An 18th Century Nighttime Skincare Routine

- Us creatures have been aiming for beautiful skin for thousands of years. How did we take care of our skin over 200 years ago? Today, we'll recreate a recipe from the 1772 publication Toilet of Flora and use it as it was all those years ago.
Let's talk about this cold cream from 1772. In this video I had on sunscreen and a bit of rouge on my cheeks. Off camera I tested it afterwards by using my regular micellar water on a cotton pad to see if any sunscreen or gunk was left behind. The cotton came back clean. I'm impressed! Somehow it also did not break me out which is an even greater miracle. Below you will find the instructions for making it translated from the original, which you can find at the end of the video. Recreating period skincare is my guilty pleasure! I have so much fun doing it. Thank you for joining along. 😊
Cold Cream, or Pomatum for the Complexion (1772)
A little under a teaspoon of White beeswax
A little under a teaspoon of jojoba oil, to substitute for Spermaceti which is now (rightfully so) illegal to harvest
4 tablespoons of Almond oil
3 tablespoons of distilled water
Combine your beeswax, jojoba oil and almond oil in a small pot. Melt on low heat till fully liquid, mixing all the while. This happens quickly so be sure to watch closely. Once melted remove from your heat and set aside to cool for a few minutes. Pour into a mortar and into it slowly stir in with a pestle distilled water, being sure to only add a little bit at a time. Mix up with the pestle until you have a smooth cream.
* I really recommend using a mortar and pestle for this, as was recommended in the original instructions. The cream seems to become smoother and creamier when using this method vs any other. Toilet of Flora later mentions that some women enjoy the addition of rose water.
please do more historical beauty recipes!! i love this!! spa day 😍
If you'd like to see more historical skin and haircare videos please refer to my playlist here of our past videos on the subject. These are some of my favorite videos to make! I love this topic. ua-cam.com/play/PLz-Qr9n4V_ZJgtOik_pNrKe3QMojzzhex.html
I use a handmade cold cream very similar to this one. Except for the addition of lavender, which is very gentle. Love it! Thanks for sharing this.😊
You guys are so cute 🥰kinda kinked but super adorable ❤
Are you secretly married?
As a soap and lotion maker, I love that you made this!! I love the cooking videos, but this was a great change up…and who doesn’t love kitty intermission? 💕
Thank you!
I make soap and lotion too! Love it. Need to make this and see if it’s better than the face cream I already make.
Excited to hear your thoughts about this!
@@xyztia12
Same! I make salves and facial creams, etc. with extremely basic ingredients; it never occurred to me to use a historical recipe. I've always just done tallow or meat grease and infused oil. I want to order a couple of old books.
As regular old person I appreciate it too
“I’m just glad I have a husband who knows how to read.” This was great. I loved seeing the two of you interact! I’d also love to see more videos of your historical beauty concoctions. And your cat is beautiful!
I was going to quote this comment too bc of Ron’s, “Thanks to you!” After🤣 HILARIOUS
Dating standards in the 1700s were a lot different huh
The lack of cinematic background music throughout the routine brought realism to the livelihood you've portrayed. I appreciate this a lot.
It’s weird to see the everyday lives of past people. I tend to think of the lives of past people in the same way as I think of fantasy characters. But there’s something so real about seeing this. Thank you!!
You put into words what I was thinking!
NOW.... THAT WAS REAL GOOD! PLEASE LET US SEEMORE OF THIS DAILY LIFE!!!!😊😊😊😊
YES!
Why are you yelling haha?!
@@conarc-d1037WHY NOT? 😂
I agree
I agree!!!
Cabin looks like fall and cozy 💕
A very relatable video. At least once a week: My wife "I'm exhausted I need to go to bed early". Ten minutes after getting in bed: Also my wife "I forgot my skin care" as she gets up and proceeds to spend the next 30 minutes on her skin care routine. 🤣
I'll do the same thing, and while I'm doing my skincare routine, our toddler wants to join me. So by the time I get done my skincare, cleaned up the flood that our toddler has made, and get her back to bed, my husband is already in lala land 😂😂😂
it's exhausting getting ready for bed. lol
This is my wife also, takes her forever.
no one needs 30 minutes of skin care at night..
