Thanks for doing this. Didn't think anyone knew Fates Warning Jim Matheos is such a underrated guitarist and songwriter I have all there albums Huge influence in my writing. You hit the obscure songs as well.
OMG never would have thought you would pull this magnificent band out to dig into their amazing material !!! Jim Matheos is a monster player, writer, and musician, this is awesome, thanks Dave !!!
I guess im randomly asking but does someone know a trick to get back into an instagram account?? I was stupid lost my account password. I would love any tips you can give me!
@Axl Brayan I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Frank Aresti wrote "A World Apart", and his writing evolution is definitely worth further study ("Giant's Lore" from 1986, "In a Word" from 1988, and "Static Acts" and "The Arena" from 1989, plus his co-writing credits with Jim) Jim shared writing duties up through 1989's Perfect Symmetry, after which, he became the sole music writer, with occasional lyrical duties shared among band members. If you think the music is dark, try sitting through a session of reading their lyrics 🤣 (and this is where Frank & Jim most certainly diverge in paths and styles) Good stuff and excellent video.
@@scottdunn2178 I agree. And, Frank is far more approachable from a fan's standpoint - he always answers emails and loves to hang out after shows (his Dragonspoon album was one of my favorites from the early 2000's). Really miss all of Frank's contributions to the band.
@@mysocalledknife07 I met him on the Parallels tour in 1991 in Phoenix, and he was really cool... I'm a guitarist so I was really picking his brain about his rig. I was blessed to see them on the Perfect Symmetry, Parallels, and Inside Out tours. I'm not digging the brand new album they put out at all, and like I said, Fates just aren't the same without Frank. There's just a hole in their sound without Frank's chimey clean tones and killer solos. Regards 🎸
I was hugely into these guys since the late 80's. Perfect Symmetry, Disconnected and A Pleasant Shade of Grey are probably my favorite albums, at least out of the ones I had. Mark Zonder was insane!
I remember seeing the Anarchy Divine video on Head Bangers Ball when it premiered. Loved Fates ever since. Also got to see them live. They’re even better live. Thanks for the lesson!
I've been listening to Fates warning for decades and just now I'm listening to his solo albums... how could I have missed them??. Thanks very much for this video!
Hey David... thank you for this great video... I really like it... "Der Brocken" in Germany actually is giant hill - not like a mountain but for a hill really huge (it takes approx. 2 hours to walk up) in the northern territory of Germany (it is called "Harz" in English "resin")... the land around the "Brocken" is quite flat for miles and miles and that's why it really stands out... And yes, you're right, it is associated with Witches and Witchcraft... every year there is a thing we call "Walpurgisnacht" (that's when all the witches and sorcerers fly up to the hill and having their time, even making out with one another) from April, 30th to May, 1st... "Der Brocken" with its history became really famous when Johann Wolfgang Goethe mentioned it in his work and travelled there many times... Keep up the good work and greetings from Berlin, Germany
Thanks for doing this. Super interesting! Jim is a genius. It's that simple. And thanks for reminding me what a great song Lighthouse is. I don't give Darkness in a Different Light too much playtime these days, given how strong Theories of Flight was/is. And Arch/Matheos' Winter Ethereal... And Ray Alder's What the Water Wanted....And the new Armored Saint... Can't wait for Long Day Good Night. Hope it's not their last album! Peace.
I was introduced to them from a fellow guitar player who i jammed with that was into them and I was into Queensryche and we swapped LPs because he wasn't familiar with them and I wasn't familiar with Fates Warning. He loaned me Night on Brocken and I lent him Warning and the EP. I've been a huge fan since. John Arch is hugely overlooked singer IMO.
Inspiring lesson. And I agree that Metal is not only about distortion, drop D tuning etc. Those clean spooky chords can be even more metal than just a sound. „Brocken“ btw is highest mountain in Northern Germany and on Walpurgis Night the witches and devils are on their way. We remember that Ronnie Dio sung about the „Lady Evil“ 👻
oh wow. Fates Warning! Dave, you're a man full of surprises! - Oh, and the night of the witches on Mount Brocken is not on Halloween - it's the last night of April or the "Dance into May". :-)
Great choice. There was a period there where Queensryche and Fates Warning were my two favorite 'sounding' bands. I do prefer Fates Warning's rhythm and chord changes to his lead playing, but it's all good.
Bought Night on Brocken while in high school. That was my introduction to this great band. 🍺’ski just when I think you can’t get any cooler you do this! Gonna be a heck of a month.🤘
Great lesson David! So glad you're digging through the catalog! Such a long history. There's so much great music and thankfully they're still cranking it out!
