Depends who you ask. Old Toby is the finest weed in the Southfarthing, according to Bilbo. Merry would suggest that Longbottom Leaf is the finest weed in the Southfarthing.
Drank , smoked , went to Mass every Sunday and responded in Latin , dressed sharply , knew dozens of languages , was a good friend , lead Men in combat in the horror and tragedy of the Great War and was a great Husband and Father .I wish I was a quarter of what he was .
I love Tolkiens smoking the way he lights his pipe with such grace and style is absolutlely a joy and the look of enjoyment on his face when his pipe is finally lit and he can relax is priceless.
haha :D his facial expressions. He was such a genius. He even looks like a character out of one of his own books! his spirit lives on through the pages of his work and the woods surrounding where he grew up, echoing back those ancient lost tales... :)
Grosvner Mcaffrey funny enough I smoked cigs and a pipe depending on my mood , but always liked the pipe more , I gave it up about 36 years ago , but always loved the smell of pipe tobacco burning , my son bought me a pipe for my 70 birthday very tactile things , after a few months of it laying there he suggested I gave it a try , so I did and I find it very relaxing 😎 I don't inhale just sip and blow out the smoke 💨 when the mood takes me , as a footnote I was diagnosed with prostrate cancer two years ago , I've always been active and eaten healthy, so you never know , just enjoy what puts a smile on your face .
@MrWSherwood -- When I uploaded all the Tolkien videos on UA-cam, the extracts came from various documentaries, J.R.R. Tolkien An Awfully Big Adventure, J.R.R.Tolkien Master of the Rings and J.R.R.T.: A Film Portrait of J.R.R. Tolkien. They are all quite difficult to find, and I think I was lucky enough at the time to get my hands on them. But since then, the BBC opened its archives. I have uploaded 'In Their Own Words: British Novelists' where most of Pr Tolkien's videos come from.
I know I am two years late, but not sure what pipe, but, Mr. Tolkien used to smoke Capstan navy cut. A blend of pipe tobacco, you can still acquire today. Haven't tried it myself, will eventually though.
@sonofherne hey don't be so quick to judge the guy. I have read Tolkien's books while high several times and every time I do I feel nothing but awe and admiration for the pure genius of the man. Cannabis allows me to fully immerse myself in the universe he created. Sure, you don't NEED weed to become immersed, but it definitely doesn't hurt. I realize that Tolkien himself (probably) didn't use cannabis, but that doesn't mean that cannabis users can't appreciate him.
Also hallucinogens especially LSD especially at crucial chapters moments i.e Flight to the Ford Breaking of Fellowship Dead Marshes Mount Doom Fields of Comellen
However, for most pipers it's not an addiction the same way cigarettes is, if that's what you're thinking. They're perfectly capable of putting it down for months at a time with no problems, and often demonstrate just that. It's a daily, weekly, or other interval ritual altogether different from the continuous physical demands of cigarettes, and performed with a different attitude. :) But you're right, sometimes it does make you look intelligent. And sometimes you look like an idiot :(
I'd argue against the existence of those "neurological defects," but you seem pretty convinced that they're there, so there's really no point. But one thing I will stand by is a person's right to make up their own mind about an activity, to weigh the pros and cons, and to make their own personal decision on whether or not to partake in it. You may have come to the conclusion that weed has more negatives than positives, but most pot smokers clearly haven't (considering that it isn't addictive).
That's a very glib comment, not useful, & frankly, offensive to Tolkien & any intelligent person. You don't need to take drugs to create something magical. He's a literary genius & scholar of the highest calibre.
My uncle used to smoke like that. Reminds me much of him. Smoking is an ugly habit, but if you have to smoke, at least be like Tolkien and smoke a pipe
@TheBackOfTheBoat Now who's being so quick with their assumptions? In answer, I grew up through the seventies. To have an opinion on anything you need to have experience otherwise it's just unqualified opinion. To be fair, I prefer pot smokers to violent abusers and drunks, but the neurological defects as well as many other seen and unseen symptoms are abundantly clear, and yet people still do it.
My goodness, see him sitting there with his pipe and beer, is sooo awesome. Such a shame his beautiful work is being destroyed by socialist feminist and critical race theorist clowns.
@TheBackOfTheBoat It implies your imagination is lacking if you require to use drugs to get a thrill or totally immerse yourself. TBH, users deserve to be judged. It's an illegal activity, and though people will deny it & justify it until the cows come home, the negatives still far outweigh any positive useage. We're not in the stone age, sorry.
Jesus saves from the guilt of sin by faith in his shed blood. That is why he came to earth, to die on the cross for our sins so we could go to heaven through faith in his blood. Repent of your sins and ask Jesus to come into your heart. Once you are saved from your sins, you are saved forever. Faith in Jesus is the only way to heaven. If you die in your sins you will burn in Hell and the Lake of Fire for all eternity. God bless.
He's like a perfect cross between Bilbo and Gandalf. I love the Professor!
Ian Mckellen observed Tolkien and he used him as a basis of his character, Gandalf in the movies.
McKellen knew Tolkien?
Nope. He was watching videos of Tolkien observing him trying to embody Tolkien in his character.
Smartteaser192 aha, thanks. But it's not impossible for them to have met, right?
Oh yeah! A privilege he would've shared with the late great Sir Christopher Lee.
That’s what makes an excellent actor and story teller. Someone who does the research and background of a character.
Ahhh... Old Toby. The finest weed in the Southfarthing.
I feel like I'm back at the green dragon. A mug of ale in my hand putting my feet up after a hard day's work
You smoke too much, Pip
@@GrosvnerMcaffrey only: you've never done a hard days work!

i now want to put down cigarettes and start smoking a pipe
I did it and I don't regret.
Do it. Pipe smoking is a beautiful experience and is definitely less harmful than smoking cigarettes.
Well done.
Claudio Brizuela more importantly, it's just cooler
@@anatoldenevers237 not to mention the far superior taste.
Wow. The way he lits the pipe and dispels the cloud of smoke with the hand, I usually do that. Now I’ll always think of him when doing it.
Respect for this guy, what a legacy. I half expected him to send multi-coloured smoke rings up the chimney.
I love the way he raises his eyebrows
my nigga tolkien blowing o's
it should have been called "Tolkien Smolkien"

one of my all time favorite human beings RIP JRR Tolkien and thanks for the great and legendary LOTR

honestly watching him smoke makes me want to go back smoking again after quitting for some time , he makes smoking look cool XD
A pipe every now and then isn't too bad

If only the ladies of his time had a clue what kind of mac daddy they were dealing with with this man.
He didn't belong to earth... He's beyond an angel...
Everybody smoked in those days
The big toke himself
that's beer on the table?? Genius!
I'd never think i would feel good by watching someone smoke
My Man JR💨💨💨🍺
I do love pipe smoking! I wonder what his favorite pipe and tobacco was?
Might be late, but from what I learned he was quite fond of Capstan Navy Cut Blue.
Erinmore flake
Tolkien smoking a pipe is just pure badass. Only Clint Eastwood comes close.
He liked Navy Flakes
Gandalf?
now I understand why hobbits are so obsessed with pipes.
vapers take note, this is how its done

I so want to try the blend.

I wonder if he got half his inspiration from smoking the weed pipe there lol.

Considering the stories he made up, I wonder what's in that pipe.
Simply tobacco