@@MydNyteRayne Likely so. I think most people did a cursory wash with water jug and basin and whatever homemade soap was to hand. Any extra facial care was probably only an occasional thing.
I love when you make these little historical skits!!! You two are so cute together!!!
You really outdid yourselves this time. The snoring just capped it off! Great episode.
My grandma washed her face with lard soap her whole life. Her skin was flawless.
I make my own tallow whip for face cream. It’s delightful
My grandmother used to use soap made out of beef tallow. Those types of things sound so outlandish nowadays huh? I remember when she first told me that I thought she was joking bc I thought there was no way that would work lmao
I'm sure she also ate foods that were pure and free from preservatives outside of salt, smoke, and vinegar, too. That helps skin tremendously, too. God Bless 🥰
@@anonymousone2843 I don’t know about the rest, but as a child I loved vinegar so much I drank glasses of it with salt. My skin is also wrinkle free.
@@Narrowway7nice! Recipe? Please?❤
Watching this video was a gift!! More content like this, please!
You two are great!
they're both so cute!
Greetings from Scotland! This was such a cool idea and an interesting insight into historical skin care. Also your cat is so cute! 🥰 And the fake snoring was quite funny at the end 😂
I liked this!! Can you do more of just day to day stuff?! You two are funny! This is why I love your videos.
Such a delight to see this kind of video for women's health and beauty care!
Everything looks great and you're a stunner, Justine! Catch the C & C later. Have a glorious 🍂🍁🍂fall week & stay blessed!
I love your fall/Halloween decorations around the cabin!
I can't put into words how much I like your videos. You guys have spurred my interest in Colonial American history.
Such a lovely cream Justine! So organic and probably better than most. Granted people have different skin types but seems like it would work great on most and inexpensive. Mish Mish is absolutely gorgeous!!!
Love the cold cream, skin care routine. Always feels great to moisturize. Mish Mish break playing was so cute.
Greetings from Montana 👋😊Your cabin is looking so fall cozy ❤ kitty looks so happy and his fur looks so shiny! What a nice reminder for us ladies that we need to take time out for ourselves too! Have a blessed and beautiful week ❤🇺🇸❤🇺🇸❤🇺🇸
Not a lot of UA-cam videos make me laugh but the end of that with you guys snoring was absolute perfection and just what I needed today because I was having a bad day. Love you both thank you!
Yess, its funny how it calm us down inst it??❤
This is the best channel on UA-cam with the best content! You 2 are my absolute favorite 🥰
So glad you guys started this channel. SO unique from all the others. Always look forward to another vid.
Thank you 💜
Everything about this just seems so cozy and peaceful. We need MORE daily life♥️
Loved this video! You both are so sweet. Enjoyed watching a little clip of you living out your lifestyle oh and the cat intermission was priceless!
Kitty!❤️😺gives so cosy feeling and soooo light kind energy to the video!
I’ve been following your account and videos for months now and I just want to say, you’re a like a cup of hot chamomile tea at the end of a very rough day. I love your work and passion that you share with us and no matter how tough I’ve been beat up through the day I turn into your channel at night to help me relax and learn! Thank you for your fantastic work!
The cabin looks fabulous inside and outside! David Back.
I adore your re-enactments!! It’s been so long since we had one thank you! 🥰
These videos about routines make me so happy 🖤☕️
A much-needed cat break! I so enjoyed this -- the historical skincare routine is fascinating. It must smell delicious with the almond oil. Thank you.
Great video as always. Loved seeing how life was back then as far as how things were made, cooked and the short kitty intermission was adorable!
Mish Mish is earning his keep, now he's the star of the intermission segment and is perfect for the job😊
Ooo right up my alley! Thanks Justine!
There's that sweet Mishmish❤ 🐈⬛ I love the sounds of the night 🌙 while you make your beauty cream. 😂 Ron the Impatient one! us woman know what we're doing. Thanks guys love yah ❤
So that's why your skin is so clear and beautiful. Thanks for this. I love you guys videos so much.
