    The bottom line is, if you are not going to be using the bike for more than a month, disconnect the battery B+. The electronics continually draw power even with the ignition switch off to keep the clock running and the memory for several of the functions that you customize. I.e. User mode, what the transmission has learned from your riding style, etc. Of course, if the battery is disconnected for a while, you will have to reset all of the functions that you have customized but it is better than having a dead battery. I have left a bike battery disconnected for over six months without it losing enough juice to start the bike without it being on a "trickle charger". If you leave the battery connected and have it connected to a trickle charger, you shouldn't have any problems however, if you have a cheap trickle charger, it may over charge the battery and destroy the battery. Again, I suggest just disconnect the battery and before you reconnect it after a period of time, check the voltage and if it is below 12.6vdc, charge it. Or, connect it to your car battery and let it sit for an hour or so and your car battery will charge the bike battery.

      Well, yes, that is one of the solutions. In these areas we used to have habit to take battery out of the bike and take it home to keep her "warm" during winter.....

      H James! thank you for your input! Yes, i used to do that in the past, but i ride year round so a trickle charger is the better option for me, as i like to jump on and go, this winter was different.... i couldn't ride unfortunately..... and i don't have a power supply to keep the bike on a constant trickle charger....

      @@MiroVaclav I lived in Wisconsin for years. Cold storage for a bike battery is not bad, just warm it up before you want to use it. Actually, cold storage is probably better (not freezing) since it will slow down any deteriorization of the battery.

    No vehicle will start when the battery is at 11.4 volts. 12.6+ is charged. 12.06 is 50% and 11.75 is 30%. Anything less you would have a hard time starting it. Noco makes fantastic products, I personally use the Genuis 1 for my battery tender, I own two of them, kept the batteries charged in both my bikes all Winter long. I wasn't aware Noco had those battery tender leads that have the thicker gauge wiring for using the X Connect as a jump starter as well. What a very thoughtful design. Going to invest in that, thank you for the demonstration!

      Couldn't agree more, funny story is that the day after I filmed this video, my son's battery left him stranded, Noco took care of business so fast, excellent real life lesson! 👍

    Gus, if the pig tail is in parallel with the battery, you have to leave the jump starter on it for about 15 minutes or so to put a charge into the bike battery. Then the battery will start the bike. There should be no need to carry a jump starter/battery charger with you once the bike is running if the charging system of the bike is working properly and the battery will take a charge. If the battery won't take a charge, get a new battery. If the charging system of the bike is faulty, you will have this issue until it is fixed. Of course, if you have a higher power booster, the bike will start right away but then the bike charging system will still have to charge up the battery for the next time you want to start it.
    As a test, the next time your battery is low on juice, start the bike like you just did with your jumper device and turn it off immediately and check the battery voltage. It will still be low because you didn't give it time to charge up.

      One of these jump starters is just a band aid to get it running, not a solution to the problem.

      Gus, I don't mean to seem harsh, but I have been a mechanic over 50 years and have had bikes the whole time and have always done my own work. Bike batteries can be perplexing. Once I had a 1973 CL350 and one time it was running poorly at high RPMs. I thought it might be the timing, not, maybe the spark plugs, not, maybe the carburation, not. It was a weak battery. The battery would start the bike but it seems that at high RPMs, the coils needed more juice. I swapped out the battery and all was good. I can't imagine how these electronically complicated bikes will behave with a weak battery now. Newer bikes have better charging systems to where they can keep eveything running even with a weak battery. However, if your battery is too weak after sitting three months, it is time for a new battery. IMO. Things will just go down hill util you replace it. I put an AGM in my Valkyrie and it stays charged for many many months. I even take it out at times to use as a brake battery backu for my car trailer. This battery also has a built in voltage meter.

      Yes, you make a good point, however you and i know that mistakes happen while on the road and equipment fails sometimes, i often travel in remote areas and i have a DCT which i can't jump start in an emergency, hence the need to carry a jump starter with me, plus i will be equipped to help others if need be.

    • @ontherebel11
      @ontherebel11  3 місяці тому

      Yes, precisely! the solution is to keep the battery healthy at all times.

    • @ontherebel11
      @ontherebel11  3 місяці тому

      Not harsh at all brother, these discussions will help others!! Yes, you are absolutely right, once a battery is dead we should consider replacing it, my battery was replaced right before my 3,000 mile trip to Texas last Feb, i will keep a close eye on it and won't hesitate to replace it if i feel like it is damaged. great feedback James, thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge with the community.

    Hi Gus, I was thinking for this problem even before something like this has happedned.When I have bought Rebel I have bought also CTEK 0,8 charger. This charger has on output cable connector where you can plug or "clamps" or "battery cables with "mounting eye". I have used this mounting eyes to join them to batery connectors permanently and I have hidden this cable under the seat and plastic covers. And I was riding whole season without using them. But during this winter I took out connector of this cable to be simply reachable and I have just connected it to the charger after Christmass. I was not waiting until the moment i could not start. One of the advantage is that you just connect this charger and you do nothing else - no setup, no adjusting of charger......That the simpliest possbible solution, which can help you to prevent "battery death" becouse you did not use bike for whole winter.....
    Thanks for a good idea :) I am looking for another your videos :)
    Look at this charger......

      Miro, my friend!!! CTEK makes great products, you have a good system, the best way is to do what you do and keep the bike on a charger, unfortunately for me i don't have a power supply where i store my bike, only a small battery that i use... but since i have the DCT, if i ever have a dead battery while i am touring, i can't push start the bike, hence the need for a jump starter to be with me, sometimes i ride in remote areas without cell phone service so i want to be prepared. Always great to hear from you brother!

    Ok... Dumb question time..
    If you had a pigtail.already installed, why didn't you just hook a tender to it over the winter instead of waiting until after winter to charge it?
    That's really the whole point of installing a pig tail....

    • @ontherebel11
