- Wild Hearts is pretty hype right now as a rival to Monster Hunter, but... something feels off... After having a deep cultural dive into Koei Tecmo's game, I think this time WE'RE the baddies hunting helpless kami.

Wait... Is Karakuri the predecessor to Japan's fascination with Mecha as well as the starting line for their robotics development? That sounds pretty cool.
Yes, it is.
Seems to me, more a fascination with clockwork taken further into inspirations for machines, engineering, and so on. You see this same thing playing out in parts of Europe, Such as Germany, Italy, France, and England. I'm leaving out America in this because I feel I would be biased. But we are not untouched by the a similar sentiment.
They are also a really fun Yugioh archetype.
Tea Server Karakuri intentionally messes up delivering a tea to a customer once in a while, so they are also a predecessor to moe culture.
Karakuri
So basically in this game we mercy kill all those corrupted kami. That makes the whole thing kinda sad, but I guess we dont have too much choice there. Maybe the plot of this game will be how we try to find a way to cure their corruption without killing them. Also I wonder, are you going to go over the mythical origins of each of Kemono? Because I feel like there is planty to explore there.
If we are the baddies, like in mononoke, it means that we are the REASON why the elements are corrupted and filled with hate
@@morriganrenfield8240 True, but sense that commiting a species wide suicide isnt exactly a very good option, we could still try to find a way to coexist with them without trying to murder us.
I think biggest thing preventing Toukiden from catching on isn't it's cultural connections, but brand loyalty. Monster Hunter was the original and to it's fixated and change fearing audience nothing else was going to matter. I saw nothing but vitriol anytime someone brought up Toukiden, God Eater or Freedom Wars, especially if someone compared them positively to Monster Hunter.
I had a guy throw a tantrum once when I talked about how much fun Freedom Wars' grappling hook was and how cool it'd be to have something like that to freshen up Monster Hunter. I wonder how they feel about it now.
Freedom wars did quite well honestly. Sony is stupid to have dropped the franchise
Then we got the Hand in Toukiden 2 and we were going all over the oni. Grappling everywhere is incredibly fun. I've been playing Gotham Knights and despite not being Batman and having a perfectly good vehicle, if I have the option to use the Grapnel Hook to go up to the rooftops, that's where I go.
I'm sure brand loyalty contributed a bit, but also don't forget, Toukiden first launched as a psp/vita exclusive in 2013,
And even with 2016's Toukiden 2, the series stayed exclusive to Playstation/PC.
IIRC, Monster hunter had not even touched a PlayStation device since MH:Freedom Unite (2008), with the last home console version being MH2 (2006) [I'm excluding the mmos]
So it's not really like Playstations (or PC) fans could *choose* monster hunter over Toukiden, the choice would be "do I also want a 3ds"
I'd argue part of this explains the huge rise in MH style games on the Vita (Freedom wars, god eater, even soul Sacrifice to a degree)
If anything, the multi-platform (and ps cross-play) features of the Toukiden 2 should have given it the advantage over Monster hunter, who at that point was pretty much 3ds exclusive. And most PC only gamers (for example) who'd never had a chance to play MH would have no loyalty to MH, but it still never caught on.
Sure, MH still has the brand reputation, so it "being popular", may have helped it beat out Toukiden 1/2, but I'd argue that's only one small part of it's success.
9:50 "What is my purpose?" "You deliver tea." "...Oh my god!!" "Yeah, life sucks for all of us."
On a completely unrelated note: why do everyone assume robots, even IF very humanlike, to have exactly same desires and motives as humans? Wouldn't it be, I dunno, logical if we made robots to inherently just love and enjoy doing their work (as much as those words may apply to whatever decision-making apparatus they may have)? Just a thought..
@@jwhite5008 I don't remember exactly where, but I have heard of fictional robots with that mindset, that they do those tasks because they *WANT TO.*
"we have to kill the gods"
Kratos: "you called?"
“Are we da baddies?”
"Have you been listening to ally propaganda again?"
4:07
"Characters were far more well rounded" and it had to be this character to show.
I see what you doing 🤣
Glad someone got that one. XD
7:44 Might add to that, "Gomen" is also a general term used by Samurais while slashing their victim (the full term is "kiriste gomen" or "Sorry for cutting down"), and also a term used while begging for forgiveness beyond just being sorry (kanji for gomen is comprised of a honorific "go" and a forgiveness/permission "men").
There's the Toukiden references! You did not disappoint.
I watched Oni last night and I kept thinking to myself, "gaijin's going to have a field day with this in the best way posible."
Oni? Is that another youtuber or a movie/show?
