. But I think in this instance this is almost entirely my reading of the movie, there really isn't too much out there in terms of secondary sources.
That being said most universities are perfectly accepting of Youtbe sources and everything I say here is backed up by evidence drawn straight from the film. So you could either reference the video or just use the same evidence/logic I've used to construct your own argument! I frequently sourced UA-cam videos (and many other far more sus websites) during my BA and my Masters degree. What's important is the quality of the source, not where you're sourcing it from (except in instances like wikipedia where the public can freely edit). Your faculty should have a list of acceptable sources and how best to reference them.
In terms of your essay if you're worried about having a large wordcount to fill my advice on that is twofold:
      1. Consider a comparitive essay. This would pair really well with something like 'She Said' also staring Carey Mulligan. Much easier to write more, you can talk about key similarities and differences etc.
      2. Pick a topic that seems targeted but is quite broad. For example if we say 'Promising Young Woman as an example of revenge movies' then you can essentially talk about the entirety of the movie (and a whole genre of film) while seemingly directing it all to the same point. Another good one would be looking at it as a protest movie that's metaphorical for a groundswell of female anger in the post me-too era.
Hope that helps, sorry I don't have a source list I can just send you, I do on a lot of my other videos but it just wasn't an option here! Good luck with the essay!

Any thoughts re Cassie’s name…? A link to Cassandra of mythology, or I also took it to be a riff on ‘castrate’ Sheesh!
Her outfits and the color-scheme at times (the blue/pink) calls out (not only stereotypic male/female coloring by society) possibly Alice in Wonderland or Dorothy from Wizard of Oz - these great fanciful tales that may appear benign, magical and fun, but ultimately have much danger as well, with a friend here or there on the journey but not many and it’s a difficult ‘road.’ Also the candy-coloring portrays a ‘consumable item’ - something we can chew on, eat, we want to consume it.
I enjoyed your piece on ‘Alien’ - fantastic!
