    Nice one Jody. I used to struggle so much with vertical uphill 7018, but after years of practice and watching you, I seem to be much better at it now. I had to weld up a crack in a butt plate on an 8" bore cylinder the other day. I couldn't use the pipe rollers because of the transfer tube. I basically did two vertical welds, starting at 3 and 9, and working up to the 12 position. It was ground out deep. Used 1/8" for two passes then 5/32" for a nice wide cover pass. It turned out awesome! Always makes ya smile when you can lay down a good looking bead. 👍🏻

    Hey Jody, I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but if you weld away from your ground clamp (hook it to the bottom of your piece) you can prevent getting ark blow. You build magnetism as you weld up the joint and it become more noticeable as you approach your ground. Great vids and keep up the good work.

    Jody, you're very humble for a pretty awesome weldor. Regarding the welding fumes, Miller makes a really low profile respirator, can't come up with the part number at the moment, but I'm sure a google or Amazon search will reveal the mystery. Also, I put a little fan right behind me. I have it behind me so it doesn't blow anything around too much where I'm welding, but it keeps my welding hood ventilated and the smoke going away from me. Doesn't take much either and the cool air sure feels nice on my ugly mug.

    When I was in welding school we used donald duck/mickey mouse for our toe count, which is quite amusing when you walk up the row of bays and hear a chorus of out of sync welding students chanting "donald duck, mickey mouse" over and over. lol

Try holding your toes a bit less, move a bit slower over the center and keep your weave a bit tighter and that slag should just fall off! (~^, I have learnt so much from all your TIG videos. Keep up the good work champ.

    I use nothing but the pipeliner welding helmet. There is a respirator from miller that fits great underneath it. I had to mig weld a ton of stainless making mining equipment. I used that and it worked well and was as comfortable as you can be wearing it for 10 hours with a beard.

    Great video! I believe everyone wanting to learn to weld, mig, tig, stick or any type should always start learning the basics with basic stick welding. Many feel it is the toughest to learn and maybe so but after learning the basics all other procedures come much easier. Many times you can find a used machine for $50 or less, buy the Lincoln bible, and you're off and welding. Thanks, Ed K Cleve. Oh.

      That little ahp welder runs a 7018 great

    • @KnolltopFarms
      @KnolltopFarms 8 років тому

      Don't forget to run some 6011 fast-freeze as well, the whip and pause is a good skill to have for root beads on tough fit-ups. Plus if you get good with it you can even get a 'stack of dimes' look to your welds!

    • @jfaulkner1234
      @jfaulkner1234 8 років тому +2

      Ill keep that in mind. I intend to eventually learn tig as well, but I want to get good at 7018 first. I will mostly be welding 1/8" thick carbon steel tubing, angles, etc. so the simplicity of stick welding has a lot of appeal.

    • @KnolltopFarms
      @KnolltopFarms 8 років тому +1

      I'd recommend 6010 instead, but the new inverter machines don't like running it, so 6011 is as close as you can get. My main usage of it is for tacking things up before welding it out with 7018. It is much faster because it doesn't form a slag cap on the tip of the rod that prevents easy restriking like 7018 does. I fell in love with 6010 back when I learned to weld at the tank+pipe outfit I worked for out of highschool. It's a very forgiving rod that helps you get things done when conditions aren't perfect.

      vertical is a pain, uphill with a 7018,AC,I could do it twenty years ago, I'm just not that coordinated ,anymore, some of the last trailers I built,the verticals welds ,looked terrible, I needed a DC machine, so bad, I ground some of the joints down, and rewelded them.

      patthesoundguy I have one of the Miller respirators that fits under my welding hood but I found that it didn't really work as good as I hoped it would. I would suggest trying out a half mask with breathing tubes that go behind your head with screw in filters that are much better at filtering Particles and gases. Hey Jody,
    My current employer is an old school pipeline welder. we currently do a lot of farm equipment repair but mostly just fab stuff. whenever we have to do anything structurally, he insists on us using 5/32nd 7018. can you do a video of running that rod uphill. I am decent with 1/8th but can't seem to get the 5/32nd to stay put.

  • @whitedoggarage
    @whitedoggarage 8 років тому

    Jody the 7018 is a low hydrogen rod. Here in Australia trade transformer machines had a second tap off line for low hydrogen rods. Effectively it was a higher voltage (from memory maybe 45 volts versus 25 volts but don't quot me on that), but reduced maximum amps line. It was designed to give you an easier start and run for a low hydrogen rod. You can run them on the normal electrode tap but it takes a bit more skill. I see your Miller machine only has the two leads, one for earth and one for the electrode. So are you just running on a low voltage setting?