Thanks, brother. You are a class act. Jim has been my favorite composer since 1988, and FW my favorite band. Frank Aresti cannot be discounted in this creative band. He is the perfect compliment to Jim, and is very distinctive as well, although Jim has written the majority of music and lyrics.
Great video as always. Jim is truly a master of riffs and melody. But that bit when you say "It''s not your traditional prog metal group" is quite an understatement. They are THE genre-defining band, along with QR and DT.
Jim is a master of chord layering & textures that I feel no one can touch even today with all these new prog bands that have since followed, still keeps me riveted & intrigued no matter how many times I here any of their songs, still the master of this genre !
My 2 favorite guitarists for 30 years have been Criss Oliva and Jim Matheos, so when I stumbled across your Criss Oliva video, I went looking for one on FW and it didn't disappoint! Buy Long Day Good Night, awesome album.
You picked out the exact reason why I love FW, the beautifully eerie clean passages. Exodus, the intro to In a Word, and the acoustic version of Seven Stars all come to mind
Thanks 🙏 David. I’m a huge fates warning fan. Been listening to them since the 80’s. If there ever was a guitarist who is under rated it’s Jim Matheos. The layers of his music is fantastic.
Wow it must have taken a long time to research this lesson I have cassettes from the old BMG music club of Fates Warning a highly underrated band that has been around for a very very long time i liked the example with the 3 parts on the TC Ditto super cool !!
Solid Lesson on a GREAT band! No Exit was my intro to this band back in the day! My playing style is full of quirks / odd ball stuff I think I picked up from players like Matheo. Requested you do a lesson on FW some months back, now I am BEG of you to do one on Metal Church! Do it for the people Dave!
Great video. Your playing sounds so excellent. This got me re-energized on Fates Warning. They are such a great band. I'm not very fond of the newer stuff, but 80s to mid 90s were epic.
Love it man. FW is one of my favs. Leave the Past Behind is such a great tune (as is that whole album imo). Thanks for this. Looking forward to HellOween if in fact that is coming up soon. Rock on man!
Very cool lesson. Thank you for this. I think Jim Matheos is a brilliant composer. Jim tends to favor 2nd inversion chords on the guitar and lets the bass play the roots. I think it spreads things out more sonically. I'm sure there's plenty more of the FW catalog that you could delve into.
A World Apart. Frank Aresti actually plays that intro... I learned how play it by watching him on both the Perfect Symmetry and Parallels tours. I know Frank was using an original black face Rocktron Intellifex and utilizing the 8-voice chorus during that time. And, you're playing through that intro a little fast. Regards 🎸
What's funny, to me anyway, is that when I was a kid I loved Metallica. They were my favorite band for the longest time, then I started getting into Megadeth and they quickly eclipsed Metallica in the favor of my mind. Then, around 92 / 93, I got into Dream Theater with Images and Words. I loved (and still do) Dream Theater, then Kevin Moore left them and ended up joining Fates Warning for the Pleasant Shade of Gray album. These days, I'll often elect to hear Fates over Dream Theater. I love these guys. This video was really cool to watch, especially the Lighthouse portion. Alternate tunings are so unique and fun and I need to experiment with them more.
Great episode, I'm a huge FW fan: Could you do an episode about working with complex chording in a non-clean environment. There are times you dont want the sudden demarcation in a song that going from dirt to clean (or reverse), but the add 9 chord wont accept any tonal change. What can you do to pare a complex chord into a triad (or similar), but retain some of the tension that non-triads give you.
6:10 The first music store I worked at was Meniketti Music in Oakland (owned by Dave's grandfather), and he had 2 Seagull guitars witch I sold in the first couple of days I worked there. The rest of the guitars were total garbage though and I could never sell any of them. The action was horrible and this as we all know makes them unplayable unless you use a slide. The Seagulls were great though, played and sounded beautiful.
2:37 That's my gripe with the metal guitar world. Too many look down on clean tones. As this video demonstrated, clean tones can be haunting and metal AF. There's not enough tonal variety when players limit themselves to high gain amps.
Thanks for doing this.
Didn't think anyone knew Fates Warning
Jim Matheos is such a underrated guitarist and songwriter
I have all there albums
Huge influence in my writing.
You hit the obscure songs as well.
In my humble opinion Parallels is the Everest of Fates. Everything else is awesome lol
You had me at Fates Warning! 🤘🏻
Loved, loved, loved it. Next do a three for all with Frank Aresti Of Fates Warning.
OMG never would have thought you would pull this magnificent band out to dig into their amazing material !!! Jim Matheos is a monster player, writer, and musician, this is awesome, thanks Dave !!!
@Landen Zakai wow look everybody clickbait trollfest garbage