@@TheIdealofGreed it's a stop motion movie on netflix, it's a film that features many yokai and japanese themes. i don't want to spoil it, because i thought it was a good moive.
@@windsmith4048 Thank you
I think more like what Zangif said in Wreck-It Ralph We maybe the bad guy but we're not really a bad guy. We're just cleaning up a mess that our past folks left for us deal ^^;
I am sorry, but seeing that Karakuri Hammer Trap just BONK that bird made me laugh uncontrollably.
I have like 3 games in February that i want but THIS is the game I’m easily most excited for. Goddamn
You know what this just reminded me of? Princess Mononoke. Spirits becoming rampaging demons because of us!
I was taught that Karakuri meant either a really annoying clan from Yugioh or Puzzle Box when translated by my friend so It's un understatement to say it's a shock to find it's way, way cooler than any of that! * U * Looks like lots of cool ninja tech could be made using Wild Heart's Karakuri boxes, especially those traps and platforms!
A video game that parallels one of my favorite Miyazaki films? Great comcept!
“I don’t know where I am”
“I don’t know what is happening”
“All I know is that I must kill”
Hey Gaijin! I know you usually do video games and anime, but you should totally cover Netflix's new series Oni: thunder god's tale. I just binge-watched it today and definitely up your alley.
YES HOLY COW YES! NEXT VIDEO!
@@GaijinGoombah YO LET'S GOOOO!!!!! Thanks a bunch my man ❤
I dunno Gaijin Goombah about all this 'neglecting the Kami' and all that. What I do know is I want to use an umbrella to fight big monsters
Toukiden 1 and 2 were great, nice to see some appreciation for them!
I have a feeling that this is closer to the movie that was released here in the US as "Origin: Spirits of the Past," a Gonzo anime. Darn if the gameplay doesn't look like it'd be right at home in "Princess Mononoke," though.
This is basically every post-apocalyptic game, movie, series, etc. outcome from human ignorance, arrogance, and avaricious nature only to fall to the hands of the humble, meek, and admirable few to survive and win?
Awesome!? I want this game!!
I think you'd need to tell us more about the mitama and shinto before saying we play the bad guys, you dont really tell us why the mitamas might turn angry in the first place, for people who havent studied japan like you, we don't even know if its humans that caused the anger or if they're just always angry by default
Maybe its like unmedicated temper? I remember something thats basically random blind rage, and its only real treatment is meds.
I've been interested in visiting Japan some day but have no clue how to speak Japanese, ive seen some videos from a few other creators, but any sites or books for learning the language please?
Yeah, gods being unquestionably good is a fairly modern concept.
After watching this, i understand the the Auspices missions in FF14. This gave me the cultural shinto Metaphysical context to get what was going on. The game explains it, but it uses terms that have little meaning outside a familiarity that could safely be assumed of a Japanese audience but not a western one.
I was very on the fence with this game then i saw some of the gameplay with the bow and umbrella and how strangely the fortnite building stuff just seamlessly blends with the game play i kinda hooked now. Plus it helps that i think katakuri are kinda cool and weird and fascinating
There is this manga\anime called Kemono Jihen (its pretty good) where they call all those yokais, kamis, and even folkloric creatures from other countries as Kemono. I don't remember why, I think its just because its not human. But is curious that in this game they also don't use kami or something like that. I have a theory that those creatures where created by that shinning thread technology that they use in their karakuri and so the hunters know they are not really supernatural creatures
Robot Carnival just watched that a few weeks ago. God I feel old now. 90's Saturday morning anime on the Sci-Fi channel so long ago.
"We are the baddies!"
Me: I did a bad thing but I look good doing it ;)
I noticed that possible Princess Mononoke reference in King Tusk the moment I saw it which is kinda funny cause I barely remember the film itself. I'd like to try a demo of Wild Hearts and I hope we get one too. Lastly, Toukiden was dope and I loved the mitamas for the their artwork and lore bits.
I mean, I dislike blanketly saying "we're the baddies," especially when the baddies were centuries up the chain, but yeah that sounds about right. Though, I will say that I get the impression that the current characters are actively trying to restore balance, or at least some semblance of it, and in order to do that you've first gotta put down the crazed monsters.
You know it is funny, Stan Lee yes that Stan Lee worked to create a Manga series with the Author of one of my favorite series Shaman King and it uses the Karakuri names for humanoid robots born from splitting a soul into good and evil to fight and see which side is stronger. Ultimo. I admit I wasn't as fond of it as Shaman King but I think you'd like it Gaijin.