    I have a question about a water cooled tig setup. Is there any reason you can think of that I shouldn't use silicone tubing for my gas, and coolant tubing? Thinking it is really flexible and good for 500 degrees. The cost is a little much but I don't mind that. It seems worth it for the extra flexibility. What are your thoughts? Thanks. Ian Adair. Mr. Jody I realy like your vids and I find them to be very educational, I've been working in constructions for the last 4 years or so and had to learn how to weld stick without anny formal classe, mind you I'm from Romania and there are many regulations but manny "contractors" learn to build the old fashion way, for small out of the citty jobs authoritys let us be; annyway this year I have put to good use some of the tricks and tips so thank you for that. Even thou I usualy use 6013 for 3 mm steel square tubes I sometimes use 7018 for 6 mm and up, and I weeve T joints, so I ask when should I weeve and when should I use stringers, for structural steel; so far I've been doing something like stringers when the gap is to big or some type of bodge

    I can never get 7018 rods to run right; arc is tough to keep lit and control and the slag never seems to want to come off. I don't know if I'm trying to run them too hot/cold, it's moisture issue with the rods or I just suck and need more practice haha. Any pointers? most of the arc welding I do is on used oil field pipe.

    Is it easier to use 7018 vs 6013 doing uphill like this? I done some frame repair on my truck recently that had bottom, uphill, and overhead welding. The bottom and overhead went fine using 6013 but the uphill puddle just kept pouring down. I'm still kinda new at welding though I'm getting pretty good I cant seam to get uphill welds.

    Hey Jody, your 7018 videos helped me get the best looking uphill welds in my class. I started it about a week and a half ago and was getting ugly welds thst went in the bottom of the scrap out of shame then i kept practicing and trying to do what you do in the videos and i got welds with no undercut that layed into a t joint completely flat. What kind of applications call for 7018? I like this rod and could see myself making a career out of stick welding if i got a few aws certifications.

    Great video Jody. I have a question about where your amps where set at , I just started welding in the 3f position yesterday for school and the teacher suggested running at 105 amps , we were welding on 3/8th plates. I personally felt it might be a little to hot , and I’ve also seen other UA-cam channels suggest running at 80-90 amps for the same 3f on 3/8th plate also using a 1/8th 7018 rod . You went up to 130 I just want your input on the big amp range difference, I understand a lot has to do with the machines being different but if there’s any other factors that could benefit me I would like to know. Anyone feel free to reply with their own knowledge and experience. Thanks

    Jody , is it posdible or too frustrating you train to that with 6013 ? up to now I have tons of drift and can only see the puddle when waving large enough do the first pass not successful yet. Do you loik at the puddle below ? heat regulation is really not easy for me with that old buzz box I use ( but no more than 3 works "daily" training and not with much help locally).
    Thanks

    • @IsaacOLEG

      I find answerd on the 6013 . they are uded gor schooling as they are less easy than others, so qualifying up with them will make your use of 7018 easier later.
      so I train with those. the arc lenght should be a little longer, and electrode positive for first pass helps with penetration. Regards from France. ps we also have "rutil cellulose and " basic rutile" electrodes. just in similar categories than 6013 and 7018, for the second ones theyy are rutile with higher content of cellulose so they can be used descending.

    hello all. is the :triangle" progression uded too? long stop in middle and less the sides , only for first pass .? (called "chrismas tree") thanks.
    I had to put off the "arc force" control on my inverter, as it added penetration but when I was in the middle and hotter I do not change the settings as I would end up with too little, and short arc made the src force active creating too deep undercuts on the sides.

    Learned a bit from you and a few other tubers, just want to say thanks and show appreciation because i now support my family with my hood and electrodes.
    Have you tried a figure 8 for the cap? The heat dispersion makes better looking patterns and gives the same penetration as your zig zag 2 second. In this respect, the pool cools behind your stick whille you edge the sides. When finished it should look like two rows that weave as c pass stringers.
    Ps!!
    You got that new hood and never flipped your darkscreen to grinding lol
    Thought id pick at you a little, keep the videos rollin brother

    Hey Jodie. What kind of respirator would you recommend? I work in the trades and I'm looking for a good quality one to fit under my welding hood. I would also like one that would catch fine particles from grinding dust and cut off wheels. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

      Robert Allen I use a 3m 7500 series with those same filters. I like it better than some others because it vents downwards so it doesn't fog up my helmet.