@Axl Brayan it worked and I actually got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thanks so much, you saved my account :D

Love Fates Warning. Great job man. Cheers from Brazil

Thanks for giving Fates Warning some love. This band deserved more success. They’re amazing!
Great choice. There was a period there where Queensryche and Fates Warning were my two favorite 'sounding' bands. I do prefer Fates Warning's rhythm and chord changes to his lead playing, but it's all good.

Worlds Apart off of Perfect Symmetry
Good stuff ! keep it coming. And if i may suggest, you should do a video about the band Crimson Glory (US) . They sound very similar to Fates Warning.
Mannnnn starting out with my favorite song by them! Great video
Thank you🤘🏻🤘🏻
Remember Crimson Glory had a big influence on Prog Metal.
Great band. Was looking for you to play The Ivory Gate of Dreams...
Lol..21:58 seconds long ... the best Fates tune ever...
Part VI. Whispers On The Wind has a nice clean intro...we need a Part 2 :-)
Spot on Dave thanks for covering such an illusive band!...💪🎸👂💣
Thanks, brother. You are a class act. Jim has been my favorite composer since 1988, and FW my favorite band. Frank Aresti cannot be discounted in this creative band. He is the perfect compliment to Jim, and is very distinctive as well, although Jim has written the majority of music and lyrics.
Big fan of Fates Warning. The stuff that Jim is going with John Arch is amazing also. I was sooooo happy to see Arch back at it again.
Great video as always. Jim is truly a master of riffs and melody. But that bit when you say "It''s not your traditional prog metal group" is quite an understatement. They are THE genre-defining band, along with QR and DT.

