  • With Pokemon Sword and Shield's Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra announced, I've been digging hard through the Direct despite being sick looking for any cultural inspirations I could find. And gang, between the new regions, Kubfu, Urshifu, and Calyrex, I think I hit the motherload! Saddle up gang, cause I think we're going to PokeChina!

Also, it could be a reference to the "Diamond Triangle" of Buddhism - a collection of sites that has the highest concentration of Buddhist architecture and artifacts. The two different forms of Urshifu might more represent the general difference between Northern and Southern kung fu. Northern styles generally are more fleet-footed, mobile, and have quicker strikes while Southern styles are more "grounded" with a focus of generating power while maintaining footing.

As someone who used to practice gung fu as a kid, I have to say that Rapid-Strike Style isn't inspired by Mantis style, but Eagle style. Notice the one-legged stance and the placement of its right fingers/claws (its kind of hard to describe with words but I'll try), the fore and middle fingers/claws are placed close together with the thumb extended downward resembling an Eagle Claw. Mantis style has somewhat similar finger placements, but the fingers are more arranged with the fore finger extended out more than the middle finger with significant spacing and the thumb placed close to the fore finger. Hope this helps and keep making great videos!

How very nice. I missed the Pokemon Direct at the start of the year, but I'll see if I can spot these references and rejoice in the new island locations for Galar ("inverted England/Scotland") that are coming out. The koma inu and the shishi are the first duo of creatures I thought of when hearing "duo of creatures with an open mouth, fierce one and a closed mouth, serene one" in the beginning. In a pretty early chapter/episode of Mushi-Shi, there are snail-like Mushi that are called "Ah" and "Un" that relate to hearing loss, ear infections, and in rare cases a year long illness where you hear constant noise from unseen spirits (the Mushi) before succumbing to the exhaustion caused by the illness. These Mushi feed on noise and silence respectively, another dichotomy in this "beginning and end" discussion.

Like if the DLC expansion may follow the British imposed colonization in India and China?

I think the single strike style is bajiquan and the rapid strike is probably baguazhang (though I admit that it looks like mantis or crane but based on it's description bagua is more likely). It would make more sense to me since they are based on guardians of spirits and the baji and bagua styles were used by the bodyguards of the last emperor of China.

Another thing about the Urshifu (which clicked in my mind once I saw the gigantimax versions) they also can represent the dichotomy of the martial arts of Ba Gua Xang and Shin Yi Quan, one being at the base more forceful and direct, the other being more circular and flowy, (other places is referenced being the fire vs water tribes in "Avatar: the Last Airbender", and Jet Li's "The One"). Oh, also those two styles make a triad with Tai Chi Quan, but that's less relevant unless they come out with a third form for Urshifu.

I see some form of pattern in this game. I saw a video talking about Copperajah, which indicates in its Pokedex entry that he belongs to a different region than Galar. Galar is basically UK, so Copperajah comes from a region based on India, which was a UK territory until mid 20 century. And now the expansion brings China, which was an UK colony too until the early 20 century, except for Hong Kong, which transferred to China some time ago.
I think Game Freak read a lot of UK history for this game, and I'm not gonna be surprised if they include references to any other of their former colonies in future DLCs for Sword and Shield.
    Greetings from Puerto Rico!

I think Urshifu's single-strike stance look more like Bajiquan than tiger style. It looks just like Akira from Virtua Fighter.
Also, its rapid-strike form looks more like it could be a form of Tai Chi, which is about moving with the flow, hence the water typing.

5:54 Okay, bit of a tinfoil hat theory here: What if the frozen tree we see in the main image for the crown Tundra, is Pokemon's version of the Bodhi tree? And what if it's the same tree we see in full bloom we see in the shot where we see all three Galarian versions of the Kanto birds at once? It might be just me, but the trees seem way too important to not have a connection with Calyrex

Single-Strike style Urshifu’s pose actually reminds me more of Bajiquan, since that forward-planted foot is similar to Bajiquan’s common technique of centering the self before striking with a stomp, and the most famous practitioner of Bajiquan, Li Shuwen, gained the nickname “No Second Strike” because of the sheer force he could put into a single blow (He’s also in the Fate series!).

Trust me I train it lol. I freaked out as soon as I saw it because of how obscure it is in the west. That's why it's called the single strike stance. The style has heavy use of sharp quick movements using the elbows shoulders and hips to attack.

Hmm... maybe part 2 of the expansion is Nepal if we're going with the Buddhist theme. The mountain kind of reminds me of the Himalayan mountain range on the borders of China, Tibet and Nepal. The only caveat is the frozen Gigantamaxed Pokemon trapped in the ice which makes it seem more like Antarctica.
