It's easier because it's applied. I think the vast majority of people with self described "math problems" either don't like math or are "bad at math" because it was nonsensical drivel in school. Once you have real world applications for that math it not only becomes easier but actually enjoyable.

As a student pilot who struggled in math I gotta say that the more you do it the better you get at it... One thing is being lazy and uninterested, the other, is feeling inspired and dedicated to what you want...

As a pilot in the US, if you can add, subtract, multiply and divide, you can be a pilot. the majority of aviation math is remembering formulas and plugging numbers into said formulas. With the upcoming of new avionics and flight computers, most of all calculations are already computed for you, however, on your FAA written exams, you'll need to calculate problems with only a basic calculator or your electronic flight computer. Speed Distance Time and Fuel Consumption are probably your most used, the more advanced you get in flying the more math you learn, especially in IFR flying, but its just knowing the formulas to you basically.

    This was very helpful.
I never got to good off grades in math in my school years, and that bothered me alot with always wanting to be a pilot. Math intimidates me, gives me anxiety literally. And I feel that holds me back from being a pilot. I know I can learn math equations etc for what I have to do. Calculators always help but what about knowing this stuff old school..I'm afraid of math lol. It's a major confidence killer for me in life and my lifelong dream of being a pilot.

Youre not necessarily doing complex math. Lots of adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing, but with calculators this isnt hard. Another aspect is knowing "rules of thumb" like: for each thousand feet you need to descend, multiply times 5 to know how many miles ahead you need to start your descent at 500 ft per minute. So if youre on a 70 mile trip at 5000 feet and need to descend to 1500 for traffic pattern altitude, you need to lose 3500 ft. 3.5 x 5 is about 17. So about 17 miles before the airport, begin a 500 foot per minute descent. Maybe add 1 or 2 miles and start the descent at 18 or 19 miles out so youre at the right altitude just before entering the pattern. Its really not that hard and 95% of it can be done during flight planning BEFORE you fly. So you just make a note of the answer on your navlog and juxt follow your navlog while flying. Its. Not. That. Hard.

Hello from a washed out colour blind real-world pilot and now an avid sim-pilot and radio-controlled builder/flyer as a result, and I've developed a graph (so far) that calculates correction angles from any heading to a runway at any other heading. It puts a mid sized plane dead on to the runway at 10nm out from any approach direction. Anyhow, the graph is a kind of lopsided convex parabola. I've been using the graph for years now with super results, but I'd like to find the equation of the graph just for ++its and giggles. Because the thing slopes up more steeply on the way up to the peak and slopes off more gently after that, I can't even get my TI-84 graphing calculator to come up with an equation. Would I have to separate the thing at the peak requiring 2 possibly logrithmic equations, one on either side of the peak? Or will a modified quadratic equation work? Fly hard... land soft. Later.

Oh, on the questionnaire they ask you whether you are a driver. If you happen to be a non-driver, they ask you further. And if you happen to answer that you could never succeed in becoming a driver, it's game over from thereon. They think on the theory that if you cannot be taught how to drive, then how the hell are they gonna succeed in teaching you how to fly.

If you really want to become a pilot there are multiple ways, you can get good grades and a f you don't you can always pay for your pilots license (you can pay as you go) although I'm in school at the age of 15 I'm an instructor as a side job on Sunday's for helping people getting there micro pilots license I take them out for about 1 hour, there is always a way!

I am very weak in maths and worst in physics. Whenever I study these subjects I feel bore and start sleeping. Can I become an pilot if I am very weak in matgs anf physics? It's my dream job. I am in 9th standard now.Sometimes I think that I shall give up. I do not deserve to be pilot. I also have only one kidney Xan I become an pilit in this medical condition? I always feel normal. I hope you will reply.

as u can see , the maths that a pilot uses is not that hard ! acually computers do probably all the things that the pilot have to calculate , but u will need maths in flight exams in the aviation school .. so u have to be not bad at maths and to know probably only the basics .. however , u don't have to give up , u have to improve yourself in maths and consider it like very important and u can't do shit without it in the future , besides , physics is important to , so try to improve both of them and never give up ;) i'm so bad at maths but good at physics and i want to be a pilot too ;) at least be good at only one of them

It sounds like a waste of mental capacity and time when all of those calculations can be made by instruments and technologies that have been at our disposal for awhile now. It's a shame that with all of the tech we have access to we make people waste time on things like this and make it "part" of they're jobs when it can be much easier for everyone. Great vid👍🏼👍🏼

How to define 'Good at math'? Eventhough morden aircraft technology makes pilot less work, it doesn't means you don't even need to think. Think about AC143, hundred tons of glider made emergency landing in Gimli, it that supposed to happen?! The more knowledge, more skills will help you become a better pilot. Yeah, being a pilot doesn't really need good at math, but that's mostly crapy pilot.

If you can’t do math in you’re head you won’t make it as a pilot.

I disagree, I have worked as a pilot for 16 years from instructing to airlines and consider a person's ability to do mental math non essential.

@@PilotEffect im worried because I signed up for a PPL program and I am not good at math. The instructor is very strict and I worry he will get mad at me. I have heard math will be coming. And we can't use calculators.

You need to be able to do math I. Your head, you moving at 1000 to 300 knots you don’t have tine to pull out your calculator to figure stuff out.oh and DPEKs don’t allow ForeFlight.
