  • Fighting the monster that consumes the project budget: equipment failure! My JVC Everio GZ- HM320BU camcorder a.k.a. the "uppy cam" is experiencing a failure of the side screen that involves internittamt video and the non-functioning of the buttons and laser touch selector. I'm lead to believe that it is the failure of a flat flex cable. I sourced a set of 2 cables on eBay for $13.98 (including postage from China) and they arrived 9 days later. Here is my attempt to repair my broken camcorder.
The tools I used were a size 000 screwdriver and a pair of long tweezers. I also used a pair of needle drivers and a pair of specialty ENT forceps but the repair can be done without them. Be sure to keep track of your screw locations, they are not all the same size.
The flex cables were found by Googling my model number and the term "flex cable". This is not a tutorial, this is not a how-to, this is me going through the motions and hoping it worked. Your results may vary, the onus is on you to decide if your skills can complete this repair. I take no responsibility for your actions, you have been warned.

Ive been an Electronic Engineer for 40 years. No way i'm going to do that except maybe to play. My eyes are shot after years of staring at drawings. My hats off to the designers that designed the mechanical end also to the assemblers in the factory.

It was an easy choice: $7 part or $300+ for a new camera. Glad my eyes and fat fingers cooperated. Cheers!

Dziękuję za Twój film! Naprawiłem flex w swoim Everio (GZ HM 335 BE) oglądając Twój film. Trudna robota ale poradziłem sobie. Stawiam piwo jak przyjedziesz kiedyś do Polski :)

dude that cardboard with double side tape idea is fucking aces. i usually set the screws down in sections in the same pattern i took them out. but sometimes i accidentally hit them. i'm def going to use your idea in the future. my screen on this fucking camera stopped working during charging the battery. this is one teardown im not looking forward to and not sure if itll even work but everyones videos point to this cable being the issue

I used to work full time in electronics, have a couple of college degrees in it, changing a ribbon cable is the easy part, getting to it and getting the thing back together is the challenge, they should have a college course on that lol

The tiny magnet within the two piece cover of the hinge, which snap apart, is somewhat of a challenge! It is tiny and round. It fits withing a hole of the black half, and not the chrome half.

I have the same issue and the flex cable ended up braking on my camera a few years ago and I was going to send it into a repair shop. But I ended up not doing so and decided to look up a repair shop here where I live. And I found a bunch of repair videos here on youtube. So I came across this video and now ill be ordering a new flex cable soon. And ill be getting a set of cables so if it ever happens again ill be prepared. My camera is a different model in the same brand but the video still helps.

Glad you found it of use. The cables are so cheap I bought a couple of them just in case. Good luck and let us know how it went.

Great work on the camera! Absolutely beyond me and my interests. My hat is off to you!
    Acronym issues:
    Crap - Wikipedia
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crap
Acronyms. The acronym CRAP may refer to: Commandos de recherche et d' action en profondeur, the former name of France's Commando Parachute Group. Apparently the French didn't give a _ _ _ at first.
No entertaining legitimate acronyms for "shit," even in non-English tongues. I guess everyone, uh, (use scatological phrase of choice) about this one.
    Onward and upward: cowboy guitar!

Sounds like a loose connection inside maybe? Might be able to open it and look for something loose? Hard to tell without seeing it.