Is a old game called Heavenly swords it might be up your alley
Another thing that’s interesting is that Monster Hunter also has a lot of history involving nature fighting back. It’s mentioned in the long past of the monster Hunter world that humans made machines and weapons that put nature at an imbalance, this led to elder dragons fighting in an essential dragon war were fatalis (a black dragon seen as an abomination of nature despite being a natural existing creature) nearly destroyed everything including the main castle. Although there is alot of leg room with how much of this is still canonical to the current series or not as some of this came from frontiers lore (which is questionable on its canonicity) and older concept art. Even so, There is still a heavy usage of nature and it’s balance with the monsters in the series. A lot of times the hunters end up killing a dragon that actually serves an important part of nature and as such pay the consequences when a larger monster is freed to cause havok (Nergigante feeding on other elders and Malzeno prevent gaismagorm from escaping the underground being prime examples) there is also parts in games like Mh stories where they discuss the balance of riders who use monsters and Hunter who kill monsters and why both are important to their world in keeping nature balanced.
It’s so interesting seeing these games involving these dangerous monsters being portrayed as both horrific forms of distruction but also showing them as magnificent creatures that should still be respected. It’s why I’m so fascinated by these games and how they tell stories through the creatures designs and worlds
Hey, you looked at D&D once. Have you considered looking at the Japan worldbook for RIFTS? That is an interesting take on Japan from an outsider’s perspective, as well as what would happen to Japan after the planets aligned and magic nearly destroyed everything
Oni on Netflix is very cute I loved it very much. I think their is alot thats in it that gaijin talks about in all his videos. Also some nice shocking stuff happen plus it's all stop motion yay.
Seeing you used some of the clips from it's trailer earlier and it's been 2 years since it's out and with the anime popping off, would you consider some of the cultural backgrounds of the gangs, and corps of Cyberpunk 2077?
Look Toukiden was FANTASTIC. it just started on the Vita n nobody loved the vita. It was maybe me and 4 of my friends
6:10 So THAT'S what the Aramitama and Nigimitama stuff during FF14 Stormblood's Three Lords Trial series was about! Neat!
That's right!
You have done more to get me hyped for Wild Hearts than Koei Tecmo or EA have. A Toukiden successor is exactly what I want right now. So sad to see the series just left to rot after the second game, they were so good.
Wild Hearts... does it feel like Toukiden?
I'm now deff gunna get this game...
thanks for this!
When will Gaijin Goomba review Jackie Chan Adventures?

Found your channel. I use to watch your videos on game theory. I often wondered what happened, and thinks to gtlive. I found the link to your current channel. So now my account will be adding to your viewers count.
I love the thumb nail the face your making in the thumb nail reminds me of angry video game nerd 😂
"He's gonna take you to Japan's past..."
I'm not the biggest fan of oversimplified names for monsters and such in a lot of Japanese media. Kemono just means "beast," as well as the game Scarlet Nexus having enemies called "The other." I mean, can they be more creative than that, or is it a language thing based on how they write? They probably can't do portmanteaus or use word roots.
Someday I am going to get a call, it will be from Gaijin Goomba, or The Science, or Game Theory, and they want to do a video on one of my games, I've started pre production on one that is near and dear to my heart, I have a long ways to go, especially in the art department but maybe you'll enjoy it as much as I hope you do.
I hope you'll have time for my Halloween suggestion. If not, you could keep it for next year.
I think that if i had to be a swordsman during that time I'd want the tech and weapons from wild hearts lol
since digimon survive spoiler ban has lifted, any chance you will talk about digimon survive ties with japanese folklore? knowing the kemonogami nam replace the digimon term in some route
That goatee is getting smaller or your head is growing like that boss from Legend of the Mystical Ninja lol
I’m the same way sometimes in monster hunter rise and monster hunting in general I have a very na’vi from avatar view on hunting and only hunt strong monsters and apologize for slaying some monsters tending to prefer capture I don’t even like harming them needlessly so I could see myself uttering an “I’m sorry” to most monsters and preferring taming and such to slaying
@10:21 That's Goemon! Hey Goemon!
I might have to pick this one up.
This is my speculation, but the game could be taking place in modern day after a nature apocalypse over a century and a half ago, but with how the karakuri looks, maybe it's further in the future after we find some mystical energy source akin to the level of kami that worked better alongside more traditional material such as wood and iron rather than all these alloys and resins, etc., that we use in our current technology, causing us to go back to older styles of buildings and clothing, and focus on karakuri. However, the amount of energy we used depleted the mystical source, which triggered nature take back the world and manifest the animal kami. Maybe even longer past that point they started to grow unstable and corruption started making them even more violent, and the remaining humans had to fight back instead of running, even having to slay the more gentle kami before they became corrupted, realizing the tragedy that will befall them. But it's more likely your speculation will be correct.