I love to watch how my ancestors lived!!! Thank you😊
I enjoyed this video so much! I'll be making myself some face cream from this receipt. Please do some more videos like this one. Our ancestors were regular people with regular lives, and we need to be reminded of that sometimes. Ya'lls re-enactment gave us a little peak into their lives, and Mish Mish did a smashing job portraying the typical family pet😂😅
Love yall❤
No matter how bad my days occasionally are - today was a doozie! - watching this priceless channel always resets my mood to a happy one. I love Early Americana &
O😊am interested in the everyday details of how people lived back then so this video was perfect. I love vintage self care rituals especially and really enjoyed you showing us how ladies cared for their skin in this time period. The cameo of your cat was an added bonus - what a charmer! You and Ron were truly meant for each other and l too strive, to the best of my abilities, to ' be in the world but not of the world'. Actually l try to not even be in the world at all! I'm definitely going to try this wonderful cold cream recipe. May l ask what book 📖 it was you were reading?
" I read it in a book"😂
@@lydiabond5393 You are a true fan if you know that line
😂😅
Is this your actual home or just for videos?
Looks lovely!
I love the nighttime videos! It was so relaxing! ❤️
This was so cozy and such a joy to watch!
Thank you for sharing this delightful video with us and the recipe is quite easy to make too
Yes, I thought so too! The ingredients are easy to source.
you guys genuinely have some great content!
Aw thank you! We have too much fun making these. It's just Ron and I.
That was great! Loved the ending. Ron’s a hoot. Justine your a natural beauty. I needed a good chuckle, it made my day. Thanks guys!😄❤️
This was so relaxing and nice! You all are so adorable too ❤
I love this! I make many salves and balms. Presently, I am steeping birch bark in olive oil to make a sore joint rub🙂
My cat was sitting on my lap staring at Mish Mish during his close up. She thinks he's handsome 😊
On a more human note- I love seeong you're personalities shine through in the (presimably) improvised when you two chat. It's really charming. 🤗
You two are the best! I needed this tonight. Thank you!!!❤
Same here after a long day, they are awesome indeed
Awesome video! I love the humor and ease in your relationship! As someone married for 32 years, I can tell you that that friendship is so important in lasting marriages! And I adore MishMish! Such a beautiful boy! Do any of your period books have recipes for cat food or treats? Catnip balls or something? ❤
I read that in the 1800s, in London I think, some English city, there was a society of "cat meat" men who had a guild complete with dues and membership rolls ( "cat meat" meaning men who gather meat for cats to eat, not the meat of cats.) So I think there was a kind of pet food industry of sorts.
I recently went to Petersburg, IL (an hour from my house) & visited Lincoln’s state park site during the music festival! They had people in the houses explaining history and it was so neat to see how everything was back in that time. It was like getting a feel of you & Ron for a little bit. I definitely was thinking of you guys the whole time!!
Enjoyed the video on skincare, was surprised how quickly the cold cream came together. Actually anything about personal care would be interesting. I wonder if they prescribed to self care, probably not too busy with daily life requirements😅 I wonder about haircare back then too.
GRACIAS GRACIAS GRACIAS!!!❤❤❤ Por hacer ésta serie!!! 🤗😘💐Son una pareja hermosa!!!💜💜💜
I love the kitty break with mish mish !!
You guys are something else! Love yall!
I had no idea cold cream was made over hot coals! 😁 Loved the Mish Mish break! 😃 Two hours later.... 🤣
I have ASMR like crazy and if I lived back then, I'd be overloaded with tingles. I love this channel because it's educational, entertaining, and relaxing all in one.
Five star acting, I've never seen more convincing sleeping and the flower on my face line was a complete home run. Haha! 😆😂
Loved it!
I couldn't imagine finding or using spermiceti oil, but it's definitely cool to see that women were using the same products/routine we do today, but fit their time period.
And that bed!! Oh the horror hanky panky night must have brought on the whole household. 🙈😂😂😂😂
5:56
When I watch this it is a time travel for me.
Thanks ❤
I need to know what that portable coal stove thingy is called! How cute is that?! I love this video. I'm into making my own salves, but I thought you needed special emulsifying wax (not to mention preservatives) to make creams, so I've been putting it off. It never occurred to me to just try adding water and mixing. I'm sure these don't keep like a salve would, but it would be great for making small batches and using within a few days. I'm gonna try it!
It’s a brazier
That was great! And the cat break was just the content we all needed.
This was so entertaining; actually, very informative with the cream. You guys r too much😅😂🦋💜
We love love when you add story! Thanks you two.