      Robert Allen I have a half mask respirator that has breathing tubes that go behind your head. it comes in handy when using a grinding shield or a welding helmet plus you can use chemical filters that are way better than any p100 paper filter. the filters I use have a paper pre filter with little bits of charcoal under that that filter out a lot of gas here's a similar one. www.airgas.com/product/Safety-Products/Respiratory-Protection/PAPR/p/HONBP1201M?gclid=Cj0KEQiAzNfDBRD2xKrO4pSnnOkBEiQAbzzeQdp5zm7LJXI2EgKoT8lJxD4YgmPRkcWUL7NI06aSc4kaAgd48P8HAQ&fo_c=306&fo_k=f972ed694218cb06b6f26386dc91881d&fo_s=gplaus&SEM:Google:PLA.US:All_Items:Non-brand:pla:Airgas:PPC::HONBP1201M::Revenue&s_kwcid=AL!4811!3!151173097184!!!g!282341095154!&ef_id=WEH5ggAAACMLMa8g:20170112005932:s

    • @weldingtipsandtricks
      @weldingtipsandtricks  8 років тому

      with A/C stick , the welding machine makes a big difference. There is a 7018 rod made just for AC and it helps on small AC welders. otherwise you might be better off with something like a 6011 for uphill.
      6013 works too but is hard to distinguish the slag from the puddle

    I learned in the shipyards, General Dynamics EB division, stringer beads only, and temper bead each layer. Seeing that big fat weave makes me cringe. Thank you for your dedication to the trade! I was a HY-80 and Nuclear welder. ( sorry I made the comment before I heard you mention the stringer bead protocol )

    • @sanford198
      @sanford198 7 років тому

      SheikYerbuty Can you expound on "temper bead"?
      Also, love the Zappa handle.

    • @SheikYerbuty
      @SheikYerbuty 7 років тому

      The idea is to draw the heat away from the base metal. The hull was 4"
      thick with a 30* bevel, (temp sticks 200* and 300*) And we used stringer beads. When you get to a
      width of two beads, for example, each one touching the base metal, the
      third bead lies atop the two, down the center drawing the heat (tempering) from the base metal. Each bead width can not exceed 1.5 times the thickness of the electrode. The final bead(s) for each layer can not touch the base metal. Then they were visually inspected and x-rayed, and in some cases air-arced out. Man, having flashbacks of all that data. It was a fun time I loved that work. Was trained at the AMBIT Navy school. Went to Hartford School of Welding back in 1974 for 6 mos. We had to pass a test to get into AMBIT to pass another test to get hired ...sorry for going on, and on, I had a nostalgic moment...

      SheikYerbuty If I'm picturing that right, after bead #3, looking down the cross section of the weld, it wouldn't be flat across, but humped where bead #3 was placed. How does that work as far as subsequent passes (4, 5, 6, etc) and maintaining a flush-to-slightly reinforced profile? or do you leave slight valleys between 1 and 2, for 3 to go in?

    Not a professional welder, welding uphill 7018, the weld drips down, what should I do to correct this. Running 95 Amps. Also, my arc keeps cutting out while welding,
    These are old rods that are not kept in an oven, is this a sign of moisture in the rods.

    • @ThunderFeet00
      @ThunderFeet00 5 років тому

      I run a wider bead than a normal flat position. Just drag the rod over a bit more and the weld settles back in due to gravity.

    • @greasydot

      If at all possible before you strike a new rod, move your ground to a new location. Arc blow is a pain, but you can learn to beat it with rod angle and ground placement.

      When you say butterfly weave, do you mean with 6010 on a horizontal weld?

    • @KnolltopFarms
      @KnolltopFarms 8 років тому

      No, it's an uphill weave specifically used for the cap that has a distinctive ripple pattern. Kinda like a stick-figure bird or something, you'd likely know it if you'd seen it. It's an old pipeliner and boilermaker technique you just don't see anymore. I think it took too much time for little to no added benefit, I don't think it was metallurgically unsound, but I'm unsure so that's why I asked. Thanks for the reply to both of you, hopefully someone else may know.

      Knolltop Farms I know alot of older welders that circle the toe and its just another way of depositing more at the toe, like a pause but keeping the rod moving.

    • @KnolltopFarms
      @KnolltopFarms 8 років тому

      I cannot do it myself, it was already out of practice by the time I worked in the tank farms starting in the 80's. But, I was told you make little stick-figure birds, with a pause in the middle. I don't see how there's room for that even if, but who knows really...I wish "Grandpa Joe" would come out and tell us, LOL!

    first time i took my stick structural test, i failed due to an accidental arc strike. I welded it perfectly all the way to the cap and when i was putting away my stuff i sneezed, and the rod was still connected (and in my hand), and accidentally bumped the plated smack dab on the middle of my cover pass. Couple hundred dollars wasted and i felt like a freaking moron.

    Anyone have any tips on helping me out? Ive been working on practicing my vertical but cant seem to keep my weld from having a crown to it, the weld will be uniform and clean, but will always have a bump in the middle, im primarily practicing stringers at 125 amps, and am getting good penetration and no undercut, but the bump in the middle will be there regardless of how good or bad i do.

      Jody long arced before he came back to the puddle if you noticed. That created a higher amperage and voltage which if you could have seen the bottom side of the rod it melted the flux/slag off the previous weld. One of the reason to start up where you stopped on your weld. The flux/slag doesn't seem to be as thick. When I was welding pressure vessels in a job shop, the WPS stated you had to feather at each stop. I wish I would have had Jody as an instructor 35 years ago. He is really sharp.