... Wait, so I fight monsters like Biollante!? COUNT ME IN!
Honestly, from pure speculation and what I've seen from the trailer, I think the plot twist is going to be that the majority of humanity is off world and we're in charge of fixing it Wall-E style. Like, the old ways are the only things that work against the monsters and that requires a lot of training and understanding to pull off. Great Video nonetheless.
Gaijin when are you going to talk about the mythological Inspirations of the kemono?? The rasetsu (white Wolf) or the Amaterasu?
ahh Karakuri I know it as Dr. Vegapunks homeland
Give. Us. A. Corvo. Attano. Which NINJA
I like this story so far way more than monster hunter's "kill all the monsters". I was annoyed by the fact EA was attached to this but you've encouraged me to check it out
YEEE! EA as far as I can tell is there to give Koei Tecmo money.
Are you sure we are the bad guys directly and it's not more of a "Sins of the Father" situation where we're trying to do what we can to fix our ancestors mistakes that caused nature to run rampant?
Damn, now I'm even more hyped, really need to see about getting a loan for a decent computer, my old one died. Why does all the amazing stuff have to come out shortly after I break my computer.
I have to wonder if Japanese audiences ever get bored of the Taisho-and-older Japan aesthetic, especially when no one seems to put a new spin on it. It's like medieval Europe, we've seen it for the X-millionth time, don't they have anything new?
It gives me a Lost Planet vibe
you know I was going to ask if you were going to do a video on the Onari's lullaby Movie er short series whatever just saw the dub online today seems like a thing you would really like to do Gaijin especially the twist about what is considered the "Oni" in the story and how it pertains to Japan's past and if you think about it Japan today too
Automatons not robots, there is a difference. if a subtle one.
I honestly wish I could tell you some of the things I learned because of Super Sentai. Lol. And I think you nurtured it.
Imagine if it was in same universe as Horizon Zero Dawn.
I'm surprised there aren't more karakuri tsukumogami in pop media
The Gods be trippin.
Well.... that's another game for my list than.
Nice sales pitch!!
I wish this game hadn’t lost as much attention that it has. It’s such a unique plot arc, the monster designs are cool, and I think it stands alone from Monster Hunter. It’s a case of “don’t compare two queens”.
I'm eager to play Wildhearts! Nioh was the game that made me a fan of Koei Tecmo
Dude, Monster Hunter made me feel like the baddies.
Bdman has a lot of cultural inspiration can you break them out in a video
I love how people forgot about Toukiden😮💨
MatPat in the distance: "Um, the protagonist is the bad guy- actually"
I feel like the whole argument that something is "too cultural" to bring to another country is really stupid nowadays. Both because there are so many immigrants around the world that mixes and inspires cultures, but also because people are kinda hungering for stuff like this especially within video games. I mean how many grey FPS is there while a lot of these "cultural" games are region locked. I kinda feel like that's why games and film industry has gone so bonkers over Norse mythology lately (if you look past the new nazi crowd of course) like how many things have been called "something-something"- Ragnarok, or Valhalla or Valkyrie, or just Viking!
time only will tell
Huh, the robot servants in ninjago are alot more realistic and historically accurate than I realized well... aside from actually having their own personalities.
Monster Hunter was late to the feudalistic japan setting? Mon Hun Portable 3rd would like to have a word with you.
I just watched the second season of Samurai Rabbit and I'm not sure it'll be up your alley. It takes a real left turn into science fiction territory. And considering they use elements of alien invasion, mecha and kaiju in season 2, I'm thinking the writers are more interested in riffing on Japanese pop culture than traditional culture.
3:28 Took her long enough...
Technically in Monster hunter world we’re also the baddies
I thought for sure you were going to compare Wild Hearts to Pom Poko, which was also by Studio Ghibli.
Do you got to do a Yokai history on oni the Thunder God on Netflix it is so fun to see Japanese Yokai being told to Young viewers in America I just hope that if you see it you might like it too even make a video about it
All I want from this game is to throw giant Shuriken or Giant boomerangs at giant creatures.
this reminds me alot of nioh, i cant be the only one
10:16 Ahh Yu-Gi-Oh
It honestly looks so cool.
I'm just praying for the love of God EA dosen't screw this up.
Asking for EA not to screw up is like asking for the mob to give you $20,000. A vain hope at best, and disastrous at worst.
Wait is that a rat with a flail? Have the developers read VGcats? Detergent.
I’m definitely getting this game
All the suicide that is said to be fine is where a lot of the negative spirits and energy is coming from, because take your own life on a whim which is the same as taking another's, so this is self-murder.