I bet that smells yummy. I love almond oil…
I watched this with my boyfriend on the big screen TV after dinner tonight. So awesome and just naturally funny, I am overjoyed with the lines
Can you guys imagine sleeping in that type of a bed now?….. my mattress literally is like the most comfortable million inches high mattress in the world.
Why did the pretend snores make me giggle so much. You two are adorable. I've just discovered you, and will be taking my time watching it all. Brightest blessings!
❤you both so cute love episodes
This was so much fun. You are beautiful, Justine, even without the cream!
Ahh cool something different
I’ve been missing videos like this. Thank you Justine for recipe for making a natural face cream.
Good Video. Why didn't they just make a huge batch at once and have it last for half a year? Keep up the great work.
It would go rancid after several weeks especially as most people did not have access to air tight containers like we do now. This has both water, and oil in it. You could make enough for a month! After that though it will no longer be fresh.
The snoring at the end 😄
I love all your videos but as an esthetician/skin care junkie who loves/uses and recommends a very old cold cream recipe, I love it extra. I use all these ingredients on my face daily and I don't have skin issues at age 43. Thank you for sharing this!
Mish-Mish!!!!!! ❤️
I love this video! It’s so fascinating to see how things were done, and this beauty treatment / cold cream is especially wonderful! Oh and the cat “intermission” was especially adorable! 🥰 Thank you so much for educating and teaching us all of these wonderful processes used in daily life! I’m definitively getting the ingredients & making this for myself! You 3 are so amazing and the time & preparation you put into each video is VERY much appreciated❣️❤️
What the heck is that yellow veggie on the right??
That is a pumpkin! Just like people they come in all shapes and sizes. ❤
Cool! lol I've never seen one like that before
Great episode! I love your cat and your banter. It was very funny
I’m amazed at how skillful you are in so many aspects of the time period, I would like to know where you learned this techniques
i love yalls sillyness coming out in this video it had a lot of personality i enjoyed that. thank you for the smile
I just started getting into skin care. I found a great skincare line with aloe.
Love this video
You guys are such an adorable couple. It's lovely to watch.
Thank you for yours videos! Past comes back alive! A kiss from Italy!
I LOVE YOU GUYS! Thank you so much for sharing all these amazing recipes! I can't get enough of your videos and oh the humor is beyond so enjoyable! Love the bed creeking! Lol
I love all the effort you put into your videos 💕 all the different camera angles are nice!
Best thing I've ever done with UA-cam is subscribing to this channel.
Gives me peace and takes me away from this modern world we live in.
❤
Please do more of the day to day activity videos. They are my favorites and the acting is Oscar worthy!! 😂😂 so fun!!
Lol I love when you do your skits!
Much love, stay blessed ❤️🙏🏽
The past being brought to life....love it. Thank you Justine 💐
Hi... Sometimes we deeply feel going back in time to enjoy the Simplicity / Serenity of life again.
Thanks for the recipe. Place looks lovely. I’ve got the giggles.
You two are adorable!
You two are so cute! You make a great team. I loved the snoring at the end! Another great video!🥰🌹🛌🥱
estos videos me encantan es como volver al pasado gracias por sus videos me encanta todo lo que es rustico y muebles antiguos y todo eso .saludos
This was adorable. I loved the MishMish break & hearing Ron complain about how long Justine’s beauty regimen took. 😂 This cream does look great though. I’ll have to try making it. Finally, the cabin looks so cozy. It’s like a tiny dream home. ❤
I just found your channel and I love it so much! Especially the beauty and skin care receipts! Sending love from Australia
Loved this! Gives me an appreciation for modern plumbing and fresh running water lol. Everyday life in various time periods is fascinating. There is such an emphasis and interest in royals/aristocracy, but everyday people keep countries and society running. Very interesting to glimpse into the lives of everyday people. Thank you for sharing all you do!
There is just something so calming…so peaceful about this way of life
I just found your videos. It really inspires me to take a step back from modern things. We live on a farm and the 1800 farmhouse is still here, but not in good shape. I remember my grandmother cooking on the wood stove, and her mother-in-law used the open fireplace. There is also an out building that was the summer kitchen. I wish I had the money to make all of it work again!