They are quite good for sure I dig em.
Metal Month!!!!!!
I'd see ads for Fates Warning in guitar magazines and such back in the day, but never checked them out. Looks like I will be now! Very interesting!
Start with No Exit album and then go backwards or forwards in their catalog as you wish. Just a suggestion.
My 2 favorite guitarists for 30 years have been Criss Oliva and Jim Matheos, so when I stumbled across your Criss Oliva video, I went looking for one on FW and it didn't disappoint! Buy Long Day Good Night, awesome album.
Jim Matheos and Frank Aresti are my favorite guitar duo. Totally underrated.
Thank you David. .you promised me this one when you did a Ryche lesson..thank you
Great lesson and great way of explaining the extended chords!!!🙏🙏🙏
You picked out the exact reason why I love FW, the beautifully eerie clean passages. Exodus, the intro to In a Word, and the acoustic version of Seven Stars all come to mind
Jim Matheos = Musical Genius
Hecks yes. Officially requesting Helloween, or another great Power Metal band.
I think David said that Helloween is definitely on the Metal Month roster!
Thanks 🙏 David. I’m a huge fates warning fan. Been listening to them since the 80’s. If there ever was a guitarist who is under rated it’s Jim Matheos. The layers of his music is fantastic.
I believe the song is "In a Word" Great subject! I am just learning guitar so this is going to be way beyond me, but I will save it for later
Crap, wrong song lol
“In a Word” is a tremendous song!
Such a unique teardown video about Fates Warning, i'd watch it for hours! Respect!
\mmmm/ love it! Thanks for the videos!
Great lesson again! Thanks Dave!
Wow it must have taken a long time to research this lesson I have cassettes from the old BMG music club of Fates Warning a highly underrated band that has been around for a very very long time i liked the example with the 3 parts on the TC Ditto super cool !!

Very cool ' I cherish this stuff!

I always enjoy your raps in front of the lessons. You always have something insightful and positive to say. Thanks!
Jim is a genius in all the way,his acoustic lines very introspective as complex.
Dave, is there anything u can't play, so rad! :)
I'm gonna ask for it again, Chords of Killing Joke would be great.
10:46 someone help me out. What Black Sabbath song does that one tiny section sound like? Wait! I think I got it. Is it TOO LATE? From Dehumanizer?
Fates have new album coming up next month
I dig the Fates Warning version of Jim Matheos... but I REALLY dig the OSI version. Him and Kevin Moore make some damn noise together.
Kevin is cool on the Fates Warning stuff that I have. I'll have to check out OSI... I kinda got out of the prog stuff.
Your guitar powers continue to expand as the mullet grows longer. :)
Coincidence? I think not.
I just watched this lesson again with my guitar and this was helpful. Monument & Leave the Past Behind makes much more sense playing wise.
Brilliant, thank you, thank you!
Another cool clean lesson would be Opeth’s Damnation album and similar songs from their catalog! FW forever!!!
Love Fates Warning!!! My favourite band.
I love Fates and this was awesome to watch. Thank you.
Great video. Your playing sounds so excellent. This got me re-energized on Fates Warning. They are such a great band. I'm not very fond of the newer stuff, but 80s to mid 90s were epic.
At one point in my I think this was the only band I listened to....I have no idea why they did not get bigger....
Love it man. FW is one of my favs. Leave the Past Behind is such a great tune (as is that whole album imo). Thanks for this. Looking forward to HellOween if in fact that is coming up soon. Rock on man!

I talk off and on with Mike Abdow who is in Fates Warning now. Phenomenal guitarist. Check out his solo work on the Tube.
Fates warning one of my all-time favorite bands

Merci
Great video dude!

Fuck ja, dude. Fates Warning has always perplexed me on guitar. Thanks.
speaking of prog metal, what about a Ron Jarzombek lesson?
How about Mercyful Fate or King Diamond riffs for Halloween?
Yes please.
Learned something from this
Wow
Can’t name that tune! But great video!!!!👍👍👍👍
I use chords like these in my music alot. I feel like it suits perfectly under a heavy distorted riff etc.Definitely where my heart is too :)
For example ; ua-cam.com/video/0XMxLsZxHAk/v-deo.html

Requesting Pink Floyd part 3... Let's do Meddle....
So Fates Warning guitarist uses SUS 2 or SUS 4 chords? what else does he do often that his trademark things he does?
Frank plays the tap like intro on Monument.
+1 for covering this band at all. OH man, how about doing *PSYCHOTIC WALTZ*, hahah, that should be interesting.
Thanks 👍....story tellers night,Magnum?very 🇬🇧band but they prog🤘
Jim and frank were dynamic together.

Fates Warning?!?!?! Get the Fk outta here🤘🤘 thanks Dave🙏🙏
A World Apart written Frank Aresti
